100% agree it's on the restaurants to pay their wait staff a fair wage, but I still feel like as long as my waiter is doing a good job and I'm happy with their service, they deserve a tip. But yeah, companies definitely need to stop expecting their workers to somehow live off tips. The tips are supposed to be a little bonus, not something to survive off.

Yep!! One time I went with my family to eat & had to pay for it. I didn’t like the service so I gave them little tip but they got upset. They were saying I needed to give 10% tip. I had to because I was being forced. Idk why my mom likes to go back there still when the food is alright. I like to tip when the service is great. Another time when I was at a bar & the bartender was being rude & impatient. I gave her a tip before I knew how awful her attitude was.

Not that you need my validation but you said it perfectly. It seems there's this ongoing unspoken obligation that customers are responsible for making up the wage difference. When this doesn't happen this can be met with crazy outcomes. Such as one I experienced about a year ago. A driver shows up with my food order & demands a tip. I asked the driver to leave my residence & contacted the restaurant about his demand. I stopped ordering from the restaurant because of how aggressive the driver became.
The crazier thing is the ones expecting/demanding a tip are willing to commit a criminal act (i.e. spitting/putting random things in food, eating part of the order, etc.) due to not receiving an optional tip. I would just take away tipping all together & pay the workers a normal wage.

tipping should 100% be optional in my opinion, the employers should pay the employees a livable wage like other companies, why is the restaurant industry only like this? we shouldnt be the sole cause of whether someone can pay their rent, especially since its subjective to the customer experience...

Tipping is starting to become a thing in the uk
when me and my freind went to a restaurant and the lady waiter who was super un inviting
while sitting us down on our table while waiting for our food we asked her for tap water and she said they domt have any (by the way it is required of every dine in service to provide tap water if asked ) and told us that we had to pay for the tap water we said no , we saw another waiter and asked him for it and he immediately went and got it for us and he wasnt even our waiter ,
She was straight up rude the whole time bringing in our food and when it was time to pay me and my freind were charged £8 each that was apparently mandatory service fee and she tried to charge us for the water when i said the guy said the water is free she gave him the worst look
Once we paid she gave is the biggest smile and said come again soon ,
Tell my other freind what happened and turns out there is no service fee SHE FINNESSED US and forced a tip when she gave the worst service im sad it didnt go towards the dude tha was goving good and honest service

That is facts !!... Idk about doing things to ya food. But when deliveries pop up we see the miles and amount... Very easy to deduce if there's a tip or not. Which means the drivers can reject those deliveries & it takes longer to find a driver willing to do your delivery. Chances are they'll bundle your order with another delivery which has a tip which is why eventually it gets picked up. Or there's an event on the app and drivers will take crappy deliveries to get the bonus cash from the event.

Even when I worked a minimum wage job, it was weird getting tipped from people. It almost kinda looked like I was being looked down on in a way. I have a coworker that feels like we should get tipped when we help someone outside (at a grocery store) so she doesn’t help anyone outside at all because half the time she feels like they won’t tip. I just always found it so weird. You should be helping someone out the kindness of your heart, not helping them because you’re expecting a tip from them. Idk. Maybe that’s just me. I’ll accept the tip, but I will always tell them “Oh no it’s okay, but if you insist”

Here’s the thing. If I know that a business is paying trash to their employees, then I’m just going to get the food to go or just don’t frequent the establishment. But going somewhere you KNOW is paying trash and not tipping, you’re contributing to the problem for your own personal pleasure, especially if the service was good. It’s no different than people complaining about retail workers not being able to spend holiday time with family or being paid minimum wage, but be the first in line in the stores on the holidays.

If I’m out driving one day and decide to hit up a restaurant I’ve never been to then I can’t just ask them niggas their wage. USA worker need to understand this. You need to protest, for better pay. The worker has all the power. They need you to make money. If 50% of the company is not working. They lose money and complaining from other company. For not producing the product in time. They will have, no choice to raise the wage. They wont have time to hire new worker. The best solution, is to bankrupt the company. To force other business to notice. If you dont pay the worker good wage. This will happen to you.

I Uber every now and then. Uber eats for me only pays out roughly $3-5 in my area. Rides can range from $4-8 at minimums in my area. It sucks, but I don’t get super worked up. Why? Im using it as a means to make a quick buck. I have a full time job that pays decent, but may not cover every expense. Uber comes in where I may need the extra dollars. If folks don’t tip, I’m not going to trip. I’ll just continue on, or if the pay doesn’t match my comfort level of travel, then I’ll reject the order and hopefully someone else will happily pick it up. Sometimes the more an order cancels by the driver, the chances the service will up the payout to the next person who feels comfortable to accept.

The only problem I see with Dee’s point is that people may not want this job but bills have to get paid. If workers start boycotting these businesses then the workers go without pay and can possibly get fired, than the customers get mad at the business until the company replaces the workers with people that are willing to work for them without paying them more. Does it make sense to try and boycott these companies for better wages. Yes. But is it actually possible. No. Unfortunately things in America don’t allow for people who are in lower-middle to low class skip any days or miss a paycheck. The other problem is there is no guarantee that it will work or even how long it will take. If your standard waiter gets paid $3.25 an hour from their employer and is expected to make the rest of their wage in tips. If we’re knowledgeable about that than it may not be our responsibility to tip them but we should feel a little more obligated. The way I view the cost of food versus tips is the actual food cost is used to pay for restocking and to pay the cooks and kitchen staff. The tips are used to pay the waiters

People who work at stores are also in customer service providing a service but they are not doing their best to please you and get paid a wage that isn’t 3 dollars a hour and you don’t care about them. But restaurants are different??? When you see your waiter like 2 or 3 times in your whole time being at the restaurant. A brief interaction with a cashier at a store and a brief interaction with a waitress but the waitress gotta be the one getting paid 2 dollars an hour and gotta have a smile on they face in order to get paid anything?? Logic is not making sense. I’m a server at red lobster this is gonna be intriguing….i always feel like ppl say the establishment should pay us yes I wish but it’s literally a SERVING job. It was created to SERVE y’all so that way our SERVICE is warranted a tip. It’s simple…if you can’t afford to tip DONT go or just take it tf home 🤷🏾‍♀️

Id rather tip the cook than somebody whose job is place the food that was prepared by the chef on table.
Yall need to be paid a living wage. End of story

I don't fully get your logic. The job is to serve people, but that doesn't inherently mean you deserve a tip just for doing it. If you do the amount of work required of the job then you should be paid a fixed amount like every other job. You shouldn't get a varying amount of pay.

Also, working in sales at Nike is a service job, working at the register at DICK’S Sporting Goods is a service job, etc because it’s customer service like waiters/waitresses aren’t special in any way except for the fact that you all like to get scammed. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Im sooooo tired of hearing about this, if you want to tip then tip, if you dont then cool. Nobody is forcing anyone to tip, there might be a little pressure, but stop being a bih and dont tip if you dont. I personally love tipping people who im impressed with.
