i love this movie dearly, and i love that you immediately cottoned on that christian is a shitty boyfriend. their relationship is a bust from the moment we see them! the guy has zero empathy for her, and that in part pushes her right into the arms of the cult. the part that really got me is when christian asks "a real attestupa?" meaning he knew what it was, and didn't warn her about the suicides that were about to happen. the whole friend group should've warned her, really, but since it's a horror movie, we don't get that- but it's especially egregious to me seeing as he's her boyfriend and he should be the one to care enough. like, yes, spooky cult, but the scariest part is how the relationship made them so vulnerable to manipulation. good catch on the face in the background when she's being carried on the platform, i didn't notice that when i first watched! the girlfriend was the one with the wet hair in the wheelbarrow, she was drowned. there's an extended scene in the director's cut, if you have the stomach for it. when i first watched this movie, i had to sit in silence and think about it for like an hour afterwards, and then share with my sister in law (who loves horror) as soon as possible because i just had to talk to someone about it.
I was thinking about this movie a little more the other day, and a part that really stuck out to me (that I didn't really think about when it happened), was that weird story when Pelle's brother was introducing Connie and her new "bf" (fiance). And Connie said something along the lines of, "we'd been on one date, and I didn't even know it was a date." Obviously Pelle's brother had a crush on Connie. And I think we can maybe assume that Pelle had a crush on Dani, or at least he developed one. So did they both bring couples, knowing that they were going to sacrifice the bf/fiance, and then try to absorb the women into their village? And because Connie freaked out and they had to kill her, is that why Pelle's brother sacrificed himself in the end? Or maybe the were going to kill her all along, so Pelle's brother had always intended to sacrifice himself? I don't know, just thinking out loud, but interesting to me. I love a movie that has me analyzing it weeks later.
@@KaseWest i think pelle's brother brought connie+her boyfriend specifically to sacrifice, as a way of revenge for turning him down. but, connie+bf caused trouble and screamed during the attestupa, and you can hear the elder chastising pelle's brother for not warning them ahead of time and disrupting the ritual. because of that, he needs to make up for it by sacrificing himself. pelle doesn't have to sacrifice himself because he brought new blood (christian, to mate with the redhead), the new may queen, and the others were intended to be sacrificed all along- pelle honored the harga. the village was never going to assimilate connie because she is brown- notice how all the people in the village are white as snow? she was always going to be sacrificed one way or another as well, but because pelle's brother didn't plan ahead enough to warn his sacrifices not to cause a fuss during a sacred ritual, he's got to go as well.
How exactly is he a shitty boyfriend? You realize their relationship was done and he was going to break up with her, right? And that’s not “the whole friend group”…? That’s HIS friend group. They had no obligation to do anything. And Pelle DID say what happens at 72. She just didn’t realize he was serious. If Christian was a shitty boyfriend, hed have still broken up with her like he planned even after her family was obliterated. But he didn’t. Because obviously. So he was obligated.
@@Hey_Jamie are you shitting me, "going to," you realize he had a million opportunities to break up with her instead of being a shithead bf? the only "obligation" that's there is the awkwardness of him looking like a dick for it, the conundrum is him being a fake mf and more things "obligating" him to be a fake mf literally gaslights her about her psycho sister the first ten minutes of the movie, is too much of a pussy to simply break it off with her for A YEAR they said by the way, BEFORE her family died, forgets her birthday, plans a whole trip without telling her and pouts and gaslights her again because of his dishonesty when she would have been fine if he went, springs it on his friends' plans at last minute to please her and even lies to them in that moment that she's going, instead of being HONEST, AGAIN--so he's a shitty friend too, steals his friend's idea for a thesis, the list goes on and on. It was so obviously intended for him to be a shitty person overall be so fucking fr
Yesss so glad you’ve done Midsommar and Hereditary. Another interesting “horror” movie is Cadaver on Netflix. It’s a Norwegian film with subtitles, but the concept is great and it’s executed pretty well.
At 39:27 - You mentioned that you wondered if this was based on any kind of customs in reality. Ari Aster took from several Nordic pagan religions (several Vikings, several Asatru, several others), and cobbled together a made-up religion, but closely resembling parts and pieces of other things that DID exist in Scandinavia.
At 32:21 - This blonde girl is not Maja, the redhead. However, she seems to be a little older (not by much), and is explaining things, as much as things ever get explained to Christian.
Florence Pugh acted her ass off that's some oscar worthy shit. The Academy won't take horror seriously sadly. Definitely more of a reality based horror though mainly about brainwashing. I loved it but man was it fucked up ha....
With the brother who liked Connie but was not successful pursuing her, i got the implication that he was trying to recruit her as a May Queen like Pelle did with Dani. But she wasn't vulnerable like Dani so she winds up as a sacrifice instead.
@@astrid_live That's a good point. It makes him seem more malicious then. He brought her to the cult while knowing she had no chance to join, even if she wanted to join.
I loved your reaction!! This is the ultimate breakup film… it’s so good! You have to watch Hereditary. It has become my favorite horror film. Ari Aster is the new master of dread…. He’s the best!!🙌
Part of the problem with the cultural relativism about elder care is that this psychotic "community" for sure would kill someone who refused to commit suicide as directed. They wouldn't merely expel them.
Love seeing reactions to this lol. Just seen recently on tv smokin aces two still awesome. Its action movie. Haven't seen first one one while but that ones awesome too lol. Have you seen those. Seems like if you search for it no one is reacting to that. One video said they're misunderstood classic movies I think lol
there's a movie coming out ( or maybe it is already) called The Lamb. Preview reminds me of this movie which i LOVE. good reaction. if you want another good one to watch it's called Suspiria. Pretty messed up like this movie
I kind of wish they showed Connie’s death, where she was chained to a rock and thrown in the water. This is probably my favorite horror movie in the last 10-15 years
I can handle a lot and I really enjoyed this movie but I remember smoking like an ounce with my friend before going to see this and yea bad idea haha! I was sweating and was intensely fixated on this film! So good tho
My Reactions was exactly the same as yours. But I find it a little bit disturbing , but I have to say the cinematography was amazing. I don't think this is real events
The movies you’ve done so far are excellent, except for Palm Spring - I haven’t seen it. I would ignore anyone recommending Sinister. Boring and generic. The Witch, Babadook, The Lighthouse…more in line with what you’re doing here. And if you’re REALLY brave, try Possesion(1981). Extra weird and disturbing!
“Kill ‘em. Kill ‘em all.” Uh, because he wants to break up with his girlfriend and they encourage him because they know he isn’t happy? He’s not a piece of shit. He didn’t want to be in the relationship. He was going to break up with her. But then her whole family died. If he was a piece of shit, he would have broken up with her despite her losing her whole family. But he felt obligated not to leave her because how could he?!
"Get rid of him" yep I wish more movie characters had this level of clarity and sense of will.

@Kelli Franklin How was Parasite horror?
I’m glad you gave this a chance- really makes the audience question their own susceptibility to cult tactics. You’re reaction was awesome to watch!

could be, but these people probably would prefer dani's skin color and european appearance over connie's anyway

Standard reaction. Good job!
I don’t even know what influenced me to watch it a second time, as I only thought it was okay. Now it’s one of my favorite movies
Already know I'm watching your hereditary one next lol. Love that movie too lol

Hahaha I’m used to that. Funny enough when your notification popped up I thought it said Collin Kaepernick.
I loved your reaction to the douchey guys in this video! Will you please adopt me and protect me forever? No? Okay.
