      Late reply, but, I agree, this bike has been around in our family for awhile. I learned how to ride on it and so did my son. We have now moved up to 400s. We are currently selling our 250 because we have no room in our stable for this pony.

    picking up my GZ250 tomorrow, my first motorcycle!! it has about 10k miles on it so ill probably be looking to do some maintenance as well! this video seems like a good place to start! fortunately these bikes dont seem to have a whole lot going on, so i would believe most of the work to be fairly straightforward. as a car guy, i know that 10 minute jobs often turn into multi-hour jobs, but these little bikes just look so dang simple!

      Congrats on the new bike. I got mine with 2k on it and since it sat for 10 years it needed a lot of TLC. The first thing i found when i starred riding was the clear fuel line was cracked and started leaking. Definatly replace that. I had to change my spark plug every oil change for some reason. 3-5k miles. The OEM is very cheap, under 5.00. You are correct, these bikes are so simple and easy to work on. I too was a long term car guy and i found the bikes to be the same as a car except shaped diffeeently. And of course the 250 has no water. If your experienced with cars you will do great with yours. Great first bike, my son learned to ride on it too. If you keep it around 50mph you could get 60-70mpg. It has peppy first gear but after that it shows its CC rating lol. I now ride a 2019 Kawasaki Vulcan LT 900. I had to step up. Have a great time and ride safe my two wheeled brother.

      @@cobravids Wow thanks for a quick reply! the bike im getting has been ridden every season for at least the last couple of years, so it should be in fairly decent shape. i just like to freshen things up on any vehicle i buy just so i know exactly when things have been fixed/replaced and that way i know when it needs to be done next, as opposed to guessing or relying on the previous owner who may or may not remember when things were taken care of last. i will definitely keep an eye out on the clear fuel line. i will also probably change the spark plug and air filter. i personally know nothing about carburetors however, so they have always seemed a bit daunting to me. but i will be careful and follow as many instructional videos as i can for everything i decide to work on with this bike! i dont plan on taking it on the highway anytime soon either. im not a fan of highways in cars! Fuel tank flush.
      Fuel line replacement.
      Doing all this will bring the bike back to safe conditions. Really.check out the fork seals. If the outer "dust cover" seal looks crack replace them. If you push the forks down and they are moist when they come back up you will need to do an overhaul. I'm sure there are more I will thi nk of later, if so I will return to add them.

Its a good gamble especially since the only thing that really goes out on these is the head gasket which is very simple to do. No water. You "could" take a drill with 1/4 drill bit and drill out the lock tumbler and turn the key over like that. OR, take the VIN/SERIAL number and go to a susuki dealer and see if they can cut you a key. I know my kawasakis came with a key code for this such thing. Once you do get it running then you can worry about spending the money for new lock tumbler. The scary thing is buying from someone you dont know is they may be hiding the key and the fact its blown. So your right, it is a gamble.

      This should be an easy job. Pretty straight forward. As with any bike the only issue i see is fiddling with the cables inside the box they go into up on the handle bars. Is your not working or sticky? You can try putting some lubrication down one side of the cable and just working it in and out. This could be done with the cable mostly installed. Just remove it from the habdlebar mount and then hold it uoright and dribvle like break free or other penetrating lubricant and work the cable in and out to get it down. Gravity helps here. Hope this helps.

    HELP 2 things, most importantly, same as some others, the bike turns over fine (replaced battery) I got it running after pulling the carb and cleaning it out, now it wont fire, it'll turn over but wont catch/fire now. The plug is only a year old and I rebuilt the carb completely last year. Any ideas?? Second, what tires are you running. I had a heck of a time finding tires for mine. All I could read was Dunlap...

    • @cobravids
      @cobravids  4 года назад

      First off tires. I used Dunlop too. Jpcycles is a decent place for parts. They have online chat that is helpful finding parts. You can use tubeless tires on there as well as long as you have the right size and good tubes.
      The fire, just in case, remember to prime the carb first. This got me one of the times I had my carbs off and until I prime for some reason it wouldnt fire. Next I would make sure that you have the choke screwed into carb correctly a d fully. This could leak and not allow proper vacuum to bring fuel down. You could spray starting or carb cleaner into the airbox to see if it catches and fires. If not I would remove the spark plug wire and stick a screw driver in the plug and hold it to a good ground and crank the engine. If you get a nice spark then you know that's good. Being that you had the carb apart I would stick with inspecting fuel flow to start. Try those ideas then get back go us. I'll help you out until you get her running.

    • @cobravids
      @cobravids  4 года назад

      Also, you may want to remove the bowl again to see if there is fuel in there if you dont get it running. Sometimes when the carb dries out a bad float needle valve will stick to the seal and not open up.

      I know it sounds silly, have you checked the idle screws? Are they actually moving the throttle in and out? Check the choke valves, you may have a leak/plug that is causing it to act like the choke is on. Some chokes choke air and some choke fuel, I cant rememer which this bike does. I would also look into the float, if the float is stuck open it could be allowing too much fuel to flow into throttle body. There are several different things that could cause this, mainly it is getting too much fuel into the system which causes it to act as if you were throttling it up. Take a close look at this and get back to us. The carb is easy to remove and the needle valve is cheap enough to swap out. Do a good cleaning while your in there.

      @cobravids  4 года назад +1

      It could be a couple things. I would start at the easiest part. Check the spark plug, mine kept backing out. Check the gap setting. While you have that out check compression. One thing that these have issues with is carburetor. Check jets to make sure they are open and not clogged. Use a small wire, guitar strings work great, to clear them out. Make sure all the o rings and other rubber parts are in good shape. In another video I did I showed how to adjust the air fuel mixture screw. Remove the petcock and disassemble to make sure it is not clogged up. Theres a screen inside the tank that can get plugged. Also make sure the small hose going from petcock to the carburetor has no holes or cracks. If I think of anything else I will add it. I would start there and work inward. Adjusting the valves could help tune it in too. Let me know what you find out.

      The first thing I would suggest is determining why the exhaust came off. Did it blow off or loosen up. The bike should run fine without the exhaust as they are pretty much free flowing. The first thing to test would be compression. That is everything on these bikes. It is difficult to get a hose on the head, you will have to remove the tank for ease of access. Check the compression and come back with the results. You should see 90 - 120. That should be a range of operation. Some will run on a little less but that's where mine ran. @cobravids  3 года назад

      @@TheNitin661 Compression is where I would go. There are some 2 stroke engines that require the resistance of exhaust to run, but this one is not. Once you find out compression everything should sink in. If you cannot check compression you can check for fuel and spark. Just remove the spark up wire and hold it close to a ground while cranking. May have to use a screwdriver shoved in there for contact. Then you can remove the hose going from petcock to carb. Blow through the nipple of the carb to check to see if the float opens. Get back to us when you have tested these. If no spark or no fuel pouring out of that hose or plugged needle valve that's your prob.

    Hello cobra vids I have a question(well a few where does the little black tube that on the right side of the carb go to also why I’m asking is that I have gz250 ‘05 and it’s only running on choke when ever I take off the choke or slowly throttle it it immediately dies if I throttle it aggressively all the way it just BRAAPPPP’S and has a possibility of dieing when I do it I have a a theory is it possible that I put the little piece in the middle of the carb( the one that’s in goes in the middle with a long pin sorry don’t really know the terminology ) I would love a quick response the suspense is killing and I would like to avoid going to the mechanic and then charging 200$ for a job the could cost 20$-50$ if anything

      Hang in there, I just recorded a short video I am going to post on my channel describing all the tubes and doing my best to show you where they go. I got close ups so you can see more of it, AND I gave you a few other things to look at. I also would suggest doing a compression check just to rule that out. Expect the post in about a half hour.

    hello! i just bought a 2008 gz250 almost a month ago and i notice in the cold (about 50-60 degrees) my gz250 has some struggles keeping its idle. my idle screw is very high leaving the bike sounding like its being revved about halfway which is terrible. my bike has 3400 miles and ive been told i need to adjust my carb. so far ive loved all these videos since there isnt much information i can find on this bike besides the owners manual. I would like to know where do you get replacement parts since i have only found universal parts for it, also where can i get those awesome saddle bags. Thank you! keep these up, very helpful!

      Thank you for commenting. I love my little 250. I ride it to work a lot. I do notice in the cold mine does some odd things like not having power and cant get up over 60. When I think of struggling idle I would think you would need to do a serious carb cleaning. If you have clogging jets i would think the cold would make it worst. I have a video that I'm about to post that covers the carb cleaning. I didnt find much on my 250 either which made me decide to post everything i did to it. Also have you replaced the air filter? And I know it sounds odd with only 3500 miles but being a 2008 I bet that spark plug is original, imagine all these years it sat with that plug. I would replace it, the filter, if not already, and do a good carb clean. The jets are removable with a flat head and best cleaned out with tiny drill bits or guitar strings. The tiniest blockage can cause havoc. As for my saddle "boxes" I got those from ebay. 50.00. And they were incredibly hard to install. They are not a factory fit and I had to do a lot of work. I should have posted that but since it wasnt factory I decided not to. And for parts, I use 2wheelpro.com i think it's called. OEM. Let me know if you have any more questions, I enjoy helping others. My 250 has 11,000 miles now. It has been a reliable bike even considering the few things that has gone on with it. Also, have you tried lowering the idle screw and add about 1/4 choke? Sometimes that will even things out.

    I know it's gonna sound bad, I've had my GZ250 in storage over 10 years now. I'm pretty sure ima have to do a complete overhaul of the entire bike. Where would you recommend starting out and how can I get her to run super smooth? Thanks man, I really appreciate your help.

      That dont sound bad, hey listen, when I bought my bike it had onliy 2,000 miles on it. It sat in someones garage for 17 years. All I had to do was replace the fuel line and clean the carbs. Dont panic just yet, these GZ250's are pretty indistructable. What I would do is just drain any old fuel out, take a flashlight and look inside take to make sure that it is not rusty. That will cause you all kinds of problems if it is. Then check the fuel line for cracks. While you have the fuel line off checking it refill the tank with fresh fuel and take the small vacuum line off the carb and suck on it to see if fuel comes out of the fuel line. That will tell you the petcock is working. Then go through and remove every single conection you can find and clean with either electronics cleaner or a fine piece of sand paper. Mainly the ground and battery connections. Remove the spark plug and replace it, they are only a couple bucks and will help you out. While the spark plug is out put a little Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinder while you do the rest. Make sure the battery is strong and fully charged. A good battery should sit without a load at about 12.8-13. Check the oil to make sure it is clean enough. Dont change it just yet if it looks decent, oil was in the ground for millions of years so a few years in the bike wont hurt much unless it gets moisture or other contaminates in it. I would change it once you get it running, then worry about tuning it in once you have fesh oil. Then I would give it a start, You may have to play with the air fuel mixture and/or idle controls to fine tune our engine. If I think of anthing else I will reply again. I have a like to a PDF service manuel if your interested in that too. Most people already have that one. Come back and let me know how it goes.

      Hey thanks so much for this comment, checking out several of these lil guys at a police auction in April, all 6000 miles definitely been sitting for years. I have no experience with motorcycles and this will help! Thanks again and I will probably be on this video again soon, haha!

      @@danielmacbride525 I worked on just about every thing on this bike. Let me know if you have any questions. If you buy one the first thing you should do is drain gas and do a good teardown cleaning of the carb. They tend to plug up with varnish fuel. I had to do this on mine. Sat 15 years ran a couple times and only had 2,000 on it. The jets were crusty. I used a guitar string to clear them out. Good luck and yes these are great little first time bikes. I regret selling mine. I just had no room to store her with all my new additions. Riding gets addictive, better then crack. Lol

      These were from ebay. They took some creative mounting as they were so called universal. But after a little while I was able to get them pretty solid. I'll look for the link and get back to you.
