They don't need to bring Grogu back to keep selling merchandise; people already love that character. They could fill that slot with a new character that expands the merchandise they could sell: new Mandolarian partner, new alien foundling to fill the whole in his heart, or even new Jedi recruits that become Grogu's classmates.

I think you're right. There's nothing wrong with having a masked character who is just voice acted, but the show needs to be written around that better than it was in S3.
It really, really felt like the Armorer was gonna sell out Bo Katan and her forces saying "they're not real Mandalorians, we've survived our own way, we don't need them knocking at our door, might as well sell them out to Gideon" which leads to Dinn being like "no they're alright actually these weird rules just divide us, that's it I'm not wearing the helmet".
This is more speculation on my part for sure, but even earlier elements could have been drawn on better than they were in my opinion, like it's weird to me that the Children of the Watch who are fundamentalists with these strict rules, don't care about the darksaber? One of them is literally a descendent of its creator, and that fact matters for one episode in a different show and never comes up again.
To me it feels like the show was building to a storyline where the Children of the Watch want to keep the darksaber for themselves, continue to hide away, venerating these old symbols of their culture, whilst Bo Katan is actively trying to reunite her people and retake the planet. That more naturally leads into Dinn needing to take a side, and then choosing hope and unity and gives the Darksaber without a fight to show that they're kinda past those rules that only hurt each other, or maybe Bo Katan though her experience as a warrior and leader out in the universe is actually able to beat Dinn in a fight for the Darksaber, whilst Paz Vizsla failed because he spent his life hiding away, showing that evolving makes you stronger.
Maybe they would have even waited the whole season before Dinn reunites with Grogu, only convincing Grogu to return by showing his face again after Dinn realises that it's more important to not let dumb rules keep you from your loved ones.

It's the benefit and curse of a completely new character. One thing that keeps my hopes high for Andor is that we all know the ending, the writers don't have to figure that out, they just got to get Andor to Rogue One. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to use Mando as a sort of setup show but it does kind of make it weaker. In a way he's better as a bounty hunter, where he just shows up in other shows as a guy to get you out of a bad situation.

In RotJ, it was going to be called Had Abadon, and the last third of the movie would have been set there instead of Endor. But this idea ended up being scrapped as Lucas felt it would be too implausible for the characters to be right in the heart of the empire. It should be more popular to get it through to Disney that good writing is what Star Wars needs, not endless cameos and callbacks. Also less reliance on the volume set. Real sets need to continue.

Still annoys me that at the end of season 2 it seems like he'd learned he didn't need to wear his helmet, like by that point he'd taken it off three times, the third time for no other reason than for Grogu to be able to see his face, like how Luke had removed Vader's helmet so they could see each other. And he'd met Boba Fett and Bo Katan and neither of them wore their helmets despite being Mandalorians. Like, I don't really know what wearing a helmet represented thematically, I think that one episode in season 1 implied it was about his inability to settle down and hang up his blasters, but come on, that's basically what he did at the end of season 3 but apparently keeping the helmet on is now super important again.

Thematically it signifies his loyalty to The Death Watch and The Way as he has always known that. Voluntarily taking off his helmet signifies his new loyalty to his adopted son - once to save Grogu and the other time to say goodbye. This divided loyalty and exposure to the wider Mandalorian culture character progression should have been the focus of season 3 as he has to decide between following Bo Katan to reclaim Mandalore or be redeemed and re-join The Death Watch.
Having Grogu return in season 3 and have him redeem himself within 2 episodes completely undercut that narrative. Wasted storytelling opportunity imo.

This season is a mishmash collection of side quests, tangentially related stories strung together by the thinnest plot contrivances culminating in a rushed reveal and resolution in the last 2 episodes.
Mando is a side character in his own show, everyone else lacked clear initiative or motivation, powers and abilities are inconsistent and changes based on what the story needs at that very second, for most of the season there was no tension because there was nothing at stake.
The sad thing is there's so much opportunity for great character interaction and storytelling. For example Bo Katan and The Armourer are the leaders of 2 factions that have widely different idea of what it manes to be Mandalorian, that's a gold mine of conflicting philosophy, motivation and action, and yet you can fit all their dialogue on a napkin. They just... agreed and joined forces super easy barely an inconvenience.
If you compare this season with S1E1, it's almost like a different show about a different character. If this is the vision they have for The Mandalorian going forward, I don't think I will bother continue watching.

The Mandalorian is the king of shows for wasting your time. With only 8 episodes some only being 30 minutes you'd think the plot would be concise and focused. But they had so many filler episodes meandering around. The quality has noticeably dropped as far as writing goes and even the volume sets are looking a bit off to me. It's looking cheaper than before.

I think even though it had 2 years it was limited by other shows also using the volume, kenobi and BoBF. You’d think that time would’ve been used for a tighter script but it’s pretty clear some changes happened with the script, like Mando in BoBF and ep3 being more like the leftovers of rangers of the new republic

Seems to me that all the SW shows are like that. They could be condensed into 3 episodes a season if they had any sense of pacing. At that point, they could just be one feature film a year instead of 6 minutes of shows and 24 minutes of credits for 8-10 episodes.

    • @LouSassol69er

@@null6634 the writing talent just isn't there. The writers don't know how to hold substance over a seasons worth of content. The talent is spread too thin across the barage of new shows and movies they plan to create for Marvel and Star wars. It's all quantity over quality for Disney these days.

I know it seems weird, but a hangup for me was how no one seemed to sweat at all during this season. Bo Katan is doing crazy stunts, running and sprinting all over the place, fighting - but every time she takes her helmet off her wig is perfectly in place. Does helmet hair not exist in this universe?
Also, when that one kid was captured by the Monster of the Week and then coughed back up into the nest - I'm sorry, but this kid should have been dunked in a gallon full of KY Jelly and then plopped into the nest. How was he perfectly dry?
I really got the sense that the majority of this series was filmed in a studio with a bunch of P.A.s holding fans and towels at the ready, lest a drop of sweat fall down Katee Sackhoff's forehead.
