when he get firepole
"The debt we owe our parents we pay to our children" .... that's deep.
this sentence works only if u considered it a debt
I just stopped the video to write it down. Children are owed a loving supportive home, not much else in life, but that should be guranteed.
@@letsplaywithlife3063which is why I think it clashes with how Van described his father as treating his kids like a hobby. Maybe Van sees himself as being debted to his father, but if his description of his father is accurate, his father did not intend his children to be an investment that would pay back
@@pradoll Many Dad's have trouble balancing work(putting food on the table) and spending quality time with their kids. A lot depends on the family dynamics: siblings, Mother involvement, etc.
@@canadude6401 yeah, I can completely understand the struggle that comes with even a single planned child. I wasn't saying Van's father did a bad job, or that Van shouldn't be grateful for what he got from his parents. I think kids should not be debted to their parents as it is a contract that only the parents can sign, so a hobby is a better description than an investment in my eyes
When X sees the race track he gasps, then the first words out of his mouth are "Thanks Dad" - it tells you all you need to know about how the boy is being raised. Kudos to both you and Isabelle on the way you're brining up your boy. The quote about our debt being paid onto our children is profound to me. It is what every parent would want... Excellence Van. Thank you.
Its the first thing I noticed too.
It's complex, when my son was five we build his ikea bed together, he thanked me by remembering it 10 years later.
this part made me tear up.
"the debt we owe our parents, we pay unto our children."
you continue to amaze me, Van.
Its really not that good of a quote
"The debt we owe our parents we pay to our children." Damn... that made me cry like a little boy.
Me too. I didn't see it coming. Damn
Somehow Van makes videos that help learn life lesson while also teaching me how to be a better creator. This guy is a genius and I love it
"Thanks Dad" ... that's gotta make it all worthwhile. I can't wait to hear the same thing.
This is the most underrated channel I’ve ever seen on RUclips.
Hands-down one of the best. The story telling, the narration everything on point 🔥
Vans fathership is so admirable, it encourages me to be a better dad every day
Dear Van,
As a child I always wanted a way to switch off my room light from my bed. I thought of ropes and pulleys, lego motors and broomsticks. Never tried any, because it all seemed to complicated. Now that I have seen your hotwheelcar race track along the wall, I may try that solution. Running the toy car into the lightswitch, that is. I’m 39, thanks for the inspiration!
I always look forward to seeing your videos. I am a 58 year old woman who has a bit of a spirited man within her. I envy your workspace, your work ethic, love of life and your ability to tell a great story. You gave me some food for thought in regards to " the debt we owe our parents we pay to our children" comment. I feel as though our adult wounds are because of our parents- good or bad- and that in return we wound our children. For example, if our parents were ones who didn't express emotions, we tend to do the opposite with our children- overly emotional. Hence, we are working out of our wounds-trying to repair our childhood. However, we are just wounding our children. Hence, the rinse and repeat cycle. But maybe I should look it like you said. ps... I am a mother of two and a therapist.
6:35 and onwards made me cry. So many memories. Thank you for sharing Van, I appreciate you so much.
I'm going to be a first time father in less than 4 weeks, this was a really touching video. I'm nervous.. but I also have a warmth of joy when I think of the adventure that is about to begin.
You're such a tentative, caring, nurturing but also just as importantly FUN father, showing your son the cool things not only that you can build, but that he can build.
Equipping him with the tools to not only survive and thrive in the world, but crucially, how to make and refine his own tools as he makes his own way.
I love the content man, wishing you all the best.
And all my best to you and the family from the UK
Soul. Pure soul is what you have Van. Thank you for making day a little better
This channel might be the best "Dad" content on the internet. Truly aspirational, (my daughter, six months) without it feeling like you're using your kid as a prop, or without it feeling like he's being pushed to do something he doesn't want to do. The dial is turned to the exact right spot, where he is in the video as much as is necessary to tell the story, and not a frame longer. Would love to see something from you describing best practices for kids in videos, because you seamlessly appear to get it right. My kid, is back of head only on my channel, but I've got a much smaller audience, which shifts the risk-reward ratio.
I will never forget the dinners my dad missed so I could eat instead. Thank you, dad. I love you
Right after Van told the story about Barry Niceguy and Van Meanstat, X saying "Nice, dad!" is the greatest thing ever. What a way to storytell.
this was beautiful Van! and the last words were inspiring "the debt we owe our parents, we pay on to our children."
You are an inspiration, my friend. Your approach to filmmaking has got me to start writing again and has sparked my inner child. Wish I'm as great a dad as you are when I have kids.
What a lucky kid to have a Dad that is willing to bring all of his awesomeness to bear on his childhood. My Dad is 82, I am 55, and my son is 8 months old. Not too long ago, I realized that my Dad STILL does "Good Dad Shit" for me at every turn. His consistency made it easy for me to do the same for my daughter (30yo), and it just follows that I'm doing it for my son. This was a perfectly-timed example of what "GDS" means in your family. It doesn't look that different from what my house has looked like raising 2 kids of very different ages at 2 very different times in history nor what my house looked like growing up. Thank you for the reminder.
For my oldest (he’s now 19) I was unable to spend as much time with as I wanted when he was that age. At the time, I was working 3rd shift and it sucked.
We have a great relationship and he’s a great kid. Like anything else, you have to keep at it over time.
5:29 You can do a second pair of those hinges below the initial one for the times the kid sits there by himself
the last sequence was incredible, jeez
Van’s BetterHelp integrations are great!
I use to play with matchbox cars and also with my son, I love making jumps and watching his reaction.
I have a son in the way, the first and only so far, and possibly ever. . Van, you are possibly my favorite and best model of parenthood, you are doing in it, just as I wish to. Thank you for showing me a wonderfull path to fatherhood.
I was starting to miss this kind of playful, warm, soothing feeling only some of your carefully crafted but still simple and spontaneous videos can give. I sincerely thank you for making me feel this once in a while.
lovely video!
I've been waiting all week! Your videos bring me peace.
Phew ! The Van's videos we love and adore are finally back ! Thank you for this video Van ! Its beautiful ! :)
Great video!
Thank you Van. This has really made me think. My son who is now 25 has decided he does not want me in his life and it hurts. I have turned to more creativity to heal. I have a long way to go. But I am sure one day he will come back. I hope, before it is too late.
My dad died couple months ago. This shook things up, in a good way. Made me realize the chance I had. Thank you Van
His reaction made the tears come, thank you so much for sharing.. His reaction made the tears come, thank you so much for sharing..
I've spent much of my life struggling to find appreciation for the way my parents raised me. In my current frame of mind, I see how imperfect my upbringing was, even downright horrible in some aspects, but I now see that my parents did the best they could with what they knew. I also recognize that my ability to think this way is a blessing, becuase I know so many suffer far worse childhoods by some downright evil parents.
I used to think my parents had evil intent, but it turned out that I couldn't know how hard being a parent was until I had a child of my own. The debt I owe is the best my parents gave to me, despite the disfunction. And as I look at my son, who is currently 3, I know that I must also do the same.
I must still learn from the mistakes of my childhood, but regardless, I must do my best.
I'm sure some day my son will have his gripes towards my best, and to that, I say, let the tradition to do your best continue today.
Beautiful! And the drawings on the chalkboard have a beautiful meaning: you spend time together
Thanks for inspiring me to take action and prepare for a afternoon of creating together with my five year old son! Wanted to send you a nice picture of the scene but cant find a way to share the picture with you…
PS. a new box is added to my collection of storage, on the side is says: glue gun + wood burner + engraver. This will be the box of the year 🙂
Great video, Van!
Fantastic work, Van
this is really deep. Thank you
Your dexterity has always inspired me ❤
His reaction made the tears come, thank you so much for sharing.
Scared that wooden ladder might shift because it's not permanently affixed to the wall or bed. Sure hope your little buddy never falls trying to get in to/out of bed. 6:44- Ladders oriented in that direction compared to the entrance area of the bed, are extremely unstable and so easy to fall from when you try to push off it to get into the bed. Awesome race track!!!
beautiful as always
these videos are so beautiful and wholesome, one of the few videos i watch with my heart
so wholesome and inspiring. good work. so many good things to say but Ill just say, thank you for making your movies, Van
That bedroom is rad, and that ladder IS a work of art! You are a good dad Van. 💜
Much love to you, Van!
As always Van, a beautiful story so, so, so very well told. Your creativeness is, honestly, next level. the beautiful boy too. "The debt we owe our parents we pay to our children" is the stand-out line from this movie - standing shoulder to shoulder to your commitment to your family/son. Hugs.
I absolutely love this. As a father without a present father it is a journey of discovering more what not to do than what to do - and yet a journey focused on loving my children deeply, presently and honestly and praying the rest works itself out. Thanks for being an inspiration, van!
This was beautiful to watch my friend. You are such a loving father
this was a very nice one! liked it a lot! thanx! 👍
This was really beautiful. Thanks Van.
This video hit home for me. I remember my dad building a loft bed for me and making racing tracks that took over my room. You’re a great dad.
That was beautiful Van. Good Job. Cheers from Australia.
@Van Neistat - you should design that hot wheels track so the car returns close enough to the start point that the boy can reach the car bucket restart the car.
Thanks @VanNeistat! My son is about to turn 5. This video brought up a lot of emotion for me. Always inspired by your work!
I have a similar loft into a bed in my tiny studio. It is an overflow for when we have too many guests or someone just needs to sleep alone. I lucked into a Putnam rolling ladder that had a split at the top for free. It is one of those little treasures that I never get tired of seeing and using.
Wow! Thank you
Incredible video Van! As a recently new father, this strikes a lot of cords and hope to be as good of a father as you are!
So beautiful Van, youre boy is gonna be so proud to have a father like you. Never stop making videos. I wish you great fortunes
Beautiful, Van. Beautiful.
That desk design is beautiful
For a while, I've been following your videos, and reflecting on the past months I think that these are helping me to grow into a man I will like to be. A man that I hope the me of today will be proud of, a man that is comfortable with himself and others, a man that could be a healthy example of masculinity for anyone who'll listen, a man that is a Spirited Man.
your endings, every time, make me re-think how i approach my own. In journalism, they often talk about not needing a summary line - just write your last thought. But to me, that always felt unsustained; like not tying one your shoes. But your provide a final sentence that isn't summarizing - its just there. And it just works. I always find myself telling you thank you - but, thank you again. Inspiration this time
Good job 👍
the debt to our parents should never be a greed, it should be an outpouring of love that our/other children deserve.
Wow, beautiful!
Thank you for this
wow. that last minute made me tear up
I'm gonna binge this channel so hard you don't even know dude. Such inspiration!
Awesome job van
Van, as a new father to a future spirited woman and fellow storyteller I'm very heartened by what you continue to share. Thank you, Spirited Man! You remind me earning a living with our talent(s) is something to be grateful for and continue to make the torch burn as bright as long as we have hold of it.
Your videos are soul cleansing
thanks!
Thank you Van
Van, you sir are an exceptional father and human being. I took more from this video than I have in my last month of life. I wish I was exaggerating. Thank you!
What a great video. My parents are such good parents, I wish to make them happy as much as possible
Another inspirational video. I get such joy watching every one of them. Thanks Van.
(Might do the hot wheels track in my own room). Jim, 39, 🇬🇧
Thank you for making this
A lovely story
god, tears me up everytime i see van's videos
I have a son on the way (November) im 42 my wife is 38,we have an 11yr old girl (shes absolutely amazing) and im so terrifyingly excited. But seeing you being such an active and wonderful father with a 5 yr old makes me feel good that its not crazy to have a toddler at almost 50. Great content and parenting.
pure art right here
awesome parenting, my only suggestion is to add some kind of grab rail just in case anyone falls out of that top bunk bed!
Amazing
" Don't mind those dangours cables. he knows not to lick them".
Brilliant. Made me smile.
And that racetrack....I'm so doing that.
yeah, I shoulda had myself one of those. Good work Van
I sometimes feel bad watching your videos as you are sooooo damn talented Van. You are a creative genius.
The shot of you hanging the ladder on the French cleat and stepping back reminded me of Joseph Kosuth’s one and three chairs.
I’m jealous on that race car track.
I love this rumination Van, I feel like we do pay that debt back to our children, if everything is done as it should be, the debt owed is increased with each generation. Also I think it's just lovely that your son will be able to look back on these essays when you're gone, what a gift to be able to go back through his father's thoughts and for his father's love to be everlasting.
Van, you are an awesome Dad and can celebrate Father's Day with pride with your son.
"A strong, loving father-son relationship allows a son to know the importance of proper treatment of others, respect, honesty, humility, and responsibility. Be a Teacher. Involved fathers use everyday examples to help their children learn basic lessons of life"
Good video
What a smile 😃 just appeared on my face when I saw that hot wheels track. Great video
As an engineer, I am ecstatic that I found you!! great stuff
That quote was beautiful but also left me uneasy. The thought that I wont get to repay that debt to my parents but, that is the way that life is, they invested that time and now we do the same 7:03
so good
4:49 @slowwoodshop ‘s lovely looking toolbox!
