I love that "probably." I think they've lost that in the modern version of the show, the Doctor's general somewhat eerie inhumanity. He looks human, but he's emphatically not -- and it's throwaway words like this that bring that home.

    • @MaxHP1
      @MaxHP1 Год назад +30

Out of the modern doctors, Capaldi I think captured that aspect of the character the best.

    • @L1z43vr
      @L1z43vr 10 месяцев назад +9

Nah, I think not. The Doctor's inhumanity might have worked on the early days, but at this point, he's been living with humanity for so long, he might as well be one. Hell, he was one on the events of Human Nature and Family of Blood. As much as people hate Clara, she was right when she said "you walk our earth, you breathe our air" to the Doctor. He walks like a human, speaks like a human, quacks like a human, he might as well be a human. He is more than an ordinary Time Lord not because of the Other or the Timeless Child bullshit, but because he's the most human out of all the Time Lords, something they'd never understand, seeing as they're too busy passively allowing threats like the Daleks and Cyberman around, and when they did try to erase them, they gave the job to their outcast.

City of Death got huge ratings, due to the fact that ITV was on strike and there was no programming being aired on that channel, only BBC1 and BBC2 were airing, and so attracted a much larger audience than the usual Doctor Who episodes of 1979. 14.5 million in fact was the average. 16.1 million watched the final part.

Tom Baker is just miles away the best actor in the scene. I don't mean to cast shade on the others, they're doing a fine job but they're kind of just stereotypical bad guys, plus Romana, and poor Duggan has no lines. Tom Baker just shines and twinkles his way through every line.

DOCTOR: I say, what a wonderful butler. He’s so violent! Hello. I’m the Doctor, that’s Romana, that’s Duggan. You must be the countess Scarlioni, and this is clearly a delightful Louis Quinze chair. May I sit in it? I say, haven’t they worn well. Thank you Hermann that’ll be all.
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Doctor, you’re being very pleasant with me.
DOCTOR: Well, I’m a very pleasant fellow
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: But I didn’t invite you here for social reasons.
DOCTOR: Well, I could see that the moment you didn’t ask me to have a dr- well I will have a drink now you come to mention it yes do come in everybody. Romana, you sit down over there. Duggan, now Duggan you sit.. there! Do sit down if you want to, count. All right… now, isn’t this nice?
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: The only reason you were brought here was to explain exactly why you stole my bracelet.
DOCTOR: Ah well, that’s my job. You see, I’m a thief. This is Romana, she’s my accomplice and this is Duggan. He’s a detective who’s been kind enough to catch me. That’s his job you see; our two lines of work dovetail beautifully.
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Very interesting. I was rather under the impression that Mr. Duggan was following me.
DOCTOR: Oh, you’re a beautiful woman, probably, and Duggan was trying to summon up the courage to ask you out to dinner, weren’t you Duggan?
    COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Who sent you?
    DOCTOR: Who sent me what?
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Doctor the more you try to convince me you’re a fool the more I’ll think otherwise. It would only be the work of a moment to have you killed.
    (ROMANA: Work?)
    COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Put it down.
ROMANA: It’s one of those puzzle boxes isn’t it?
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: Yes, it’s a very rare and precious Chinese puzzle box; you won’t be able to open it so put it down.
    ROMANA: Oh, look.
COUNT SCARLIONI: Yes, very pretty, isn’t it?
    ROMANA: Very, where’s it from?
COUNT SCARLIONI: From? It’s not from anywhere. It’s mine.
COUNTESS SCARLIONI: My dear, these are the people who stole it from me at the Louvre.
    DOCTOR: Hello there!
COUNT SCARLIONI: How very curious. Two thieves enter the Louvre gallery and come out with a bracelet. Couldn’t you think of something more interesting to steal?
DOCTOR: I just thought it was awfully pretty, terribly unusual design. Course, it would have been nicer to steal one of the pictures but I’ve tried that before. All sorts of alarms go off which disturbs the concentration.
COUNT SCARLIONI: Yes, it would. So you stole the bracelet simply because it’s pretty?
DOCTOR: Yes! Well, I think it is, don’t you?
    COUNT SCARLIONI: Yes.
COUNTESS SCARLIONI My dear, I don’t think he’s as stupid as he seems.
COUNT SCARLIONI: My dear, nobody could be as stupid as he seems.
    DOCTOR: Oh!
COUNT SCARLIONI: This interview is at an end.
DOCTOR: Good, well we’ll be off, perhaps a quick stagger up to ??????, perhaps a bite at ???????. What do you think Romana?
    ROMANA: ???????...
COUNT SCARLIONI: I think a rather better idea would be if Hermann were to lock you in the cellar. I should hate to lose contact with such fascinating people.
DOCTOR: Ah… Duggan what are you doing for heaven’s sake. That’s a Louis Quinze.
    DUGGAN: ??????????
DOCTOR: Just behave like a civilized guest. I do beg your pardon, Count.
    COUNT SCARLIONI: Thank you…
DOCTOR: Now Hermann if you’d just be kind enough to show us along to our cellar, we’d be terribly grateful, old chap.
