Revson: America's Grand Prix Superstar
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 июн 2024
- Peter Revson was an American Superstar; a race car driver who won in everything he drove and became a national celebrity. Since 1970, more Americans have walked on the Moon than won a Formula One race. Revson carried American F1 interest on his shoulders as he won races and chased the World Championship. But at the height of his popularity, it all ended.
From a privileged childhood to making it on his own, Revson climbed to the peak of auto racing's mountain by being one of the most talented drivers of his generation.

Thank you so much for your beautiful and surprisingly accurate tribute to my dear brother, Peter. After all these years of hearing and reading what I refer to as regurgitated misinformation, this is truly a breath of fresh air. I really appreciate all the time you must have spent putting this together and the intention of getting the facts straight, as well as the innuendos. Best regards, Jennifer. PS: The man at the funeral in the hat labeled as my father, Martin, is actually my uncle Charles.
I was at Silverstone as a young 19 year old in 1973 to see him win. it's strange how the death of someone you have never met can be so devastating, but i was truly shocked by his death. such a talent and i have no doubt he would have gone on to win the world championship. seventies motorsport was cruel. R.I.P. Peter.
You brother was a great driver. RIP Peter
@@gregfloh7732 Thank you, Greg.
Peter and Mark got me into racing as a young child. Great driver.
Your brother was a phenomenally talented race car driver and an even better human being. He made a difference.
I read his book and followed his career. I actually met him at Daytona airport before the IROC race and chatted about his prospects for the 1974 season. However I did not know about his Penske deal for 1975. I was sadden to hear of his death on the radio just a few weeks after our talk. I am 68 now and still drive track days. My helmet is done up in his design as my tribute to his career. I was wondering how I missed this over the years and then realized it was a new release. Well done documentary!
In the 54 years since the only Andretti to date to win the Indy 500 I don't think anyone has captivated the speedway and motorsports like Revson did.
Incredible job, I've been waiting so long for someone to do a profile on Peter Revson, I can't believe it's over an hour long!
RIP Revvie, 49 years ago today.
Him and Paul Newman must be the most famous racing drivers known to the public at this era, what a story
Yeah... Maybe Fangio, Senna, Reuteman, Piquet are a LOT better known... MAYBE....
@@nicolasgarcia248 I guess he meant the USA.
@@jeshkam i know. But he didn't say that... He said América
Peter Revson had been an unsung hero, up until now. I was in tears at the end. Amazing documentary so well put together.
Damn it, I’m gonna have to watch this 15 times because nascarman is just that good
Truly one of my racing heroes was Peter Revson. I got to see him race at the Ontario Motor Speedway, 1970-73 when I was a kid. Sadly I've become an even bigger after his tragic death by reading and viewing film. This video is fantastic and a well done tribute to one of Motor Sports lost legends. Gods Speed Peter Revson. Gone but never forgotten.
As a boy, Peter Revson was my favorite driver. Thanks for this.
Revson was my 1st favorite sports star. As a kid who was really into race cars he was the 1st one I started to root for. He was also my 1st encounter with death. I remember when the news came on in the afternoon saying he died and I was just devastated. I was really young and didn't really understand it but I was saddened I couldn't root for him anymore. Thanks for the video!
Speed with Style was one of the first books about the sport I ever read. When I found one in a used book store many years later, I grabbed it and it sits proudly on my bookshelf. The general public thought of Revson as a wealthy playboy but in reality he worked for everything he got. It was talent that got him drives. He's underappreciated now, and I hope this documentary shines some light on one of the best American drivers, ever
Thank you for an incredibly well done documentary about Peter Revson. I have followed Formula1 since the '60's and was always miffed at the way the American media portrayed Revson. He wasn't some playboy dillitante who "dabbled" in automobile racing. He was a truly talented driver who could win in anything, like Dan Gurney, Andretti, and Foyt to name some illustrious company. Finally, he was not the heir to the Revlon fortune. His uncle controlled that as Peter's father had detached himself from the company before Peter even started racing. He made his living behind the wheel and, sadly like so many drivers from that era, was gone too soon.
Jim Clark was my favorite driver when I was a kid, my dad sat me down and tried to explain how he died. I remember when Revson was killed, I was a senior in high school. We lost so many drivers back then, and all the way into the 90s. I stopped watching after Senna was killed, and started being an active fan again in 2006. Racing had such a mystique in the 1960s and 70s, far less today. Thanks for the great video and the memories.
You've produced some classics in your time. But this one is extraordinary! You uncovered a lot of things I never knew and footage I never knew existed. Awesome job
x2 and I am big on 50's - mid 70's but especially mid 60's to mid 70's sports cars and T/A
I'm only half hay through and this is one of the best things I've ever seen, why is this not on tv (well i know why...)
Thoroughly enjoyed those 71 minutes. I love learning about racing history and its characters. Flowed excellent, never felt overhanded on details and was a fantastic insight into a driver I was aware of but now can appreciate far more. You don't win in Can-Am without being a top driver. Shame he never got the 500 Victory he seemed destined for. Thanks for the great video 👍
Peter Revson was brilliant, the wonderful comment by Mark Donohue about his dedication to his craft says so much.
His GP wins in 1973 were magnificent, especially in Britain where he destroyed the rest of the field.
It's very interesting that he was replaced at Shadow by a Welshman (I'm Welsh), Tom Pryce, a brilliant talent who was also killed in South Africa in a tragic and absurd way in 1977.
Most importantly of all, this documentary clearly shows what a nice person he was - a true gentleman.
Speed With Style has been on my bookshelf for over 40 years and is STILL one of the best motor racing biographies, or auto-biographies ever written. After more than 28 years of involvement in motorsports, Peter's loss is, to me, second only to Mark's -- barely a year later. Motor sports is a dangerous pastime, but those who participate do it by choice and with full knowledge of the risks involved! Peter, you are missed.
Now more will know that a kind man with great talent. Was here. Thank you very much wonderful film
What a fantastic job. Thanks for this brilliant piece of work! Peter Revson deserves to be remembered for what he was a great racing driver one of the greats versatile and fast. Sadly even today when I hear Peter mentioned it's always accompanied by a reminder that he was somehow wealthy and the Revlon heir. Mark Donahue's words of respect are more accurate. RIP
An Irish racing can here , paying my respects to a racing legend . You did a great job in producing this classic video . Thank you for your time & trouble .
After seeing the 1968 AMC Trans Am, I want to start referring to the Domino's indycars as Javelins, lol
Great job. I have a lot of respect for Peter Revson. The guy was heir to one of the most well-known companies in the world, some in that position would have done nothing with ambition knowing they were set. Peter Revson though, chased a dream and was a damn good driver 1 of only 3 American born drivers to win a Formula One race (if you exclude all of the Indy 500 winners from the 50s).
There was actually 4 American born F1 race winners (excluding all of the Indy 500 winners from the 50s)
Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Richie Ginther and Peter Revson
Great job? He said Revson was "america's superstar".
@@nicolasgarcia248 At the time Revson was
In 1964 Phill Hill and Pedro Rodríguez were racing.
In 1971 Emerson Fittipaldi and Pedro were racing.
In 1972, 1973 and 1974 Carlos Reutemann, Emerson and Carlos Pace were racing.
How can you (or anyone else) consider Revson as "América Superstar" when Reutemann, Rodríguez, Pace and Fittipaldi are Racing on the same track?
Wow ! A good documentary of a talented driver who I saw in action four times at Indy's "500": 1969 through '72. Yet...the years - 1974 & '75 having the loss of Revson, Donahue and retired F1 champ and winner of the 1966 Indianapolis 500, Graham Hill (in a plane accident) took some of the "drive" out of me in my love of auto racing.
One thing for sure in Peter Revson's accomplishments: He should have been the "Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year" in 1969. I was at that race and noted his positions in that Revco V8 engine. It was sounding like the old NOVI engines of past in that race.
My first favorite driver was Jim Clark. My second ever favorite was Peter Revson. I bought his book! After Peter was killed, I didn't bother having favorite drivers for a long, long time. Alonso is my favorite F1 driver now, and I'm grateful it's kinda ok to pick a favorite driver again.
This really is the gold standard for a biopic/biography/documentary site wide. Need to point everyone here to see how it's done. I think one metric not outrightly stated is your obvious passion.
My goodness this is fantastic. Another great video! Thank you for putting this together and telling Peter Revson's story.
Fantastic documentary about a driver I knew nothing about. Until now.
A fitting tribute to a great racer who was truly ahead of his time. Thanks for telling Peter’s story.
What a fantastic documentary on racer Peter Revson, Really enjoyed this 🙂👍🏼
Back in 1966 when I was 13 I was looking forward to our annual trek to Sebring when some friends of ours said to watch for a young driver named Peter Revson. I think his family and theirs were friends. I had never heard of him. He and Skip Scott won the Sports category in their Essex Wire Ford GT40 and placed 3rd overall. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned. Thanks for the very enjoyable tribute to a great American driver.
At last an accurate accounting of America's greatest ever driver. Thanks! I met him when he was driving the McLaren in Can-Am racing at Edmonton Alberta, in 1971. I loved those McLarens!
I had the pleasure of meeting him for a brief moment at the 1973 GP of Barcelona at Montjuich circuit. I was nobody but a 16 years old nerd aficionado and he took the time to answer my unsolicited questions and talk to me (drivers were much more accessible then) Such a gentle spirit.
There was less fanfare and team control...
It was a different era for sure.
A great piece. I knew of Revson but didn't know much about him. This tells the whole story. I would have been a fan of his.
Same. And I didn't know a lot about Donahue either, except that he had passed while racing. Both of them seemed like great guys and great talents. The wide variety of racing Revson competed in seems almost wild in an era of specialization, truly an all-around racing legend.
He was kind enough to chat with me when I was 15 in 1970;;I was devastated by his loss.
This is a total GEM. It flows, it's real and best of all in my book, the footage and sound have not been restored and been made "glossy and artificial". The narrating voice is even top notch. 10 ot of 10 from me. That I can't recall giving close to any docu or movie. Thank you!!
This is an incredible video. Genuinely one of the finest things I've ever watched on RUclips. Amazingly well-researched and told. Thank you!
Great job!! Really enjoyed this!
Can't believe someone had enough knowledge about this man and finally shared it. My mother was a huge fan of him while my father was a nascar fan. I have always been interested in Revson since my mother told me about him. I even remember the day my mother told me about his fatal crash. I was 8 years old and never forgot. I had the news article for years
Coming up to 50 years since his parsing. McLaren F1 will undoubtedly have a tribute car at the FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2024 to be held at Albert Park Melbourne which I will be attending.
Thank you for the most excellent documentary. Thank you for your humility Peter. Rest in Peace Peter Revlon Revson.
I keep hoping for a feature-length film about the life and times of Peter Revson. Then I think of how Hollywood would give it their special 'treatment', and have another think about it.
This video is what Peter's story is all about. Kudos to you for an accurate and flowing review of Peter's life, both as a man and driver.
Your best one so far Brock!
All thanks to NASCARMAN's fantastic script. I agree, one of his best.
A very prolific and talented guy. Loved this
Your work is incredible, absolutely taught me stuff I never knew and absolutely made me learn someone who deserves to be on top 10 racers all time list in my opinion. I appreciate the incredible watch.
Remembering a legend. Tks.
Thank you for doing this video nascarman History and Brock Beard for the narration. I had only known a bit about Peter Revson via the old Nintendo Wii game, Indianapolis 500 Legends, and that he was one of the many drivers who died in the 60s and 70s in racing. I didn't realize his prestigious upbringing but his humbleness all the same, and the absolute skill he had as a driver.
Looking forward for more historical documentaries and new things to find out about racing's past.
Excellent documentary about a very talented and nice person. We competed at an IMSA race at Lime Rock in 1973, where Peter finished 4th in GTO and I was 5th. We spoke a few times that weekend and Peter came across as just another hardworking driver, definitely not a rich playboy.
Wow. Awesome.
I too was fortunate to see Revson race Indy cars at Ontario Motor Speedway in California in 1971, 72, and 73. He was a great racer.
TV standard documentary, that was truly excellent.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Peter in the paddock at Mosport on a practice day before the 1971 Can-Am race. He was very gracious to give some time to a young kid. I also got an autograph, which I still have.
As fate would have it, the very next year at the same place I had a similar conversation with Mark Donohue.
Back around 1973-74 Mark Donahue came to a car show in my area, I remember passing by him as he signed autographs but like an idiot never got one for myself (don’t know why, I was a racing freak back then) and maybe a year later he was gone
Know how you feel. Met Alan Kulwicki at Sears Point in 1992. The year he won the championship. Got his autograph and everything.
9 months later he died.
Absolutely brilliant effort and so deserved of a wonderful human being and talented driver, as Peter Revson. He was the reason I asked for and received the Aurora AFX racing set from my parents. I was devastated, at the age of 14, reading the NY Daily News about his passing in South Africa. Stays with me til this day.
Thank you.
Wow, this is fantastic. Well Done yet again nascarman and Brock
Wow, you're doing something special here, on this channel. You can't tell me old-school history channel, discovery, or even really old-school Biography channel could even come close to matching this quality, with the single exception that they'd have provided live interviews of family and friends, which would have been waste of time compared to this. It's the gold standard Ytube biography.
I remember Peter because I followed most of the series that he raced in. I watched him climb the ladder and get better and better. I fully expected him to get to the top and stay there for some time. His death was a shock.
This is amazing
Thank you for this video. I remember my 4th grade teacher pulled me aside in the hall way to ask if I knew who Peter was, he said he had passed away. My mom was the race fan in the family and with Mark D. coming out of retirement to drive the Penske F1 She pulled my brother and I out of school for a International sporting event, The USGP at the Glenn.
I wish I could have seen Peter drive in person.
Damn this was so good. Excellent work as always.
What a great documentary.
Thank you "nascarman" for this great video on a driver that I remember perfectly. P.S. please note that the driver speaking with Emerson Fittipaldi @1h04'59" is in my humble opinion Carlos Pace. Cheers from Milan.
Amazing work
Always my favorite driver.
We all dreamed we could live the life of Peter Revson . Fantastic documentary of a great American .
I've only watched a few minutes and I can tell you did an amazing job putting this together. Must have taken a lot of time to do, thank you for your efforts!
I can still remember like it was yesterday, the terrible news of Peter's tragic death. My oldest brother was a huge Peter Revson fan and was very upset about it. Peter proved without a doubt, he was one of the very best open wheeled race car drivers of all-times. He could do it all.
This is amazing thank you. I'm often passing by Kyalami racetrack, I always have a thought for Peter and Tom Pryce.
Another amazing project well done, guys!
I’ve heard who Peter Revson was, but I only know the name. Thanks for making a video about Peter!
Top job man. Keep up your great work. Cheers from Portugal!
Awesome 👏🏻 work, I knew very little about Peter before this. Not being old enough to have seen him drive I wasn’t aware of what talent he had behind the wheel just that he was an American 🇺🇸 in F1 and from the Revlon cosmetics family thanks for putting this together to remember a great American racer gone too soon.
Excellent , a great tribute to a fantastic driver.
Another excellent film!
Well put together
Wonderful Video,God Bless R.I.P. Racer
The quality of your documentaries is unreal!
This was a really great tribute, thank you
That was a very good documentary. Thank you!
Thanks for a fine documentary about a true American racing hero. Great job!!👍
Absolutely brilliant work, thank you so much!
The 70's were a very dangerous era in motor racing - Cevert, Revson, Ronnie, Mark, Rindt and others. Thankfully we were spared the loss of the great Niki Lauda. RIP and thanks for the memories.
It was reading about that very messy Canadian Grand Prix of 1973 that I first heard of Peter Revson. The impression I get is that the Safety Car (a Posche 914) wasn't used in an official capacity, and after the chaos in the timing and scoring that day, it's understandable why F1 was initially reluctant to used them in an official capacity. It wasn't until 1993 that F1 would use one in an official capacity
Thank you
One of the best Historic Documentaries I've ever seen
Thanks for the amazing video, and it's also one that adds a bit of morbid context.
Revson died in an accident in 1974, his friend and rival Donohue died 18 months later in another accident before the Penske wins a race in 1976, and finally... Revson's full time replacement at Shadow (and in my opinion a driver with similar World Champion aspirations as Revson), Tom Pryce was killed at the same GP as Peter in 1977. It was a really fun but indeed, a sad era, too.
Amazing Project. Very well done 👌
GREAT doc about peter, i remember him from my AFX days seeing him on tv. unfortunately, they did not show much racing on tv in those days, but still heard of him. thanks
Peter Revson had the skills and experience to win the Indianapolis 500 and the Formula One World Championship, but he couldn't control in unforeseen. A life and career unfulfilled. Rest in peace.
I'm a huge motor racing fan, but never knew how talented Revson was. Thank you for sharing this!
I was at the Laguna Seca Can-Am in 1971 when Peter won his fifth race. Then two weeks later I was at Riverside to see him clinch the Can-Am title.
Great driver. A very talented driver. So many died before their time.
Thank you for taking the time to highlight and honor my childhood hero.
Peter Revson was the greatest!
Thank you for doing this, I've learned some things about Peter that I never knew before. I was always fascinated by him ever since I watched the F1 documentary (Champions Forever), and even though he died many years before my time, I've felt he should have been more famous than what he was. By the way Peter's father Martin died only a few years ago at an incredible age of 105.
I got his Autograph at Indy. I still have it.
Incredible work!!! Revson is always so heavily underestimated, nearly forgotten, great to see this tribute
There are some mistakes in the subtitles…
Great documentary, I’d put Peter on the short list of drivers who should’ve won the Indy 500. If he’d been with Donahue on the Penske team in the early 70’s he definitely would’ve won. Peter was very much like Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt in that you could put him into any kind of race car and he’d find a way to win with it.
Oh God, this was tearfully beautifully done
That’s brilliant work guys. Thanks! ❤❤❤
Fantastic work! I learned a lot! Thanks.
Just a quick note: on 1:04:58, the man who's talking to Emerson Fittipaldi is José Carlos Pace, on of Brazil's biggest "what if" on motor racing.
I know several people that were at Kyalami that day. I’ve heard about the accident my entire life. Tragic ending to someone that pulled themselves up by their bootstraps alone!
Excellent work on an excellent video
Unlike Lance Stroll, Peter Revson's dad didn't buy him a racing team! Peter was a very good driver who made it on his own merits. There's an article by, I believe Pete Lyons, who describes what it was like riding in a McLaren Can-Am car with Peter - great stuff!
No need for the dig at Stroll he isn't slow, plenty have made F1 through money rather than talent and been literal seconds off the pace.
@@LB1973 As much as I almost hate to admit it, Lance Stroll does have talent. Without his father's money, I don't think he would ever have gotten to F1 but he has shown he belongs. Revson, on the other hand, never bought a ride or ever had one bought for him.
There is no need to take a shot at Lance Stroll. Totally classless and shows what a gutter human being you are.
The two most "handsome and glamourous" drivers in F1 from the early 1970s, Peter Revson and François Cévert, died very violently and gruesomely within months of each other. I remember the shock, as a young teenager enthusiast of the sport, when hearing about, and seeing horrible images of both crash scenes. Revson and Cévert were more than handsome and very fast; they were great guys.
