    Great to see you, Bob! I’ve tried a few Mech 15’s and always had issues with that weird mechanical keyboard skipping keypresses, so I was thrilled to see the new Mech 17 with cherry mx switches.
    I understand that a cost and weight-savings measure was taken with the numpad by making them membrane switches instead of cherry mx switches - if those membrane keys get replaced with cherry’s in the future I will immediately be sold.

    Welcome back, Bob!
    While liquid cooling isn't exactly a mobile setup for laptops, it can be nice to easily disconnect the liquid cooling and take the laptop on the go without it. I wouldn't mind the trade off of not having liquid cooling on the go for the mobility. On the whole, it would seem on face value that this would be a better DTR laptop than a mobile creator-editor station. Then again, liquid cooling is pretty awesome on a laptop. I don't think there are other non-ODM mainstream companies that offers something like this out there.
    Edit: I've had the R7 3700x equipped Thicc-15 (XMG Apex-15) for 2 years now and it's still running solid. It can be a bit loud and there are times I wished it had a liquid cooling option to keep the fans less noisy.
    As to the new Mech-17... It's just so strangely and ingeniously engineered that I can't help but *drool* at it! :D

    Bob I really have to give you props for being so honest and blunt with your information. Even though you work for Eluktronics being as forthcoming as you are just speaks volumes. THANK YOU. Don't change man.
    It kind of kills me that the intel version doesn't have the thunderbolt port connected to the dGPU. If I wanted to get one of these to use as a DTR I'd want to have it connected to an external thunderbolt 4 enclosure for all my extra peripherals. Webcam, Mic, two external displays, and keyboard. First world problem I know, but that would make it alot simpler to undock when it was time to take it on the road. If the AMD version ever got a new revision for USB 4 I'd think that was be the perfect mixture. One of these days someone is gonna make the perfect laptop. Just so close. . .🤣
    I do wish these were around when the Clevo x-170 was the best around. Because seem to be on another level.
    Glad to see you make a video again Bob. Take care!

    • @tabalugadragon3555
      @tabalugadragon3555 Год назад

      connecting to dGPU is best for performance, but connecting to iGPU is best for mobility. At least in case of my Dell laptop and my friend's MSI laptop, even after you disconnect the laptop from external screen, the Nvidia GPU keeps being active which horribly reduces battery life, so you either have to completely reboot the laptop(not an option of you have tons of apps open) or turn off the GPU manually via device manager, which is super annoying. No such problems when your monitor is connected to iGPU. you can just put it to hibernation mode and take it where you want, continuing your stuff without reboots or inconveniences.

I am thinking of getting one but I keep seeing people complaining about keystrokes not registering sometimes with the mechanical keyboard, that is a deal breaker for me. Is that still the case with the 2022 version? If yes, is the hinge design on the Prometheus VII pretty good because I've seen other laptops in the past with similar hinge designs and they don't last long. I would rather use a membrane keyboard on the Prometheus VII and my keystrokes registering but I'm scared of the hinge design on it.

    Goood to see a video from you again. I was wondering if you guys plan on trying to innovate with any newer designs for air cooling kinda like asus with there unique venting and dual screen solutions. Also just curious with all the power intel has why not allow it to have liquid cooling as well or is that an option. Eluktronics does make some awesome pcs but I’d love to see some different designs that help out with air cooling etc liquid metal and some other things I think would really help out with stuff.
    The liquid cooling on a laptop is definitely a game changer but it’s not really a moveable solution at this point it’s a desktop replacement which there are some that have had even more power than these in desktop replacement category.

  • @dreamcat4
    @dreamcat4 Год назад

    3 things from me (for the feedback)
    1) you really sold me on the external liquid cooling. before today i had previously written it off as a bit of a gimmik. and just not worth bothering with. however your short and concise demonstration with the audio levels really turned my head. as to how much more pleasant it could be. really well done and i hope you include that same clip in other future marketing materials. since pretty much the most annoying thing (for me) about a laptop is the noise under load and/or having to use headphones. so really i thank you for going to the extra effort there with that. i now know i want those ports in the back of the laptop!
    2) you guys (and tongfang or whomever else was involved here) really exceeded my hopes and expectations on both the keyboard and trackpad. being somebody who loved the execution of the macbook pro trackpad, the extra size of it being useful for multi finger gestures. and just having that extra sense of control. so i hope it does not get cut, or reduced back down (at east not too much). and especially i would assume that on a 16 inch version it would still be a pretty good and generous size. as for the keyboard, again i did not expect this to be so amazingly good. and really appreciate this new keyboard so awesome. in terms of the sound (althought i dont mind myself). indeed it could be possible to make it quieter at a future time. what was noticed by another independant laptop reviewer (not about your chassis, but about those same cherry low profile switches in other laptops). was that on 1 laptop there was a ringing sound because the keys bottomed out on the end of travel. onto the deck. so that would then ring on a full strike of the key. wheras on a different model of laptop there was no ringing. instead the keys bottomed out and it seemed either it was hitting a rubber gasket, or a rubberized or plasticy fim (i.e. cut sheet layer), or similar surface to absorb the hitting of the keycap and not ring out like an un-treated hard plastic or metal deck would. however this was also the reviewer assuming the sound was not coming from within the key switches themseves (ie browns vs reds). because they seemed 'confident' that there was only 1 and same exact cherry switches being used by both models of laptop. so maybe worth checking what is the deal there. since of course cannot change something making a sound inside of each individual switch itself. only if that part of the noises is happening outside. unless cherry will make a different variant of their switches. anyhow the current sound personally does not really bother me too much... just including here for completeness, and for others
    3) for the thunderbolt (or usb4) unfortunately i really want to be asking for something like this over on amd side. however i do have a more niche use case. actually my requirement is not too challenging technically, it is just that i really desperately want to connect my legacy pro audio interface to my laptop. and there is no substitute for it, the saffire pro 40 is a studio quality firewire audio interface. and it therefore requires a pci-e firewire controller on the host side, which must be a texas instruments pci-e x1 card. or (over in thunderbolt world) there are 2-3 thunderbolt docks or adapters which can convert firewire to thunderbolt. or for any other reasonable way to connect a pci-e x1 slot to the laptop which is not going to be too cumbersome or janky / dodgy connection. the thing is i know intel can do it already however the battery life is too much of a compromise vs the amd. and while ryzen might not support thunderbolt this generation i really am hoping that in the future amd chipset will be supporting the version of usb 4 standard that also includes passing pci-express lanes and pci-e hoplugging over that usb-c. i also would make use of displayport over usb-c too (should it be available). however my 1 critical application is firewire. as backwards as it sounds, they really just dont make them like they used to anymore! and it really is worth having, despite sounding like such a niche obsolete thing. it really is now become very well supported over on linux. so i hope amd can support this going forwards.
    4) bonus round: the extra ideas that came to me whilst writing this feedback.
    4a) it would be cool to thing about using some of the spare room for pluggable 'modules', like on the framework laptop. or (if not) then maybe a recessed usb-a port for receivers.
    4b) if you can please keep a revolving open door policy towards sharing technical information to help support open source developers for linux drivers. that does not mean you necessarily need to do anything specific that would burden extra drivers work or support costs. it just means a willing-ness to try and share what you can if needed / if requeted and there is somebody out there who wants to work on improvin the linux support. for those hardware i2c hardware apis that the control centre uses for all the features like the fan controls, the acpi, an the power or charging modes, etc. and whatever else might need help (for example backlit keyboard again tends to be via built in i2c interface). an hid device for trackpad gestures etc. it does not necessarily mean you can always help if those things are in turn provided by tongfang or other pre-existing closed source and proprietary agreements between vendors. as is often the case. it just depends whats possible under the specific circumstances and is just always a thing within the industry. but i guess my point or request here is to please try to remember to include it in conversations. or at least try to assess / determine what the impact or implications are for linux users / potential future linux support. i.e. being able to think ahead in that way might save a lot of extra work or headaches for some other linux person later on down the road. after everything has been fixed in hardware and products shipped etc. so maybe also trying to cultivate or develop a suitable advisory contact within the linux community could provide some value there. typically that is usually going to be one of a handful of existing small hardware vendors (probably like system76, but are otherwise located somewhere over here in europe). 'tux computer or something'. rings a bell. or perhaps others.
    and that is all of my comprehensive feedback! i could have asked some other types of tecnical questions like... what is the freesync mux like? and is there any way you can ask them (samsung or lg) to start manufacturing 1600p wqhd+ oled panels? (since they instead are making oled as 1440p, which is so out of touch). but i think i have gone on long enough. and those other questions just didnt seem quite as important here.
    hope you continue to make further progress working behind the scenes, we really appreciate it! and all of that hard work is really showing in these laptops. they are pretty amazing... and really seriously rivalling the asus or other big brands nowadays. so i look forwards to 3rd party reviews and comparisons really dont expect anything but praise here. hope the reviewers will see it too. i must say, it really made my day to see that trackpad and keyboard on that chassis. after so many months. and the mux switch you really worked hard on the g-sync, just a shame it wasnt certified in the end. still top marks for trying. really appreciated 👍

I wonder if the P-Cores at a reduced wattage will boost high enough to provide a better gaming experience than the full cpu at a reduced wattage. Thinking of testing this. Are they being sold at that price because it's overstock and they are making room for the 40 series or are they refurbs? Like for example the 16gb 1tb 12900h 3070 ti or 6900hx are only $1499 and $1599 which is nearly a $1000 less than their site. HK is useless if the BIOS is locked. All the voltage and multiplier tuning is "greyed out" on apps like XTU and throttlestop..... The only OEM that provides an "unlocked" BIOS is MSI. Otherwise you have to fuck with the BIOS yourself, ie: get a copy of it, find the hexadecimal lines that unlocks it etc, then flash it back in. It's extremely risky if you don't know what you're doing, and it's still a gigantic pain in the dick even if you've done it as every BIOS is different

      @@anthonyzheng7274 no he doesn't. I've seen users of the latest Eluctronics laptops being unable to use official software to undervolt on i7 12700h, because Intel locked it out. So no, unless Bob directly tells you that you can undervolt 12900h, you can't do that.
      Also notice that when he goes in detail of tunability he only talks about power limits and *GPU* undervolting. If CPU uv is available on their laptop and he wants to advertise it, why not mention that? Everything so far points at H CPU-s of 12-th gen being completely locked, so I don't think Eluctronics broke that rule here.
      P.S. Messing with power limits doesn't equal undervolting. As lowering voltage doesn't decrease performance, while lowering power limits does.
