If you dig Paco's style, you will love Antonio Rey, Vicente Amigo, Cañizares or Rafael Cortés. Very rooted in flamenco music but all of them with loads of influence from other music, being an interesting mixture of sounds. For me, the best flamenco guitar players after Paco
One thing to mention is there is a massive difference between playing on steel acoustic strings vs. nylon strings. From experience, nylon are very easy on your fingers, and steel strings are very tough. It's mostly impossible to compare the two.
Some of them are lightning fast, but not pleasing to listen to, with muffled, muddy notes. It's putting speed way ahead of musical quality, which in my view defeats the mission. Tommy is the greatest of that generation, because he delivered quality with the speed. And they've all been surpassed by Marcin, in a league of his own. I guess the reason you didn't include Marcin is that when he plays just as fast as any of these guys, it's with absolutely perfect note clarity and tone, and bursting with feeling, and it sounds beautiful, and therefore isn't "shredding".
One young guitarist who is an INCREDIBLE acoustic player is Josh Meader. He plays solid body and hollow body electric, as well as acoustic. Josh has videos of himself playing both nylon string acoustic and the Fender Acoustisonic (which is partially electric but still also can be played completely acoustic), and those videos are all unbelievably good.
Im glad i knew pretty much all these guys. I remember years agoy dad got a cd for me and it was three of these guys together. I wasnt ready for it but as i got older i really appreciated it.
I saw three of them (McLaughlin, Di Meola and De Lucia) on the same stage...and they were just incredible. Matter of fact, I didn't play guitar for three months after seeing them...I couldn't help it, those guys were so good at what they did that it bordered perfection....what was the point of me playing after that? Tommy Emmanuel is good but he is not my cup of tea. I always get restless after watching him, he seems so nervous, twitching, playing, stopping, talking, showing off how great he is...I mean I am more of a listener of music when I go to a concert while Tommy Emmanuel likes to show off, that's not for me.
Not heard of Angelo Debarre, but watched a few videos and absolutely would have made the top 5, very similar to Joscho maybe a bit more aggressive on the shred style
A lot of so called musicians are obsessed with speed . It’s like who’s the fastest gun in the west type thing. If they paid more attention to the spaces in between the notes then the “music” can breathe! Tricks and more tricks . Where’s the beef? Loose the pick , you’re all cheating except Paco , Matteo Mancuso, and other flamenco dudes.
I don’t really think you can “cheat” at a subjective artform, but I agree that the obsession with speed can be very damaging. It’s the balance of everything that can help make/break music. For example, players like Allan Holdsworth can play some of the fastest passages ever, but still leave space for the music to breathe throughout the solo. In the same way I don’t want all guitar to be slow, I don’t want it to all be fast either. It’s the different kinds of dynamics within playing the guitar that make certain players so special
Artists 3 and 4 just seemed to be playing notes and didn’t follow the melody of the music IMO. Sub them out for Marcin and Mike Dawes or even Tim Henson.
This is the best "Top Five" list I've seen. I can't even entertain the thought of disagreeing with the choices.
Saw Paco De Lucia a few years before he passed away, he still had it 100%. What a monster he was.
What a bless , that’s a dream that never will be realized for me

Me too. Mind blowing.
Great list. That kid Marcin could probably hold his own with these greats.......

The two fastest I reckon I've ever seen on YT, acoustic- McLaughlin, electric-Shawn Lane
Bireli Lagrene should definitely be on this list...
Good shout, just watched a video of him playing Sunny with Joscho, will get a gypsy jazz top 5 on the list. Thanks for watching :)
I agree with your choice though the players have very different musical messages. But they are all masters of their instruments alike.
Some of them are lightning fast, but not pleasing to listen to, with muffled, muddy notes. It's putting speed way ahead of musical quality, which in my view defeats the mission. Wow, While I have long been familiar with the name Al DiMeola I never knew he was such a monster.
Yeah he's got some chops. Especially on those acoustic strings! Thanks for watching!
He was evidently a huge influence on the likes of EVH, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani
Scotty Anderson
Paco the goat.
Es una buena selección aunque desde mi punto de vista el guitarrista de jazz Angelo Debarre está en el Top 5
Not heard of Angelo Debarre, but watched a few videos and absolutely would have made the top 5, very similar to Joscho maybe a bit more aggressive on the shred style

Bernd steidl ?
Where's the GOAT? They're all great but Marcin easily surpasses them.
Bireli Lagrene, easy.
You forgot Tony Rice
Michael Paouris faster on acoustic guitar.
Only Tommy Emmanuel, number 1 in the world
Mike Dawes should be here, he's a beast
Indeed! Just casually playing solos on those string gauges, ouch!
Artists 3 and 4 just seemed to be playing notes and didn’t follow the melody of the music IMO. Sub them out for Marcin and Mike Dawes or even Tim Henson.
For several of these it should be "could shred" considering they are dead.
Doc Watson bluegrass badass
Got me riding in my chair like I'm riding a horse listening to Doc! Great! Thanks for watching!
