One of my favorite Undertale Facts(tm) is that Spear of Justice was originally slightly more mellow, but Toby rewrote it because, and I quote, "It didn't sound enough like being heroically punched in the face."
My favorite thing about Toby with this game is that he never said "Good Enough" when making any part of it. He worked on everything until he was satisfied (or as satisfied as an artist can be).
My favorite bit of seeing people listen to the Undertale ost is their reaction to how unbelievably hard Toby goes on "Death Report" for no reason at all
@@thend4427 Yeah, listen to flowey's theme or any undertale song with that leitmotif and the fun song and you'll hear. There's probably youtube videos about it as well
What I especially love about Dummy! is how it musically represents the Mad Dummy's vocal tic of saying things three times, three times, THREE TIMES! The melody often repeats or 'stutters' in sets of three.
I like your take on papyrus being annoying because I think everyone thinks that about him but it’s always able to be overshadowed by his type of genuine child innocence
It almost feels like the soundtrack only *pretends* to be chiptune, only to break out whatever instrument it wants when it needs it. Seriously there's more variety in this OST than I've heard in my average radio station.
@@rompevuevitos222 It also uses some Final Fantasy soundfonts I believe, so that might explain why certain tracks sound or feel kinda' like FF8 or FF7 or smth, it literally straight up uses some instruments from those tracks.
I feel like in “home” when the guitar skips beats it’s almost like someone playing the song for the first time for their mom. It’s really heartwarming, and I think the beats between notes give it that feeling.
I had this thought too, and it makes me even more emotional about ** DELTARUNE SPOILERS ** . . . . . the version in Deltarune (You Can Always Come Home), beyond just the fact that it's bringing back a familiar and nostalgic track- the playing feels steadier, with more body, like it's reflecting the Asriel in this world actually living long enough to grow up and get better at it.
his comment on 1:29:40 fucked me up because i never thought about it that way, with the lead as a voice, but considering the fact that it sounds _very_ similar to mettatons text noise im absolutely obsessed with the idea hes scatting over his own track jazz singer style, thats so friggin fun dude ugh i love him
7:23 there’s always been something about fallen down that i admire, one of my mates described it as “hopelessly optimistic” and i’ve never heard a better description of it.
2:28:43 the fact that he said "uh oh, that's not good" shows how good Toby is at making the music feel the same as the game, and how good Marco is at understanding how it feels like
1:45:28 Small Shock destroys me every time. You can hear all of the regret and sense of heavy unwanted burden mixed with the extremely out of place awkwardness given the severity of that moment all condensed into two repeating notes.
Wow, I never thought about Waterfall representing a funeral march. It works because right before, you had a chance to kill Papyrus. So there’s multiple layers, it could be representing the history of loss the Underground has suffered, and continues to march forward through Undyne’s courage; and the flip-side is you just ended what was probably Snowdin’s brightest light, so the mourning would be very intense.
@@FlareDarkStormGem yeah, i hadn't watched the whole video yet. But if someone who hasn't reached this yet sees the comment that will spoil them so I still think it's good to keep a little quiet.
I also love it, but I never heard it as an alarm siren. To me it always instilled a really deep and profound sense of longing, like the audio representation of screaming at the sky in vain for something you want, and even though you knew it was coming, still feeling that pain in your chest when the only answer you get back is silence. Which really fits with the theme of the Waterfall area, where all the monsters are wishing to return to the surface. With the rest of the song really giving that funeral procession vibe, it really feels like the place where the monster's dreams go to die.
Playing Toby Fox games is like having a cool talented friend who sometimes shares something cool, funny, stupid, beautiful or sad with you. It was a great stream Especially funny to see how the Undertale community tries to not spoil stuff. Truly exotic for me
I especially love the subtle detail that the next song is called "Save the World" so when you combine the two titles you get the rather uplifting message "hopes and dreams save the world"
2:35:20 This piece is actually often regarded as Toby Fox's signature work - it's not specific to Undertale, and you can probably tell because it sounds different from every other track in the game. Ever since it first appeared in an EarthBound ROM hack, it's appeared in almost every game or piece of media he's worked on - even Homestuck has a rendition of it. It even appeared in an EarthBound fangame he didn't work on, but he gave them permission to do their own rendition. The only game he made that it hasn't appeared in is Deltarune, and that's probably because that game isn't finished yet. Anyway, apparently the story goes that in that ROM hack, Toby Fox wanted to use an existing track from another SNES game - Megalomania from Live A Live. However, he couldn't get it to work, and so he "belted out whatever" over the course of I think one or two nights? And created one of the most iconic pieces of video game music of all time. It already had a lot of notoriety in the EarthBound and Homestuck fandoms, but its appearance in Undertale is what made it as famous and recognizable to people as the Super Mario Bros theme.
I'm excited to see if he does something with it in Deltarune. A lot of people just think of it as The Sans Theme, but it's been given a few good coats of paint already and I'm excited for something new!
Thanks for sharing your experience! And good luck on your run! I remember back in the early days of RUclips, many of the Let’s Plays were prerecorded. Sometimes months in advance! I think we’re all looking forward to seeing how you handle it. 😉
Never played the game, but i did come across the 5th Anniversary Concert and it's one of my favorite soundtracks. The original is amazing(the 8-bit sound just hits different and i love it), but the arrangements for the orchestra are fantastic.
Do yourself a favor, shut yourself off from the world for 8 hours and play the damn game yourself. Don’t even finish reading this just do it, you only experience something like this *once*
Toby started off making music that included digital instruments from videos games in the SNES era. A lot of his tracks were included in fanmade rom hacks, which is how he built up his notoriety in the gaming community. A good few of the sounds from those games are present in Undertale. It's really interesting to see what the fanbase as a collective is capable of digging up about his compositions in that regard. Also, his experience in composing with the limitations inherent to those older games really shines through, bringing with it the kind of retro sound that oft isn't heard in the modern era. In truth, the entirety of Undertale's design reflects its creator's identity as a composer first and foremost rather than a game designer, which makes it very novel experience from both a literary and gameplay perspective as well. I highly recommend having a go at it if you enjoy the music. You won't regret it.
The stories behind all those songs are worth playing the game for, I know you probably have your reasons for not playing it, but you can just watch a silent playthrough! It's literally legendary.
The heartache is felt by toriel as another child is about to leave and likely die. And the determined attitude projected by the music is her determination to keep us here and keep us safe.
The one thing that make me disappointed in terms of the ost it that “So Cold” isn’t a song featured on the ost. Like the first time I heard that song my heart sunk and I was frozen in that battle for like ten minutes crying because of how broken and sad the music was. Otherwise, the Undertale ost is probably one of if not my favorite video game ost ever
Honestly, not including Mad Mew Mew's theme is also a big shame. It's understandable why it was never added, given how the Mad Mew Mew fight was exclusive to the switch version and came after the OST, but still, a shame there was never a version with it included.
This OST means the world to me. I honestly feel like it sums up everything about my generation of gamers in an OST, containing everything we need. Other people may think about an album by their favorite band that released when they were teenagers. I think of this OST made by someone in my generational cohort who grew up playing the same games as me and who wanted to bring everything he loved about what game music could do into one soundtrack. It blows my mind.
I agree very much. And for the generation immediately after, we have his friend's game's OST, Omori's. I recommend that game, btw. Earthbound truly set the road for some of gaming's absolute masterpieces.
Yes!! This game and this OST feel like such a representation of growing up playing and loving video games and their music, and how that love can grow, and what that love can become.
Aw man the fact you spoke about your dad after listening to that song. Knowing the context of the game scene. Absolutely gutting. I'm glad you shared your thoughts about your dad. Very touching.
The Undertale OST is an absolute Masterclass in the use of motifs. The way the same melodies come back in near-unrecognizable fashion…it’s like an Easter egg hunt to find them all!!
“The static is really interesting because it sounds like we’re going into different rooms” it’s because you ARE! I’m so glad he caught on to that, the “Your Best Nightmare” flowey fight is one of the best fights in the game in my opinion.
Belated comment since I missed the stream, so I will say this: Toby Fox approaches Soken levels in how he uses, integrates, and implements leitmotif. It's astonishing how well the entire OST works when you listen for the various themes given the limited tech at his disposal.
@@asaghcfgdfuyvhrghflowey9997 Good new for you: Deltarune is still rolling out, and Toby just dropped some new tracks on the website the day before this stream went live!
15:29 fun fact the ghost’s voice originated from the game Earthbound! Toby Fox is a big fan of the game and includes music inspiration from it. In this case the sample is from an Earthbound character named Venus, she’s the lead singer of a jazz/blues group 2:02:57 oh and is also an Earthbound sample, though both sample the opening of the Beach Boys song Deidre
It's amazing how Toby Fox alone managed to create such an amazing soundtrack through his own simple software. Everything that should hit you straight in the heart did hit, everything that should make you cry also succeeded. There's a few sounds that became the very definition of a lot of emotion I'm feeling in my life. Like.. when I feel down but think I should stay determined I hear music from Undertale and sometimes my brain just let me keep going just because it keeps on replaying the song in my head and I feel like "I can do it" thanks to this. I'm depressed so much and it's hard to keep on trying but this keeps me going. Music is really a balsam for the heart.
I still remember his tweet from like 7 years ago "My mom listens to my music when she cleans the house, which means my music is good". It's so nice uwu
Word. One of the very few OST that surprassed it needed 3 composers to pull it off. And that it's better is very much up to interpretation. What an amazing dev
Undertale's OST never disappoints. Your decision to stop livestreams of the game was the best one for reasons already pointed out by you and others, but it's nice that we still get to experience the soundtrack with you. Also, Happy early birthday!
The best part about Undertale's music is the entire thing *tells the story* along with the narrative. Every track is itself a piece of the narrative, and the narrative - and especially all of the characters - would not be remotely as impactful without it. I could go on forever on exactly how each track *informs* the story at the moment.
this is the best soundtrack reaction i’ve had the pleasure of watching so far. your voice is so perfectly inoffensive and it’s like your reactions are a companion to the soundtrack, not an interruption.
I just wanna say, this guy is an opera singer, right? One of the most classical types of music out there. And he really likes VGM. Just goes to show that there are some people out there who just don't like to open their mind. Love your reactions!
33:30 OMG I just realized when you said "Sounds like echolocation", that has a direct connection to an enemy you specifically get to fight in the place this music plays.
OOH POG! Undertale is sitting at the middle of my core memories... This game and the story and the soundtrack has a special place in my heart and I'm glad you are also hearing the amazing compositions made for this game.
this ost gives me so much nostalgia and I will never get tired of it. toby did such an amazing job with everything, dude's a genius. it's always cool to see other people listen to the music and enjoy it and experience it since i love it so much myself, have fun with the rest of your playthrough!
God I just love this game and its soundtrack there’s just something so honest and genuine about it. And of course from playing it there’s also the emotional value I actually have the collectors edition of this game and it comes with a cute little locket with a music box inside that plays ‚his theme‘ and it’s my favorite extra goodie out of all the collectors/special editions of games I have
What makes undertales soundtrack special is Toby’s masterful use of leitmotifs, and how each motif thematically ties together characters through themes. Hearing “his theme” in “undertale”, hearing “heartache” and “determination” in asgore, all of it just lines up so well.
@@MarcoMeatball Hey I just came back here and I noticed you were getting close to 100k subs and I just wanted to say, advanced congratulations man! I'm glad the algorithm finally picked your channel up, you really deserve this milestone and many more. Can't wait for the Hopes and Dreams video too!!
Yea, this game means the world to me, ever since I first found out about it 2 years ago. This was a delightful find, and It's great finding yet another new soul! I sincerely hope you enjoy your stay, and find continued pleasure throughout your journey!
I think it's safe to say that listening to this music beforehand will NOT dampen the emotional impact of things that happen when they play. I look forward to seeing how you react to the songs when you meet them!
I feel it is important to point out that both piano segments in "Last Goodbye" are Toby Fox playing a live piano, and he said that it was his self expression, his heart, in a tweet soon after the game released.
From the sound of it, you werent able to finish the game before hand and that's a shame, but Im so happy seeing you react to the OST. Defintely one of my big favs hands down!
Watching how you were listening the song named Undertale really got me. I mean, this song gets me every time I listen to it, but that time was special. I was crying, I was thinking about my whole journey of my life, of my parents, friends and relatives. And when you shared your emotions and feelings about your dad, it finished off me. I imagined that I, at some point, will lose someone of them. That's really terrible feeling and you have the same like almost the whole time after cancer diagnosis of your father. I feel really sorry about you and I hope that everything would be fine for you and you will overcome all the emotions. Thanks for the reaction, greetings from Ukraine.
1:55:21 I love the background tune going on here, that is super easy to miss before you realize its there but very noticeable after you hear it and has story implications.
when you started talking about your dad, i felt the tears well up in my own eyes. my dad is a conductor (ballet, symphonic, and opera) and he introduced me to the world of music. he’d always go on and on about his favourite composers and jump at any opportunity to take me to performances. he introduced me to pavarotti and popp, tchaikovsky and strauss, chopin and debussy, he loves it all and wanted to share it all with me. he is one of my best friends, and music started that friendship. i’m so sorry for your loss. i can’t even begin to imagine what that feels like. but music will always be here for you, as it has been there for me. love the content, love your character, (love your voice btw), and love what you’re doing. keep it up man
So happy to see you enjoying this soundtrack. ASGORE's theme it one of the most important in my life. It was part of the reason I did not drop out of college. Much love brother.
Determination really feels like it has eulogy vibes. I can just imagine a ruler to their people say "This journey is over for me. But don't let my goodbye be a sad one. Live, move on, do not despair! For there is still hope for the future."
Marco, if you liked hopes and dreams I recommend giving the band Anamanaguchi a listen, especially their early work (anything 2006-2012). Hopes and dreams was directly inspired by it. it even goes full circle as a while back Anamanaguchi even did their own cover of "hopes and dreams"
I'd highly recommend checking out the Deltarune OST (Chapters 1 & 2) if you enjoyed this, which it very much seems that you did. If no, completely understandable
May be late, but god i love people hearing the ost of one of my favorite games. When you get towards the end of the game, bergentrückung and asgore make so much more sense and adds so much weight to the music
mr meatball this video feels like a classical music station that will play a lovely little song and then someone with the most calming nice voice ever comes on to talk for a second while you drift off into thought and the next song comes on. thank you for this, you are very relaxing and nice to listen to
@@MarcoMeatball Hey marco, I came back here to say that you should watch the OST of The Binding Of Isaac and most of all, *The Binding of Isaac Antibirth* (The latter one is a mod, and the music makes a great difference like Terraria vs Terraria calamity). Give it a look man, you won't be disappointed and The antibirth Mod has great music and voices.
I've never noticed this about Home before. It really just does sound like the comfy sounds of someone who very clearly isn't perfect at it. But they don't need to be either, they just want to play for the people they care for. That feeling within music is very rarely captured from my experience.
His reaction to the intro to Hopes and Dreams is remarkably similar to mine, it's exactly like getting to the initial top of a rollercoaster or log flume and suddenly dropping in.
Man... Every single time I listen to "Undertale" when that piano hits, the tears just come out. I can't even control it, it's like some sort of primal reaction in me, I can't help it.
It's the same deal with me I literally couldn't play the game for a week because I couldn't contain my emotions After finishing the game, the first thing I said was "I'm to emotional for this game"
Thank you so much for making this i love an excuse to listen to the undertale soundtrack and im defenitly glad you're the one that reacted to it you made my day and i hope you keep making lovely videos like this.
This game has a handful of moments that made me cry like a little boy when I first experienced it. This made me remember those moments. Also, thanks for your insightful analyses of game music!
Wasn't there for it live, but this made my day, so great seeing someone listen to this goodness for the first time! What does eluding mean though, I've seen it mentioned in chat and I can't for the life of me find anything other than the standard definition.
Never played undertale, but damb I really liked that music my favorite was that creepy one that started on 1:50:40. NGL I got totally jump scared and I jumped out of my chair with that maniacal laughing 🤣. Had my headphones on at pretty high volume lol
Happy birthday, man, hope you're doing great. Love these takes of yours on how music steers you into certain feelings and mindsets (i mean, with a bit more nuance than just happy/sad song). Really looking forward to seeing you finish the playthrough, few games have evoked so much feelings.
Bangers right after another. I'm so glad this game exist. So glad Toby still creates more stuff. Thanks for this stream! Can't hecking waiting for the concert!
Something about Home just gives me the feeling of someone learning a piano piece, messing up in a couple of places but still continuing the piece despite that, and being helped along by another person who is keeping on pace with their own part.
At the very least, getting through the soundtrack really kind of highlights just how HARD it is to sit still when there's still so much to go. From a music standpoint imagine having a friend who only listens to one track from an album every few days, and just having to bite your cheeks, clench your fists, and try to hold back from telling them how hype the sixth track is, or the eighth! How important that melody is in the reprise before the last track of the album, it ties the whole thing together! Maybe this is the sort of effect you get when a musician makes a video game, it's agonizing as much as it empowers your own passion.
Absolutely beautiful stream! This might come in handy for the anniversary stream, but there are actually a bunch of songs from Undertale that aren't in the official OST release for various reasons (some were added in later ports, others have weird meta-reasons that are REALLY hard to explain, so on and so forth). I'll list a couple of the most important below (no spoilers, even in the names) in case you want to check them out after finishing the game. Especially before listening to DELTARUNE's soundtrack--there's some stuff there. -Mad Mew Mew -Gaster's Theme And on a similar topic, -Toby also remade MEGALOVANIA for Super Smash Bros., and it's...significantly better than the original in almost every regard, and definitely worth checking out in this context. -Finally, there's a short track called "STAR" that was pretty simply just unused, but is just...it makes you feel things. I dunno, just thought I'd throw that out there. Cheers, and happy (belated) birthday!!
Hey Marco I wanted to say thank you so much. Your section on your dad was heart wrenching. I just lost my mom this december and hearing your relate that song to you dad and how you feel about him really helped put to words exactly how Ive been feeling lately with her loss. Just in this one instance you helped me so much! Keep doing what your doing man! ❤️🤘
There were still some songs to be played, but wow, how beautiful to see someone who understands music reacting to something that marked my life. Only unfortunately I think I didn't understand some explanations well, since I'm Brazilian and I only saw it through the RUclips caption.
Fantastic reaction, loved seeing your analysis and I hope you didn't get spoiled too much, it really is a one of a kind experience. Can't wait for that Hopes and Dreams reaction and the orchestra!!
I never really thought about it until now with his reaction to the motifs/themes of Waterfall being in so many tracks (with some calls being wrong lol) but it made me realize the deeper meaning that theme has. *I'll be getting into Neutral/Pacifist Route Ending spoilers related to the Legend you read about throughout the Waterfall Section. This is your warning before ya read any further!* I like to think Waterfall sounds so sad because it holds the history of Undertale's past for all passersby to witness. From how monsters were sealed underground, to their plan leading up to how they'll try to escape and exact vengeance for every wrong that humans had brought down upon them and so forth. It's a very important story for all in the Underground to know by heart. Undyne's whole goal as a knight to the king, is to see that legend get passed so her people could be freed. So it makes sense that her theme is a more gallant version of Waterfall. When it plays in "An Ending" it pretty much solidifies the Neutral endings as another dead end, with the people being left wishing for the prophecy to be continued. Every track that has the leitmotif is set in areas of big importance of focus; With the monster's collective sights are set on seeing the barrier break so the monsters can escape to the surface finally. In "Respite" you can feel the relief in the track as everything comes together and everyone gets what they want, but there's still something sad about it. Like knowing that you can't really feel completely satisfied even though everyone is happy and well. TLDR; Waterfall's leitmotif has a bigger significance to the game's story than i originally realized after 7 years of loving this game and i love how deep it's depths could be.
I love how after listening to Undertale, and talking about a very emotional thing concerning his dad, the most goofy shift in music takes place with the song that might play when you fight sans.
Marco I wish you all success possible, hearing why the track "UNDERTALE" means a lot to you hit me hard in the feels, and I wish you all of luck! You are awesome, dude! 💙 Also happy birthday! :D
So someone wrote at the 2 hr mark roughly. That it was Toby playing piano. This is correct. But Toby not only made the game himself out of a challenge If he could take a prompt box language and turn it into a game which is madness enough and he succeded, he designed the characters (Temmi fleshed them out with art) the entire story plot, including a variety of endings and save file reprogramming, he composed the entire score to reflect on his own characters and plot. The game was released when he was 23, which means he wrote, composed an ost, had character art, reprogrammed a programming engine, and had the game in beta before he was 23. That is a level of actual genius I can't begin to comprehend. Also not only is the soundtrack rich and incredibly well done, there are tracks written in microtonal tuning. Age 23.
Labor of true love. Undertale is what you get when the Dev is making a game for the best reasons. Not these cash cow triple A titles we've been getting lately. Hollow shells disguised as a fun game.
@@olivia7782oh you should hear some of the stuff he was doing when he was a teenager during the height of homestuck. Somehow just as good, if a bit less refined sometimes.
@@SorchaSublime oh I know- I was actually a homestuck back in the day! I just didn't realize quite how young he was at the time. I'm pretty sure I even had him on my first crappy mp3 player, but I was so young then I just assumed everyone who worked on HS was some ambiguous distant adult age without really thinking about it.
Listening to UNDERTALE (The song not the entire soundtrack), I will never get tired of it. To me it's a comfort song, a song to tell me that "Everything will be ok" and not in a cheap way. The first half all the way to the flute (favorite part) just makes me cry so much, it's comforting in a way and the flute really helps with that. Then the second half just makes me feel better and happy, I'm still here, I'm still me, I can keep going with my life. And that very last bit of the song where that 1 instrument finishes it off is just beautiful, it's the song saying goodbye to you, to go and live your life.
I closed my eyes when the soundtrack Undertale came on. I cried like I always do, but this time felt more emotional than usual. Then you talked about your dad when it finished. I know why I cried a bit more than I normally do now. Undertale is a song that grabs at you deep. I feel like if strong emotion had a sound, it'd be this song. It sounds like hope, loss, love, war, light, dark all at the same time. I'm glad that this track is the one that shares its name with the game.
I've only recently come across your channel, but your love and appreciation for game music really resonates with me. Thank you for giving it the attention it deserves. I would love to see you react to Chris Christodoulou's work on Risk of Rain 1 and 2. The Risk of Rain OST's are just so powerful and emotional; I can't even pick favorite tracks to suggest. They would be great candidates for steams, I think you would really enjoy them. Keep up the good work!
@@MarcoMeatball He has album commentaries on his channel for each Risk of Rain album and listening to his breakdown of inspirations and ideas is fascinating. Worth a listen in your own time if you get a chance.
@@MarcoMeatball i didn't think anyone would suggest this but yeah, risk of rain 2 ost is powerful, havent heard risk of rain 1 OST apart from coalescence which almost made me cry, and i dont remember the last time i cried
i love the 1+2, +3+, 4+ series of eighth notes whenever it shows up. (emphasis on the 1, + of 2, and 4 +) it's such an energetic rhythm. along with it's counterpart, dotted quarter+dotted quarter+quarter. (4/4) that feeling of moving forward is so good
@@MarcoMeatball tbf, i havnt looked at the sheet music for this particular song. i just really love this rhythm. but my money is on 4/4 for this specific one
I'm glad the Undertale soundtrack made you feel something. Especially the song "Undertale", for me it's definitely the best track in the game, it's really emotional and always makes me cry. If you are playing, I hope you enjoy it, the game is just wonderful ♥
This just got recommended to me after watching several of your "non-gamers listen to video game music" videos (which I've been adoring btw!). I'm with you on the track "Undertale." I lost my mother, also to cancer, on Christmas night 2020, but that track will always remind me of her; like your father, she was one of many reasons I'm a musician now, albeit not professional. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for your genuine reactions and efforts to bring VG music to a wider audience. Much love.
I watched this entire thing, and I am so happy I did. I forgot how wonderful the music in this game is, and it just makes me want to play the game all over again.

One of my favorite Undertale Facts(tm) is that Spear of Justice was originally slightly more mellow, but Toby rewrote it because, and I quote, "It didn't sound enough like being heroically punched in the face."
thats so good
That's literally Undyne im dead, he really knows his characters 😭👍
My favorite thing about Toby with this game is that he never said "Good Enough" when making any part of it. He worked on everything until he was satisfied (or as satisfied as an artist can be).
This is also my favourite fun factoid about Undertale's music.

It almost feels like the soundtrack only *pretends* to be chiptune, only to break out whatever instrument it wants when it needs it.
Seriously there's more variety in this OST than I've heard in my average radio station.
It started with a MIDI format, using "instruments" from Cave Story and other sources
So Toby probably decided to hover around it
@@rompevuevitos222 It also uses some Final Fantasy soundfonts I believe, so that might explain why certain tracks sound or feel kinda' like FF8 or FF7 or smth, it literally straight up uses some instruments from those tracks.

100% accurate, I'm continually fascinated by what I hear in the track. It's something new every time!
2:28:43
the fact that he said "uh oh, that's not good" shows how good Toby is at making the music feel the same as the game, and how good Marco is at understanding how it feels like
1:45:28 Small Shock destroys me every time. You can hear all of the regret and sense of heavy unwanted burden mixed with the extremely out of place awkwardness given the severity of that moment all condensed into two repeating notes.
Absolutely the same thing here, toby fox is the only person who can make someone cry with only 4 cordes
Kindly, shuddup. No spoilers.

No one else ever mentions that little alarm-like string in waterfall, thank you for talking about it. It’s my favorite part of the piece.
Sure!
@@MilkyMayo I also always imagined it as a painful wail of anguish that you feel so strongly in your chest.
Playing Toby Fox games is like having a cool talented friend who sometimes shares something cool, funny, stupid, beautiful or sad with you.

Especially funny to see how the Undertale community tries to not spoil stuff. Truly exotic for me
Hopes and Dreams never fails to make me cry. It's truly the epitome of what music can do to move your heart.
I especially love the subtle detail that the next song is called "Save the World" so when you combine the two titles you get the rather uplifting message "hopes and dreams save the world"
I genuinly have that with so many of undertales themes to this day
i just realized that EVERY time i hear Home i get chills. The emotional weight it carries on top of how soothing it is makes it magical
Megalovania is definitely the more well known piece, but I think Undertale is probably his magnum opus.
i think the funniest thing about it is he made it by screaming into a microphone
@@amalgamousgoat6217 I hope he uses it for the titans/whatever the final boss is.
Ok hear me out, if Toby Fox puts Megalovania in everything he works on, there's a real chance that it can be featured in Pokémon

@@greenshinigami5566 If somenoe has not played it by now, they probably have a reason

It might be because it's just the Snowdin theme with a creepy filter over it
I always thought it was sad the creepier tracks were left out too

This OST means the world to me. I honestly feel like it sums up everything about my generation of gamers in an OST, containing everything we need. Other people may think about an album by their favorite band that released when they were teenagers. I think of this OST made by someone in my generational cohort who grew up playing the same games as me and who wanted to bring everything he loved about what game music could do into one soundtrack. “The static is really interesting because it sounds like we’re going into different rooms” it’s because you ARE! I’m so glad he caught on to that, the “Your Best Nightmare” flowey fight is one of the best fights in the game in my opinion.
Belated comment since I missed the stream, so I will say this:
Toby Fox approaches Soken levels in how he uses, integrates, and implements leitmotif. It's astonishing how well the entire OST works when you listen for the various themes given the limited tech at his disposal.

15:29 fun fact the ghost’s voice originated from the game Earthbound! Toby Fox is a big fan of the game and includes music inspiration from it. In this case the sample is from an Earthbound character named Venus, she’s the lead singer of a jazz/blues group
2:02:57 oh and is also an Earthbound sample, though both sample the opening of the Beach Boys song Deidre
It's amazing how Toby Fox alone managed to create such an amazing soundtrack through his own simple software. Everything that should hit you straight in the heart did hit, everything that should make you cry also succeeded. There's a few sounds that became the very definition of a lot of emotion I'm feeling in my life. The best part about Undertale's music is the entire thing *tells the story* along with the narrative. Every track is itself a piece of the narrative, and the narrative - and especially all of the characters - would not be remotely as impactful without it. I could go on forever on exactly how each track *informs* the story at the moment.

So happy to see you enjoying this soundtrack. ASGORE's theme it one of the most important in my life. It was part of the reason I did not drop out of college. Much love brother.
I honestly wouldn't mind watching another stream where you react to the rest of it once you have the context!
That’s a possibility!
Determination really feels like it has eulogy vibes. I can just imagine a ruler to their people say "This journey is over for me. But don't let my goodbye be a sad one. Live, move on, do not despair! For there is still hope for the future."
Same! But I still hate it cause I heard it too much 😒
Thanks recommended, always love to find reactions like these.
Thanks recommended!
The tone shift from Undertale to Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans oh my god
I’m so sad I missed this live! I seem to keep missing your streams! Thank god for the VODs! Keep up the amazing work Marco!
I'd highly recommend checking out the Deltarune OST (Chapters 1 & 2) if you enjoyed this, which it very much seems that you did. If no, completely understandable
He's reacted to BIG SHOT and Now's Your Chance to be A before. Not sure about the rest of the soundtracks
Up
May be late, but god i love people hearing the ost of one of my favorite games. When you get towards the end of the game, bergentrückung and asgore make so much more sense and adds so much weight to the music
U’re not as late as me ;-; don’t worry
I hope you have the loveliest of birthdays and I hope this has been good audible comfort for your journey into the future
😍😍😍
mr meatball this video feels like a classical music station that will play a lovely little song and then someone with the most calming nice voice ever comes on to talk for a second while you drift off into thought and the next song comes on. thank you for this, you are very relaxing and nice to listen to
Thank you! Glad you like it :)))))
It's been a long time since a youtube video made me smile, not for the undertale music but for you man, you're the goat here, new sub.
Thank you so much!
It's the same deal with me
I literally couldn't play the game for a week because I couldn't contain my emotions
After finishing the game, the first thing I said was "I'm to emotional for this game"
@@Firewarz217 Yup I 100% feel on this. There's just so much going on in this game.
Thank you so much for making this i love an excuse to listen to the undertale soundtrack and im defenitly glad you're the one that reacted to it
you made my day and i hope you keep making lovely videos like this.
Thank you!!!!
This game has a handful of moments that made me cry like a little boy when I first experienced it. This made me remember those moments. Also, thanks for your insightful analyses of game music!
You’re very welcome
Wasn't there for it live, but this made my day, so great seeing someone listen to this goodness for the first time! What does eluding mean though, I've seen it mentioned in chat and I can't for the life of me find anything other than the standard definition.
to escape someone to avoid to not be able to get a hold of. ; )
Never played undertale, but damb I really liked that music my favorite was that creepy one that started on 1:50:40. NGL I got totally jump scared and I jumped out of my chair with that maniacal laughing 🤣. Had my headphones on at pretty high volume lol
Lmao haven't even got there but I already know which song that is (your best nightmare)
Go play it then what are you doing with your life
@@El_Bella_111 buddy that is NOT how you pitch a game 😭
@@temutemacular Buddy Undertale's a masterpiece. Thats How You Pitch a Game 😭
It’s actually-
I’m not gonna spoil. Am I?
SPOILER WARNING
It was Flowey’s laugh. AHH THAT’S SCARY
Can't find anyone else doing such an in-depth look at this soundtrack, which I had more. Love the video.
-Mad Mew Mew
-Gaster's Theme
And on a similar topic,
-Toby also remade MEGALOVANIA for Super Smash Bros., and it's...significantly better than the original in almost every regard, and definitely worth checking out in this context.
sorry to hear about the loss of your mom, Jacob. Trust me, I know how hard it is.
@@MarcoMeatball Appreciate it man! So happy to have found your channel! ❤️
There were still some songs to be played, but wow, how beautiful to see someone who understands music reacting to something that marked my life.
Only unfortunately I think I didn't understand some explanations well, since I'm Brazilian and I only saw it through the RUclips caption.
❤=)
Fantastic reaction, loved seeing your analysis and I hope you didn't get spoiled too much, it really is a one of a kind experience. Can't wait for that Hopes and Dreams reaction and the orchestra!!
I never really thought about it until now with his reaction to the motifs/themes of Waterfall being in so many tracks (with some calls being wrong lol) but it made me realize the deeper meaning that theme has.
*I'll be getting into Neutral/Pacifist Route Ending spoilers related to the Legend you read about throughout the Waterfall Section. This is your warning before ya read any further!*
I like to think Waterfall sounds so sad because it holds the history of Undertale's past for all passersby to witness.
Obrigado❤️❤️🙏❤️🙏
I love how after listening to Undertale, and talking about a very emotional thing concerning his dad, the most goofy shift in music takes place with the song that might play when you fight sans.
😂
Just imagine chilling with monsters happily on surface and suddenly you fight with Sans
Marco I wish you all success possible, hearing why the track "UNDERTALE" means a lot to you hit me hard in the feels, and I wish you all of luck! You are awesome, dude! 💙
Also happy birthday! :D
thank you so much
So someone wrote at the 2 hr mark roughly.
Age 23.
Toby fox is legitimately a prodigy.
Labor of true love. Undertale is what you get when the Dev is making a game for the best reasons. Not these cash cow triple A titles we've been getting lately. Hollow shells disguised as a fun game.
Jeeze, I had no idea he was THAT young. My god.
26:45 Well one has Heartache, so one is determined to go through even more hearthache to achieve the goal.
❤️ thanks for sharing.
I keep seeing this so I think I have to
@@MarcoMeatball He has album commentaries on his channel for each Risk of Rain album and listening to his breakdown of inspirations and ideas is fascinating.
Best thing about Marco's reaction vidoes is getting to see him grooving, is so contagious
I’m glad you like that 😂
i love the 1+2, +3+, 4+ series of eighth notes whenever it shows up. (emphasis on the 1, + of 2, and 4 +) it's such an energetic rhythm. along with it's counterpart, dotted quarter+dotted quarter+quarter. (4/4) that feeling of moving forward is so good
this is about "Run"
to clarify: whenever it shows in music at ALL. i teach private music lessons
:) thanks for sharing that. I wish I had sheet music so I could dive into the complexities a bit more. I can’t hear them sadly. But I can see them.
Much love.
❤️
@@MarcoMeatball Will you be listening to the Undertale Yellow Soundtrack?
I watched this entire thing, and I am so happy I did. I forgot how wonderful the music in this game is, and it just makes me want to play the game all over again.
That was really nice of you to watch the whole thing. ❤️
Yeah I watched it too XD honestly what else can I do ;-; I got the coronavirus
