Why is it limited to 2 monitors in clamshell mode? My 10yo MSi windows machine can connect to 4 monitors at 1080.. seems so cruddy

I am looking for a way to connect 3 external monitors to my 16" MacBook Pro with M3pro chip. I'm currently limited to 2 natively but I need a third. My issue is I want to continue connecting at least one of them natively so I have one that can never fail due to driver issues or have any issues with latency. So ideally I'd connect 1 to my native HDMI port, and 2 to a display link dock. Is this possible and what product is best for that?

That should be no problem to achieve.Typically, we'd ask for the monitor model and use cases, but we can give two quick recommendations to get you started:
UD-6950PDH (plugable.com/products/ud-6950pdh). There are a few important points to consider. I'll include them below.
The UD-6950PDH will connect to your MacBook using the included three foot long USB Type-C cable.
The UD-6950PDH provides the ability to connect up to two 4K @ 60Hz resolution displays to the dock's built-in DisplayPort and HDMI video output ports.
The UD-6950PDH includes 5x USB 3.0 (5Gbps), an SD/Micro SD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, and audio in and out ports. The UD-6950PDH will also supply up to 100w to the host system for charging.
You will need to install DisplayLink software (plugable.com/pages/displaylink) in order to use this dock. There are specific instructions for macOS found here: kb.plugable.com/questions/1185378 or kb.plugable.com/questions/1595423
      ---
UD-3900H (plugable.com/products/ud-3900H). There are a few important points to consider. I'll include them below.
The UD-3900H will connect to the MacBook using the included three foot long USB cable. Supports both USB 3.0 connection and USB-C.
The UD-3900H provides the ability to connect up to two 1920x1080 @ 60Hz resolution displays to the dock's built-in DVI and HDMI video output ports. We also include in the box with the dock a DVI to HDMI and DVI to VGA adapter.
The UD-3900H also provides six additional USB ports (two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0), a wired Ethernet network port, a 3.5mm analog audio output jack (for speakers or headphones) and a 3.5mm analog audio input jack (for a microphone).
A few important details about the UD-3900H and your setup:
      - The UD-3900H does NOT charge the host laptop. You will have to connect the power adapter included with your laptop to in order to charge the laptop while connected to the dock.
      - This dock uses the same software as mentioned above.

I think the link to the 3rd option (2 screen without a docking station) is incorrect. That is for the Windows PC only, not Mac. Please check?

Thanks! That product would also work with macOS, but we did update that link to our USBC-6950M!

Is there ANY way without adapter to leave MBA OPEN with internal display OFF to use MBA's INTERNAL Touch ID/keyboard/mouse with 2 external displays?
Any solutions to this using 3rd party software to "trick" MBA/MacOS ibto doing this?
Any chance Apple itself will update software to turn off MBA internal display while MBA open to allow this?

      Thank you for contacting Plugable!
While we have not tested these methods ourselves, there appear to be macOS terminal commands you can use to disable the internal laptop monitor.
Additionally, there are programs such as Lunar that may help, but again we have not tried these ourselves.
      Thank you!

If you're running macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later, both the M3 MacBook Air or M3 MacBook Pro can support dual displays with the laptop lid closed (i.e., clamshell mode). This link may be helpful to refer to: support.apple.com/en-us/117373

We're assuming you mean "being charged"? If so, then yes. We have a number of products that will add additional screens to the M3 series chip laptops and keep the device charged. If you want to know more, feel free to reach out to us at support@plugable.com
