    These came out way before my time but I grew up with the hammer films, thanks to my grandma and I'd take these films over any of the crap horrors they release today. Cushing and Lee set the standard for horrors all those years ago and that standard has never been reached since.
    Films today need to show blood and gore to make them work but all you needed to hear was the infamous music of a Hammer Horror Movie and you'd be cowering behind the cushions before the movie even started!

    The 1958 Hammer film Dracula, or Horror of Dracula as my copy is titled, is still one of the most finest adaptations of Bram Stoker's novel. Terence Fisher's powerful direction combined with great performances of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, the best Van Helsing and Dracula ever, creates a great horror classic. This trailer trully does justice for this film.

    I LOVE HAMMER AND GREW UP WITH IT! never met Cushing but my friend Tom Johnson was his biographer. I did meet Chris Lee, hung out with Ingrid Pitt and James Bernard and have upteen signed pics, signed by Cushing and Lee together & a really cool Dracula Prince of Darkness still signed by the entire cast. Alot of Oliver Reed and Michael Ripper signed picts, also have Peter Cushing's shoes from Capt Clegg. I got autographs of Hammer people that would blow you away. David Peel, Prudence Hyman

This will be included in a theatrical showing on Saturday, 18th February at 3pm at the Flicker Club as part of the VAULT festival in London. A blu-ray release of this and many other Hammer films has aslo been announced. Good news for Hammer fans everywhere!

    Hammers Dracula, is the Best ever made, in my opinion. The great Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee & a cast of believable, character actors, set the story alight,with the wonderful fast paced direction of the great Terence Fisher. This film is set in the right. gothic period, with wonderful sets and costumes. Ace Cinematographer Jack Asher's wonderful brilliant lighting and camera placement beats any CGI photography effects of today. All his black & white and Colour films are truly painted with light. This Film & all the Classic Hammer films of the Late 50's & early 60's deserve to be on 4K to show how splendid, theses gothic films really are.

      That's not entirely true. And the old vampire unaffected by a crucifix twist was played out in The Fearless Vampire Killers in 1967, and a faithless priest in Hammer's own Dracula Has Risen From the Grave in '68 also plays with the stereotypes of religious figures being a threat to Dracula. Hollywood still uses the tropes when it suits them.

    I wonder when they say Uncut at the end if it includes the original mushy crumbling scene of Christopher Lee's disintegrating face which was used in many stills at the time instead of the cut to a skull and skeleton fingers etc? Hope to see a BFI DVD as they have made several excellent DVD's of all kinds of movies including a version of the original Nosferatu with a new score by the late James Bernard ( he of Hammer Films fame ) which is well worth checking out. • @4-dman464
    @4-dman464 4 года назад

    Wrong. It is not "completely restored." 2 powerful reaction shots from Christopher Lee and one cutaway of a disintegrating limb to bridge the cuts have not been reintegrated.
    You can see them - - but only on the Extra raw footage of source Japanese
    reels. So as 'the nearest we are likely to get as the definitive
    version,' it's a botch job. Those missing frames are at least as
    startling and dramatic as any footage they DID reinsert in the
    disintegration scene. I informed BFI, and they couldn't care less.

    • @RobertJESimpson
      @RobertJESimpson  11 месяцев назад

      To be fair, this video was originally posted 15 years ago following the BFI's restoration, and before the Japanese reels had been recovered.
      Whether they should be included in a UK restoration or kept as separate is open for debate - they were never screened in UK or US cinemas on the initial release, so I'd argue being kept within the context of the Japanese reels is more appropriate and historically accurate.

    • @RobertJESimpson
      @RobertJESimpson  11 месяцев назад

      The colour grade on this restoration was hotly debated at the time of release. One would need to compare it to the old VHS versions to see how much of a difference there is. Any darkening is an aesthetic choice - sometimes supported by surviving negatives/prints, or other notes.

  • @VonWenk
    @VonWenk 3 года назад

    I'm curious as to what's been "restored," and I find it funny that this credits only Christopher Lee, considering he's only credited as an "and" in the actual movie (at least in the prints I've seen).

    • @RobertJESimpson
      @RobertJESimpson  11 месяцев назад +1

      Don't think I've replied to your comment before now. Sorry! The whole film was restored by the BFI c. 2007 - picture painstakingly scanned, cleaned and colour timed. The original UK title card was also used (previous home video releases in the UK had used the US 'Horror of Dracula' title card). Then for the Lionsgate BluRay release in the UK circa 2012, they recovered the longer Japanese edit, and restored several seconds of cut material into the film as well.

    • @RobertJESimpson
      @RobertJESimpson  11 месяцев назад +1

      Debated widely at the time of release. I saw the restoration in cinemas in both 35mm and digital at the time, and the 35mm wasn't as blue-toned for some reason. Supposedly there was evidence that a blue-tone was sought by the original makers, but there's times its definitely a bit OTT for me.

      Each actor was right for his film, each film was right for it's time.

      Sadly Lugosi was ridiculously theatrical in the role, no one told him how to restrain his stage performance for in front of the camera, so his leering and posing just seem hammy and hilarious today. A shame as in later films he showed that could act well.
