I was going to argue that Alfred being the Joker the whole time couldn’t be plausible because of Arkham Asylum. Alfred couldn’t be at 2 places at the same time. Couldn’t think of any way, Alfred could sidestep this unless there was something set up with the police and the asylum (probable if Alfred had a small fortune and the system was as corrupt as reported). Multiple Jokers in conjunction with this… could make this all possible.

Alfred came back from war with PTSD. No one knew what PTSD was at the time and he didn't get the proper treatment. He and his family found that calm situations helped him keep his focus on the now and Martha Wayne hired him through a help program for war-vets. At first everything was going as they all had hoped, things calmed down and he seemed to be doing better. But without anyone noticing, over time, he started to resent them, get paranoid and make plans. He felt they had encouraged him to stay even though he would have been fine by himself, he blamed them for wasting his life as their slave.
So he hired a man to kill them in front of Bruce, nudged Bruce into becoming the Batman throughout his upbringing, then in his mind, he'd spend the remainder of his wasted life to ruin Martha and Thomas' legacy, hoping they were watching from the afterlife. OR, as Bruce grew older, Alfred realized he wanted a child of his own, but was too old, didn't have any cash or woman, and felt he had basically raised Bruce anyway, so he killed Thomas and Martha.
Either way, it's possible. There are 3 Jokers after all, afaik.. Not totally up to date, but I remember Batman sitting in the Mobius Chair, asking who the Joker was, when it said there were 3 different Jokers.

Also, it would be interesting if Joker didn't have Alfred's knowledge which would explain why Joker couldn't have taken advantage of things. This would also explain why Bruce could never kill the Joker. Even if it was only out of instinct, he might realize that killing Joker meant that Alfred was never coming back. The opportunities that come from this are very interesting. But somehow I doubt we'll get anything like that anytime soon.

  • @teddoichiban

I never liked the "Batman is crazy" depiction. Batman has always and again recently explained in the comics that it wasn't just the death of his parents that inspired him to do this. It's understanding that this is what every single person who loses someone to senseless crime goes through. And he wanted to make sure that no one suffered like that again. It didn't take long for him to realize that the criminal justice system didn't work. Black Gate is corrupt, Arkham is a revolving door, and metahumans were on the rise.
Learning martial arts and self defense was the beginning, but after getting into peak human shape and advancing into more and more hidden/elite forms of martial arts, was when he started to see the idea of becoming an image. He's not just an idiot that dresses up like a bat because he's emotionally unhinged or something, he is one of the most intelligent men in his world, and possibly the universe. (Yes, he's out smarted aliens on numerous occasions)
So yeah, the Batman that recently survived re-entry without a space suit and no vehicle is my Batman. You can all have the Batman as presented in things like Harley Quinn.

He helps Bruce heal by creating various characters and schemes to keep him motivated and engaged both mentally and physically instead of broken down and depressed. Alfred creates the schemes with the help of some very talented writers, directors and choreographers like a Hollywood production. Alfred sends them a message when Bruce is on his way. The Alfred Joker could easily be the classic Joker of Adam West.

No one gets hurt its all staged ect, but same time the classic joker can accidentally incite a troubled inspiration of new blood and wonton destruction, meaning Alfred could be the OG goofy Joker, and can also heighten a New version of The Joker via a 3rd party. A onlooker on the preformed chaos.
The New Joker sees its all and act becomes a victim, and snaps laughing talking to himself about the paradox of life is like a panel a comic strip
Just a joke where God watches the world burn
Thus the actual Joker is born and Alfred can retire such a dark but caring chapter.

Alfred as joker stopped Bruce from becoming the Batman who laughs before even revealing he’s the joker.. that’s a hero right there even if he did all that wrong

I can see this truly happening in the canon serious because in reality it like the butler, like he is, there’s been a serving to the family for so many years is century I can see him turn into a villain to help Bruce find his way in life

Joker as Alfred possible but not with the pennyworth military history that won British and American highest awards. Alfred playing joker and hiring his whole rouges gallery - just the jokers kill count makes Alfred ( the let alone his buddies) the highest form of social paths the world has ever seen.

Quite honestly, I'd be down to watch an adaptation of an Elseworlds where Alfred is secretly the Joker...or as the Dorkly channel once proposed, if not being Joker, then a version where Alfred is secretly the real crime lord of Gotham who employs Joker and others to facilitate Bruce's mental ill health.

Why are people doing this? Painting strength as weakness and weakness as strength? Good being painted as evil and evil being portrayed as being some misunderstood form of good?
All of a sudden the strongest minds are now the weakest? Instead of someone focusing their mind and taking up responsibility as an act of therapy (which has been proven to be the most productive way of overcoming trauma - see congnitive therapy et al) heroes are being painted as being the weakest of minds?

Kinda wish the explanation wasn't that Alfred just wanted Bruce to keep busy and be happy but instead that when Bruce went to train as a ninja Alfred had lost his mind being all alone and decided to keep himself busy and happy by using his money to create a criminal organization

...yeah, and that also would have meant that Alfred was the one who beat Jason Todd to death with a crowbar. And paralyzed Barbara Gordon. This literally CAN'T be. The implications are too massive.

It would also mean he manipulated a psychiatrist with a promising career into becoming psychotic herself, and fall in love with him, and then tortured her on a regular basis, and when she wanted to leave, convinced her to stay so he could torture her some more.
It also means he willingly tried to help actual criminals and alien villains in plots that couldve resulted in global disasters. And of course in the conquering of the world's nations, which also means he is a traitor to his two nations he has citizenship in, the UK and the US.
Also his plan doesnt explain Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Man-bat and other actual SUPERvillains on Batman's rogues gallery. And of course, being in Arkham ASYLUM means that those people have been tested and determined truly insane by actual professional psychologists specailizing in criminal insanity, and it wouldve had to happen to most of them many times over.

Alfred would have to have the powers of a time lord for any of this to make sense. At the very least he’d need to a super genius with super speed to accomplish an impossible number of tasks in such a short time. As is, the amount of tasks he already does for the Bat family supersede the believable.
