Maybe your cords weren't long enough but I thought, in the middle of the boat would have been where I would have put it. Anyway, great video.

    i know its too late for this but here is an idea for charger. mount it into a waterproof toolbox or cooler . you can store the charging cord and anything else you need in it . on long trips you can take it with you on short trips you can leave it in you vehicle.

  • @OttoTheWeim
    @OttoTheWeim 2 года назад +1

    That battery pack isn’t liquid cooled so you may want to look into setting up some air cooling. You mounted that in essentially a thermally insulated box which will not allow it to cool very well reducing the life span and overall efficiency. The last thing you want is a fire on board.

  • @roderickrayrutledge2740

    A 330 watt 4'X6' solar panel mounted as a canopy will give you unlimited power. My friend has three mounted on his jon boat and gets over 1,000 watts of power! He gets 5mph all day long with only one deep cycle RV battery!

  • @robertkirchner7981
    @robertkirchner7981 2 года назад +1

    If they offered a longer power cable you could mount the battery farther forward, which might give you more speed due to better weight distribution, although you'd lose some power to increased resistance.

    This is sick… must be scary to dig into your boat like that! Major props! (Lol). I like how you talk about the issue of the battery power on electric motors. And your video got me thinking, is there some way to harness some solar to help the battery retain some of its life? My thought is by putting some panels on the tops of the lids in the stern, and maybe some area in the bow, or maybe even on the side panels of the boat, absorbing light reflection off the water. I think the biggest issue is battery size, and the consequences of the added weight. I think trying to make electric motors just as good as a gas motor is, it would benefit us greatly, by keeping more money in our pocket, and it could help to stop polluting lakes, and keeping fish population a bit healthier. I’m excited for the future man, thanks for helping to bring it!!!

    I was really glad to hear you talk about your feeling that the motor is simply too deep in the water and thus slowing you down. I have a Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 on my 15' pontoon and I'm getting the same speed you are. I'm convinced a jack plate will give me better speed!

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  2 года назад +2

      Having used the jack plate for a few months now I feel it's not giving me more speed. In fact I feel like the prop level is where it's supposed to be based on the shaft length requirements on the ePropulsion web site. For me I may need to move the battery further towards the front/middle of the boat and also try to lighten the overall weight of my boat. I plan to do an update video on this motor soon to give more details and feedback from using this motor.

      @@BassBrothersFishingDMV I was talking to a Torqeedo rep today and that was exactly his advice. Get the weight forward on the boat. Not really an option for me with a Pontoon as the batteries need to be where they are already.

    Nice motor. Be careful on Rocky Gorge/ Triadelphia- The hp limit on electrics was 3 hp, they may have changed that. I saw your video where you launched at Supplee and ran all the way up Rocky Gorge past the Rt.29 Bridge, it was impressive. When I ran a 24 volt MinnKota with 45 lbs of thrust, as long as it wasn't super windy I could make it up just past the 29 Bridge and back to the ramp at Scotts Cove. Had a lot of fun fishing the reservoirs, I had good days and i had bad days where the bass would or wouldn't cooperate. Keep posting your videos from your trips there, I watch them and it's like going home again.

  • @russm3866
    @russm3866 2 года назад +1

    Hey there 👋
    You mentioned you didn't like the way the motor sounds and drops down!
    Most types of motors with direct shaft drive are gonna act that way because the design works very much like a starter motor on your cars engine. The action, if you will, needs to engage and disengage with the vertical drive shaft so it can basically start or stop the request you asked it to do!
    Otherwise one of the gears at the top and bottom of the shaft will be stressed far too much and Fail or the vertical shaft will eventually warp or break!
    I hope my explanation helps you understand why that happens!
    In Order for the manufacturer to lower the noise and movement they'd need to add a few parts along with a different type of motor function which would drive the cost up considerably, and then your purchase will also have more parts to wear out or fail!
    My personal opinion is that the manufacturer has offered a product that is very quiet and quite Durable and Reliable with minimal downtime and repair costs to their customers!
    I've been involved in mechanical design and fabrication for over 30 years so I don't think I'm to far off with my description.
    If the manufacturer says something completely different, I'd be very happy if you would get in touch with me! My experience with that industry has also told me that you're only limiting your personal ability if you refuse to expand and open your mind every single day!
    Anyway, I've babbled on longer than I intended, but I truly hope I've helped you!
    Great Channel, Keep it up please! 👍 🙏

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  2 года назад

      Thanks for the info. I do plan to contact the manufacturer at some point to inquire why the motor rocks back and forth when going from forward to reverse. Other than that I've realized that the prop sits very low by design for a short shaft. Raising the motor up reduces the performance. I was expecting the electric motor design to function like a gas motor. I believe with the large prop require the shaft to be longer.

    If you would make battery pack with the same capacity as 4 12V 100 Ah lead acid batteries from Samsung 35E battery cells, the whole battery pack will weight only 40 pounds. 4 x 12 x 100Ah= 4800 Wh. So 4800/263Wh/kg= 18,25 kg= 40 pounds. So your battery would be 160 pounds lighter. Also runing that pack at 125A is no problem at all.

    • @drister007
      @drister007 2 года назад

      You would make 48V 28P battery pack. Runnging it at 125A would only drain 4,5A from one battery, and that is no problem (that battery cell is rated at 8A max continuous current).

    Hi there I'll be going on Liberty reservoir. I have been following you from other Boat builds Helping out your friends excellent job.. I have a buddy that live on Swan Creek on Potomac . I told him to check you out.. he just bought a John boat.. So as we was moving the weight around.. It was too much weight and the back so we put the gas tank in the middle.. the troller motor Up front.. And we did do a Jack plate. That helped.. The next thing is is to put the metal boxes on the back left and right.. That should give us more power and lower the front Bow You can get on plan and watch the waves better... that battery should be in the middle... For the reverse and Forward need to just put a metal Or rubber to reduce vibration To take up that Is 1" or 2" adjustment..

On days with favourable wind speed, your boat will possibly pickup a speed greater than the motor, and charge the battery at the same time. Just a thought.

      Not when I'm fishing but the front lifts up some when I'm running to boat at full speed. It's a pretty wide boat so the back sits very flat while I'm fishing.

    THX for the great video. Just curious about temperature control on the battery since it looks like it's stuffed in. I assume you have to allow for ventilation? Did you have to make some channels or have you noticed any heating issues?

    I was surprised that you installed battery in stern and not midships being 200lbs. Their short shaft was more than likely designed for v hull and not flat bottom. But I understand stern install could have been because of cable length. But definitely raise the motor. Think of solar charging for longer run time or even wind turbine.

      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  7 месяцев назад +1

      Great point. At the time it was my best option to install it at the rear of the boat. I do have plans to move it to the middle of the boat once I can get to it.

    1hr at top speed, 200lb battery, just not quite good enough market technology yet for this in my opinion but it’s definitely cool for small lakes and streams.

    Hi There. Great video. Sorry if you have said this in a previous video but how much do you think your boat weights without the motor and battery?

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  2 года назад

      Honestly I'm not sure. I have no issues with tipping or balance. The boat rides well and is super stable. If I had to do it over I would try using 1/16" angle aluminum and lighter sub floor sheeting to cut down on weight even more.

    This is a terrific setup. I am considering a build. I live southern Maryland and looking for a short range, quiet, easy to operate solution to crab, hunt and fish on my creek. Would love to see this boat in operation. This is a much better solution than running a gas engine, love it. Nice work. Do you think this could work for a Grizzly 1754 Jon? I wonder if that's too much boat for this power. I'm certainly not looking for speed, just a few miles of range and moderate speed.

    ive watched a few of these DIY electric boat motor setups. something i haven't heard discussed, and maybe i've missed it, is what are the safety features of the setup, considering the fact that water and electricty can be a bad combination. the battery panel and cabling don't look like they have much in the way of watertight connections etc. if you swamped the boat a smidge on a rough day and ended up with a few inches of water sloshing around in the back of the boat, what are the dangers with that ?

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  2 года назад

      The battery has a water resistance rating but it cannot be submerged in water.

    Nice set up. I love the fact it's quiet and pretty much no emission! I'm thinking to do something similar but maybe a little less expensive if possible. I don't have that many restrictions on gas engines but I love the quiet. I didn't like the Biden remark someone made. He's not the judgemental type but we know who really is.
