My great uncle Vic Demumbren and his buddy George Whiteside fished the Ventura & Santa Clara from 1930s -1950s I saw pics that blew me away ! 24" Steelhead were not uncommon. 2-3,000 Ventura River in a good year ! It crashed due to Lake Casitas and the Los Robles Diversion Dam. Matilaja Dam needs 2 go now & when it's gone Los Robles &Casitas Water District Must let water flow thru 2 where it meets SanAntonio creek. That is the only way this great, hard fighting fish has a chance to recover! We as.part of the natural world need 2 reconnect with nature & save this species !
Hi Mark, this is an amazing story. I would like to know if I can follow up on this comment as I am in the research phase for creating a mini doc on the steelhead trout and Santa Clara River. What's the best email to contact you? Thank you.
All the work in the world will not help put non-existent water into that river. Ventura River should be restored first since Matilija Dam removal could make huge strides to returning Steelhead to that entire watershed.
Bradley visit the Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition on Facebook. We have a field day scheduled for October 7, and more details are available under the "Events" section.
I've been exploring the SCR at Oxnard with interest in native plants. Water is scarce with what appears to be mere ponds. In the ponds are very small fish. Are they steel head fry?

Very unlikely. The fries need cold and running water to survive. They unlikely survive in ponds.
In Oxnard it's mostly Carp which can grow pretty big in around McGrath campground.

What about Ventura River. Steelhead ?
Big job. But if industry kicks back a modicum of the profit they have made from the Land ( North America) big things could be done.
