    1,000 Starships could transport a maximum of 100,000 tons to Mars (100 tons per Starship). So, it would take one million Starships to bring 100 million tons to Mars, right? (That’s multiplied by 10 because each Starship needs to be refueled by ten others.) Am I missing something?

    • @nicholassmith7730
      @nicholassmith7730 3 дня назад +1

      And combine that with the simple fact starship has so far has only delivered a single banana to the Indian ocean, not space. SpaceX best chance at getting slightly closer to Mars is to stack those million starships end to end and climb up them.
      Anyway, best run. I can hear the Musk worshippers sharpening their pitch forks.

    • @yomanyo327
      @yomanyo327 3 дня назад

      That's about the gist of it, though later versions of starship will be able to move 150+ tons and due to being able to move more stuff, you'll need fewer refill flights.
      That's why it's so important to get the reuse and design optimizations ASAP. Their goal is to get to the point of making a new ship every 3 days per factory.
      Think about it like this, if you want to move 1m tons of stuff in about 25 transfers, you need 400 ships moving 100 tons, if the ships move 200 tons, you need only 200 ships, or 1000 ships in just 5 transfers.

    Here is where people, including Elon are wrong: People go where there dream is for vacations, people will move somewhere to make money / living.
    Think about Antarctic. We have the technology to colonize the south pole and, at least, we don't have to worry about air and water.
    But people don't move to Antarctic, no mining, no industry. Well, the international accords prohibits them, but the end result is the same: no money, no people.
    How people will sustain themselves? If Elon will actually give money to people, like in UAE, it will be possible.
    People will move to the Moon because they can mine there, get rich, build a new life, just like after Columbus and Cabral.
    At first it will be a trickle, no economy, no money. But after a period of ramp up, thousands will go there. But not Mars, no. It will remain a scientific outpost.

The most powerful groups would be technoGuilds, welders guild, chem guilds, power guilds, food guilds. See what I mean, new ways to be the same.
      But that won't come to pass, that will happen elsewhere. Places where people can earn money and make a life, think Neo-neo-colonialism. People didn't go to Greenland, Antarctic or North Canada, those remain rather empty, they have gone to Africa, Americas, Australia. They will go to the moons and after that, asteroids.

    i don't know how viable it would be, but at first, couldnt people just control the optimus bots manually, kinda like they did at the last event? Would enable them to get more complex stuff done. I imagine lag would be an issue and that it would only be possible during the window?

    • @alanrvaughan
      @alanrvaughan 4 дня назад

      There would still be a significant time lag during the window when the planets are at their closest. The rovers on Mars today as an example need to be preprogrammed for every task they do. So optimus would need to be able to fully think for itself to get any significant work done.

    • @ttt34733
      @ttt34733 4 дня назад

      @@alanrvaughanWell what about just landing multiple starships with optimus bots and have the humans stay in orbit to manually control them,they could farm fuel,food,resources and send it up to the main ship in orbit until they've built something sustainable

    • @alanrvaughan
      @alanrvaughan 4 дня назад

      @ Yes that could technically work. There are a couple issues though with keeping humans in orbit for extended periods of time. Exposure to radiation and zero gravity leading to reduced bone density and muscle mass. For supplies from the surface, there would need to be a fuelling station ready to go soon after arrival to ensure the rockets have fuel to service the humans in orbit. Also it takes 6-8 months to travel to Mars during the window so unless there is a big enough space station in orbit for humans then that confinement would be a very heavy toll on the crew. Last thing is going to Mars is very risky but candidates would most likely want reassurance that there are life support systems in place to ensure their survival and potential return if they choose. There are many complications with sending humans so there is not an easy answer.

    • @ttt34733
      @ttt34733 4 дня назад

      @@alanrvaughan really appreciate your response on this,I kinda wondered if star-link satellites along with XAI grok would be a factor in this, Maybe stationing a starship powered by solar in orbit that has a supercomputer on board providing the Optimus bots with real time solutions by running simulations and also add a few satellites for quick communication,the AI will assist while giving us some time to respond through the lag

    • @alanrvaughan
      @alanrvaughan 4 дня назад

      @ No problem at all. Yes that is more likely the way it would be done. The army of Optimus robots would likely be controlled be the central computer like a hive mind similar to bees. The only thing i would add is that you would want to get that supercomputer underground on Mars as fast as possible for protection since it would be one of the most important assets. You would not need many starlink satellites at the beginning since you only need to cover a small region on the surface and with enough storage you could create a backup of our data centres from Earth on Mars so the data can be accessed locally without any lag. From earth humans would oversee progress and give further instructions. XAI grok “hive brain” in this case would be responsible for executing those plans through the robots.

      You don't actually have to terraform a planet with no magnetic field. You just have to promise to do it until all the people that believe you stop giving you money.

  • @TerryWhite-b2h

    I would be careful in underestimating a first principles physics thinker. If you're able to start bringing fuel to a Starship, that's already in orbit. As the Starship, that's in orbit reaches the right amount of fuel to refuel the one that is going to Mars. Then, that Starship can collect the fuel from the one that's already in orbit and give it a full tank of fuel to go to Mars.
    If you also have a Starship that can go to the moon and start making fuel on the moon, a Starship can go to a lunar orbit, refuel and go to Mars.

    I am sure Musk could at least enable a human foothold of a Mars research base within 15 years, as with the Moon landing this could inspire the next generation onto greater attachments.
    But 1 million people I agree needs a lot more advancements in rockets, energy systems, water and food production needs, radiation habitat protection etc etc will take far longer and many people will not go to Mars without these developments first.

    I know you can't find many sensible pictures of a potential Mars base/colony, but there won't be glass domes or geodesic domes on Mars..... :)
    Dust storms aren't the issue, heat expansion/contraction, leakage, meteorites and debris are big issues for surface structures.
    Terraforming an atmosphere on Mars would need proportionally more gases than our atmosphere on earth.
    With the weaker Mars gravity, you'd need a massive atmosphere to create 1 atm of pressure down at the surface so a human could skip wearing a suit.
    The new Mars atmosphere would be very tall and would require rethinking Mars satellites and atmospheric entry methods.
    It would also very slowly dissipate from solar winds because Mars doesn't have our magnetosphere.

    11:11 I hear much spoken of in terms of terraforming. But won't the newly created atmosphere just escape into space without a magnetosphere? Wouldn't that be the first task to tackle, if there's a way to do so at all?

    • @syntrixx
      @syntrixx День назад

      Very good question. I don't see any way of creating an artificial magnetic field around the planet, and as you correctly commented, without a magnetosphere, the atmosphere would simply erode, as it probably has done in the past.
