  • If you paid a deposit for recycling bottles and cans, you're supposed to get your money back. It's part of California's 33-year-old bottle bill. But don't expect smooth sailing because many retailers are flouting the law. Andrea Nakano reports. (2-13-20)

    When I was a kid in the 1970s most every retailer had a collection of empty soda bottles at the front of the store waiting for the bottler to pick them up, when they did their deliveries, and take them back to the bottling factory to be cleaned, refilled, and return to the stores. Maybe the solution is the require the manufacturer to take returns.

    Why is it the retailers responsibility to shoulder the cost of managing a government recycling program? So the retailer takes 10 cents that goes to the government as tax. Then they have to pay out of pocket to customers that return bottles and they have to pay to dispose/recycle them plus pay for the manpower to process all this. The store is losing probably 50 cents on every bottle brought back. The government clearly can't afford to process the refunds so they put the burden on the retailers.

    • @leoblazer74
      @leoblazer74 4 года назад +6

      @Lee Birdie They should not have to be put in this position to begin with. The state collects the "deposit" from each bottle and does nothing useful with the money to help the program or retailers. The small mom and pop stores are the ones that get it worst but they are also who california politicians seem to loathe the most. I mean, they have to shoulder the burden and costs of this program and in exchange, criminals can walk into any store and steal anything they please so long as it is under 900 bucks and it is perfectly legal and you the retailers are stuck. Gotta love California.

      You do realize it is the government taking your money not the retailer. Every bottle they sell the 5 or 10 cent fee goes to the government as tax. When you return it the retailers probably have no way to get that money back from the government so if they issue you a refund they are paying you out of their pocket so the government never gives you your money back. Plus the retailer has to shoulder the cost of processing, storing, and transporting these bottles to a recycling center. The store loose tons of money to a poor government program.

    I run a crv and recycling center... Do you have any idea how disgusting some of the material that comes in for recycle is? And they're just pacing it up on the belts we put our food on? The last thing we should be doing, is having our food retailers take in crv... I have watched people dump their bags and the cockroaches scatter all over the place... We have post control come every 2 weeks but will never be rid of the cockroaches. I've even watched a guy bring in recyclables in in his grubhub bag... YUMMMMMYYYYYYYY

      Most people have no idea how highly regulated recycling is by the state... There's daily load limits, out of state plate restrictions, crv vs non crv differentiation, fines for not putting something we don't even pay for on your receipt.... Then there's the reporting headache... I can completely understand why some of these stores just throw it in the garbage

    • @retxab84
      @retxab84 4 года назад

      @David T bordering states are marked with crv even though it's not paid so the bottles to have to change their process... The biggest problem with the out of state plate $50 roll is that someone that rents a uhaul to bring in all their recyclables they've been saving for a year, they have to take EVERYTHING back with them if they have over $50 and are out the cost of rental for the day because of it... The real problem is that it's regulated by the state... Bureaucracy

If I buy a beer it clearly says on the label "bottle remains property of the brewery, please return the empty bottle to the store for a refund of the cost of the bottle" and the store just gives the empty bottles back to the delivery guy who brings them new full bottles.
    Also stores are allowed to refuse to refund bottles from brands they do not sell themselves, as they might not have a contract with a wholesaler that will take them back.

    As a former Trader Joe's employee I can tell you why the retailers are not accepting back the cans and bottles. It costs much, much more than the $100 per day fine to take in, pay out, bundle then find a way to recycle the returns. They ended up at the dumpster on pick up day. In TJ's defense, their store model doesn't allow for the space to store up the returns and no space for a recycle center. The ultimate problem is with the state. Re-Planet was partially funded by the, but when wages went up, centers began to close pushing back on the retailers who had long since stopped accepting the returns.

    How many actual operating junk yards are left in America. Most people (the more financially stable.) thought they were an eye sore and would rather see them developed into something nicer for the community. They were the actual recycling centers, a place full of old junk cars and anything else that was metal. This is nothing more than a sham absolutely brought together by our trustworthy politicians. I grew up around junk yards ( recycling centers ) I know as I have grown older there are less and less of this junk yard available. This shouldn’t be left to the store selling the products, the infrastructure required to recycle is to great for a Walgreens/ grocer to manage let alone finance. If people really took the time to think about it they would see the many holes in this idea and why it would end due to failure.

    For stores to recycle, it is as simply as easy and having them there for your beverage distributor to pick them up on their delivery. No empty pickup, no delivery accepted. Best if you put the returns in the spot designated for deliveries, so the requirement is to pick up the returns to make deliveries. A store not knowing where to return them is absolute BS. The problem is the stores are taking deliveries and not having a complete returnable container loop.
    As a customer, I don't buy bottled anything if there is no place to return the empties. When suppliers are sent the message, with enough volume, they will listen.

    I work in the grocery business, we were told we'd get extra hours to serve this purpose but we don't at my store. It's also horribly unhygienic to do recycling at grocery stores, at my location we don't have some set aside area out in the parking lot area, we do it out front, by our doors. Homeless and Residents alike, we get bags full of muck and junk- you have people who dump liquid from bottles out onto the sidewalk, or might try to empty their cans INTO A SHOPPING CARD. Some people want to fight employees about not taking detergent bottles or polices on hard alcohol bottles, dairy or 100% juice bottles. Our state should have funded better recycling infrastructure- and keep the unclean task away from your food sources. If you have noticed larger camps of homeless outside your grocery stores over the past year- the recycling opportunity might be a part of that.

    It's NOT recycling that these places call it. It is "Deposit REFUND". Big difference. The "Recycling" is the after market. If you buy a "KEG" of beer, you return it for refund of deposit. If you rent a "Rug-Doctor", you return it and receive your "Deposit". They've found a way years ago knowing the confusion would let THEM keep the "Deposit".
