- What in the holy hell is going on with Destiny 2? As an outsider, I, a being devoidofskill, know that Destiny 2 exists and has been insanely influential in the live service gaming space, but I lack the critical knowledge for what the game entails.
I first played the OG Destiny in 2014 on a playstation 4 that I then returned as I convinced my parents to let me build a computer instead. I played that original game for a few hours but remember nothing from it outside of some random interjections from the classic angry joe review.
My initial experience with Destiny 2 was fairly similiar. Forsaken was on sale so I picked it up but only put in a 1 or 2 hours on battle.net. It came to steam a few years later as a free to play title and I tried to pick it up once more, but didn’t continue with it any further as I was just not interested in another live service title at that time.
How, it is no longer 10 years later. We are here and the conclusion of the light and darkness saga arrives in just a few short months. In quite the paradox, I’ve heard both so much and so little about it, so I decided to pick up Destiny 2 and figure it out for myself.
Now, without any further ado, here is my Destiny 2 new player free to play experience.

How do you feel about Destiny 2 and this video?
Also, apologies as there are a couple of weird audio glitches that kept on occuring everytime I rendered the video. I decided to cut my losses since they are fairly minor anyway.
FYI - some huge parts of the story are in the DLCs or seasonal content that's not available any longer. Both Witchqueen and Lightfall campaigns have Legendary mode, so much harder. A lot of the difficult content is also in dungeons and raids - some of them should be available for free.
Some large parts of the story that intrigue you are available only through RUclips videos because of sunsetting. A lot of content creators start out by doing reaction videos to them. You may want to look into videos like "Forsaken Campaign Full Walkthrough No Commentary". If you want to dig further into the huuuuge amount of material, you can start by going to "My Name is Byf" videos - he is the designated Destiny lore master/daddy. There are also a bunch of lore books in the game under the Collections tab. There are more lore books on the Ishtar Collective website (which is a searchable collection of the lore books and flavor text from the game).
Note that exotic weapons and some armor pieces and legendary weapons have about a page of their own flavor text on them that you can see on the details tab. Sometimes that flavor text is connected to the weapon/armor piece, and sometimes it isn't.
as a long time Destiny vet I wish the new player experience was better, I wish you got more of a story like a mini-campaign instead of a couple of disjointed missions
That's what it felt like it was going for at the beginning with the Shaw story line. However, once I got to the tower, I would I agree, everything became quite disconnected.
Annoyingly there used to be a free story, which they later got rid off for "storage space"

I find it funny the first exotic new players get is of all things Tractor Cannon. Like in general its an uncommon raid weapon. Not a open world / strike weapon. I feel something simple like Travelers Chosen should have been the starting exotic. Just a pistol that will help with ability regen whilst players learn the game. Riskrunner being the other possible first exotic if you skip the tractor cannon is weird since it is really meant for Arc builds. It kinda forces your hand if you actually want to use it properly when players should be experimenting.
Yeah, I don't even think that would be too much of an issue if the game decided to explain how to use the weapons properly. At least they were pretty decent to use outside of the correct context they belonged in.

The reason Osiris was so solemn when Rohan said that "not all of us have lives to spare" is because his ghost was killed sometime ago meaning he is no longer a guardian and can't be revived when killed. Also because his ghost was one of his closest friends and it reminded him of her death.

Mara was presumed dead after Oryx destroyed her ship, Riven appeared as Mara to Uldren and convinced him to kill Cayde, Uldren didn't have a ghost, until he came back as Crow, and it was Cayde's body Zavala was touching
Thanks for all the clarifications. Riven appearing as Mara to Uldren in order to kill Cayde is wild, and only leads me to wonder at why this was the case. I am a little confused about how individuals have different powers. I take it then to mean that you can wield the Light without a ghost? Or did Uldren use a different Awoken space magic? These questions are more so just general questions I'm asking and not ones you have to answer. I'm just appreciative of the mysteries actually making me puzzle together pieces of information. @@devoidofskill until Uldren became Crow, he didn't really have any magic, and imagine ghosts as a portable traveler, and no problem, Destiny can be a bit wild when others are filling in the gap
The greatest scam Bungie pull is Free to play the game realistically is FREE TO TRY if you do not have the DLC with a store available so you buy items.

Did a quick research, Ir is like a title, in this case, due to every Ir we've met is a deathsinger, it's most likely that Ir is Deathsinger, Deathsingers, sing songs (shocking I know), and if they end, whoever hears it, dies
Interesting information. Was Navota also a deathsinger? If not, I don't think I've run into one quite yet.

If you were trying to do the nightfall on this reset (04/16/2024-04/23/2024) then the nightfall rotator is on the neomuna nightfall strike. That is most likely why you "couldn't finish" the new light quest. If you wait until 1pm CST this Tuesday the 23rd, the nightfall will change, and will most likely aalow you to finish the new light quest
Thanks for the information! The footage from this video is actually from month ago, and I already picked up the dlcs on sale so it shouldn't be an issue for me in the future. I do wish this fact was made a little bit more clear in game though.

@@devoidofskill the Shaw Han quest that ends in forced fast travel. 2 out of the three of them missed the prompt to fast travel and got stuck there for more than 15 minutes looking for an exit.
They all have low fps experience (I would say Call of Duty Recruit difficulty level experience and skill level) and yet they all agreed that it was too easy in the new light quest. Now that they have come along and even completed the legendary witch queen campaign, after much struggle, they wished the game was harder at first to teach them better. (They haven't played dark souls, but I imagine they wanted a souls-esque school of hard knocks difficulty at the start, to motivate them to get better later).
Ironically they Also got stuck on the nightfall quest as it is on Neomuna this week and they hadn't bought lightfall yet.
Lastly I will mention that they feel very disconnected from the story. They read through the timeline and they pointed out red war and forsaken and really wanted to play through the story, but I had to explain how and *why?* the story was removed. It really sucks to hear that content that has been removed was better than what is available now (at least in some ways) and they feel it as well.
There is more but these were 3 big ones that cane off the top of my head
@@TsukiKhodar Yeah, the game was really insistant about the fast travel pop-up when I played, so its weird that it could glitch out that badly. Thinking about it, I almost missed the finisher pop-up, and that would have been disasterous.
I was a little bit cautious about talking about how easy it was as while I'm not good, I do quite the number of hours in CS. It's good to know that even people with less experience in fps games found it easy at first. It definitely gives off the wrong first impression about how hard content can be in this game, as I have recently found out.
Yeah, even as I'm going on to experience the campaigns of the newer DLC's, the way you access them allows for a lot of flexability, but it is quite confusing for a pretty linear campaign. I have no idea how Bungie thought removing content from their game made any sense.

Deep sight was introduced in the Witch Queen expansion, which is possibly the best D2 expansion to date. It came out a year before Lightfall.
Yup, everyone has been reccomending me Witch Queen, so I can't wait to get there.
Misunderstanding when it comes to the Nightfall step of the New Light quest. You couldn't access the Nightfall playlist because the weekly featured nightfall required you to own a DLC. You are not locked out from completing the quest in general.

It does kinda suck that the New Light quest just spoils previous expansions, like Savathûn gaining the Light and stuff. It’s way better to actually play through the campaign itself.

The locked room with fast travel is a bug bungie has never fixed
As someone who started playing destiny 2 earlier this month and got the bundle free from epic game i have been enjoying the game, the storytelling is not the best for new player trying to explain everything important. into the light free content that's available is nice. One thing I did notice was that you didn't mention guardian rank at all it gives you fairly easy tasks to complete and turns harder with each rank up great video though. And just to mention this but i think you need to have the riskrunner unlocked before the first lightfall mission

Yup, despite its issues, the gameplay foundation itself is incredibly solid. It will take a few episodes to get to it, but yeah, the new Into the Light content along with the Onslaught mode is pretty neat.
You are right; I forgot to mention the Guardian Rank. Apparently, I completed some of the basic levels years ago, and so I was already at level 5. I looked at it, but I don't think there was anything relevant for me to do at that level just yet. This is a slight issue with not using a completely brand new account.
I did unlock the Riskrunner in this video. Some other comments managed to clear up the fact that Nightfalls rotate, so some weeks you can access them as a free to player and other weeks you can't.
I mean sure there are some grammatical errors, but when compared to the vast majority of other comments, your English is pretty good. I was able to understand all of your points and respond back to them, so it's clearly at a sufficient level. Thanks for watching!

I started playing destiny 2 for the first time since warmind a few weeks back, so far i have about 75 hours in the game since and I got no idea what I'm doing still, just accomplishing random things and working on guardian rank stuff. I just barely found out last night crafting is a thing and from what I understand I need to play through witch queen to unlock it?
Sounds about right. I didn't even know crafting was thing yet!
I think they lock you in the room at 13:37 so that you learn the fast travel mechanic. You'd be surprised how many people I have had to walk through it with.
Makes sense. I can't help but feel it could have been presented a little less abrputly though.

This could very well be true. I did technically play a session or 2 years ago, and apparently leveled up my guardian rank from back then but never reencountered it.
You can get free gear that’ll get you too 1810 and the stats aren’t bad. The quest is into the light
nightfall missions rotate every reset so you will be able to complete it ( probably next week)

Nightfall missions are not from the lightfall campane. I understand the confusing but they are basically a more difficult version of vanguard ops and are free as long as they are in rotation right now its a neomuna nightfall so wont be able to play it but if you come back after the 23rd it will be free

That ending made me realize just how stupid the nightfall being locked behind a DLC is, you just got unlucky and it was a DLC one that week vs others other weeks but the game doesn't tell you that or even hint at it, that's honestly kind of odd, also when you kept talking about the veil my only thought was "Yeah, just you wait" i don't want to spoil it, but it's somethin, that's for sure, great video Edit: i'm an idiot and didn't see when this was recorded.. and the videos after it, i had one job
That isn't a you problem at all. I still never figured out that the Nightfall's rotated in game and only got that information from the commenters, so its still kind of an issue that the game doesn't make that clear. Thanks for watching!

I refuse to touch the game til they get rid of, or at the very least reduce the amount of, fomo. New players deserve every single experience that older players experience. Also they need to bring back the red war and forsaken quests. New players will never get to feel the things i felt because it's no longer in the game. Sure they are slowly fixing things but these are fixes that were long overdue. Its desperation.
It would be great if Bungie could bring back all of the old content. It is a shame that new players can't experience the content, but the fact that people who paid for the DLC can't even access it as well is beyond wack. I
please spend time to explain more missions and shit its actually interesting to hear a new light describe this shit so articulately. talking about the gifts we get, the communication between characters, and my personal favorite, flavor text XD
I'm trying and its always a difficult balance to obtain. There's flavor text everywhere and that alone makes it more worthwhile to engage in.
I would read some lore just for interest in the story especially light falls which expands what we know about the travler
Things like neamuna were secret city that was though to be whipped out and they explain how they survived after the calapsed and nimbus is non-binary and Osiris lost his ghost which is why saint-14 is always worried for him

I know they went free during Christmas and I know I missed that. I wouldn't be surprised if I've missed out on them a few times. Quite unfortunate, but luckily I was still able to pick them up for prices much cheaper than their base price.

1. True. That is how RUclips works, as I have had to find out.
2. Technically, I was making this when Destiny 2 was at its lowest overall sentiment, which is what led me to try it out.
3. I completed what I would consider a reasonable amount of content and only stopped when I encountered something that I could not do as a free to play player.
4. I have actually continued to play Destiny 2, as that was always my plan. I agree, it is annoying when videos barely go into the content available in a game, but due to how much I have to complete, releasing 1 large video as a small channel is simply not viable.

The Lightfall campaign you played on Day 3 is the worst DLC to drop ever, in the destiny franchise, Like you said neomuna was supposed to be filled with life but there's nothing there, One of my favorite destinations is the dreaming city, Its filled with Secrets, You see NPCs here and there, The city also changes every week, Resulting in even more secrets and stuff to do. Bungie did say Neomuma would be similar to the dreaming city but its not even close.
The Dreaming City is a beautiful location, that's for sure. From what I experienced of Neomuna the colors all feel oddly muted but I haven't managed to explore it just yet.
I think everyone can agree that the current state of the new player experience is a mess. Bungie HAS started to patch this, making it easier for new players to get into later content, adding starting kits and some such. But it does still have a long way to go, I honestly think the only reason they are even doing anything is that the execs finally let go of the money reins and are letting the devs ACTUALLY steer the game now.
Still, you got it better than many newlights had it a few years back, my god what a nightmare it used to be, especially when you don't have a friend to guide you through the early game... =~='
(btw, the nightfall isn't Lightfall dependent, its just on a weekly rotator, it just happened to be a strike from Lightfall this week :v)

The reason Osiris is acting weird when he is told that not all of us have multiple lives is that in a previous season his ghost was killed by Savathun and he was abducted, put into a coma by her, and she impersonated him. So he HAD multiple lives, and this just reminds him that now he doesn't. There is a ton of story behind this, but it would be very hard to bring it across for a new player.
As far as the Veil - nobody really knows what that thing is. That was a huge failure of the Lightfall season and everyone was pissed about it. The entire Lightfall season is a cluster and useless. If you are going to continue playing, I suggest you start and play through Witchqueen before Lightfall on legendary mode - Witchqueen has a *much* better story (and comes before Lightfall).
That is indeed a pretty complex character detail that a new player would not pick up on. It makes me wonder why new players are even able to access this late stage content, rather than being streamlined a more understandable experience.
It's funny that the Veil is never properly explained. I mean it is a MacGuffin, but it would be useful to know what exactly its purpose is. I'm working through the campaigns in order, so I should be a little bit more up to speed by the time I get to the Lightfall campaign proper.
@@devoidofskill Some background is better than no background which is what we had for a long time for new players. There are probably a dozen hours of cutscenes alone that have been removed from the game. And you did find this hook intriguing, which is probably what they were going for. The D2 game is already huge - 100-150 GB. They are removing things to keep the game smaller and more contained.
Note that a lot of the story (like who Osiris is, his backstory, how he was replaced, what that meant, etc.) was in seasonal content or sunset DLC content, so it is completely missing from the game. The only way to experience it is to watch play-throughs captured on RUclips. Many things were a huge surprise or only hinted at for the longest time, so you kind-of got spoiled on that. E.g. we me Prince Uldren in D1 where he was an ass, killed him in D2 Forsaken, and then he was dead for quite a while. Eventually we got a 10-second cutscene telling us that a ghost brought him back to life. After which people hated his guts for killing Cayde, even though the resurrection process results in a mindwipe, so he was a brand new person who didn't know why people kept beating him up and killing him. And then there were a couple of seasons (so 6-months-ish) where he was around but wearing a mask and in hiding.
@@elimgarak1617 Oh, you know what, I hadn't ever even considered how much content gets created for seasons and then shelved. It's actually crazy to think about knowing that we're on season 23. You're right as in the game is already massive. I would think nowadays that's less of an issue, but I forgot that consoles still exist.
Missing out on the mysteries as they build up is just something that I already accepted for projects that span multiple years. However, it is a shame that most of the cutscenes aren't watchable in-game. Unfortunately, having to use RUclips does add an additional layer of seperation.
Wait someone who likes Gambit? Well you are a new light so you don't know the tragic tale of Gambit... Though if your more interested in the lore I would suggest looking into watching up on some of the lore-tubers like My name is Byf and Myelin Games (these two are the ones who sorta gave me a better idea about the lore of destiny though Myelin has sorta drifted away from destiny) and another youtuber named Evanf1997, he documented a *LOT* of destiny community history. Overall the game is pretty interesting but it also kinda sucks since the game does have it downfalls.
PvEvP is a pretty interesting concept for a game mode, and I didn't encounter any glaring issues with it tbh.
I am super interested in the lore, but right now I'm focused on experiencing the story through the game first. I'll definitely be checking out all the channels you mentioned at some point. Funnily enough, My name is Byf's newest video on why The Witness hates us has been stuck on my home screen the entire day. Bungie also released a new trailer, and it's been incredibly difficult to not click on either video.
The game is a lot more interesting than I thought, and I have to give it credit where it's due. I have no doubt that I'll run into even more issues with the game, but so far it has been more positive than negative, which is a good thing for me at the very least.

I feel sorry for the people who didn't experience everything from the beginning... especially if you played a bit of Destiny 1.
I do wish that I got into the game sooner, but it is what it is. There are both pros and cons to it. I may have missed ton of story events but at least I get to experience the updated content and gameplay. Although, tbh, the weird way content is handled is Bungies fault.

What parts would you say are "painfully ai"? I know that simply narrating the events of a video can be a bit bland stylistically, but it isn't like I invented a new format of video.

Show more personality in your voice over. It’ll make the structure feel less robotic. All that combined with the audio errors took away from the video.

@@talion4033 Thanks for this follow up. I plan on continuing the game, and thus wish to analyze the narrative that is presented to me. Just summarizing the event without much analysis is indeed an issue, but it is a little hard to have anything to say when you are just figuring out what is happening. The Witness rant stemmed from me trying to put together whatever symbolism Bungie is going for. It is a bit out of place, but I tried to make it a bit humorous as well.
My bladish voice over is definetely the biggest area I need to work on. Reading words of a screen and imparting emotion in to them is harder than I expected, but hopefully this is one of those things that will only get better over time as I continue to practice talking outloud.

Genuinely though, it’s nice to see new players trying to make sense of the story - as much of a mess it is. Tragic that the best parts aren’t even there for you anymore to experience so you’re kinda just left aimless and confused.
Personally I hate the witness as a concept. Since it was introduced the story has become so boring to me. I’d much rather have us face Xivu Arath and bring an end to the hive bloodline we’ve been battling since the beginning.
This game sucks, I haven’t touched destiny since destiny 1 on the ps3, this whole game has became a shitshow. All these confusing missions that make no sense, I wasted $20 on a goofy skin that I can’t refund. Everything about this game is just a scam, I hope bungie either learn their lesson and fix this game or their company can burn for all i care

I hate this game and am genuinely thinking of uninstalling and never looking back. The commuinity is dogwater; the playerbase is cringe... I hope bungie gets sued to the ground.
LMAO. Unfortunately, I don't see Bungie getting sued anytime soon. If this game is causing you enough of an emotional crisis, I would reccomend stepping away from it. On the brightside, you could be addicted to League instead.

Not only is the game not great for new players the community is completely bullshit. Unlike in d1 it is extremely unwelcoming. All the end game and mid game worth wile content is hate locked by players that live on the game and only play this game.

@@SullyBoi_ That is also true. When I initially recorded this footage, community sentiment seemed like it was at an all time low. I wouldn't be surprised if some of that still lingers even through all of the stuff Bungie has recently revealed.

I’m still baffled that they refuse to retool this atrocious series of missions still using unfinished assets and poorly constructed missions to try and entice new players, but tbf the game has been down the drain for some time. Escape while you can.
Yeah, the Learning Light section was the biggest disaster area. No idea what was happening there. I was interested in the game to continue playing it for now. Only time will tell how long I actually stick with it.
@@devoidofskill I wish you luck on your journey, if you want to get a jumpstart on the game click on the “into the light” tab on the main directory, head to the hall of champions, and the chest behind Shaxx has a bunch of high level gear. You should be able to jump into just about any activity from there, but onslaught is proving to be a great gamemode to get high powered weapons from.
The new player campaign is (very very very slowly) getting better. It makes more sense and is less buggy than it was a year ago.

Destiny 2 is just a boring game, Quests give you nothing, you'll spend 6-7 hours on getting exotic gear/ weapons that are decent and the majority of the time all the golden items are just locked away in your vault. The story/DLC missions are just a bunch of BACK N FORTH, 24/7 fighting the same enemy types for hours on end. I'll have some quests in the game where I have no idea where they are and spend extra hours on RUclips to know where to go. This is not new player-friendly at all, without RUclips or playing the old games or DLC, new players are lost. I spent hours on getting Lament Sword and I DON'T EVEN USE IT. You'll the same legendary skins/weapons from grams 24/7 before you see new loot. not worth playing and bad for mental health!
