  • What is the difference between a B.A. and a B.S.? In this video, I not only explain the difference between the two degrees, but I also dive into some of the pros and cons of both. At the end of the video, I also explain why I chose to do a B.A. or a B.S. Both are incredible options and I hope I can help someone out!!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

so true about the prereqs! i know folks in stem/b.s. who get to their third year and are just starting to learn what their major entails, and can't fit classes into their schedule that fit their interest and feel trapped

Thank you so much for this video!
I'm a first gen. student and I don't really have anybody to talk to about this stuff. My counselors at school are very helpful but they can't always answer my anthro. questions. They try their best to provide resources for me or encourage me to do more research about my major / picking a transfer school... but I'm so scared to ask for help. Sometimes I don't even know what to ask!
I love all your videos. They're very insightful and they've helped me a lot while I try to figure out this whole college thing. I was initially going to do a BS in anthro because I thought it would be better in the long run - like help me find better jobs. But thanks to you, its helped me realize that that's not the case! I was crying picking out all the math and science pre-recs. You helped me realize that a BA is the best choice for me

I decided to do BA and BS both, BA in history and BS in mathematics. It's another thing that I dropped out. Now as I apply for readmission, University of Houston wants me to pick one major and finish, since I have taken forever. Listening to you, I definitely want to add Anthropology to what I want to study. I am only 71 years old. School is fun.

hi Alivia, thanks for the video! in your experience, what are the differences in job prospects between BS and BA degrees? I would guess that a BS is often more applicable to technical, potentially research fields in industry while a BA could be applied to communication or consulting or something along those lines. what do you think?

Hi, just found your channel. I'm still not sure if I want to choose between a BS or a BA in Psychology but your video did help me on where to look next, which I'm guessing is the specific courses they would give me in each. I don't like physics either and I would love to have a minor in creative writing, but I'm worried about what I would miss in BS if I chose BA, considering if I still love psychology while learning it in Uni, I'd probably go into something to do with abnormal psych and I'm not sure which would help me in that. I'm hoping you or anyone with advice will see this. Thank you for this video, though. It was very informative.

Hi! First of all, I am so glad to hear this video was able to help you in some respect. Choosing between a BA and a BS can feel like an incredibly big decision (been there haha) but honestly as I'm looking back on it, both are great options! If you are looking to go PreMed or something in STEM research, I would absolutely recommend the BS. Otherwise, if you are interested in other paths, a BA should serve you just as well. This is only my opinion but I have no doubt you will figure it out with time. Best of luck!

You 100% can do a BA in computer science. You need to do your research. Usually this contains the same core CS classes but doesn't require lab sciences and has less math requirements opening up more room for students to take humanities coursework.

Yes that's an option. That's the reason I clicked on the video because I'm not sure what is more convenient. My advisor was a bit confuse and said that BS requires 2 more years when transferring with an Associate of applied science and I don't know how true this will be

    • @first9299

@@huizylove speak to the chair of the CS program directly. Ask what the differences are between the BS and the BA. See how much overlaps(usually all or nearly all CS core) and what the differences in coursework are. Look at the course catalog for computer science courses at your college and decide what you want to take after the reading the descriptions and forming a degree plan in a spreadsheet to ensure you meet all requirements for graduation at your desired time(you dont want to end up realizing you will need to graduate later than expected at the last minute.) The chair will be be impressed if you make a semester by semester plan in excel or google sheets that lists course name and amount of credits per course.

Hi Sonia! I feel like because you like archaeology (and there are a lot of different paths to take with this major) it is truly up to you. Do you prefer STEM courses or Social Science courses? Both degrees should be great options regardless so my biggest recommendation is not putting too much pressure on yourself and this decision. I actually just released a video on Anthropology BA major requirements which goes through the expectations class by class. I know that is slightly more broad from archaeology but the video may be helpful. I also will be coming out with one about the BS on Sunday so maybe you can compare the two.
