Sometimes but it wasnt a real problem, its not much good for big dry hops, I used to dry hop through the top. The Fermzilla is better for big dry hops. My Fermentasaurus is past its testing date so has been retired for now, but the PET looks fine. Cheers!
The Home Brew Network do you now use the fermzilla as your main fermenter? I am looking if I’m getting the fermentasaurus, fermzilla or just a glass carboy.
Brilliant video Gash, you showed and commented on exactly what I was wanting to see. Amazing to see how big those clumps of yeast are that were actively rising up. Can't see shit in an opaque fermenting bucket. Cheers
Another great video Gav. It's a pity the pressure gauge wasn't a bit more accurate. I'm wondering if I could ferment under pressure in a standard fermenter by sealing up the airlock?
You could, but that totally depends on what sort of fermenter you use, some will take the pressure, some won't, it might be quite a dangerous test! Cheers mate!
Probably upload it tonight............................... bloody hell, just the ferment vid went for 40mins and that was shortened twice..... Thats why I split it in two... Editing has taking hours and hours and hours.... Be glad when its uploaded and over and done with hehehe managed to trim 30mins of Anzac day drunk babble down to a few mins... which will unfortunately feature in Part 2! Trying to get to your stout vid. Jenna was home with a stomach bug during this week so things havent been very pleasant! Cheers mate!
I don't have one of these obviously however i have one suggestion comes from other variations of this setup i have seen on and off since last year(conical fvs i mean).Every other one i saw kept the bottom valve closed or off completely until fermentation was done, valve was then opened to dump the crap into bottle, repeated if necessary to clear, just a suggestion from a thick Irishman but maybe that would have been a better option, might mean less beer waste ? Cheers.
I dont think so, because when you open the valve and the air rushes up, it will stir all that crap back into suspension, yeah some would come straight out but a lot would mix back in??. if I wasnt using the bottle, and connected the nozzle, which I could do then yeah the stuff on the bottom would just come out, but I'd have to release all the pressure too. Cheers!
Yep, thats fine! Some people will shorten the pick up tube to try and avoid the trub and yeast when transferring to another keg, but thats just one way, there are many variations! Cheers!
Hey mate, just a question about brewing under pressure. if the beers is brewed under pressure does that mean that if i transfer it post ferment that it will be carbonated? im a little confused, and im looking to buy a kegmenter in the new year. Cheers Gash.
I haven't had much time or brew many lagers to test it myself, but its quite widely known that it can help especially with lager yeasts, warmer temps for faster ferment and reduced esters and fusels. It's one of the methods big breweries use to brew quicker! I did find it locked in aromas better though some have different ideas on that, the whole fact it can all be done without introducing much oxygen is a real benefit to hoppy beers. scottjanish.com/fermenting-dry-hopping-pressure/ and www.morebeer.com/category/fermenting-pressure.html Cheers!
Gash Slugg cheers :) that's a reassuring read. You have to deal with more heat than us kiwis, but at the moment the Fermentasaurus is at 28 degrees Celsius (I incorrectly assumed it would fit in the fridge). The sort of data I'm trying to find is what sort of pressure would be needed at this temp to result in the productions that are normal for an 18 degree non pressurised brew, if such a thing is even possible at 28 degrees. Seems to be alot of general statements on the web, but little useful data :) I'll keep searching
Might have figured this out by now but if you unscrew the face glass of that pressure guage. While it is hooked to a pressure source at a known pressure. Like when you have your regulator hooked to the keg. You should be able to adjust the small screws on the guage. This is how you change what the needle on the face reads and is how you calibrate the guage.
What would you do if you have foam right at the top of fermentasaurus? I am having the active phase of fermentation, but don't have spunding valve same as you. I just relieve fermenter manually through the relieve valve) cheers
hmm thats usually ok. One thing is if it's going off like that it shouldnt last long, as in the ferment should be over fairly quick I'd think and that krausen should drop very soon. Cheers! Maybe in the future if you think it might happen again thinkabout getting some fermcap-s that will stop the krausen getting so big. Cheers!
I have an older plastic conical that is opaque. It has a valve above the trub and one at the very bottom. My concern is all the places for bugs to hide in all those valves and fittings.
Trust nothing JIGSAW you should know that! hahaha yeah it's just a fridge shelf with a piece of thin ply on top, but I've had heavier fermenters than that one on it many times. I should build a new one though, it's on the to do list :) Cheers mate
Hi mate. Just bought my Fermentasauris today... put my wort in and it looked exactly the same as yours did. and as I speak its about 3 hours in the fermenter and I have what looks like a blocked butterfly valve going into container. I have a huge amount of protein carried over even though I used Whirfloc... but did no chill in cube and then put into the fermenter.. Hope it clears a bit like yours did. So see how it goes. Great vid mate I make so many mistakes but try and learn as I go. Cheers.
By the way... your thoughts on Robobrew? I brew in Aluminium kettle... and enjoy the day doing it... but thought about getting a Robobrew and see how it goes. Gotta convince the wife I really... need it. Your opinion on the Robobrew?
I think its good for the price! Its not the be all end all, but has its place, I still love my 3V better but if I had to brew on the robobrew every time it wouldn't worry me in the slightest. Its far from perfect, but you pay many thousands of dollars for a braumeister and in the end the beer wont taste any different!
Hi Gash, Don't know if you have done this but i saved my yeast in the collection jar and put it in the fridge. A week later on my next brew , after putting wort in and putting pressure lid on i took the collection jar full of yeast from the fridge and just put it back on the Fermentasaurus at the bottom, opened the butterfly valve slowly and it mixed in (saved adding through the top lid). A few hours later it was going mental. Best way i have used yeast.
That sounds great! I havent got around to using mine much, but will be putting it back in action very soon. Got a few recipes planned for it. Cheers Kev. Thanks for watching mate!
you're welcome mate, you're vids were very helpful, thanks. At the moment i'm brewing an ale in it pressurized at higher temp than normal to see if it finishes quicker without affecting the beer
No I didn't, but I did use whirlfloc and had a 10min steep in the boil kettle so most of the stuff is in the small dead space in the kettle, even though there really isnt much because grain doesn't get into my boil and I use bags/baskets for the hops, the stuff in the fermenter is just proteins that the whirlfloc clumps together, it disappears in 24hrs usually, yeast chow down on it. Cheers!
thank you very much! i'm use bags for hops as well. but it still has some hop in the wort. can I just put protein and rest of hop residue in to fermenter? will this affect the flavour? Thank you in advance!
It's nice to see what's happening inside, can't see nothing through my plastic fermenters. It will be interesting to see if it has more aroma than you regularly fermented beers as nothing has been pushed out of an airlock this time. Cheers
I add my gelatin from the bottom and it clears the troob buildup. After dumping the yeast i can usually pump all the way to the bottom without getting anything.
Yep it was working, just the pressure gauge seemed very different to my CO2 bottle gauge, I haven't tried to test it all again, but its something I will do in the next few days. Cheers!
Cool, mine were from elsewhere, but they seem to look the same as KK ones, KK were out of stock, but that was a couple of months ago when I asked if they had any. Cheers
Ummm not sure that would work that hole is about 4cm wide it would come out fairly fast, you could try I guess! If you have a modern SodaStream bottle around, I think its the same cap/thread/hole size. Cheers mate!
Gash Slugg I have done it. You don't open it full whack. Just put a container under it lower the pressure and slowly crack it. I pulled about 500ml of chunky trub.
Do you have problems with the valve clogging up for the troub jar? And what about scratching the pet, is it holding up so far?
Sometimes but it wasnt a real problem, its not much good for big dry hops, I used to dry hop through the top. The Fermzilla is better for big dry hops. My Fermentasaurus is past its testing date so has been retired for now, but the PET looks fine. Cheers!

really interesting gash! look forward to the next part. looks like it's performing well so far. cheers

Like i said m8 i don't have one of these so i am only going off what i have seen others doing with conical fvs.Cheers.

Just had another thought, I have a spare keg, what are your thoughts on fermenting in the keg and fitting a gauge to the keg ?
Yep, thats fine! Some people will shorten the pick up tube to try and avoid the trub and yeast when transferring to another keg, but thats just one way, there are many variations! Cheers!
thanks for your input mate i will give it a go cheers

Yep will be carbonated cheers!
How much warmer can you supposedly ferment under pressure? Can't find any info on this
I haven't had much time or brew many lagers to test it myself, but its quite widely known that it can help especially with lager yeasts, warmer temps for faster ferment and reduced esters and fusels. I think you should have a look at Dr Hans videos. He brewed a good lager in under 3 days.
Might have figured this out by now but if you unscrew the face glass of that pressure guage. While it is hooked to a pressure source at a known pressure. Like when you have your regulator hooked to the keg. You should be able to adjust the small screws on the guage. It's 2am, went to go to bed but saw that you'd posted another video on this bad boy
Lachlan H Sorry mate. I went to bed and left it uploading. Cheers!
hahah its not your fault mate, its my fault that im so keen on this brew!
hahaha yeah what I wrote didn't sound right :)
What would you do if you have foam right at the top of fermentasaurus? I am having the active phase of fermentation, but don't have spunding valve same as you. I just relieve fermenter manually through the relieve valve) cheers
Wow that must be going off! Not much you can do mate, you could try a get it a bit cooler and it might slow the ferment. What temp are you at now?
Gash Slugg 18.5C mate. Thanks
It's wheat beer with WB06
hmm thats usually ok. One thing is if it's going off like that it shouldnt last long, as in the ferment should be over fairly quick I'd think and that krausen should drop very soon. Cheers! I have an older plastic conical that is opaque. It has a valve above the trub and one at the very bottom. My concern is all the places for bugs to hide in all those valves and fittings.
This uses a butterfly valve which are much easier to clean than others, but yes there is always that little worry! Cheers mate!
Nice Update.
Do you trust that platform the fermenter is standing on? ... looks very suspect?
Trust nothing JIGSAW you should know that! hahaha yeah it's just a fridge shelf with a piece of thin ply on top, but I've had heavier fermenters than that one on it many times. I should build a new one though, it's on the to do list :) Cheers mate

Let me know how it goes mate
hello~ I have a question after watched this video. Did you do filter wort before put it into fermentasaurus? filter protein, hops residue, etc...
So far I think yes it has improved aroma and flavour! Cheers mate!
good video slug looks like its working alright
just ordered one. Cheers Tim
Cheers Tim!
I add my gelatin from the bottom and it clears the troob buildup. After dumping the yeast i can usually pump all the way to the bottom without getting anything.
Another great vid, thanks Gash. Did the spunding valve actually work despite the pressure guage appearing not to?
Yep it was working, just the pressure gauge seemed very different to my CO2 bottle gauge, I haven't tried to test it all again, but its something I will do in the next few days. Cheers!
Thanks Gash, will get one on my next KK order. Cheers
Cool, mine were from elsewhere, but they seem to look the same as KK ones, KK were out of stock, but that was a couple of months ago when I asked if they had any. Cheers
You can remove the bottle and cap it then dump your trub with no bottle, It won't bubble with no bottle attached.
Then replace your full bottle.
Ummm not sure that would work that hole is about 4cm wide it would come out fairly fast, you could try I guess! If you have a modern SodaStream bottle around, I think its the same cap/thread/hole size. Cheers mate!
Gash Slugg
I have done it.
You don't open it full whack.
Just put a container under it lower the pressure and slowly crack it.
I pulled about 500ml of chunky trub.
ahh sorry mate, I miss understood! Cool good to know! That would be very handy!
