I believe that was torture for her, since she was always a perfectionist and her voice was her life. And I also believe that this sudden change was due to emotional issues, as she had just ended a marriage, started changing her image, criticism everywhere. But it may have been for physiological reasons like vocal fatigue, her nodules may have started to grow and her voice to mature idk.

This song is really hard, has very connected phrases and is just about the main layer with her voice alone, so she has not much time to rest a bit between the phrases with another vocal layer as she has on other songs. I believe she was having a hard time since her voice was already starting to change to Butterfly Era tone and yet having to sing this very hard song that was just after Emotions and Forever which are two of the most impossible songs by her. Also, it may be a little bit tired too since it was the second to last date of the tour.
