Two sentences you don't often hear next to each other..
"I don't know who Mary Magdalene was"
"I went to religious school"
But it makes total sense in the context of a man who just reads a script and has little to zero retention of what he's read. Of course he was chosen for the scripture readings in school. It's the best way to get someone who is not paying attention to participate.
To be fair, Mary Magdalene is a far bigger character in Catholicism than in most Protestant churches.
@@owenshebbeare2999 As Simon pointed out, the catholic church teaches a lot about Mary Magdalene as definitive fact that is not in the Bible. Kinda like how they do with Mary, Jesus's mother.
His stupidity is impressive
@@owenshebbeare2999 I went to school in a monastery, my teachers were mostly monks. Mary Magdalene was mentioned in passing a few times, and in slightly more detail during 1 or 2 lessons, in years. But in fairness to them they weren't harping on about the bible much, at least not to me, since I'm officially lutheran, not catholic like they all were. But anyway my point it that it varies, there is a huge amount of variation in what is focused on within catholic teaching, much more than in lutheran protestantism, at least that is my experience of it. As for her in protestantism, I do not recall her being mentioned at all except once very loosely referencing something related to catholicism.

Same. May coworkers gave me a funny look 🤣
One reason people cling to the idea is because when critics of Jesus were throwing insults at him, they never mentioned him being unmarried, which would have been an insult. He should have been married off at 20 years of age and the fact the crowd did not mention him being 30 and still unmarried can be seen as implying that he was married and most everyone knew it.
Also, and maybe Simon will mention it, I don’t know, a rabbi is always a married man. People in the Bible called him rabbi various times.
Very true. Also, He had rabbinic status, and an unmarried rabbi is not done ❤
@@baalzeebub4230 all correct and there's a reason she was hidden. She held the true path man couldn't corrupt and gain wealth and power from . So they only used the four apostles of the 12 that supported the romanized religious structure placing it between man and God.
Wow

The New Testament was written a long time after Jesus’s lifetime and written by people who believed in him so you have to be careful drawing too many conclusions from small details like this.

"The Nostic Ospels" was fucking hilarious, my dude. Thank you for that.
When I went to a religious primary school we used to do handshakes as the sign of peace along with saying”peace be with you” when we went to church but since we were young kids we had to turn it into a competition and we’d fully be reaching over people to shake as many hands as possible 😂
Lol, that's hilarious 😅🤣
My brother and I used to do this too and sometimes I would throw the whole thing by shaking our mom's hand about 4 times until she got irritated with us
@@TheItGirl113 Now THAT'S something I find familiar, resistance from within!! It can often turn into a joke by younger "believers" (ie those who are still sceptical because of their hormonal nature) or something to take the piss out of....especially in religiously based schools (my own experience of both Primary and Secondary schools run by clergy, I suspect to appease my maternal grandmother.... who was, despite this, frigging awesome and somehow understood my autistic nature and adapted to it!). It also sounds a bit like the Weasleys from the Harry Potter books :D😄
There’s a comic called Peepshow which is semi-autobiographical and he draws himself doing exactly this lol.
Sounds fun
I grew up Catholic and wanted to be a priest. I had the whole communion section memorized and everything. Then I learnt that women can't be priests and I was devastated. My mom was like "you could be a nun" but I didn't want to be a nun, I wanted to have a congregation and lead the community and nuns don't do that
go to the Episcopal church, it's very welcoming, similar practices, and women can be priests and bishops.
I was about to tell her the same thing. Many former Catholics in the Episcopal Church.
I’m an atheist and, even so, find Episcopalians mindset the best of the so-called Christians.
@@jonelfilipek7848 I’m more or less agnostic and yes. I agree. Check out Spong. Priest and writer in the episcopal church. Pretty controversial.
I doubt you missed out. Probably best thing that happened to you.
What I still find fascinating is that we, today, have a lot of "old fashioned names", yet some names, Mary being one of them, are just as common as they were a full 2,000 years ago.
Maria is just a variation of it and it might even be more common.
Simon's transparency is what gives me hope! My family is very religious. We work at getting rid of the toxic, self-harming aspects, but genuinely we're brought up to be of service to others. It is refreshing to see someone with genuine optimism and inquisitiveness. They are not incompatible with being religious. It doesn't have to be a dirty word. We need more freedom to be and think and question, and embrace those who don't believe the same things to join us. Lovely episode!!!
Uhhh...everyone already has that freedom, provided they are trapped within a religion that passively or actively restricts it. Also, religious faith doesn't question anything. It just supposes things then turns around without any actual answers and simply declares them to be true...then promptly fails to question or investigate anything for eternity. So....
@@mastpg Bro lol where do you think we get our idea of freedom from?
Y'all tend to see religion, especially Christianity, as a totally evil entity with barely a redeeming factor to it. You realize that the Big Bang Theory came from a Catholic priest right? That some of the greatest works of art the world has ever seen is in service of the Christian God? That the very idea of human rights comes directly from Christians?
Growing up, my dad was a minister (Methodist). I somehow got all the way through Sunday school and confirmation without actually reading the Bible. I have some major issues with organized religion.. I’m definitely closer to Simon’s way of thinking than to the way my parents think.
Very well written episode Kevin! It’s honestly not something I ever thought about, but very interesting.
I felt the same way as a kid, I sensed on my very first church visit that something was not right about all of it.
There is always the belief from within. What is church but anonymous alcoholics for sinners. Getting together to support each other to stay on the righteous path, with an expert that knows the scripture and can give advice.
John 14:6 basically makes clear that you don't need a priest or a church or all that. If you truly believe in your heart and repent your sins and work to do right, all is good. Humans aren't perfect, but the path is what counts.
I'm nowhere near religious, but that moral part of righteousness always resonated to me.
Mary Magdalene was Jesus' female BFF, and she's my personal patron saint because I feel a connection with her. She's doesn't necessarily have the cleanest nose on the block, though she's basically a good person (like most of us). Whether she and Jesus were an item is less important to me than that she was very human and very close to him.
They only did hand stuff🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's between her and him, and since neither of them is trying to get into bed with me or my S.O. it's not my business!

I learn more about things by watching these videos and reading comments. Didn't know about all this other stuff around the Bible story.
Pretty Epic.
Dude, she also supposedly killed babies in the womb. She's kind of a Biblical myth, tho.... and more traditionally part of the Jewish Abrahamic Mythology VS Christian Abrahamic Mythology.
@@AutisticAthena correct. Very interesting lore around her. Including the myth of her being a succubus. I think it's a good idea for a deep dive into the legend.
@@The_SCPFoundation Yeah, there are some really interesting theories about the evolution of the Lillith character... I totally agree there. There's one that suggest that she's a carryover from an older, fertility based goddess religion that got vilified by the new Male deity worshippers. That she was originally invoked to protect the unborn child, but the Rabbis were set on demonizing all Gods but their "one true God", thus took a fertility Goddess, stripped her of her Deity status and cast her in a pejorative light.... other theories suggest that she's an amalgam of several older demonic figures that evolved into a single personified biblical character.... She's a very fascinating topic.

Thank you for the episode Simon & Kevin. The message at the end needs to be said more often: the past was vastly different in moral, social, and cultural values & beliefs. It is a mistake to look at it through the lens of modernity and dismiss it as merely wrong or backwards; it simply was, and separating historical fact from our own judgment can be difficult but should be done. That being said, the past really was fairly shit.
Anyway I appreciate the, uh, dispassionate approach to this topic. Far too often what little facts there are get sidelined by religious or even non-religious fervor making it difficult to find them through the miasmatic dogma of two millennia.
❤
Far too many people seem to forget this nowadays.... And seem to forget that in the future, our current time will seem barbaric and wrong to them as well.... I think it really just points at the arrogance we as humans tend to have and I wouldn't be surprised if the Romans or any other ancient civilization thought themselves more civilized than those that came before them, perhaps it's just natural to do that... But what gives us less of an excuse today, is that we have far more information at our disposal to be more open minded, at least the Romans had the excuse of being ignorant and not having much info available to them
The Jesus descendents thing is actually quite funny. Apparently he's far enough back in time that everyone alive today would be related to him in some way shape or form.
In a way yes but directly no, very few people are direct descendants of Jesus and Mary ,the rest of the world are if anything distantly related thanks to Charlemagne's 13 or so " bastards" ( medieval form of children conceived out of wedlock with someone other than his wife) I've spent 14 years of my lifetime researching the marriage between Mary and Jesus, I am one of the very few in direct descent of them. Of course no one would believe me though, I am direct descent through them not only through Charlemagne on my grandmother's line but also through the Sinclair ( my 19th great grandmother is Eleanor Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair who built Rosslyn Chapel) Plantagenets, de Bruce, Merovingians, Carolingian, Hastings, Sheltons ( my 15 the great grandmother was Lady Anne Boleyn Shelton Great aunt of Queen Elizabeth I) through both my paternal grandparents. My grandfather is the direct descendant of King Charles IV Stuart making me 9 the cousin of Queen Victoria and the 12 the cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Not saying these things to brag about my lineage only saying it's real. My family married each other of 1000s of years plus cousin to cousin making most of my family other than myself complete idiots from the excessive inbreeding. We are not rich, my ancestors on father's side was once upon a time but present day we are as poor as poor goes.
The assertion that if an ancestor is old enough, then a majority of the current population are their descendants.... is not mathematically sound.
I’m actually a Christian. But even I will tell you, no one bastardizes the Christian message quite like Christians.
Probably because there are so many different flavours of Christianity and none of them can agree on what the truth is. 😆
Thank you. There is a lot of emphasis on purported letters of someone who supposedly had some sort of spiritual awakening on the road to Damascas after ***years*** of persecuting the early leaders - the ones who actually followed him around.

Best adlib comment ever!!!!
That wasn't an adlib, it was in the script. You think Simon has any idea who Pantera is? Lol
I get tickled with those who argue about the infamous missing word. "He kissed her on her ????". Because it makes absolutely no difference where he kissed her. It makes a difference because wherever it was placed, that kiss signified that he held Mary in great esteem. She rated higher than all the 12, and they got pissed. So it doesn't matter where--lips, toes, bum, forehead, or back--that kiss landed.

I went to Catholic school too. I don't remember ever being taught that evolution wasn't real. It was more like "the Bible is a metaphor" and "7 days was 7 ages" sorta thing. It wasn't until I moved to the US that I met evolution deniers. I didn't think that was a real thing.
It's an evangelical thing, not a Catholic thing. When my grandmother past away a few years ago, our priest was straight up talking about how there is 100% other life somewhere out there in the universe during her mass. Which was fucking weird, giving the setting, but thanks for not denying science? lol
"This would be fine if it was fictional story, but when you're passing it off as history you shouldn't be doing this." Simon describing how religion has helped shape history for millennia. Were you TRYING to piss off multiple religions by discovering the truth? I'm in!
Me too. No problem.
I was "educated" at a Roman Catholic school between the ages of seven and 13 (up to 1965) and I can attest that Mary Magdalen's roll in the life of Jesus was certainly played down and that she was confused with other women in the gospels. My schoolmates and I, however, were often assured by the "brothers" (as we obliged to address them) that Jesus would have been an exceptional footballer.
Meanwhile, I was a practicing Anglican. I can't recall the clerics of my parish mentioning Mary Magdalen, but they seemed pretty confident that God was a member of the MCC.

Woah! Now that’s deep! 😂😂

Im far, far from being a perfect Christian, but I do love me some Jesus. I’ll never be the type to tell anyone else to repent or what eternity holds for them. It doesn’t even matter whether he’s a historically real person or not. If it’s just a story, it’s a damn inspiring and beautiful one.

I was taught that Mary Magdellan was the sex worker that was part of the whole "He who is without sin, cast the first stone" story.
They could switch her in with any female character not named in the bible.
I understand that the hooker part was added by Catholic priests.
Lotsa Marys.
Absolutely not. It was an error by Pope Gregory. Mary (or Martha?) of Magdala was a wealthy widow who financed Jesus' ministry. She was NOT the repentant sinner.
Jesus didn't had to pay to get nailed the romans did it for free
The story about your teacher introducing you to speech and drama was awesome. My mom was a director in community theater. So I grew up in that environment, but I didn't get into it myself until junior year of high school
What is more surprising that Simon saying he went to a religious school and doesn't know who Mary Magdalene is, is him saying he read Da Vinci Code and doesn't know who she is 😂

I'm reading a really good book called God: An Anatomy, by Francesca Stavrakopoulou, an atheist Bible scholar. It's REALLY good. I gave up being religious ages ago, so now reading about how he is an amalgum of a couple of Canaanite deities, after being borrowed from another culture, is really interesting historically.
Might I suggest “When God was a Woman” which discusses the Indo-European religions (which inspired the Abrahamic religions), and how they tried to wipe out the matrilineal goddess religions of the ancient world. Very fascinating!
Being “ religious” is what the cannanite deities will want from folks…. And Christianity a prayer of personal communication relationship is the key regardless of what an organized church will say or not say or what a RUclips video will stay or not say.. Feed the poor clothe, naked, visit the prisoner and the widows and that is done their contribution to soup kitchens and helping there when you can visit a nursing home even if it is just to read to another person or talk with them or if you have some form of entertainment, go in there for a half an hour, once a month and talk with the folks before hand, and after hand and if you can visit someone in prison, if you can get through the system and live One day at a time as peacefully as you can, and know that this is true religion in action, and not religion for the sake of religion. Those Canaanite deities won’t ask you that, but if you do these things you are doing the work of Jesus whether he was married to Mary Magdalene or not. It doesn’t change who he was but doing tge actions mentioned here ( not my lust but Jesus and James) will have you step outside of yourself and be closer to God than a lot of people. Don’t take this as lecturing I need to do more of this myself, but this is what the essence of true religion is.… best to you
I’ll look into this book, it sounds interesting
@@scotashton766 yeah but you be nice helpful person without needing a belief in a deity. And as archeology leads to showing the Bible isn’t telling how it really was, and that Yahweh was just another made up deity, you can definitely be a good person without believing in that deity.

I recently found my sixth great grandparents, Theodore and Lydia Bragdon. She didn’t have to change her last name 💀
F*ck me it got worse when I just went to look at how closely related they are bc their granddaughter, my fourth GGM married a man who’s maternal grandmother was also a Bragdon.
Theodore and Lydia were both born in 1778 in Durham and Freeport, Maine. Idk what’s even happening now I’m lost in records.
I feel like them both being born the same year at different places is a decent argument against them being siblings, at least. Doesn't rule out cousins or the like, but it's quite unlikely that two siblings that are not twins are born the same year as each other (and they can't be twins, because born at different places).
And if they are cousins, believe it or not from a genetic point of view that's not necessarily as bad as you might think. Sure, it isn't as good as two unrelated people, but it's vastly superior to siblings. And I believe once you get to about a second cousin, it's an almost negligible familial relationship in terms of genetic diversity. Is it still a bit creepy in modern times? Well, yeah, but... it's distant enough that most to all of the negative effects from inbreeding (i.e. the amplification of dangerous recessive traits) is largely mitigated.
Also, the fourth GGM is likely even less of an issue, as if the only relation is through the maternal grandmother, I believe by definition the closest they can be is second cousins (which, btw, marrying a second cousin is, if I recall correctly, legally allowed in every state of the US nowadays, for perspective). Again, theoretically a bit icky to think about, but also theoretically distant enough that it's entirely possible they didn't even realize the familial relationship if there was one (because all this assumes that there aren't simply two seperate Bragdon families living at about the same time in about the same geographic area)
Marrying your cousins was pretty common in the past.
@@ryanc473 yeah they definitely weren’t siblings, they had different fathers who I think may have been cousins but I somehow lost the record.

I’m guessing you didn’t get the half-hour ad for a church nine minutes in. I thought Sam was having a bit of fun until I realized it was an ad.
Well, for so long all we thought about with respect to Jesus was holy stuff. These days we're hearing about Saints Hanky and Panky. And how well endowed Jesus was. 13023
I definitely wasn't expecting this for DTU topic
If "pleasure" marriages existed, why is it impossible that MG was JC's pleasure wife who kept him company while he traveled around being all Messiah-y.
Oh hi Simon. You have covered the endogamous Middle-Eastern marriage customs nicely, but here is another factoid that multiplies the ICK exponentially. An uncle/niece match was considered especially auspicious, even more so than cousin marriage. However someone whose paternal ancestry was in doubt would not be considered a good match for an eligible cousin.
Now I know what's worse than stock footage. Religious stock footage.
I’ve thought of Christianity as a cult many times before, but I’s never considered Jesus and the apostles as a cult. Reshaping my whole view of that now thanks to this video. Now my image of Jesus is more like when Klaus starts that cult in umbrella academy.
the editor with the music is the best lol
I am a former Deacon for two different Baptist Churches (one I left due to personal reasons and the other closed) and a former Pastoral Assistant. Throughout my research, I have realized that what the Bible is is a collection of stories (most historical) that were gathered into one large book by certain religious men in a way that the entire Bible tells the story in a way that those men wanted. Any "books" that didn't tell their narrative were excluded and considered non-canonical. The Bible wasn't even allowed to be viewed by the masses but only by the Leaders of the Church. The people were kept illiterate for ages to be kept in line by The Church.
*Bows head for Dimebag*
Still miss you man... Vinny too...
The "nostic ospels" got me 😂
“…and the next word was TITS”…made me spit my drink out 😂😂
Simon's writer and I must be similar age. The White Zombie reference a few weeks ago now a Pantera one (rip dimebag & Vinnie) How about. Type O - one next (rip Petrus) 👍. Love the Easter eggs!!!🤘
Thanks! Until I researched this script, I had no idea it was probably where Pantera got their name from.
Ah man, I'm sorry Simon. I had to do the same crap growing up. Chapel ever Wednesday and Friday, I could literally flunk if I didn't memories a Bible verse 🥴🤣 shit was ridiculous. Yes I cheated on those tests because I didn't think that was fair.
I think we all owe Father John a thank you! I wonder if he watches Simon now 😂
I love the faces Simon makes in the thumbnails
I'm excited for this episode. But I'm not looking forward to our Simon snarking on about how much he knows better than every world religion and how he remembers nothing from his C of E education, but still reckons he has it all figured out. Crossing my fingers.
I love a good controversial episode 😍
Well written, well read, thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks guys.
This is one of the best ones yet.
Simon and Kevin, Great show as usual. The Agnostic papers are good for doing your research on this subject. But you need to combine the information with the Dead Sea Scrolls to fill in the missing pieces and to explain what the culture of the time was like to really complete the backstory of this story line. PBS produced a great anthropology documentary on the Dead Sea Scrolls way back in 2000. Keep up the good work!!
I love Kevin shows.
Thanks!
Secondary characters had me for some reason! 🤣🤣
I've just come across you 😂 I love you. You're very cleverly hilarious. Content pretty good, too. 👍
