- We did it! Thank you all for hitting that subscribe button. It's a meaningless figure really, but it still means a lot as a measure of support. To celebrate, I drove a proper dream vehicle of mine - a 1978 Land Rover Forward Control 101-inch V8, courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works! I'd never driven one before - would it match up to my expectations? This is a design made for the military, with over 2600 built.
As an extra bonus, this video includes a look around one of the Judge Dredd film cars, which were based on the FC101! That film car is for sale with Hallam Bros in Hayfield, High Peak for £25,000 - www.hallambros...
Huge thanks to Jaguar Land Rover. There are tours of the Classic Works, which cost £49 adult, £39 child. It is an astonishing place. www.jaguar.co....
Here's a previous look around this remarkable place. • Jaguar Land Rover Clas...
Finally, the HubNut store is still trading while I'm overseas, and can be found at hubnut.org - don't worry. The videos will keep on coming too! Albeit, not daily as has been the case recently. Thank you. It means a lot to be able to call this my job. It's hard work (believe it or not!) but I do not mind at all. - Авто/Мото
Really enjoyed the video as usual. I was the mechanic on a trans African trip in 90-91. We drove 2 of them from Oxfordshire to Uganda. Across the Sahara, through the Congo. Involved in a military coup. Lots of awesome adventures and the trucks are the best land rover ever made. We ran with around a tonne in the back which really soya them out.
I used to drive these back in my army days....great fun! The GS version was for towing the 105mm light gun with the gun crew riding in the back. Congrats on your 50k milestone 😊
Our mortar platoon used them as well with the ammunition in the trailer.
The Woeful RB 44 replaced these fine machines in 93 Worst decision ever .
Alan, the Pinzgauer replaced the 101. The RB44 was mostly used by Signals. I seen a few in Bosnia being used by SAS based at the school Vitez. Agreed it was a dreadful vehicle!
I drove one in MT Troop. I was told you were supposed to go on a course before you drove them, obviously I never got sent on that. The first thing I always had to find was an adjustable spanner. REME used to put a bolt under the accelerator to limit travel as a crude restrictor which I used to remove. Standout was when someone took one out and I said "do you think you can handle the power?" A couple of hours later he re-appeared looking slightly the worse foe wear, he'd put it in a ditch. Fortunaely he was completely unharmed. I was always slightly wary of them as their was a story going around, true or false, that the prop shaft would disconect at the front and turn it into a pole vaulter...
I remember being on the A1, in an 850 Mini, foot to the floor and being passed by a trio of 101" Rovers, man they were on a mission! Well done on the 50,000 subs.
Probably being driven by bored squaddies seeing how fast a 101 will go :D
You've just reminded me how much fun I had in my 101 RHD GS back in the early 90s. Huge fun at traffic lights - would beat lots of hot hatches up to about 30 mph... Sadly at 12mpg I couldn't afford to keep it. Oh, by the way, the ride is much improved with half a ton of sand in the back. Off road it was just awesome. Now going to dig out the photos and relive some memories... Thanks Ian and enjoy NZ. Scenery in South Island superb.
Congrats Ian...great achievement and I’m sure more growth to come for the channel. Look forward to further escapades in NZ over the coming weeks and months 👌👏👍
It's not that long ago that I found your site - circa 9k subscribers. Always a good view.
Just fell off my chair with excitement! One of my favourite ever vehicles. Thank you and well done!
Good job on the 50k, you deserve it mate!
There is a lot to be said for older less sophisticated machinery, two hands on the wheel, fully concentrated on the job in hand, no chance of pissing about on your phone ;) , what a fantastic vehicle, Congratulations on 50k
Congratulations mr hubnut 50k! Been waiting for this, I hope your down under hosts appreciate what a celebrity is in their presence!
Proud to be part of the 50k. Keep up the good work Ian
Congratz! And seldomly have I seen such a happy driver :D
Used these as part of a Milan antitank team. We had missiles lining the back with a firing post and other kit. Awesome vehicles!
you don't get them offered in a VW Golf options catalogue
Congratulations you deserve it. Great video and good choice of Land Rover
Congratulations on 50,000 subs - I see you now have your imitators, but the original and best is right here! I think I started subscribing about the time you got TWC...
It is becoming a genre of RUclips videos in its own right. Some of them are pretty good as well - who says you can't have too much of a good thing?
I totally started watching with the Invacar. The mighty algorithm got that one absolutely right.
Same here, i was just you tube surfing and spotted the invacar,an almost mythical creation in the car world, a combination of AC cobra genes and NHS funding.
If I've helped inspire others to have a go, that can only be a good thing.
I arrived here after a hint on an EV channel. Subscribed because of the LEAF and the electric Bug.
Congratulations on the 50k subscriber milestone! :)
Congratulations on 50,000 subscribers, I always look forward to watching HubNut videos.
No triangle of doom with those wipers!
Congratulations on the 50k. Could see how excited you were to drive the Landie. Love your work!
Superb video, I got to about halfway through thinking "gosh, new zealand roads and signs look just like ours!" until the penny dropped 🤦♀️ I think your cameraman needs a special mention, the panning and movement was absolutely perfect 👍
Neil did a grand job. A former colleague and top chap.
When I was serving in the TA during the Cold War I got the chance to drive a couple of these - the Mortar Platoon had them, we (HQ Coy) had a 101 ambulance and we later got an FFR (fitted for radio) as a command vehicle, most were RHD. Even though they weren't fast (you really wouldn't want to go fast in one) they felt fast if only for the sound of the magnificent V8 - thanks Buick! I do recall the REME mechanics had a load of problems with broken gear linkages though. However they were absolutely rubbish in the snow (Otterburn in winter). I was following the FFR in a mere Defender and the 101 kept falling off the road - too much weight on the front wheels perhaps? The Defender had no such problem. But you felt like King of the Road when you drove one, with the commanding driving position and the sound of the V8 just begging you to put your foot down. You've brought back happy memories, thanks Ian
Congratulations on 50k. Wont be long till the 100k :)
That'll be the Unimog trip.
Oh YES. A unimog would be absolutely brilliant!
@@RobRandomVids Get working on that 100k subs then ;)
50,000 people that have impeccable taste..well done 👍
Apart from that one person that down voted the video 🙁
Great job on 50k subs. I've been here since about 15k the content just keeps getting better. Thanks for all the hard work.
Well deserved. Onwards and upwards Ian - you are one of the very best on RUclips. Surprised the TV channels aren't in pursuit yet.
Many congrats on the 50.000 subs...very well deserved. Loved the Forward Control 'Landy' especilly that massive 'headrest' behind the driver's seat. Wonderful.
50k Big Congrats!!
Driving the bouncy FC101 down the nice and bumpy Fosse Way seems appropriate. Despite living within 15 miles I've never actually been up Burton Dassett hills so bonus footage for me there. A year or so after Judge Dredd was released the Land Rover Dealer in Stratford on Avon (Yarnolds as it was then) had 3 or 4 of the Dredd Landies For Sale, from memory they were asking silly money for them.
Congratulations Ian well deserved 50k . Lovely 101 and good choice of vehicle
Good job, now you're half way to 100,000! Fun times.
The driving position is so high up I can see my house from there ... in Melbourne, OZ !
Thanks for the enjoyable video. What a ride eh? I especially like the 2 cup holders hanging off the dashboard showing how caring the Army is about it's lads.
love the wee model jeepy thing in front of the brown land rover (RXC 624E)
“You’re in the army now, Son! Control that truck! Move it! Move it!”
Hehe! ...What an heroic rising, long one (gear leaver) not withstanding, to mastery of the joyful obstreperousness! Reminiscent of a loco cab, those flirtatious little wipers with all the cheeky, making Sgt Hub Nut spatially aware of his knees! Not one to take around The Ring, perhaps, but if the Chinese invade, this martial machine has a driver!
Congratulations Ian with 50K followers. What a gold mine there at Jaguar LandRover Classics, love the ride with the FC101.
I love the 101s, they have such a stance, I saw (and filmed) some brilliant camper conversions at last years LRO show. Congratulations on your milestone!
What a fascinating fascination for wiper blades and their angles :-)!!
That's my version of heaven right there! What a place!
Congrats on the 50k subs. I've only recently found your channel but I have binge watched all your previous content so it feels like I've been here forever! :-)
Congrats on the subs Ian, very well deserved. Always enjoy your road Tests as you actually drive the bloody things instead of poodling around love it!.
Huge congratulations on the 50K subscribers. Your videos are a highlight of any day! Looks like you had so much fun in this weird old Landie. Scary at any speed!
Congratulations Ian on getting to 50k. I remember when you got to 10k and thought your channel was something special, easy and very entertaining to watch.
True story. I went to school with the guy who went on to design the exterior of the Evoque. He used to doodle cars on my exercise books :-). Congrats on the subs, 10,000 subs was only April 2018...
Reminds me of the trucks from Trumpton, Chigley & Camberwick Green and believe me, that is a really good thing.
Congratulations ian, I'm not surprised. Very addictive viewing. What a place, doubt you slept much the night before that day out.
Well done on the 50k Ian. Always amazed that such bomb-proof, chunky, go-anywhere engineering like the Land Rover has such tiny, spindly wipers - even the normal everyday Defenders
Congratulations Ian! Very well deserved 50k followers. I think you'll be at double that in 2021. At least.
Also your assistant was doing a good job at holding the camera and pointing it at interesting and applicable stuff!
Used to have a right hand drive 101 GS with winch, most memorable occasion was seeing a boy racer and his XR2 off st a set of lights, out pulled him unit 50mph!! Great vid kepp em coming
Congrats on hit the 50,000 subscriber mark! You deserve every last one since your content is nothing less than stellar😁.
Well done, 50K! You deserve to grow at an exponential rate with videos like this one. Absolutley brilliant. A good friend of mine was nearly killed by one of these in the early 80's. A soldier in Colchester, a big garrison town for those who don't know, forgot what a red traffic light meant. He jumped the lights and hit my friend who was riding his Suzuki TS250 across the junction. Friend spent several weeks in a coma. He survived but was never the same afterwards.
He didn't blame the vehicle though so we can still revel in the glory that is the FC101.
About time you got in a good vehicle excellent video thanks Ian 👍😂🇬🇧
I don't know what was the biggest shock.
The selection of vehicles you had a choice of
OR seeing you in smart shoes!! congratulations on 50k ,Iam a proud subscriber.
Congratulations on hitting 50,000 Subscribers Ian...👏😀👍
Congratulations on hitting 50k. Amazing you flew all the way back to the UK to make this and then flew straight back!!
😉
Congratulations on 50k subscribers.
Love these big beasts. They usually forgotten as a Land Rover product. The Dunsfold collection have the next generation of this truck designed for commercial use in the 1980's.
Just got a flashback of my 1st time climbing up a truck and ride away. The excitement for me as a kid was indescribably. It's so wonderful traveling along HubNut.
Congratulations Ian! On to the next 50k subs!
I find it hard to believe, that a vehicle with those looks makes those sounds. It's propper awesomeness that is!
Amazing vehicles, I loved owning mine, which was also LHD. I did a fair bit of work on it to make it more useable as do most people who use them regularly. I added the fairey overdrive and high ratio diffs. The originals have a very low gearing. I also added an LPG tank as the economy was as indicated low teens, worse off road!
They are truly amazing vehicles, and I feel proud to have owned such an iconic part of Land Rover heritage, the legendary 101 Forward Control
I don't think anyone here has seen him happier than when he was driving that vehicle!
The happiness, excitement and enthusiasm on his face was a joy to watch, great stuff Ian.
And well done on 50,000 subs.
Awesome truck! All I can say is nobody, nobody can beat this jeep!!!!
Congratulations ian. Forget top gear 5th gear you top them all. And the only you tuber that replies !! Great stuff keep it up 🙂
Congrats Ian, this channel just gets better and better! That land rover based judge dredd vehicle, there’s a guy lives near me with one in his front garden 😳
Awesome 50000!, great test drive, Hollywood Hub, and the Hub-Dread!!!!
Congratulations Ian on 50th subscribers. Have fun and keep up the good work .
What a beast, I always liked them since i had my Series 2a, back in 85, my first car, good review, cheers
Fantastic video! Good to see even official JLR cars 'mark their territory' at 27:14, as do my two!
Congratulations on 50K subscribers Ian!!! You're a great guy and deserve your success :) HubNuts the best channel on youtube :) Thanks for so many great videos and best wishes for the future :)
Congratulations on your 50K subs and the perfect vehicle to celebrate with.
A couple of weeks ago I asked you to do a vid on a Haflinger and you indicated you would if you could get a vehicle but what I nearly also asked you to test was the FC101 and you have done it.
I have had a roadgoing 101 for over 10 years and in my view they are the greatest series style LR there is. Here in Australia I manage to get mine offroad a lot and have driven it great distances - far more relaxed than a series 3 or 2 or even a series 2.
The 101 will get up to 120kph GPS speed on a long flat run and are a joy to drive after you get used to the steering, the gearchange, the ride, the noise and the numb bum.
Thanks - enjoyed the vid immensely.
Ian that was absolutely fascinating to watch.Proud to be one of your !! 50,000 subscribers,!! congratulations and thank you. This channel for me is "compulsive viewing". I wish you best of luck in your New Zealand/Australia adventure. The look on your face when you saw the Citroen BX GT ,...PRICELESS mate. Your humble and modest nature is an absolute credit to you. Cheers Stephano.
The smile on your face Ian says everything about the experience....just awesome .
Another good one Ian, congrats on your well deserved 50k subs, YAY! 😁😁
Love love love her growl. These are my favourite Land Rovers.
Not had the experience of going for a ride in one ,thanks for sharing this.Welcome to the world of Historic Military Vehicles , and the collectors who keep and restore them.
Good old Land Rover steering - it's like trying to control a nervous horse that keeps getting distracted. My daily driver is a 1967 Series 2, and much of the 101 seems very familiar...especially the constant adjustments needed to keep the thing in a (more or less) straight line. Those bar grip tyres won't have helped, mind. Great video, and congrats on getting to 50,000!
Congrats on 50k, I'd offer to shake hands, but my arm can't stretch to NZ... :D
I cheated and did that last April !
Congratulations on 50k - and your choice was very Hubnut - rare, old, uncomfortable, noisy, difficult to drive and most people have no idea what it actually is (but, don't think its particularly interesting) - but crucially quite mad and a lot of fun!
Congrats Ian
You lucky duck! I think there are more Land Rover owners who would like to have one of these than were ever made - I am one.
Well done getting to 50K subs!
Well done Ian!
:D :D :D Of all the marvellous and elegant cars in there you have probably chosen the most agricultural and least refined of all. Congrats on your 50.000 and cheers from one of your subscribers from Germany... :-)
Just back from the JLR Classic works tour - the 101 Ian drove was parked up with a sign saying "No not drive - no brakes!!" What an amazing place. I'd recommend the tour to anyone - there's even quite a lot of old British Leyland stuff in their collection.
Master cylinder packed up on the drive. Thankfully not completely!
50k, who would have thought! :-) Left hand drive with right hand drive blinker stalk, perfect. What a beast. You said it is like being in a truck, but it is a truck isn't it? Nicely diffused blinker lens too. I think a gravel car park is as close as most Range Rover drivers get to off roading :-) Spectacular views. Cheers.
Great vid, I started driving in a LandRover, and have always wanted a FC. Everything is just 'there', you can see how it works, feel how it's working. I remember when they launched the Discovery in 1991 with the tag line "everything you expect from a LandRover", I almost when to the local showroom for a test drive. I wanted to take it to the local Jet Wash and hose down the inside. One day, I will own a FC, and then my life will be complete.
Congratulations on 50k plus subscribers. You deserve it Ian. Thanks for keeping me happy with your exploits.
Brilliant Ian; wish I still had mine. Still can't believe Land Rover isn't British owned! Congrats on the 50K; good luck in NZ. Cheers Wayne
V few Brit car mfgs now :(
Great video mate. A remember my driving my mates mk3 transit high top which he's still got down the m9 motorway to Edinburgh in a hurricane you really had to pay attention it was about the same as your landy half turn either way it did nothing nightmare to keep straight lol great fun be safe have fun cheers 😂👍👌
Ian,
None of us are jealous.......or very good liars!
What a collection of toys to play with!
Really enjoying the NZ holiday travelogue, keep it up.
Cheers
Steve
50k! Congratulations to you Sir, a suitably apt vehicle for the occasion, the last shot encompasses the glorious, glorious noise even a standard exhaust system supplies us with, truly visceral, in all senses, wonderful
Brilliant video, Ian! We love our 1975 GS 101 that we've owned for over twenty years.
We used these in the TA army 4para , great fun
Wonderful Ian, 50,000 of happy subscribers.
Your skill and knowledge drawing car fans around the world.
Rich & carnivorous
Cats LA.CALIF USA
Might be more reliable as an electrical source than your power company lol
Well done ok the 50k subs. You got a choice of all the classics there and you chose that crate?
Most squddies hated them compared to the standard Rover.
Two points that you didn't pick up on, LHD because they served in the British Army of the Rhine, Germany and on the front next to the brake reservoirs the clips for carrying small arms, rifles or submachine guns. Finally Ian believe me that when you're out in the Oulou and it's been raining low range can be the difference between moving on and not going anywhere, albeit slowly.
Well I've commented on another's query on the LHD - I just said most of our battles were overseas ;) - Well, apart from the Bloody Scots !
Thanks for explaining the small arms holders - a tad more useful than cup holders ;)
Congratulations on hitting the 50k subscribers Ian. The number of subscribers to your channel has increased so much in the past couple of years.
I hope your travels around New Zealand Australia will help those numbers grow even more.
Looking forward to more videos of your adventures in New Zealand. Great channel and once again well done Sir.
Well done on the 50.000 good luck in NZ, Matt
Wow this a cool place is it open to the public on special days .the 101 is a class act and you are a great tester ..great stuff
See the description. You can visit, although it isn't cheap.
Thanks for that .....good luck
Congratulations (again) richly deserved!
BEAST of a motor! Btw, I was subscriber No.33333, it came up on my screen. Congrats on the 50 HubNut.
You did the right thing it's freezing cold and raining in Wales
thanks Ian and congrats on 50k! blast from past for us, talking of Elmdon and Land Rover works, I grew up just living up the road off Damson Lane within easy reach of the plant... and went to Solihull College of Tech in the 80s.... also Burton Dassett... great memories of lovely days out with my new husband at the time! thanks again and enjoy your trips down under :-)
Thank you Ian for another enjoyable informative video here`s to the next 50k!!
