.5 to .33 of a student loan 😅 with land, driveway, a vehicle, and tools (for a plethora of professions), about the same as a student loan. Except one is easier to attain, with no guarantee of mid to high end work at the end of it, and with nearly no way to absolve it. Less if you don't need a polebarn as large for whatever profession.
Good breakdown of all costs. My 34x50 was built around the same time and costs were similar. Always lots of variables in construction that I found can really impact the overall cost. Seems like I’m never done as I’m working on the inside now too. Great looking garage!
Appreciate it! As I finish the interior the cost is increasing even more. I am doing all the work myself to help save on labor. I am trying to find time to document that process also. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I went off your video. I just finished my 36x56 and same 2 tone idea. Its total is at 55,200. I knew the contractor, offered him the same labor rate 15k and also concrete was same rate 5k in crete, 4in labor. I went with 2x4 every 2ft post built it looks almost identical!! And also same rate for metal igot from my local amish community. 9k for metal everything to the screws! Thank you verymuch for your help!!
I'm glad I could help. It's always nice to hear that I was able to help someone. It's the whole reason I put out videos. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I think your costs were right on but one thing that anyone building one should look into is getting your wood from a local sawmill. The saw mills around me sell hardwood, mostly oak for far cheaper than the local lumber yards and big home improvement stores such as Lowes and Home Depot sell their pressure treated and non-treated softwood lumber for. You will want to get this wood long before you build, at least eight months to let it dry out as it isn't dried yet but you will end up with a stronger and more bug and rot resistant building than you would with conventional lumber at around half the cost.
Just found your videos, very nice shop, I know you have put alot work into your building and $MONEY too, a great shop for doing anything you want to do, AUTOMOTIVE, etc, you explained everything in detail and I appreciate that, lot of folks don't do that, hope you enjoy your shop and future projects, THANKS for sharing, SUBSCRIBED.
Thanks for the details on cost and the other videos in this series (I watched the failed electrical inspection video first). We bought a home a few months ago that has 2 barns. One is basically the same as yours, but a bit smaller at 28x40 and it has a conventional wood sheathed roof with asphalt shingles. It was built to be an actual barn and one wall is open to an outside fenced in area where the original owner's horses would graze. It still has a dirt floor and interior half wall to keep the animals from getting in to the the storage/tractor parking area. I plan to build it out as a 2 section shop: the open side will be closed in and a full size wall will replace the half wall turning that portion (roughly 1/3 of the building) into a wood shop and the rest will be for working on cars or other vehicles. It's probably going to take me a year to get everything done based on time and budget. I want to do as much myself as possible and your series here is going to be very helpful. The barn won't have solar, but the house came with a 6.7Kw solar array already. I also plan to add battery storage for that, although we need to get a handle on the amount of power we use vs production to make sure there is excess to be captured by a battery.
Congrats on the new property! It's taken me roughly 8 months up to this point to finish out the interior of mine. I still have a bathroom to completely finish. I am holding off on that since none of the pipes were installed before the concrete was poured. I gotta saw up the concrete in that room and do it right. Make main water connections at the street and all the fun stuff. 😀 I don't have batteries on my solar system since I can't justify the cost. The ROI is not quick enough. Maybe someday I will find a deal I can't pass up and grab it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck with your build!
What hard earn money tools you might have . Just saying and asking more to my questions later , but thank you Sir for information. I will subscribe to your channel. Think you are a honest man in world, and it feel like nowadays they are not many out there
I have a 24x36x15 pole building getting built this year in my back yard total cost is $49,000. They're building a 8x24 loft inside and additional 1500 sq ft of concrete pad/driveway to pour. Im also limited with 9 foot wide entrance on either side lf the house so that complicates things as well. I think the price is fair given limited access and they're doing everything from dirtwork to final steps as well.
24ft trusses help save you a lot. Congrats on the new shop! There's nothing like having a nice quality space to do stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Well done, thanks for taking time to put this all together. Being 1 years ago 2023? prices should be close to the same although prices always seem to go up.
I actually built in March of 2022. Lumber was at its peak. Some materials prices have come down since then. On the flip side, other materials are higher. All in all, it would probably cost about the same to do it in 2024. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Could you have done rafters/joists instead of trusses.? Reasoning...it seems you lose ALOT of space. Either storage or possible living space using trusses. How thick a concrete pad did you pour and was there any plumbing for the building? Water/sewer/drainage? Thx
I thought about building it to have open space in the attic or loft but ultimately decided it was not within my budget. Concrete is 5in thick. I did put a drain in. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
When did you build this pole Shed? I got a quote to concrete half of the building same size as yours for 9k almost very bid was 9k for half! You got a great deal for a little over 5k for the whole thing! Wow!
The 5.6k was for concrete material only. The labor was another 3k. Plus the rebar. So the total was around 9k for it all. We did this in March of 2022.
Super interesting... I've been watching all your videos on this building; the area, the flat land, even the old barns and other stuff in the background. Is this in Upstate NY somewhere? That's where I am, and this all looks super familiar.
Great Job Buddy!! Beautiful building too... You made your Video clear & to the point.. I was very surprised with the gravel work on the amount & price!! Overall finial price was surprising! A lot less than I expected for sure!!! Thanks for your Video WELL DONE!!
Great video , and great information. Beside on going bigger in side what would have done different or add to the building? Like heat floor , and more on the installation on the walls ! A loft in there or maybe inside an extra wall block off so people who come can't see behide that wall
Looking back now, I would have built a stick built... Just like a house. The metal siding is causing a ton of communication interference. It's been a nightmare getting signal inside. Other than that, I love it!
Thanks for the informational breakdown. Added to my notebook....planning as much as possible before I sell from suburb and relocate to rural location. Much appreciated 👍
That's exactly what we did. Left the burbs for rural. I must admit, though, it's the busiest 2 years of my life lol. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Thanks Justin! That was an honest breakdown of your build. Would be interested to know if you have a phase 2. Example, cement or grave around structure, add a bathroom or other room inside, side extension or carport for boat, RV or tracker. I’m an electrician by trade so I’m planning on taking on that when the time comes to build mine. God bless!
Appreciate it. I do plan on making a follow-up video on what it cost me to finish the interior of this building in the future. It is taking me forever because I am doing all the work myself. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I like your approach. Straight to the point with tons of information. It looks awesome as well! Thanks so much for sharing this info. I'm in eastern PA. Where abouts are you located just so I've an idea of what prices to expect.
We are using a double bubble wrap. Adds a vapor barrier and a small reflective r value. It's the white you see all over the walls and ceiling. That was included in my metal cost, because I bought that at time of the metal purchase. We also have standard ridge vents. If I finish this building I will add one decent sized attic vent on each side of the building. As of right now, those are not needed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I built a 16x24 barn myself in 2022-2023 and I have 20k into it so far. no windows or doors yet, no gutters. 1/2" plywood sides. no solar, no electrical yet
And lumber tanked since March of 2022. My solar was not included in my overview, thats a whole separate video. Congrats on building it yourself, though. That was my goal, but my timeline stopped me from building it myself. Kinda glad I paid those guys to do it. Finishing the interior has been a job. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
@Linda Stewart Not interested in hurricanes. 😳 Love FL, though. 😁 We seem to be in Tornado Alley now. F5's rollin' in 20 minutes south of us is scary stuff.
I guess 'cheap' is a relative term. This sounds extremely reasonable for that size building. I've seen some very similar sized ones for more than $20,000 over what yours cost with fewer doors/windows.
Good video. I don’t think you can go too big. My neighbor had a 40 x 70 and he said he wished he had gone bigger. Was the lumber reasonable or was it during the scarcity when all lumber was sky high? How much more would it be to have a steel ceiling and interior walls?
Thank you very much. It's so hard to find straight forward costs for buildings like this. Questions: is your interior height 12ft? Also did you design this building or was it a "package deal"
@@JustinsProject thanks. We bought 11 acres almost a year ago. I'm building a cabin currently and then plan on starting my "dream shop" once I get the cabin finished. I was planning a 30x40 with lean-tos on each side but now I think a 36x56 is within my budget, thanks to this video
I might have missed it but I didn't catch any details on planning - Did you do the design or did you pay somebody? It doesn't look like you got an all in one kit but I could be mistaken.
I designed it using the Menards project planner on their website. midwest.menards.com/postframe-web/redirect.do#/home - Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
Wow! I built mine at the peak of lumber prices. 70-80k for a 24-foot wide 36-foot, I agree, is RIDICULOUS! Hopefully, you can find a good builder who will take care of you on your build. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I chose those doors because I am familiar with how to install them. I also got a decent deal on them considering prices. Rated at R11. I do plan to finish the inside and I actually worked on framing this week. I'll have a video coming out on that very soon. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Sorry if this is a double post but I don’t see my previous post. I like your color combo, do you recall what color your side walls are and the metal manufacturer? I’m thinking of going with a white and black build but your combo really looks great. Thanks
No problem, I will post my reply here also. I purchased the metal from a local manufacturer that roll presses it from a large roll. Menards has this type of metal if you are looking for a big box store to buy it from also. The color I have is Black and Charcoal Gray. Most places will have those colors in stock because they are fairly popular. Thanks for watching and commenting, 👍
Yes I did. The crew that poured the concrete floor, sealed it. They had a bunch left over from a commercial job and tossed in with their quote. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Appreciate it 🙏 I do plan on slowly finishing it out with full electric and a bathroom and possibly an office space. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
You may be able to go to Menards. In the back where the pros go, ask for recommendations for metal buildings. They usually have local builders that they can recommend. At my Menards, they had about 10 different builders. Or find local metal suppliers and go in there and ask for recommendations. Most builders purchase from those guys so they know the ones who are busy and have good feedback. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I went 12-foot ceilings after 5in concrete, but if I had to do it over, I would probably do 10 feet ceilings for my needs. I went 12 feet as a just in case. Plus, it allowed for the 10x10 commercial doors. I would probably change the doors to my original design of an 18ft x 8 door if I had to do it over. I am happy with everything, though. It really comes down to your personal needs. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
It would cost about the same for that shed to be built here in Australia, in Australian dollars. Im surprised you went with timber, as we done use timber for shed construction any more its all pressed steel beams and Z and C purlins, its a nice large shed, as long as white ants dont eat your timber it will last a life time and more.
Title says not cheap, but I'm really cool with this cost, lol. I would totally spend another 20 to 30k to make it into a full house with as much as I can fit in for that!
Yes, the double bubble wrap. It's not really insulation but more of a vapor barrier. I am in the process of finishing the building now. So the cost will go up, and I am going to insulate the walls and attic. I'll put together a video on the cost of all that in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I'm in central KY. I bought lumber at peak pricing but could not wait. ONE 14ft 2x4 at that time was over $32. Hopefully prices are not like that in your area at this time. Never know though, everything is much higher than it was just several months back. Good luck 👍🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Hi Dusty, I have a complete playlist on how I installed the solar myself and how much everything cost me. Be sure to check out my solar playlist. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
just watched a guy build a 40 x 72 foot building. so far it has cost him 200.000 thousand just labor and building alone. and he is nit done yet. adding a porch later to one side. these buildings are just way to much. will never spend that kind of money. I think people are being taken advantage of.
200k 😳 I thought mine was expensive. I built it at the peak of lumber prices, too. I'm working on finishing the interior by myself. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍🏻
'preciate your time for this. Helpful. Central KY is a ways from me, (North IN) but probably similar cost. I have found a local lumber/truss company in Mishawaka that will supply trusses cheaper than menards, all yellow pine at 1/2 the spacing. (2' vs 4').
That is awesome! I would recommend 2' OC because in the end when finishing out 2' OC turns out to be almost as cheap once you add in all the purlin hangers and purlins to hang the insulation and wall board. Thanks for watching and commenting!
12 feet from concrete to the bottom of the truss. I am working on finishing the interior. What a job for one guy. 😁Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Thanks for disclosing the price? So Many RUclipsrs make excuses why they don't disclose the price. Gives me a good estimate on how much mine will cost. Now I know not to pay $100,000 for my building.
I assume that you acted as the general contractor? I have been wanting to add onto my existing building but the quotes have all come in at over $50 per square foot. I have been trying to find carpenters do put up the structure but they are all tied into contractors around here and won't work for an individual. Nice building.
I was hands on during the building process. I was going to build it myself but needed it within a 2 week period. It all worked out. The group of guys that built it were great. Showed up on time, worked hard and never made excuses. Thank you for watching and commenting! 👍
Great video great info Threequestions. Why didn’t you go with a package from someone like Menards ? Advantages, disadvantages ? Did you consider an FBI or Morton building ? Lastly did I miss something as when you quoted everything you mentioned only the gutters pricing included the labor but what about the labor to build it all ? Thanks After your build what would you do different if you had to build another?
I did purchase the package from Menards but chose to buy the metal from a local manufacturer because it was 30% cheaper on the metal and a better thickness. Other than that, almost everything was purchased at Menards. The good thing at Menards is that you can custom design your build, and they will build a materials list around that design. I considered Morton's, but the cost was so high I got priced out. I covered the labor cost for building and concrete. The gutters were a package deal from a local installer that did not break down materials and labor... just a price for making and installing them. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
@@JustinsProject Thanks. That helps a lot. I missed that you were including the labor I’ll watch again His thick did you go on the metal ? With your experience do you have Any thoughts on using a pole barn shell for a pole barn home ? I understand that’s a loaded question I’m just thinking about building one and the only way you learn anything is by asking and seeking advise from others With the experience you have what are your initial first thoughts on what would you want done differently ( if anything ) on how your barn was built if it were to be for a home ?
@@roberts4411 If your main goal is to convert it into a home, I would not build a pole style. I would frame it with 2x6 walls like a stick built home. There are a lot of reasons for that and very hard to explain in a short response. If I had it to do over, I would have gone that method. I thought going pole style would save money, reality: it is not, as I starting to finish it. In most areas, you will have to obtain a certificate of occupancy. Depending on the area, the first thing to do is reach out to planning and zoning and see if what your looking to do is allowed. I know it sucks, but it would be terrible to start a project that big and be told you can complete it for what it was intended for.
@@roberts4411 Some banks won't finance a pole barn (poles in ground) style construction. I would have a conventional footer and slab foundation if I was building a home to live in.
Why does someone need 700HP? 😁 But seriously, there will be a couple lofts in ceilings, and those will be about 4 feet for extra storage. I'll have an update video coming soon. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I'm not sure I would call it garbage. It's a great moisture barrier. True, though, the double bubble is not an insulation. It's a reflective thermal moisture barrier. However, when used in conjunction with my now R-38 in the ceilings, the shop is exceeding my expectations. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
No fluff. Right to the point. That's refreshing and right on point. Thank you

SHARP. TY
Once hardwood becomes dry it becomes much harder & so drilling & nailing takes more time than conventional lumber plus that stuff is very heavy

Good video. I don’t think you can go too big. My neighbor had a 40 x 70 and he said he wished he had gone bigger.
Was the lumber reasonable or was it during the scarcity when all lumber was sky high?
How much more would it be to have a steel ceiling and interior walls?
It was built at the peak of the lumber scam. I'm not sure what a steel one would run for just the shell. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Thank you very much. It's so hard to find straight forward costs for buildings like this.
Questions: is your interior height 12ft?
Also did you design this building or was it a "package deal"
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Yes 12ft btw - I designed it it was not a pre fab.
@@DaileyWoodworks Congrats 👏 Nothing like some land and a nice shop.
Very good detailed explanation!
Much appreciated 🙏 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I was looking at building a 24x36 and I was getting quotes of 70-80k for a pole barn with no concrete no insulation or anything. Absolutely ridiculous
Wow! I built mine at the peak of lumber prices. 70-80k for a 24-foot wide 36-foot, I agree, is RIDICULOUS! Hopefully, you can find a good builder who will take care of you on your build. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Good job man for information I like your information👍👍
Much appreciated. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I love the color of your building! What is the color name of the gray color?
Thanks. That is Charcoal Gray. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Incredible video very professional
Very much appreciated 🙏 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Outstanding
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Nice shop sir! What made you choose that type doors over the roll up type?
@@JustinsProject Thanks for the reply, enjoy your shop
A good price for a building that size. Where did you get your garage doors, Justin?
I purchased all lumber, windows, doors and garage doors at Menards. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Great details. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Did you use a penetrating concrete sealer to keep the concrete from getting stains?
Yes I did. The crew that poured the concrete floor, sealed it. They had a bunch left over from a commercial job and tossed in with their quote. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Awesome video
Appreciate it 🙏 I do plan on slowly finishing it out with full electric and a bathroom and possibly an office space. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Great informative video where is this located just wondering Thank's! I live in MICH.
Appreciate it! I am located in KY. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks! Awesome!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
When did you built the building? Are post set in the ground or on concrete pilling?
We built the shell in March of 2022. The posts are in the ground 4 ft. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Have a suggestion on who to have build mine?
You may be able to go to Menards. In the back where the pros go, ask for recommendations for metal buildings. They usually have local builders that they can recommend. At my Menards, they had about 10 different builders. Or find local metal suppliers and go in there and ask for recommendations. Most builders purchase from those guys so they know the ones who are busy and have good feedback. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Good video, curious where you’re build is located; permits and local Fun stuff
Built in central Ky and overall the permits were very simple. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you 🙏🏾
You welcome 🙏 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Only $5,680 + $3,000 labor for all that concrete?!?! I must've gotten ripped ogg on my driveway! =(
I thought it was a great deal. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
great video, sorry if i missed it but how tall is it? I am building a 30x40 & I am unsure on how tall to go. What part of KY are you from?
I went 12-foot ceilings after 5in concrete, but if I had to do it over, I would probably do 10 feet ceilings for my needs. I went 12 feet as a just in case. Plus, it allowed for the 10x10 commercial doors. I would probably change the doors to my original design of an 18ft x 8 door if I had to do it over. I am happy with everything, though. It really comes down to your personal needs. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Thank you
You are welcome. I spent this week framing inside. Hope to have a new video out on that very soon. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Much appreciated!

Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Title says not cheap, but I'm really cool with this cost, lol. I would totally spend another 20 to 30k to make it into a full house with as much as I can fit in for that!
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Did you mention the cost of the insulation?
Yes, the double bubble wrap. It's not really insulation but more of a vapor barrier. I am in the process of finishing the building now. So the cost will go up, and I am going to insulate the walls and attic. I'll put together a video on the cost of all that in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
great..straight to the point!!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Hey Justin - What part of the country are you in? I am looking to build in Delaware and am wondering if the costs are comparable.

Curious the Solar panel cost?
great vid. Sub'd
Much appreciated 🙏 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
'preciate your time for this. Helpful. Central KY is a ways from me, (North IN) but probably similar cost. I have found a local lumber/truss company in Mishawaka that will supply trusses cheaper than menards, all yellow pine at 1/2 the spacing. (2' vs 4').
That is awesome! I would recommend 2' OC because in the end when finishing out 2' OC turns out to be almost as cheap once you add in all the purlin hangers and purlins to hang the insulation and wall board. Thanks for watching and commenting!
what is the clear height on the interior walls?
12 feet from concrete to the bottom of the truss. I am working on finishing the interior. What a job for one guy. 😁Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Who did you use for providing materials?
I sources the metal through a local manufacturer and everything else I got at Menards.
What was the wall height of the building?
12ft. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
@@JustinsProject Thanks for the quick reply. I am a very similar building in Red Iron. 36 x 55
i like your building
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
Damn that would be double in CA
I bet. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Man you got the concrete on the cheap!
Yes, I got a good deal on that. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
I was thinking the same thing. I was expecting the slab to be at least twice that or more. Great job looks awesome.
Thanks for disclosing the price? So Many RUclipsrs make excuses why they don't disclose the price. Gives me a good estimate on how much mine will cost. Now I know not to pay $100,000 for my building.
I am glad to help. Good luck with your build. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
What? I just got quoted 70k for a shell and an extra 25/sqft for the foundation. Lol
For a 40x50
What part of the country are you in? That is pretty steep.
Sounds reasonable to me
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Great video great info Threequestions. Why didn’t you go with a package from someone like Menards ? Advantages, disadvantages ?
Did you consider an FBI or Morton building ?
Lastly did I miss something as when you quoted everything you mentioned only the gutters pricing included the labor but what about the labor to build it all ?
Thanks
After your build what would you do different if you had to build another?
I did purchase the package from Menards but chose to buy the metal from a local manufacturer because it was 30% cheaper on the metal and a better thickness. Other than that, almost everything was purchased at Menards. The good thing at Menards is that you can custom design your build, and they will build a materials list around that design. I considered Morton's, but the cost was so high I got priced out. I covered the labor cost for building and concrete. The gutters were a package deal from a local installer that did not break down materials and labor... just a price for making and installing them. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
@@JustinsProject
Thanks. That helps a lot. I missed that you were including the labor I’ll watch again
His thick did you go on the metal ?
With your experience do you have Any thoughts on using a pole barn shell for a pole barn home ? I understand that’s a loaded question I’m just thinking about building one and the only way you learn anything is by asking and seeking advise from others
With the experience you have what are your initial first thoughts on what would you want done differently ( if anything ) on how your barn was built if it were to be for a home ?
I would have a conventional footer and slab foundation if I was building a home to live in.
why do you need a building so tall
Why does someone need 700HP? 😁 But seriously, there will be a couple lofts in ceilings, and those will be about 4 feet for extra storage. I'll have an update video coming soon. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻

Pole building vs metal building
Depends
No electrical?
Check out my playlist, I have completed so much more work on it. I'm still trying to finish it up. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Folks, if you are building a pole building sheet those roofs. That fake roll insulation is garbage in the ceilings.
