Should've mentioned that when composing the shot and using the rule of thirds that the eyes go on the top line.
I love this format, you guys are being very consistent with your roles. For the most part, I come to your channel for tips/advice/tutorials. I go to Film Riot, Corridor Digital, and Linus Tech Tips for Education/Entertainment. Please continue keeping your episodes short, to the point, and informative. While the humor is minimal in your episodes, I think it is for the best... again, here for info not entertainment. I appreciate you guys finding a lane and sticking to it. "Keep Working Hard" - Tristan of TriFlix Films
+TriFlix Films thanks TriFlix. Always nice to be referenced alongside Film Riot, Corridor and Linus! While we hope to be generally entertaining, our focus is always on being useful. :)
Well you guys are succeeding at your goal. Again, I don't mean to say you aren't entertaining... it's just that I think focusing consistent videos similar to this is your niche. I like the current format of your web series and support you :)
Wow, we surprisingly used all of these in our summer project, VAMPED! Should mention the use of a doly as well, we find it hard to navigate and maneuver in some circumstances. Great videos on this channel btw, it should turn into a regular tutorial channel! We use all Hitfilm software atm.
+VisioNox great to hear! Thanks.
Very helpful tips. Thank you for this video. You guys are amazing.
Well thanks Ankit!

Hey Guyz u r doing well. The Camera Angle Techniques Really helped me a lot for my future projects
Great video. Thanks for the tips.
Very good....as always
This really helps thank you
Thanks guys, this was really interesting!
Loved it. I knew it all already but it amazing what you forget about and need to be reminded of from time to time. Back to basics fantastic. Next time maybe you can do sound and lighting or have you already doen that ?
Nice tips folks! I love your videos, don't stop making them!
+pepepemariano we don't plan to stop! :)

Looking for videos for students that 1. did not have inappropriate film material used examples. 2 explained how to create a dialogue scene in a clear manner. 3. was not selling an editing program 4. included a female presenter. You guys were it! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
- Javert
That was very helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome!

Good tips! thank you!

Very helpful shots
Glad it was helpful!
Nice basics.
Great tips, but I was hoping to find more about how to make the cuts, how to move from one angle to the other. What does the actors do? When does the camera moves? If you have a video about that which I did not find that would be great
Roy Weinstein That’s exactly what I was looking for.
Fantastic and quick !! (y)
very good job
Nice... I wish there was an example on how to shoot dialogue scenes with only one camera. Do the actors play it twice and you film from one side then the other? etc... :)
5-6 take on each actor sometimes but i love using one camera though time consuming but awesome.
Use coverage method. Actors will need to repeat lines for different angles. But dont hesitate. Be in control as a director should be.
Good tips with visual.
This help alot
I would have liked for you to cover also audio dialogue recording, in my opinion that part is more tricky than the visual part.
good tips
Great tips! What about recording sound when shoting a dialog. Is lav mic good (hiden from the camera), or is better to use shotgun mic?
+AV films it will depend on the specifics of the scene and, of course, on the equipment you have. A lot of the time having a boom mic above the actors is best, but that might not be possible depending on your camera angle. In practise you'll be switching technique frequently depending on the setup of the scene. And, of course, some dialogue might have to be done in ADR, if conditions on set are unfavorable (eg too much background noise).
+HitFilm Oh, thanks! Currently my budget is 0 haha. I've just ordered my first lav mic (Aputure A.lav), because I need to shot an interview or let's say more of an promo, but I don't have any good microhone. Hope a little lavaliere will save my ass :) Thanks again and keep up the great work! It's very helpful.
We also answered your question in this tutorial to help out our users - thanks for asking it! ruclips.net/video/NyYIkPf4qdY/видео.html
Hi can you please suggest me any tutorial in deep which can show how to do exact color correction. For background, foreground & master individually or to get real film look color correction, cause we do by using color correction wheel in hitfilm but I'm having messed up it doesn't give the look I want.
thank you
Nice tips
That's it? A thought that fiming dialogs is the hardest part of filming.
+Doctor Vitas as with any filmmaking topic, you could write an entire book on it. :) We've covered the essentials here - if you understand these rules, you'll be able to create coherent dialogue scenes which the audience will be able to follow. Going from there to the cafe scene in Heat between Pacino and De Niro requires a lot of work and finessing of technique.
Similarly, creating technically correct images is the first step, but it doesn't mean you're immediately an Oscar-worthy cinematographer.
Great tips

Nice
How many cameras are used in tip no. 2 ???
And how shoot that scene ??
Plzzz reply
How do you get that blurry shoulder effect on the over the shoulder shot? Just change focus? Or lense? I'm new to film so any help would be great :)
That shallow depth of field is created by the camera settings. Open up the aperture as wide as you can (small numbers are wider), And avoid wide angle lenses. If your camera has a zoom lens, then it will help to zoom all the way in, and get as far away as necessary to frame the shot.
HitFilm thank you :) I have a zoom lens and I have to get so far away to make a good shot it's ridiculous :(
That's why they build movie sets with walls that move, so they can get the camera farther away. Your other option is to switch to a lens with a larger aperture.
HitFilm I think I'll just save up a bit and get a new camera then. :)
Is the blur effect the same with depth of field or different then the zoom lense one?
Depth of field is the term for the range of the scene from the closest point that is in focus to the farthest point that is in focus. It is controlled by your lens's focal length and aperture. Usually video camera lenses, which are too small to have a really large aperture, will only be able to achieve shallow depth of field by getting far away and zooming way in. (small aperture, long focal length). If you get a lens with a larger aperture, then you can get closer and retain the same shallow depth of field.
"and don't forget tooo.... subscribe!" Hahaha
This was really great, Just dled your software and subscribed and didn't expect film making tips. I have one script for a short film mainly involving dialogue and the cinematography will be very important. You gave nice tips and summed up the basics nicely.
I'd like to add that you CAN break the 180 degree rule IF you move between the two characters with the camera to get another angle. Ever since I learned about the rule I've seen it practiced in almost every single film, only broken by what I just mentioned. It's really neat knowing these ins and outs you never knew before.
+David McClellan Be careful friend, learning film is like taking the pill in the matrix. Once you know the truth... you will analyze everything you watch until you can no longer enjoy movies, because you are picking them apart subconsciously haha.
TriFlix Films I had that very fear when I first started learning film making, but I'm glad to say it hasn't happened....yet! :-D
+David McClelland glad to be of help, David!
I have a question, when I shoot a dialogue scene with two people, do I have to move my lights and the camers I use everytime when the other person speaks, so when they interact? Or can / should I record the complete speach of one person at once and then go to the other? Thanks!
I'd suggest recording the conversation entirely from one side, then move all the equipment and have them do it again while recording from the other side.
Very nice tips. Do you typically have to do the same scene over and over for each camera move or can you film just each actor's line while that actor is talking and then move the camera to film the other actor? What is the best way?
It's better to film the whole conversation from one side, then move the camera and do it again. Filming it line-by-line won't feel natural for the actors.

Thank you for the advise
I liked the video
Can you guy's teach us how to make a clip like the message from General Zod to the world in Man of Steel or anything else as preparations for Dawn of Justice?
i have a ohter yt channel with a friend but wat video format do i need?
here is a question not covered in these tutorials. How long do you do each take per angle?
If I have 10 pages. Do I do the whole ten pages in wide shot... then the whole ten pages for ever other shots or do I get selective according to my story boards. isn't that considered editing in camera which is a no-no?
I don't think you would know until you try it out. Or story boards. Yah.
It depends on how long you want the shot to last. People usually don't shoot an intense closeup for an entire scene. Editing in camera is fine, so long as you're certain you know you won't be missing anything.
Hi HitFilm! I really enjoy your videos. I need help. I have to do a film with my whole class, we decided it will be a criminal film and will shoot mostly outside. We have two good DSLRs but non of us has a microphone. What do you you think we should do? Can we get a good aoudio from a smartphone or the dsrls or we need to buy a microphone? Its just for one film and i want to hear your opinion. If possible give me some ideas for cheap microphones that might do the job.
Thanks in advance keep up with the good videos! :)
+kamen traikov Much as we would like to say that you can get good audio from a smartphone or the DSLR's, (which may be true if you were inside), you are likely to just hear noise and wind when shooting outside. As having bad audio is one of the things that immediately makes films look 'amateur', we would recommend investing in a really good mic. We personally use a rode mic which is about £50 and does a wonderful job. If you'd like some more suggestions, do consider posting on the forums where we have thousands of filmmakers who would be able to help!
Best thing to do in the meantime is do a test run - take the equipment you have at the moment outside and do a bit of filming to see what quality you get. Thanks for the question!
when you editing with hitfilm can you use media files frome the sony DSC-WX500
+Tycho Krone It depends which file format you are trying to import. As long as it meets our supported formats, you will be able to import them: hitfilm.com/faqs/view/51
+HitFilm oke thanks
Ps i came from the Nederlands so sorry for the bad english
how do you synchronize audio in hitfilm and hitfilm express?
+Dante David Méndez Chávez there's no automated syncing, so you will need to use the timeline waveform to align the audio with on-screen action. Syncing features have been requested a lot and are on the wishlist!
Of course it helps if you have ACTORS who know how to SPEAK!!!
I swear, the whole discipline of Theatrical diction seems to have been washed away by “methody” acting teachers who can’t stage-speak themselves and think it’s a “reality” virtue and not just lazy incompetence!
Pace, Character, Clarity so clean that you can mess with it and still be understood! And - most of all - know what you are TALKING about within the context of the story, the character and the moment of the scene!
Then the cinematographer merely has to shoot the voice and reactions and the audio guy needs only to get clean sounds… the rest can be done in post.
I tried to download. Hit film 3 express and it says " this installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor." What do I do??! Please reply!
+Jacob Belanio Productions It sounds like you might be running a 32-bit computer. HitFilm requires a 64-bit system. Contact our support team if you'd like more help: hitfilm.com/questions/submit
I have only 1 camera.. It's probably point 4 and 5 which is not really explain by you guys...
Should i shoot 1st angle till the line both actor finished, then continue to retake another, another, and another angle and repeat the same dialogue??
Lookslike consuming more times,, or maybe any tips from u guys?
Best to film from one angle for the whole conversation. It gives you more flexibility in editing and makes the dialogue sound more natural.
- Javert (FXhome Staff)
im realy releaved when you said that 1 camera can also be enough ;)
Now I get the 180 degree rule. I am an absolute beginner so this helped.
All my videos keep lagging when i upload them. I heard i need to render the video? Im new to this and need help. Im using a sony cybershot dsc-hx90v vlogging camera and will be editing mostly vlogs.
+Daniel Dolorez when you say 'upload', do you mean when you upload them to RUclips? Or are you referring to when you import videos into HitFilm?
+HitFilm to hitfilm during trying to edit
+Daniel Dolorez you can transcode them to a different format prior to editing (you can find some discussion on the forum here: hitfilm.com/forum/discussion/38403/smoothest-format-for-editing), or you can use the proxying feature (right click the video in the media panel and choose the proxy option, which will create a fast performing version.
Dialogue? Eek, I'll pass. Montage please! :P
+Digital Blast gotta have a montage.
Quick tips- just adequate
but how do you switch from one character to th other when you only have 1 camera? ( and keep them acting withouth having to wait for you to move)
You'll have to shoot the same scene a number of times from different angles if you only have one camera.
- Oli (HitFilm Staff)
HitFilm how would this go upon to look?
did not really understand tip #1...could u please elaborate..
Deja Vu. I see these basic principles every time I turn on the TV. Here a little bit of the why and how.

Hit film is not working on my PC core i5
There may be a number of other things affecting the performance. Please check your software meets the specs listed here: hitfilm.com/express/specs
If so you can contact our technical support team for further assistance: hitfilm.com/ask
- Oli (HitFilm Staff)
what if you only have one camera?
+yamaan93 I had this same question. I think you're supposed to record all the dialogue from one angle and then all the dialogue from the other angle.
um what if make a slight change from one camera to another. also it might be obvious
+yamaan93 well that's where the practice comes into play but I've found its actually a lot easier if you use the rule of thirds to line up both of the shots
+Converse Minecraft Absolutely - the rule of thirds really helps here. As well as (as we said in the video) using the same lens, camera and lighting to ensure that your shots look the same.
+HitFilm also, shoot ALL of the dialogue for Angle 1 before switching to Angle 2. Don't keep changing the camera for every single take.
TubeTotaal!
An OTS is not necessary
i have expres
Wow, you guys look like you just went to a funeral. Probably just the lighting or something.
