the paper where they have the melody annotated: is it a musical score or a map for them to place the nails at given coordinates (that correspond to pitches)? can someone please answer that? is it possible to find a "score" for such a mechanism?
i think it was just the score for the music. the bar that went across the drum had the notes on it and the little wheel he turned to advance it had the timing on it.

It indeed was the score; it is the normal score they use for playing piano. Or better: for organ, because the carillonist plays as well with his feet.
