When k was a young man my father bought a condo in the beachfront. The first group of condos after you cross the bridge at the northern tip from Placida. Boca Grande North. It was so special I have life long memories of my grandma and my parents there. Fishing and bbqing the fish on the waters edge with amazing sunsets golf carts tennis. Amazing to go back in time ;)
This is where my family stayed every summer on our vacay. Our home away from home. When we first started going we stayed at Sea Oats but once my dad bought a boat we needed a boat slip and started staying at Boca Grande North.
I just spent a week there on my boat......it was in the 80s in December, beautiful beaches and amazing for bird watching (or manatees) and other wildlife. The old train station has a nice restaurant on the end......this history of the island that I saw really makes sense after watching this vid.
" I would love it if it could be the way it was then, but times have changed and you can't go back ". Who hasn't fantasized about returning to a point in time that was special in their formative years. If only...
I wish I could live here. My fiancé and I have thought about moving close to the island. Then working at some of the restaurants or resorts. We both have a range of skills.
My father worked at the port for 42 years. He and my mother raised six kids there myself being the youngest. I am constantly stunned by the use of made up "facts" about Boca Grande. People say the Orange Blossom Special was the name of the train that brought phosphate to the port. Not true.....The phosphate trains were designated #387 and #380. The PASSENGER train was sometime referred to as the Orange Blossom Special but in truth..........the OBS never came to Boca Grande.
Indeed. I also heard there was an accident at the Trestle part of the Wye at the end of Boca where a locomotive actually fell into the drink. I live in Englewood so I've always had a curiosity with the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad and the Boca Grande route.
My dad was born and raised on Boca Grande my grandad was a constable and work for the railroad and never mentioned the OBS my wifes great uncle was captain Sprott that ran the ferry;
I think the Orange Blossom Special ran the FEC tracks from Savannah to Miami, don't think it ever ran the West Coast, could be wrong but... Most likely some local Boca Grande residence nicknamed it the OBS but I don't believe that was ever the official name.
How many of you watching this think the song at the end is worthless Jimmy Buffet? It isn't.........It's a guy named Jim Morris who is now passed away but always served to fool people.

@@madmike2170 man! To have lived there before the snowbirds discovered it. Must have been a simple way of life then.
Rich can't exist without the poor...how ironic...
Very interesting.

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they're yours; if they don't they never were.
