Firstly, I feel like Cyborg REALLY needs a "Year One" comic. He's a dope character with a super tragic Origin.
Secondly, that Jay Garrick bit was freaking hilarious. I genuinely even forgot about the part where James goofed up and got the Flashs mixed up.
    Y'all always make my day.

Honestly when it comes to getting into comics my recommendation is to just go to your local library, see which comic looks most interesting to you and start from there.
Sometimes it's best to just go in blind.

Fully agree. Some of my favorite comics have come from this method. Plus, in a largely visual medium like comics you can often judge a book by its cover!

This is how I got into DC. Most comic stories are pretty simple and don't take long too understand unless you jump into the middle of some big event.

Remember that time Thanos was like, "I'm inevitable" and Iron Man was like, "Oh yeah, and I'm Jay Garrick. Look at my shiny tin hat, mate". Hmmm, good times.
Also, that one time Batman and Superman punched for a bit but stopped because Superman said, "Save Jay Garrick" and then they became mates. Even Gooder times. The goodest of times...

For The Flash, I'd recommend Geoff Johns' Flash: Rebirth from 2009. Barry Allen was pretty much dead in comics from 1986 to 2008, and this volume kind of covers his return and is a good broad strokes introduction to modern Barry Allen.

I tried for so long to pick a starting point for Batman. I finally decided I would make my own canon. I just read whatever sounds good. Stories I like are canon & happened in whatever order I like. Stories I don't like are ignored as elseworlds. Like a recent 5 or 6 issue run of THE MAIN BOOK that was a dream to NOWHERE! That was immediately out.

Interesting list. The main way to get into the DC universe I would say would be by two ways. FIrst, the JLA series by Grant Morrison but is consistently great including the Joe Kelly runs - which introduces people to loads of characters and more importantly you can see how each character contrasts against the others and how they fit in. Second, via Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns then the Dark Knight Strikes Again. DKR is great and i can't imagine any non comic reader not enjoying it. It does a great job of contrasting Superman against Batman too. DKSA introduces the rest of the League.
    Character by character:
Superman - good choices! I would've also added All Star Superman.
Green Lantern - Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night
Wonder Woman - the Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang run (just called 'Wonder Woman') is the best thing to happen to WW in decades
Flash - Flashpoint, Rebirth, the Francis Manapul run
Shazam - the Monster Society of Evil, Origins! (by Geoff Johns)
Justice League - any Alex Ross (Justice or Kingdom Come), the entire 'JLA' series, the New Frontier
Big crossover events are also great ways into the universe as again they introduce people to a lot of characters and often recap bits of the universe. Infinite Crisis is a good event, but all of the books involved in the Countdown to Infinite Crisis are also great especially the Omac Project, Day of Vengence, and post-Infinite Crisis series 52 including World War III.
(everything i have mentioned are graphic novels or have been collected into GNs)

    More good jumping on points
-Justice League Origin by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee
Literally designed to be an easy jumping on point for new comics readers and kicked off New 52 reboot. New 52 Superman is not great, but it’s a solid intro to most of the personalities. It also features the League going up against Darkseid if you’re wanting to gear up for the Snyder Justice League
-Superman/Batman by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness
A fun series that doesn’t require a ton of prior knowledge. Jeph Loeb always demonstrates a great understanding of character and the series has a fantastic Superman/Batman dynamic and dichotomy.
    -All Star Superman
It’s an elseworld story, but I’ve heard a lot of people say it was their introduction to Superman or that it turned time around if they didn’t like him before.
-Flash & Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold by Mark Waid and Tom Peyer
Fun 6 issue mini-series. Each issue is stand alone from memory and is an easy jumping on for both.
-The Green Lantern by Grant Morrison
The problem with Green Lantern is that he has a long ongoing continuity. Unless you go for something totally standalone, it usually feels like you’re jumping in of the middle of a story. Green Lantern by Grant Morrison is a fresh start and is written like a police procedural in stance. Green Lantern Corps: Recharge or Green Lantern: Secret Origin (both written by Geoff Johns) are also decent picks. Green Lantern/Green Arrow: Hard Traveling Heroes is good, but can feel a bit dated at times.

I don’t know if there’s literally anyone reading the comments looking for a suggestion that is DC but also kind of niche and CUTE, but one of my favorite comics experiences was the then-new Blue Beetle series that introduced Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle (circa 2011, post-Infinite Crisis). Jaime is a teenager who got recruited by the Big-Time DC hero types for a one-time, never-again mission, because he accidentally got fused to a powerful, one of a kind artifact, the Scarab, and they didn’t really have any other alternative but to use him. So Batman in particular was like “you come, you do the thing, and I’m going to keep you out of the fray, you’ll be all right, try not to throw up, ‘kay?” But something unexplained happened and Jaime *disappeared.* From the perspective of the other heroes, he was just gone. He’s nowhere. And it’s awful but they have to go. From Jaime’s perspective, they were LEAVING HIM BEHIND IN SPACE AND NO ONE COULD SEE OR HEAR HIM. Then the Blue Beetle solo series picks up with Jaime crashing down to earth and learning that although no time has passed for him, a year has passed for his family, friends, and hometown - without him. I’ll admit it’s been a while since I’ve reread this series, so there might be some dated parts, but my memory is that Jaime is an earnest sweetheart way out of his depth. The Scarab, which begins to talk to him, is very charming and almost innocent for a hair-trigger super-powered killer suit of armor that wants to solve every problem with violence. And his family and friends are so silly and annoying, angry, loving, and real. Jaime’s never been as wonderful for me, taken out of his supporting cast. About the first 25 issues are so fun and also, on occasion, genuinely heart-breaking.
I guess the trades are really expensive on Amazon now, so... DC, niche, CUTE, and expensive. Sorry!!!
Birthright is beautiful. I keep having to rebuy it bc I loan it to friends and never get it back. Boo!
My personal comics gateway drug (as a 25 year old) was Nightwing stories, and I’m sad that I can’t think of a Dick Grayson arc that has EVERYTHING you’d want in a highly-rewarding, entry arc. I will say that there are three series of comics done in the art style of the Paul Dini BtAS series, and if any of those are lying around in the comic store’s stacks, they have some GREAT little character-driven Batman and Dick Grayson stories in those series. Because they’re modeled on the tv series, they’re designed to tell a complete, satisfying story in 1-2 issues, which is accessible AND rewarding. The animated series itself may not have steadily improved across seasons, but I think the corresponding comics series *did* get better and better over time.
BLUE SUIT. The Red Robin suit is neat, but I cannot with the red Nightwing suit. My memory is that the red suit was introduced at one of the first in a long series of moments where they decided that Dick Grayson should be miserable and want to disavow his identity. The red suit was like his “I DONT DESERVE TO BE MEEE ANYMOREEE” suit. You wanna do that story, you gotta be thoughtful about it, man, with a strong sense of direction. Makes me sad that the Bad Idea Arc suit had to turn into the Get Used to It I Guess suit. :o(

For Wonder Woman read George Perez's run and then read Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's new 52 run.
For Green Lantern just read Geoff Johns run please. PLEASE
For Cyborg you should read New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Then move onto the New 52 justice league which the movie kinda draws from for his role.
I would add Batman Zero Year from the New 52 (it's collected in two trades numbered Vols 4 and 5). Also Batman 21 that James was talking about is collected in a trade for that story arc titled "The Button".
I would also recommend that you all read the original comics for these characters. DC has done really good making them accessible in Vols divided across the silver age, golden age, etc. Also everything I've mentioned above is available in either a decent sized trade or in massive omnibuses.

    • @Gav_80085
      @Gav_80085 4 года назад

That's not a bad one to start with. You see all the main characters highlighted, and their pairing highlighted as they often die together/try to kill each other and you can go "huh...i didn't know the Flash and Green Lantern were such good buds..." for example. Its also a really good one to come back to after getting to know the universe more, it hits better when you get all the references and pairings. Geoff Johns' retcons are kinda beautiful. The way he can look at the holes in the DC continuity (in this case, why heroes keep dying and coming back all the time) and fill that hole (in this case, it was all part of Nekron's plan!), making a great story and the whole universe better as a whole.

The Long Halloween is a great story, but the artwork is atrocious.

    Hobbits live long, though.
After all, the eleventifirst birthday is at the beginning of the LOTR.

Yeah but that’s because the Ring extended his life. Like how Gollum was able to live for over 500 years when the ring was in his possession

The ring definitely affected him, but a hobbit's average lifespan is still 100 years. So, they're more long-lived than regular humans (as opposed to, say, the Dúnedain).

Great suggestions. Keep meaning to get Superman: Birthright. Waid's JLA: Year One perfectly captures all of the, at the time, canonical first members.
