- Just shy of 100 aircraft, the fleet of Vietnam Airlines is fairly modern and has an overall average age of just under eight years making it quite young when compared to other major airlines. The Vietnamese flag carrier operates both the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 and has further plans to expand and modernize its narrowbody fleet, which currently consist of Airbus A321s and a single ATR72. In this video, we take an in-depth look at the mainline fleet of Vietnam Airlines.

I must admit, the airline's livery makes the A350 and 787 very beautiful ❤️
True
I wanted to say exactly the same thing :)
Especially the A350
As a Vietnamese Software Engineer who is working on the 787 Family at Boeing, I'm so excited for both the company's and the airline's future.
I'm in Vietnam at the moment. Flew on an A321 from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh.
Came in a little hot but no waiting in a hold lol
I have flown long and short haul with this airline numerous times and have been impressed with the in flight service and professionalism of the pilots. Never had any issues with them
While they did take a hit during covid, remember that the HAN-SGN route was the busiest air route in the world at some point during the pandemic (I know you mentioned those routes were very busy). It looks like their 787 dreamliners are their only planes with lie flat business (Maybe their a350s too), so it’s nice to hear they’re taking delivery of more
The airline offered lie-flat business on all 787s and A350s. I remembered during the pandemic, the ticket prices for SGNHAN route was very cheap, maybe about 1/2 of the regular prices, and also the airline announced to use wide-body aircrafts for most of the flights on this route during the pandemic, as a way to promote the local travel industry. That's why the route was very busy during the pandemic (with an exception of a short period during the most severe outbreak of the pandemic)
Jetblue mint has lie-flat in business
My favourite livery in the skies
I’d love to see Vietnam Airlines fly the Airbus A220 and since it is an extremely efficient regional jet I think the A220-100 would serve the airline well for ATR replacement and maybe some A220-300s or A320 neo aircraft for their short- medium haul needs… Vietnam 🇻🇳 should only go with the Airbus A220/A320 neo families since they already operate A321 neo fleet commonality would help lower costs…
I agree. I'm not sure why some people think it would be a wise move to acquire Embraer or boeing.
Remember the A220 is basically a Bombardier so there would be much less fleet commonality than you might think
The Airline has 2 sub-airlines: Vasco and Pacific which are not as efficient as the main one, so that the recovery from Covid is really slow compared to its main competitor in domestic market: VietJetAir. However, the quality of this airline is undeniable the best in the country and I hope it would survive and expand its service
Flew a 787 LHR to SGN in 2017, premium economy. Very comfortable and great service.
Wonder if the ATR72-600 was every considered as the natural successor to their current domestic fleet? I’ve flown Vietnam Airlines a few years back. They’re consistently the most affordable full-service option when travelling north of Malaysia and Singapore. Their product is nothing to scoff at either, a decent IFE offering on their long haul fleet and plush economy class seats on their regional fleet, all on very clean aircraft. I also really like their choice of upholstery colour, especially on their A321 business class.
No. Vietnam Airlines did operate the ATR 72, but not the -600, and are currently in the process of retiring the fleet, to be replaced by a more modern regional jet fleet to serve airports unable to accommodate the A321 like Dien Bien, Con Dao, Rach Gia. The replacement is due to be announced next year. At the moment, it is not certain which type is chosen, but it's likely that it is either the A220-100 or the E190-E2. Embraer already had a presence in Vietnam with Bamboo Airways currently operating the E190 and previously operated the stretched E195 to great success. And Airbus is just natural since most Vietnamese carriers use Airbus narrowbodies for their short haul domestic fleet.
As for their other types, they are betting on the A321neo. They might have possibly ordered the A320neo to replace older A321ceos, but I'm not so sure about it.
As for replacement of the ATR fleet, the E190-E2 would be best. Not only it will boost Embraer's current presence in the country and providing a bit of healthy competition for VNA's rival Bamboo Airways (who operates the older E190), but the E190-E2 takeoff and landing distance, on paper, is slightly less than the A220-100, fitting since some of the airport VNA wanted to serve only has a runway of less than 2000m (before upgrading). Specifically, Con Dao airport (VCS) and Dien Bien (DIN) are both 1830m (6004 ft) and Rach Gia (VKG) is 1500m (4920 ft).
For the A321ceos, I'd say keep going with the A321neos or be brave and go with the MAX 8 or 9. Maybe ordering the A321XLR would be a better choice since they already operate the type, which can save on training and maintenance cost. But then again, seeing Vietnamese airports crowded with A320s and A321s is kinda boring. And VietJet is bringing the MAX in to Vietnam.
I agree with you man 100% The ATR72-600'S Turboprops can be Replaced in Vietnam Airlines Fleet but the Embraer E190-E2's Or E195-E2's depending on the demand of which Airports the Vietnamese Carrier can operate them on the Airbus A320Neo Family Jets is a good Choice for The Carrier even The Boeing 787 Dreamliners too but the Boeing 737 Max Family I rather they put a hold on that for now however The A321XLR's will be a good move for them after there Launch for 2024 we just have too wait and see what happens next in terms for the NMA'S Release for that year.
peoples in vietnam still dislike with 737max..........and thats why there are no 737max are in serviece in vietnam now
I think Boeing 737-800
@@duongthu6737 Too old and not suitable for short runway application at airports like Con Dao and Dien Bien Phu.
Dòng đó cũ r, không còn được sản xuất mới và không phù hợp để hoạt động tại các sân bay có đường băng ngắn như Côn Đảo và Điện Biên Phủ.
@@duongthu6737 That type first flew in February 1997, more than 25 years ago. And the production line is closed in 2019.
Loại máy bay đó bay lần đầu vào tháng 2/1997, tức là từ hơn 25 năm trước
Vietnam Airlines is for me one of the best arilines there is. I did fly for.the first time with VNA around 15 years ago, and honestly, is has been only improving since then. Service is excellent, aircrafts are great, almost no delays, all I can ask for VNA to improve is, Lotus Lounge, that is it.
One thing also worth mentioning is, that their A321neo's look like they have no "cabin flex option". Something you see very rarely! Would be interesting why that is.
Have never taken other Vietnamese carriers' business class, but what I can tell is VNA's A321 business class feels rather dated. IFE is not a problem or available (given that the only route I have flown it in my life, SGN-BMV, is just 40mins long, I once tried to pull out the IFE screen when I was young only to be told to stow it haha), but the seat controls are manual and I'd appreciate a refresh. I think the A321neos are also fitted with the same seats (but my memory is hazy.)
The staff, however, are really good at what they do. Even though VNA has been through financial trouble recently they always worked normally. I never got the impression that the airline was struggling.
Such a nice looking livery. I hear their supposed to be pretty good, I plan on flying London to Saigon at some point to test them out.
I'm quite surprised that more airlines are not ordering the Embraer jets. If they decided to choose that type, they would get great discounts, and the delivery would be a lot sooner than the A220. Of course there may be some available for leasing too
MAS should look into this fleet modernization, this is such an example for airlines to expand. Hope they'll have a brighter future
isn’t ATR working on the next generation replacement for the current one? of course that could be quite a few years down the line, maybe leasing some E-jets would be a good solution
the Vietnamese full service carrier has a well sorted fleet, a efficient mix of wide body jets & narrow body jets . . . the airline could do with a fleet of 18 brand new A350-900 ULR & 22 B787-10 . . . the A220-300 regional jet should be the apt replacement for the propeller driven ATR 72-500 . . .
The A220-100 does a better job to replace the ATR 72 than the -300 because of capacity and range as well as take off and landing distance.
Wow I never expected a video about VNA! VNA is the only Vietnamese airline in an alliance (skyteam) so it’s the only viable viet airline to take imo
Awesome Video!!!!
They have a great long haul business product. had the pleasure of a SYD-SGN-SYD in 2019 and the service was fantastic.
Can you make a video about LOT Polish Airlines fleet?
This is the best airline livery out there right? Right?
Vietnam Airlines should definitely pick the A220 as a replacement for the ATR as it has more capacity in a 3-2 layout as opposed to a 2-2 layout on the e190. Vietnam airlines don’t need the extra range that the E Jet family provides for regional flights. The A220, although it will take a bit longer to land and takeoff, will still fit into the smaller airports since they are getting upgraded, and will fit in perfectly with the already airbus orientated fleet.
Great video as usual. The A350 livery is the best imo. Currently VNA is parking their neos (dunno why)
i'm in Love with vietnam airlines !
10:26 Since they need both small regional aircrafts and medium narrow-bodies, It'd make more sense to just buy them all from Airbus, as they sell both of these types. Ordering in larger quantities from a single company should give them more discounts (I think.)
Vietnamese here, I agree with what you're saying. It's nothing hard to understand why Vietnam Airlines is the flag carrier of our country :)
Duh… because it’s mostly owned by the government.
The flagship carrier of my people!
A220-100 is perfect solution for an old ATR 72 replacement
I traveled once I loved it ❤️
finally i have seen our country flag carrier’s fleet video ❤️
A220-100/300 is a brilliant regional option given the airlines fleet/network profile.
I recently flew Vietnam Airlines and was very impressed with the service. 90% SQ service at 70% the cost :)
I'm glad to know you've had a good time with Vietnam Airlines. We wish to welcome you back on board anytime soon.
@@raymondvictor9386 thanks mate. Can’t wait to try the A350
They have a Premium Economy class on long haul widebodies, which is excellent.
Basically like all major carriers. So it’s nothing special.
@@chosenone5536 Some are better than others, Cathay for example. Many major carriers still don't offer a PE class on all routes either.
Take it you've never experienced the Viet PE product then, going by your comment.
@@jammiedodger629 I flew ana, Japan, United, aa, and Vietnam pe for international flights. All of them are basically the same to me. Didn’t use Cathy over 4 years. They don’t have many flight from USA to Asia.
@@chosenone5536 Oh I see, fair comment. I found Cathay PE better than EVA, and Viet PE on par with Cathay.
I was told that PE is the gateway drug to Business! :)
Don't forget that Volaris still flies some A320neos that are usually Vietnam Airlines jets
Maybe A35K would a nice addition or a338neo
I hope the airline take delivery of the A320neos sometime soon, since before they poached out all of their newly built jets.
Some of them have went to volaris...
A220-100 for regional services? Or the embraer E jet
There's no use for them in Asian countries. The big population of Asian countries allowed airlines to use large narrow body like A320 and B737 profitably all year long. Other than that, they would use Propeller on smaller airports that jets can't reach.
Not many airlines in Asia use regional jets, so maintenance would be expensive!
@@nntflow7058 in fact they need some aircraft like max 7 or a220 to maximize the profit and expand network
@@quantrannguyen3152 No. Maximizing profit in Asia means higher passenger count. Not smaller aircraft.
@@nntflow7058 *take off and landing distance*
@@heidirabenau511 A220-300, A320neo and A321neo got similar take off and landing distance.
6,200ft, 6,400ft and 6,522 ft respectively.
E195-E2 use around 6,460 ft of runway.
So....
I think A320neos would replace Vietnam Airlines ATR-72's soon. I have seen pictures of those A320neos flying test flights.
Vietnam have a plenty of small airports that A320neo family can’t land there, so it can’t be a replacement for Atr72, now Vietnam airlines is considering some options like A220, E jet e2 (E190-2) and Crj 900
Really??? I have never seen them flying,...
Love you, sunday reading
Would love to try this airline one day!
Hope they goo for A220 To replass ATR72
I love Vietnam's Airbus dominated fleet including the 787
The service was not so impressive compared to other airlines in the same rank but overall it was worth the money.
Yup The Airbus A220 Family will do really well for the ATR72-600'S Turboprops Replacements which will be a good move for Vietnam Airlines also The A320Ceos can be Replaced by The A220 Family can replace them too or A320Neos.
Where to buy a ticket from RDU airport
A220s to replace the ATRs?
Can you do this kind of video for Finnair fleet?
With the financial loss of nearly 1 billion USD during the covid, I think modernize the fleet has to wait. There are many other issues awaiting to be resolved within the Airlines but I believe they will make a full recovery in very near future.
Fleet of Garuda Indonesia too please, next content
Thanks you
God, if only we could get the "big three" airlines here in the states to the same standards.
A220-100 and A220-300 hands down best opition for replacement for the atr72s e190s and 195s are older platforms and not the most efficient.
I don't think VNA is expanding its fleet anytime soon as they lost a chunk of market when China is still closed and some from Russia. That explained how they tried to diversify with routes to India but India is even poorer than VN. Right now I think they\ll try to maintain the domestic market and increasing international routes back to pre-covid. Still don't understand how they ruled out eastern European as there are plenty of Vietnamese in Czech Republic, Poland and Berlin like Bamboo Airways planned.
Tubroprop planes should make a comeback. Hopefully it can be quieter
I think the best replacement for the ATR72 would be the airbus a220-100
I think they should replace the ATR’s with newer ATR’S
There is a long wait on the 220 so if they want it soon, it won't be that.
Vietnam has certainly rebounded.
I hope they stick with Airbus narrowbodies
So lemme guess, the thumbnail plane are b787 Airbus a350-900
And a320-100
The best Airline should be rated 5⭐️not 4
A220...that is the good replacement....
Go for Airbus A380.
Airbus 220 it what they must have! Havet flown with this airline.
Great air craft Great Hostess, just need on time departures and no cancellations of flights 😑
Oh i from VietNam
I fly vietjet for domestic flight.
One of the best government airlines I ever try!
Do Taiwan’s EVA Air and China Airlines !!!!!!!🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼
Pls used A220 no Boeing plz
Vietnam Airlines shall purchase Embraer Planes.
❤
After all those Boeing insidents why would any airlines buy a Boeing aircraft
Especially the flying coffin... 737 max

Elbe what 😅🤣 Flugzeugwerke? Flight thing works ;) we better practice that pronunciation again.
The service of this airlines is very bad and the fare is way more than other asian airlines.
