  • This is one of the coolest, most random euro classics I've come across. I still don't know anything about it.

I had a 85 cs Quattro. Absolutely one of the best cars I've owned

this was my first car, i bought one in HS in 2000 for $750 with 185k miles and a broken odometer. It drove like a champ for another +100K miles and I sold it college for $1200 6 years later. I restored it and it was unstoppable in the snow. True classic.

+Paulo Brandao That's awesome. I didn't even know the 4000cs existed until I drove it, such a cool car

I owned an '87 4000CS Quattro in white when it was about 10 years old. Loved it. To this day it's my favorite car I ever owned. 2nd was my '95 90 CS Quattro. Locking center and rear differential. As you say, it was unstoppable in the snow. I used to get a mischievous grin on may face any time it snowed. ;-)

I had an 86’. In this exact same trim.
It had so many weird advances for its year. The shift light was a part of the vacuum timing advance system. There was much in it that would make its way into Audis for the following 20 years. From the central locking to the steel braided fuel lines.
Where it excelled however was the CS. This car had manual locking differentials and with both clicked in, 3 wheels had to move at the same speed. On snow it was not matched in basically tank like abilities until other slip locks and computer control differentials started to be made in …Humvees or trucks of the mid nineties like Toyota Tacoma in around 1998. It was unstoppable in 3 feet of snow. Conifer mountain road Co. 1997 knew me well.
( talking of advances, if you looked at the fuse box of that very car you’d find the fuse removed for the voice synthesis unit that allowed the car to let you know of any warning lights that might be on or engine problems over the stereo in a woman’s voice speaking german, the car could talk….in 1986!!)

I had one in early 03 for 1900$...50k OG miles... beautiful mint car...even came with 2 extra stock rims...I loved that car...

That car was the very much tamed down spawn of the group B Quattro rally cars. The 4000 Quattro it's self never participated in the series. The 4000 was also never sold with the turbocharged 5cyl. The car you are thinking of is the Audi Ur Quattro or Sport Quattro.

Or the Audi 5000 but that was a 10v turbo not the 20v

I tried to add the turbo to mine. You had to relocate the battery to the trunk.

You guys reviewed this car wrong. I bought one for almost nothing from a VW mechanic in Wisconsin. I sold it back to him running with 280k miles. This car belongs on snowmobile trails. The door handles would fall apart constantly. But...if you lock the center diff...you will roll past your friends who are stuck in their Wranglers in the same exact snow with road tires. It does not get stuck.

This is one beautiful car ! I absolutely love the 4000 and 5000 !
Seems like the previous owner, took care of this car really well. Oil changes every 5000km, and fixing anything that would come anything that would go wrong immediately. A bit of a paranoid car owner, where everything has to be perfect with the vehicle at all times, like me !

I owned this with leather interior. My 2010 Ford Fusion AWD was comparably equipped interior quality wise and was just as fun to drive.

    Yikes. Lots of mis-information here.
    It's a 5cyl.
The "famous" Audi Quattro that raced group B and Pike's Peak was a heavily modified version of the Audi Quattro, which is now called the UrQuattro. They both have quattro AWD. They both have 5cylinders. The Group B one was obviously heavily modified from the road car but the road version was a turbo 10v 5cyl (and in some cases 20v). Similar to this 5cyl, yes. Those UrQuattros are like $50K or more now.
No, making these into a "single turbski" car is not as easy as putting a 10V-T exhaust manifold and turbo on it. At all. The fuel and intake system, compression ratio, etc, etc, etc all make it much much easier to just swap a 10VT engine (which bolts up) instead of trying to turbo the NA motor. The 5000 sedan was available with the 10V Turbo motor and that's probably the best place to get one.

Miss my 84 4000s 5cyl Quattro. I had it when I was a young buck age 19. And I used to launch it all the time and blew the clutch. and it sat there for a while cuz I was a broke kid and eventually I sold it. Now I have a gt28 swapped b5 car.

It's a very unique car, probbly the only sedan with locking diff. That being said unless your on ice or a dirt track it's just a car that handles well. Yeah I do live in canada and it would be insane to pass people in the snow and do crazy drifts in fields, it just isn't fast enough to have fun and that's what driving to me is all about. I'm not one for big hp, I like hp to weight ratio like swaped V8s in E30's and vtec miniz and so forth but damn man somey needs to somebody needs to putt something special in one of these....it's like if a jeep were a sedan!!

I had an 81 4000s 5 + 5 for my first car, super rare since the only imported it that one year. it was rear ended 2 months after I bought it, totaled!! great car but fwd sucked, since they didn't offer it in 4wd.. I miss it! seeing this makes me sick since I live in st Louis county, and could have bought it.. just never know when and where you can find that European classic
