Yup, you nailed it! I spent over 40 years learning and playing, my first 3 years I was a sponge and learned quickly by ear from albums and the radio and so in my early teens I was playing with much older popular local bands We would learn the newest releases and play then the same weekend often before the label released the LP, always filled the venues It was like being a rock star, just a great time of my life But in my off time I would breakdown every technique into a 6 hour schedule but always felt that I was missing something So sure I had all the licks and runs of the time but needed to spend more time improvising and so months of playing with tracks until I felt I should be writing my own songs That can be very time consuming but then when it was time to track solos my form had regressed not a great deal but enough for me to notice so back to the 6 hour program We try to serve too many masters What helped me was allocating 3 days a week for the 6 hour basics with metronome 2 days a week writing and improvising with other players, get out and meet other musicians! This is a big one And then put the instrument down to avoid burnout a day or two and compose in your head or on a instrument you don’t play well, get a kazoo, seriously I suck at piano but the basic chord structure and melodies make for some great song ideas
This is SUCH a good video, dude. I have struggled with the exact same things at this point in my career as well, so it's nice to have the catharsis that someone other than me has the same problem. Will definitely join the Patreon!
Brother! You are an incredible guitar player and more important a really great guy, self acceptance is one of the hardest thing ever. But we have to embrace this beautifull journey with all it's ups and downs.
I suck at practicing period but I can relate to when you say you have learned fancy stuff and then tryign some basic licks you skipped and they require more work to get right than something on the paper more advanced....
I found Petrucci's string skipping exercise for the right hand from Rock Discipline (over major chord, 2 notes per string starting with an upstroke) very efficient for the right hand. I think it helps a lot🤔
Sehr nice.
LG Hari
Once you get the technique down, it comes much faster. That said, everyone sucks at times. Whenever I have a bad day I realize I'm either too amped up or too stressed. Tension is the reason.
I see what your saying but the recent Eternity's End album destroys anything from the modern super clean Instagram guitarists. I appreciate the work that goes into sounding like a guitar pro midi file just don't understand why you'd want to. 😁 Also I really like the old school licks in Zen of Picking and Sweeping which I'm very slowly working through. Thanks for those.
You're right about all that I do the same thing I'm all over the place of what to practice and don't commit. Anyway, I wanted to apologize to you Euro shredders as I got a little plastered last night and I ranted on one of your video's. My apologies to you guys.

Great story, thank you for sharing this :))
Also the idea of splitting your practice routine to 3 and 2 intense days is a good one

Manche mehrfach... alles sehr geil.
Danke dir für den Support :)
