There were so many heroes that day. As the boat captain said "the best thing was that everyone was helping each other" My brigade commander was in the second tower hit, and he made it down to Fort Dix where our EOC (Emergency Operations Center) was spun up, and he said the same thing, that no matter what people say about New Yorkers, everyone was helping each other. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, and he knew that it would take everyone to help out, and it worked. God bless America!

I had NO IDEA this 9/11 boat rescue happened spontaneously by so many boats, small and larger ones, a lot of ferry boats, taxicab boats, and private owners. Terrified people were lined up along the edge of Manhattan, screaming for boats to rescue them. This is an amazing video and one that I NEVER heard about EVER! Manhattan is an island. All the bridges on and off Manhattan were closed. This is one amazing video. They rescued a half million people in nine hours. It looks like an armada in the river coming through the water to rescue the people, many of whom looked like zombies covered in gray soot.

"Explosively demolished?" If it was supposed to be demolished, don't you think that citizens would have been escorted out of the buildings? There is no need to be a know-it-all and correct other people about what "actually" happened. If it was true, whatever you were talking about, the news would have covered it more.
But if you couldn't tell, people spend their time on videos like these to remember and thank the brave people who were willing to risk their lives to save others. Honestly, I do not believe that you should be talking about whatever you were ranting about. Some people lost their lives trying to save others. Just be thankful for that. Do not try and correct other people about how 9/11 happened.

while you have a point about civil liberties, I'm not sure you can say the true heroes of 9/11 were the dead. Frankly, i would say any of those who risked their life to help people escape the Twin Towers before they fell count as the true heroes of the day. That, and it's not really helpful to say who is and who isn't a "true hero"- anyone who, when the Twin Towers were attacked, tried to help people escape alive (either from the Towers, or from Lower Manhattan due to the risk from the towers falling (I presume, anyway) count as heroes, and distinguishing between them does a disservice to those involved.

Think about what it took to get there. If you were a ferry boat, taxi boat, party boat, a billionaire's private yacht - and if you heard that radio call and headed towards Gunner's Island - think about what it took them to get there. Hundreds of government individuals and private individuals left the safe side of the city to head straight towards what to them must have looked like a hellscape scene straight out of Armageddon. They didn't know at that time if more planes were incoming. They didn't know if perhaps bombs would go off in Lower Manhattan. They didn't know if there were more buildings that were going to collapse and endanger their lives once they got there. They immediately headed straight into unknown horrors, without hesitation, because there was a chance to save strangers they had never met. The Coast Guard did not have to beg or ask twice. Think about what it took hundreds of average people to leave everything behind - and possibly look death straight in the face - to head towards a live terrorist scene to save people. This is how ordinary people become extraordinary. And these are the people - every day people like those around you who so selflessly put their lives at risk for strangers - that we should be celebrating.

My friend Cheryl who lives here in Georgia near me, her uncle worked at the world trade center. They couldn't get in touch with him for 2 days and then he finally called to say he actually woke up late for work for the first time in forever and was on a trolley headed towards the world trade center and saw the plane hit the first tower. He would have died if he hadn't woken up late that day because he worked on one of the upper floors.

I was there. It was a tragic time but it was amazing to see the unity and support for each other. We were Americans and we all STILL are Americans. People need to reprogram themselves and take all the political crap out of their heads used to divide us and make us fight amongst each other. Segregated classes of Americans repeated constantly by the media and politicans that we are just members of a micro-class labeled by: race, gender, economic status, sexual preference, political views, state of residence. We need to remember the most important class that unites us all- we are Americans and ignore those who want to fan the flames of divide. It's ok to be proud of our country and to be patriotic and have a feeling of being a proud nationalist. Almost every citizen of every country has national pride, it's ok..... thats why they live where they live

The Merchant Marine has gone unheralded in many endeavors. WW2 they were promised veterans status and only got in name only recently. Far to late to benefit those sailors of WW2. These guys on 911 did what was needed and then went back to work. You would be amazed at how vital all those small passenger boats, tug boats and everything else are to the port of NY/NJ.

It's a shame though, because so many people would have been reassured by this. I know I would have been. It would be nice to hear more about the real heroes that we have and have had in the past. I'm glad that this information is out now.

To those captains- corporate, official, and private- especially Vincent Ardolino: thank you, brothers, for going forward for your fellow men! May you and your families be blessed!

    How incredibly inspirational!
This could have (& should have) been a full 1-2 hour documentary.

I post this video on all my sites and all my media every year at the anniversary of 9/11. I watch it every couple months too. Every time it moves me to tears. I'm so damned proud of the people who stepped up that day. God Bless you all!
