  • California suffered torrential rains triggering mudslides with the already loose dirt from the massive Santa Barbara County fire (aka Thomas Fire) in December. One major damage was on the 101 freeway, causing a shutdown between Santa Barbara and Ventura.
With the shutdown of a vital freeway, civilians depended on Amtrak for transportation. This demand caused an overflow of passengers on the Surfliner. Surfliner was in need for extra power and help, and the northern branch, "The Capital Corridor" answers!
They leased two of their Dash-8 locomotives and passenger cars to add and assist to the Surfliner until the freeway re-opens. These locomotives are rare to see away from home and on the main line and had to be caught.
