In this video, we look at how metals react with water and with dilute acids and how we can use this information to order the elements by reactivity. We then explore why some metals are more reactive than other in terms of their ability to form a positive ion.

qutesion for some one who has done their GCSE's , did you need reactivity series . did u need to memorise which reacts with acid and water and which don't ?? do u need to know this, if no would it have helped to know it off by heart . ?
Watching this in chemistry! Thanks.
Bro!!! He has such a cute smile 😊
The smile it so iconic omds
I'm struggling to understand this question in my textbook.
"A student placed a strip of magnesium into a solution of zinc chloride.
What, if anything, would of observed, and why?"
Now in the answer part it says that a black solid would form and that magnesium would displace the chlorine from the zinc. I just don't get why a black solid would form when in the videos online it shows a yellow/orange solid formed.
pretty sure zinc is black, and since it's been displaced by the magnesium, it's now present
It might be an error in the book

ARE YOUR VIDEOS ON THE OLD SPEC FOR AQA?
GREAT VIDEOS BY THE WAY
Yes the old videos are for AQA. The new (9-1) videos are for all the exam boards.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
GREAT VIDEOS, GREAT HUMAN BEING.GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL YOUR OFFSPRING.
hello sir, I'm in year 10 and my chemistry teacher told us that we are expected to memories the reactivity series but here you say we are not? I'm confused on what to do.
No you're not required to memorise the whole series. You need to learn what is in my video on the reactivity series.
@@Freesciencelessons thank you sir.
i have my mocks in literally 3 days and my chemistry teacher said we need to memorise the reactivity series too ?? ughfh
hi these videos are really useful and I was wandering if they were just a supplement or could I get all my notes from your videos
You can get your notes from my videos.
do we need to know the reactivity series for our exams?
thanks dad
my teacher said that magnesium does react with water but its a slow process
It's so slow you would never see it. It does react fairly fast with steam.
@@Freesciencelessons is that because of surface area or because of the thermal energy?
Great video sir. May i ask if there difference between GCSE and IGCSE topic wise. In my school im taking 7 igcse subjects and so its called ice. Any idea on what ice is?
Yes, ICE is simply a name given to a certain combination of IGCSEs. It's designed so that students take a range of different subjects rather than a narrow selection.
There are differences between GCSE (UK) and IGCSE. The IGCSE has more topics and more depth. However, there is a load of overlap so you should find a lot of my videos very useful.
whenever you say " in my previous video..." please send the link below as I don't understand

Hello Sir! What does this mean? Mixing of reagents to

TY!!!
I got my chemistry mock in a few hours. Wish me luck 🙏
What did you get
I love you sir, with all my heart.
Hi sir, the CGP 9-1 revision guide says that we have to learn the reactivity series, but your video says that we don't. Thank you for the clarification.
On page 40 (bottom) of the AQA Chemistry spec, it tells you what you need to know. You should be able to recall how eight metals react with water or dilute acids and place them in order of reactivity. You don't need to learn the entire reactivity series. They might also give you experimental data on how other metals react and ask you to construct a reactivity series.
@@the_hasnat Please stop calling me a cute zebra I like her shiny goat but doesn't include lithium
@@kindkittkat53 please stop calling me a careless zebra instead try learning how copper saves gold
Must we memorise how each metal reacts (vigorously/slowly)?
That's what I want to know
@@MonkOrMan I think so on the specification it says:
Students should be able to:
• recall and describe the reactions, if any, of potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and copper with water or dilute acids and where appropriate, to place these metals in order of reactivity
• explain how the reactivity of metals with water or dilute acids is related to the tendency of the metal to form its positive ion
• deduce an order of reactivity of metals based on experimental results.

thank u very much for sharing this info in really easier way u have remove my confusion thanks a lot again.
Hello Shaun, what does the aqa gcse chemistry spec mean when it says we need to "recall and describe the reactions, if any, of....[the metals]....with water or dilute acids? What do we need to know about these reactions?
Firstly, you need to know the products of the reaction (ie with water and also with dilute acids). Then you need to know how quickly the metals react with these.
@@Freesciencelessons Thanks for your reply. When you say 'How quickly', is that just meaning, "Rapidly, quite rapidly, no reaction", as stated at 3:00 or do we need to know more than just this (the part where it says "describe the reactions" in the spec is making me think how much I actually need to know about them...?
Thank you
good video
Sir, are you 100% sure you don’t have to know the reactivity series coz I have my exams coming up in a few days and my chemistry teacher told me that you have to know it.

MY GUY!!
Hi Sir, I just wanted to ask you about effective revision techniques for science because I am in the process of learning your revision cards and have watched the videos when the revision cards haven't made sense and it is a reoccurring theme that I continue to get stuck when I actually try to transfer my knowledge onto the actually exam questions. I usually get around a B and to push my grade up I need a significant boost and a way of getting around exam questions, because it seems I have a pretty good level of understanding with the content, however i get to an exam paper and really struggle transferring my knowledge. Just to note I am taking my exams this summer and would appreciate any help.
Thank you
Ok this is what I think you need to do. You need to leave the revision cards for a while and watch the videos. The revision cards are great for facts but they won't help understanding as much as the videos and it sounds like that's where you're struggling. Watch the videos first, really get your head around a topic and then learn the cards.
Thank you so much, and would you advise making notes whilst watching the videos ?
Yes lots of students do that.
Hi Sir 🇨🇭i have a question: do we need to memorise aluminium, lead, copper, tin
For AQA you only need to revise the metals I cover in this video.
Hey Sir! Guess who got an A in their B2 mock exam? 😄😄 Thank you so so much!! You've helped me so much! Thanks again!
Hey congratulations. I love hearing from students who find the videos useful. Keep working hard and good luck in your exams.
are you going to do physics and biolgy and when will they all be done
I'm starting Physics in April and all the videos for everything will be done by May 2018.
But May is far away. And I want to get it all done in this year not next year
PLease
do we not need to know about aluminium, lead, silver and gold in the reactivity series?
who's revising for their mocks on the coming monday
Sir,do magnesium and zinc seriosly dont react at the room temperature...as u have told in the vedio bt when we did the experiment in school it reacted...so what is the right answer sir...
At room temperature, neither magnesium nor zinc will react to any real degree (you might see the odd bubble but not much more).
what exam board are you videos for?
AQA but they also apply to Edexcel in many cases.
are you also going to be posting biology and physics videos on the 9-1 grades?
Yes, I'll be starting Physics in April.
Freesciencelessons
Have u got any videos on stents, pacemakers (helping the heart) - Biology, GCSE (9-1)?
Thanks, these videos help out a lot, specially now that the exams are coming up.
Sir we were told at school to memorise the reactivity series and most of the positive/negative ions as they won’t be on the data sheet. So should we memorise them or not?
Personally I don't think so. The exam questions will contain the information that you need, or can work out from the question.
Hullo:)
Does anyone know where I can find his "Displacement Reactions" episode?
Edit: Nvm, i found it:)
Hello sir please can u tell me what does C1 in chemistry mean and what to revise when I do past papers on in science chemistry because whenever I do them always C1 written what topics
Hi. Are you taking exams in 2017 or 2018?
Freesciencelessons I'm taking the 2018 exmas
Freesciencelessons 2018 exams
Freesciencelessons also will your revision cards for new spec help can I use them for 2018 exams
Ah right. Well the C1, C2 and C3 labels really apply to the old spec (finishing in 2017). For the 2018 exams, there will be two papers for each subject (paper 1 and paper 2) but they don't relate to the numbers in the 2017 exams. For past papers, personally at this stage I would not be looking for those. AQA have only released a specimen paper and there are no past papers as it's a new exam. I'll be releasing revision workbooks later in 2017 which will help you with lots of questions.
You’re great❤️
Thank you so much helps alot.

Will you ever make A level science videos?
I've already made a few but at the moment, I'm focussing on GCSE. However, they'll all be done by Easter 2018, then I'll focus on A level.
i love you
Hello, do we have to learn the sequence of reactivity servers for our exam??
I'm doing AQA and I thought I had to learn the periodic table. Do you mind clarifying that for me? Thanks
No you don't have to do that. You're given one in the exam.
Oh okay.
It was just that I didn't remember having one in mocks. But thanks for clarifying!
