  • Is flow control a necessary upgrade for you?
I am trying to figure that out myself. Watch the video to find out what I think about that.

How do you adjust pump pressure on the Rubino? Mine is always 10.5 11 bar

FC is good for getting different flavor profiles with beans, especially really fresh ones practically right off roast (something something off gassing dark side). In my experience, FC really can get some amazing profiles that aren’t achievable with stock machines. It’s pretty fun actually. Until I tried it though I thought it was nonsense, but it’s a real thing.

I think the most important 3 factors that affect taste of coffee are dose (extraction ratio), grind setting and temperature. Of course there are other factors that can affect the coffee extraction but I believe it it these main ones. Flow control is a tool that can control preinfusion and extraction by varying the water flow rate. It's a bonus.

Interesting video. So it looks like your 1st shot was brewed at around 10.5 bar (at the group head) and the 2nd at around 9 bar. Have you set your pump opv at 10.5 bar or is it at 9 bar that the machines are typically set at. I own a quick mill machine and have been debating whether adding this feature would be worthwhile. Looking forward to your future videos on this feature.

I think it's worthwhile. As I don't really pay too much attention to pressure. I am more concern with Flow.

One other factor, on my quick mill veterano 2b, there is a soft ramp up of pressure due to the preinfusion chamber feature of e61. By switching out for the stiffer flow spring, I believe you negate that soft ramp up hence hitting the puck with all pressure at once if you leave the control fully open. Based on this assumption, I would no longer have the option of replicating my stock machine performance by just setting the flow valve to a fixed flow setting.

Also, did you show somewhere how you managed to get the pressure gauge lined up correctly?

You are only limiting the brew pressure, which is something you could do a lot easier and cheaper using an OPV. The flow control is about adjusting the pressure while you have coffee extraction and use variable pressure instead. You should this way be able to find extraction profiles that make the best out of your coffee.

Just wondering if you ship the quickmill flow controller to Australia? They are not available here. Would love to set one up on my Rubino. Thanks for the great video

Having a flow control set to max is usually not the same as not having a flow control, often you can get more than twice as high flow rate setting the flow control to max compared to not having a flow control.

Your pressure shouldn't be going that high. You need to get the pumps over pressure valve turned down so that it doesn't show anything higher than 9 bar on the head pressure manometer. This is a very common problem that James Hoffmann raised when he did a recent machine comparison. Too many machines leaving factories that haven't had their pressure properly calibrated.
