  • I thought it would be fun for us to explore a bit and ask the question we wouldn't usually entertain: what makes someone, given their worldviews and experiences, look at China in a way drastically different from mine? How did different cultural experiences influence this? Learning to think from different views has allowed me to look at the China debate with peace and clarity. Hope you enjoy!

I don’t feel I have to explain why I love China as a Chinese. I wouldn’t even use the word love, as it’s too emotional a word for my Chinese sensitivity. I believe the special bond between one and the place where one’s born and raised is universal for anyone from any country, be it China, the US, or any other country.
I feel this more strongly over the time as I grow up. Here are two particular things that evoke that bond of mine particularly strongly. It has nothing to do with ideology or even prosperity:
    1. There’s a two-thousand year old hydraulic project just an hour’s drive away from my city. The project turned this land that had been trodden with extreme floods and droughts into a food basket for the past empires. It is still working to this day-and no doubt it will for the next thousand years-and playing a vital role in irrigation, flood regulation, sediment control etc.
    2. All of us Chinese can read original ancient texts dating as far back 700+ BC, with relative ease, thanks to our largely pictorial writing system that has stood the test of time, even though the pronunciations for characters have varied. These writings transcend time and bring to us all the joys and sorrows, the hopes and aspirations, the visuals and the sounds, culminating in a shared sense of humanity with all these people from hundreds or thousands of years ago.

I think that is actually cool man. I think this is why we should really separate love for one’s homeland, which makes much sense and many people from different nations have, and love for one’s government. Those are very different things.

I feel the same too. I witnessed the poverty, saw how hard the Chinese people work even to this day, and feel so much joy that their lives have improved so much. Even with all the mistakes of the past, China would not have been able to achieve what they have achieved today if the CPC/government had not implemented the difficult land reforms, script reforms to increase literacy, and so on. I sincerely hope the new generation will always remember the hardships and hardwork of their parents and grandparents. We were always taught that it takes 5 minutes to eat a bowl of rice, but it takes months of sweat of a peasant to grow that bowl of rice!

Or the ones that have made a business of killing people for the organs? Or those that have created the Uighur concentration prison camps? The Chinese are not the CCP. but the CCP members are Chinese. I traveled to China 3 times back in the late nineties and early two thousands. I went to study Qigong. I am now a Qigong teacher. I fell in love with the country. I am a black woman grown up in America. But this was the first time in my life that I did not experience any racism at all. There was a lot of curiosity because at that time there were many whom had never seen a black person. But the Chinese people made me feel special for my difference. A lot of things have changed with development. Back then people were poorer. And there were more government restrictions... The thing that surprised me most was the diversity in culture from one place to another. Over time it seems that the opening of China to western culture has taken a wrong turn. Now there are incidents of prejudice towards black people that I did not see before. I feel that has been one of the unfortunate attitudes adopted from the west. But perhaps it is not as bad as it seems from some of the videos I have seen... However you remind me of the people I met when I was there. Wise and kind. I'm hoping that the relationship between our countries will have an opportunity to improve. Kathryn

about the "racism" you talk about, I actually have some opinions.
few chances are people mind are "corrupted" by "western" racism.
more chances are people act like "racism" but actually "discrimination" in another way.
if you know something more about China, you will know "regional discrimination" was popular in China during about 00s. this has something to do with the way Chinese think, its a kind of stereotype mostly comes of income level/ behavior and etc. in recent years, some black students and black people illegally stayed in Guangdong really made some big news in China.
discrimination is still wrong, but its really rare, I dont think its a big problem for black people who want to come to China. I actually have some black friends, and I often tell black people from the west to lower their guard a little about "racism" when they are in China, it will make both sides communicate more easily. and I notice black people who actually come from Africa have much less this kind of problem.

I know neither country wants to go to war over a small little Island and that's where the one China two systems diplomatic approach seems to have kept the peace for 50 years. But all it does is maintain the status quo until something changes that. How would you make China feel they were not humiliated by an independent Taiwan while leaving it alone to do it's own thing.

I traveled to Shanghai twice in 2004. A few things stood out to me:
As a part of a foreign delegation made up of artists, entertainers, politicians, and the business community from Hawai’i, we experienced great generosity and hospitality from our hosts everywhere we went. I liked the food overall. I was blown away by the sheer size of the place.
I was put off by the air quality and smell of the city, but I haven’t been to a big city where I didn’t feel similarly.
One of the more striking experiences I had was watching how people stared with zero shame at my classmate, who was a very attractive girl. We were both 18 at the time, and neither of us ethnically Chinese. She also wasn’t dressed conservatively, and I’m sure that was the bigger factor at play. Men of all ages would just stop and stare at her, sometimes just a few feet away. Needless to say, it made her very uncomfortable.
If I ever go back to visit China, I’d prefer to not be in a big city. I’d love to see the countryside.

Out of all the people who speak about China, you have been the one to provide the most useful insight on China.
For me my criticism of China mostly comes from western and alternative media coverage. I feel like most Americans actually don't have much of an opinion on China, but those that do typically have a negative view of the country. This comes from the fact that despite the rise of progressive politicians in the US, there is still a strong distain for any country that is a dictatorship or that is viewed as communist (I am not saying China is a communist country, but most Americans I have spoken to view it as such) I believe you can thank western media for this. With that said, I thought I knew a lot about China but this video has made me realize my own ignorance.
Seeing someone on RUclips who is able to provide what I think is a much needed prospective is a breath of fresh air on this platform.
Thanks for the great work and good quality videos. Keep it up.

You have to ask yourself why Americans do not disdain themselves and feel inferior for having descended from robbers, looters and plunderers? But, of course, Americans do not have the guts (I'd call it cowardice) to admit that USA was created from stolen lands, from slavery and from plunders. Would any criminal admit to being criminal? Worse still, criminals often believe that they are better than others and that's the mentality of Americans.

What I love about China is the imagination, intelligence, and art that I experience in their TV series, especially the beautiful mythologically based wuxia movies. They have changed a lot of my negative views about Chinese politics and shown me an idealistic, visionary side of Chinese culture that the West would do well to learn from. Maybe you could address the values of Chinese movie-making in some future podcast.

I guess the difference is just relative...we know our countries and what to expect ..but not sure about the others who speak different languages and have different habits .....so all distrust what they don´t know so well. It is simply human. And I agree with your observations ...we must be open and try to understand. Values may be different but maybe not that different ....Confucian values seems very universal and recognizable for somebody who comes from Europe.

I lost my work in an outsourced Ericsson factory run by American Flextronics. Do I blame China, Chinese companies or even Chinese government for this? NO. I put blame where it belong with the American and Swedish billionaires and with the Swedish politicians. Rather China saved both Ericsson at that time and later Volvo when our own politicians would not have lift a finger to do anything. Sadly I was not a part of the saved. Maybe I should have moved to China for a few years back than or Taiwan because that is the most happy I have been at a work. Streamlining the production line of one factory in Sweden and one in Shanghai at the same time and everyone trusting what I said because you can't argue with result. But we don't have that type of work in Sweden anymore. Had to go in to the advanced service work that is either travel or hospital. I hope all best for China but I harbour a little hope that we could get some electronic production work back before I am to old.
Fun fact I was the only one of my colleagues that gain weight in China. Loved the food, still do. And I can eat with Chop sticks in both hands if in a hurry. I don't think most Chinese can do that.

It was a fascinating time and it has been interesting to see from afar how China has developed since then. I obviously view China through the lens of the American experience. I always figured that as China grew more connected to the world economy and digital communications, its people would demand more civil liberties. I am an ethnic minority born on the border of China, and although I have been working and living abroad for many years, we have never forgotten from our childhood the spirit of "protecting the family and defending the country" that our fathers and elders of our own ethnic group have taught us.

I have watched a number of your videos, and generally interesting.
With regard to the manufacturing is moving from the USA to China, and with China playing fast and loose with intellectual property rights, this seems very reminiscent with the way the USA took manufacturing away from the British Empire in the late 19th to mid 20th century. It always looks different when you are an established player with everything to lose, and feeling protective of what you might lose; than when you are the new kid on the block with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Where there is a greater difference is when you compare President Trump to Xi Jinping. The two may have held similar job titles, but the actual power that comes with that job title is very different. There were numerous court cases brought before the courts regarding President Trump's immigration policy, which shows the limits of the power of the US President's Office. I would find it inconceivable that any court would be allowed to challenge any policy made by Xi Jinping. In the US or the UK, the system is bigger than the man, so we can have continuity of the system even as the faces at the top may change; yet in China it seems that the man is the system, and any challenge to the man is seen as a challenge to the system. This also is part of the reason why the Chinese system is seen as less transparent, because it is totally dependent upon the whims of the man at the top without any real visible curb on arbitrary power. I do accept that this is a simplification of a more complex reality, as changes in US Presidents do have an impact even if not as great as changes in Chinese leadership. Nonetheless, it is the greater authority and transparency of the rule of law between the Chinese judiciary and the US (or any European) judiciary that is a very important difference to the systems, far more so than simply going to the voting booths every few years.

On this topic I agree with you. It is not only about China. In 1990 I did an exchange student in the US and studied a lot about economics and indices differences between countries. Back then, Brazil had a higher GDP than China. Of course, afterward I marveled at how China was able to make right (but sometimes tough and cruel) choices in order to achieve its economic growth. Choices Brazil refused to make. Brazil wanted to be Europe on paper. Give rights to people it could not afford to give. Maintaining privileges at the expense of not reforming its economy. Taxing exorbitantly and providing little in return. To me it is clear that Brazil could have chosen the same way China did. Only it never had the political capital or the leadership willingness to do so.
When I think of the US and Europe, I reach the same conclusions. They could also have changed. But they chose to maintain a higher standard of living than was possible according to the new reality, instead of facing the facts, reducing the government, cutting costs, simplifying social rights, increasing productivity. I find it incredible how governments always find a way to remain bloated, tax progressively more and increase spending.

As a 3rd generation chinese diaspora in malaysia, we are often gaslighted in regards of our identity and loyalty.
Are u chinese or are u malaysian?
That is often the way the question is phrased, not only from non ethnically chinese people, but from some chinese themselves that operates outside of the sinosphere, whether by choice or by not speaking chinese language.
My answer is always the same. Malaysia is my home and my nationality, china is my culture and my civilisational identity. I am both.
China is not just a country, it is a spiritual home of the people identifying with the chinese civilisation. No one questions a jew's spiritual and emotional connection to jerusalem, or a muslim to mecca and medina. Why question the emotional connection of a Chinese to china?

Indonesia claims itself to be home to hundreds of ethnic groups, and to have unity in diversity. Identities are multifaceted, and everyone is free to be their ethnic identity like Moluccan or Sundanese, and their religious identity like Hindu or Muslim... Until it comes to Overseas Chinese. Then it becomes an interrogation session of either are you one of us or one of them?

It's not just big companies and technology transfer, but medium and smaller companies manufacturing something in China and then noticing identical copy of their product without labels is sold in ali express or similar venue and there is no way to do anything about it, as China doesn't care about issues that foreign companies might have, unless you are connected somehow. Legal arguments get stuck and take years to go anywhere and cost money. If the issue would happen the other way around, it would be relatively easy to take care of in most western countries' legal system.

I think it's not the people they hate, it's just the government's decisions and how they treat the people.
Most Chinese people I met are some of the kindest and more socially interactable people I've met in my life, although this goes for most Asian people I've met, overall I get along very well with Asian people we started their life in Asia, but then gained a little bit of individuality and know it's okay to form their own opinion, which they gained from their time in / with the west, it's really the best of both worlds.
The people shitting on each other are honestly missing out, once you've been to both sides and seen both stories, you know neither side is perfect.
A perfect example I think is that people in the west love to rag on Russia and China cause they're so authoritarian, but then here in the west, I consider myself in the middle on the political field, but because I don't agree with a lot of either side (the extremes) I'm considered an enemy by both and it's hard to make friends with either because any opinion they disagree with should be silenced, even make them lose their jobs, how is that any better than silencing voices in Russia or China? It's very hypocrite of western people.
In the end I just blame human beings, we're not perfect, always looking to feel better or justified, over time this only got worse, at least before it was the norm that people thought differently and everyone let each other do their own thing, but as time went on that's not just what governments do anymore but also society, it's sad cause what we got from ww2 was freedom in all forms for everyone, and now both sides, extreme left and extreme right, are silencing everybody, same in politics, always good to have a scapegoat, someone they can point the finger to or look better compared to.

As a Singaporean of the Chinese descent with distant relatives who are Chinese citizens. I have always been interested in Chinese history and got to know more about China in 2012 via this talk show on Phoenix Television called 倾倾百老汇,the show talked about a bit of Chinese history and current events in China in a comedy way, it was where I started to know more and gained interest in China. However, over the years how things progressed has been making me sad. In 2012, people are ok with critics in the country and see critics as a way to forward the country, but today the social media call these critics 反思怪,or people who cannot stand because they kneeled too long. As someone of the Chinese descent, I feel China as a growing threat where in the past when she employed 韬光养晦 policy, it feels like a friend where we can discuss our differences but today the country employed the wolf warrior policy, it remind me of the ancient Chinese dynasties where the country see itself as the centre of the world. Now the feelings that China gave is that you are all my vassal states, support my views or I will cancel you. Although she says that she will not interfere with the policies of other countries, it use its cancel culture to influence you. Also given that everything in China has to verify your identity, China is pushing the world away from her.

Stop lying about knowing Chinese culture lmao. Never came across any normal Chinese people thinking they are the Center of the world, nor do they like to stick their nose into other countries business to start wars like the US.
Speaking of critiques, you are a great example of why they don’t want to listen to criticisms anymore - it’s biased opinions disguised as criticisms, there’s absolutely no constructive criticism towards how they can improve in any aspect. The Chinese have always been hardworking and focused on their own business, recently they have enjoyed prosperity and they have a right to be proud of that. But never have they expressed wanting to rule the world, in fact it’s mostly western people fearing china overtaking them. When China was very seclusive, the west used opium to force open their trade doors. No that China wants to establish trading and political ties with others, suddenly it’s wanting to rule the world??

Good video, interesting points of view that I wasn't aware of!
I've met some chinese people, they seem really kind. I do need ways to get over the culture barrier, but hopefully I'll be able to and get to experience their culture for what it is.
Also, it's obvious that politically China is being targetted to seem out to be the bad guy. A lot of people I know simply accept this as a fact and don't question that perhaps China isn't that bad. In fact, from what you can hear of people visiting/living there, you can tell it's just different cultures clashing. China is more about working as a community for the country to thrive, while the west promotes individualism. Both are good approaches.

I think the major problem in your thinking is you are still trapped in the West and China binary. I suggest you truly spend substantial time to learn about the non-western non-Chinese parts of the world. You'll realize the world is much larger than the West and China combined. Then, come back and think about these issues vis-a-vis the West or China. Many things will make much more sense. You can then also jump out of the discourse framework of western or chinese politics.

I say this because I hear you repeat the rust-belt phenomenon and Trump a lot. It's not wrong, but it's too narrow. If you can only focus on either western phenomenon or chinese phenomenon, your horizon is still too limited. Think about ME. Southeast Asia. Africa. Latin America. Etc......

Simply put, highly generalised, and off the top of my head.
    The good:
The people (mostly good, like most places)
    The culture
    The history
    Economic prosperity
    The bad:
Minority and human rights (Xinjiang, Tibet, falun gong)
    Taiwan
Intellectual property theft and dishonorable business practices
    Institutional corruption
    Authoritarianism
    Fentanyl production
Foreign policy and global economic activity are a complicated and mixed bag (like most places), probably fair to say plenty of good and bad.

Unfortunately the thinking and experience of the world have been shaped by Western thoughts and way of life for so long (the past two hundred years), many people find it hard to accept the Chinese ways and civilisation especially the country is progressing in such a rapid way.
But the good news is it will change as time passes. It is changing in South East Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East. The world does not make of US, UK and Europe alone.

There simply needs to be more videos like yours from more authors. I just returned from Wuhan and while I was there I observed my own cognitive dissonance realigning to reality again. I took was taken by many waves of script planted in my head. I was bothered by men giving me a bit of hawk eye at first until I accepted how natural that is if he's carrying any implicit bias from national news. I want to plant more understanding of China in everyone I meet now, especially in America. I would enjoy vlogging in China, I would also like to highlight China's government for being results orientated and use technology to promote results based voting to America. I'm a guy from small town Minnesota , I like most Americans, have a unique story. I must like trying new places since I have 7 American cities under my belt and now I want to live in Wuhan even though I can only speak English? Just on this one tiny ( but huge ) point. There is English everywhere in the major cites. If you listen to Trump you would believe so many things, but why does his daughter speak Mandarin? Why is every American fixed in a social media silo? People, China is more your friend than ya know. If you live in America and don't look across the isle and street to your political opposite and talk to them about reality you won't wake up from the United States of Distraction and nver ever change a dam thing. I'm so sorry that the divisiveness of US thought always feels toxic and alienating. Freedom to rant my opinion, JOY! but not all.

You can love your country but hate your government. The CCP isn't China. It's the CCP - a government. Over 90% of the Chinese people do NOT belong to the CCP. One could even say the CCP represents the privileged people of China, not the vast majority. Perhaps that is why the CCP is afraid of its own people and spends far more on internal security than on the PLA. I think most people around the world love the country they grew up in - but that doesn't mean they aren't critical of their government or aspects of their country. The problem with CCP China is that you will get arrested for criticizing the government in public - this is wrong. One day I hope CCP China can become like democratic Taiwan, its more advanced brother.

Compared to other countries, what still surprises me after 15 years living in China, is how chinese nationals love to hear compliments about their country, how much this and how much that. I can see it as well in the comments you tag with a "love". I believe it reveals some sort of loneliness in this big world the CPC does not want you to join - it reveals a lack of confidence as well, probably coming from a sense of not being properly informed. Overall, it is sad to see so many excellent people around me lacking freedom.

Perception is relative. I enjoyed this piece and do believe that whenever one feels threatened the initial reaction, albeit uninformed, is to lash out. The West has this misconception that their interpretation of any diatribe is the moral high ground, however, we judge ourselves by our good intentions but are judged by our last worst act. Just completed a book called 'The last kings of Shanghai' and was disgusted by the palpable condescension. Any relations with China can be tenuous at best, but walk a mile in their shoes and understanding creeps into the algorithm. Why should China and by extension, the populace, not desire the same things as Western Society? Change is difficult but inevitable. In Canada, our relationship with the US is as fraught with perils like China's is with them. I've visited China several times and can understand some of their frustrations.

But having listened to what you say I think one grievance that isn't really addressed is that 'Sharing of technology' seems to be one way = to China's advantage.
To the West that equates to intellectual property theft through the guise of working together.
Like your best friend stealing you ideas for an exam - they benefit and you feel wronged, and that they never truly were your friend, and if you're wise you resolve to never make that mistake again, or your stupid thinking 'they'd never do that to me again - surely'

Dear Siming, I truly admire your goodwill heart and your willingnes to get everyone onboard the peacetrain, I am myself son of chinese migrants who left the country during the 2nd WW and settled in South america, Somehow, with huge efforts and sacrifices managed to raise properly me and my sisters, giving us apretty decent life and professional training. I was blessed to have worked for the UN for 45 years, and not only could visit China, in the 80's when it was begining to open up to the west, but have worked in many countries, including african , asian, and south american countries. Obviously, I over 70 , and am now retired, but there are a few huge issues that may be one of many reasons for so much misunderstanding. You are a very intelligent and you value much being a well educated person, which is consistan with Chinese culture, but not all cultures value knowledge. In fact, it doesn't matter if you know nothing as long as you have money. Well, true enough, not all chinese have being educated as a main value, but most, at least the ones I hace met, do so. Uneducated people are easy to manipulate because you will not have the intelectual tools to take good decisions and probably will have hard time to discriminate true from false. Governments, political parties, groups of interest, businessmen. enterprises, media and so many other groups use manipulation to their goals and interests. So in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is the king. Chinese govenment also manipulates it own people, just as British, French, American and all other governments do. Every one wants to rewrite reality to their own benefit. I guess to elaborate on this issue, could take me a week or more at least. Would love to exchange views with you, cause you are a highly intelligent girl and I'm very interested in your fresh and thougthful points of view. Take care of yourself and may happiness be with you,

So much trawling then killing and throwing out non desirable creatures really is unforgivable. Similarly, Siming…. Cutting, or Clear cutting forests and replanting one species must be rethought I think? Maybe just have pineapples growing everywhere in Hawaii? There must be a better way. Life was better before Monsanto I think, when science became some kind of financial prison. Then, to improve the world order, everyone needs to think about using less plastic, or making plastic biodegradable or something that doesn’t cause so much chaos. We all come from agrarian cultures essentially and we need to respect that. Having the farm connection is important everywhere and Mao having that understanding must have been very difficult for people to adjust to-when city people were forced to do farm work. But the perspective could be respected, I think? Nice earrings-by the way…
