Yeah, i asked this question too. Its not just that someone had their name as John, it's that John is canonically the character's name- hes the kid from the S1 box art and shows up in Smash too. (The other promo kids from the other two games have names too, i can tell you who they are if you like.) He has an incarnation in the manga as Goggles (hence the John V. Goggles post) but they're two seperate characters. John is usually seen with Kaori, the female counterpart and the "standard" orange Inkling who's now the Captain. John and Kaori seem to be evenly matched, since the Smash Ultimate reveal trailer has him dodge rolling with a Splattershot. But yeah, John is a canon character, hes just low-key. Cosplayers of the promo or manga characters sometimes show up in the plaza- i would know, I'm one of them.
Goggles has been a thing for a while. I remember seeing people with the goggles outfit name in splatoon 2. He’s some character. But I’ve never heard of John. Splatoon plaza posts have always been crazy. Don’t take it too seriously. It’s all just goofy fun.
