Just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. It is still winter here in north central Oklahoma so I am looking forward to spring. I have been retired for three years now and have been able to devote more time to my hobbies. My bonsai trees bring me great joy. I am an early riser and love tending to my many plants and bonsai trees early in the morning. I also have a large vegetable garden to enjoy. Thanks for sharing your bonsai knowledge.

A drought resistant tree for San Diego could be a golden rain.
It's seeds germinate soo easily It's invasive in my backyard in Anaheim. Lots of trees for me to practice on!

Fascinating, as ever, gentle self deprecating humour, lots of tips, encouragement to try non-conventional methods, shapes etc, beautiful trees to look at, who could ask for more. Great video, well done.

John Naka came to a convention sponsored by my club in Fort Worth TX. He did a preliminary styling of two large cedar elms, which he named "The Cowgirl" and "The Cowboy." I was fortunate to receive in lottery "The Cowgirl." Eventually I planted it in my back garden in Dallas. I no longer live there but hope it continues to live in that garden.

From a sustainability perspective, In the uk, where I live, it’s illegal to take even a single seed head from the wild (without the land owners permission). That’s probably a bit extreme in most general cases, but it’s intended to save seeds from endangered plants and the plants themselves. If buying plants, it’s important to ensure you buy from an authorised reputable seller.

Illegal here to take anything from national parks
Allow to take trees out of national forest with a permit

That’s a weird rule. The wind or birds can carried the seeds every where they want besides the landowners. You need to change the laws.

You know digging up trees in the wild I've done that a number of times and cutting off the trees big long tap Root and hoping it survives they don't always respond well they a lot of times I've had them die anyways I don't really dig up trees anymore take small seedlings that I find and leave the old beautiful trees to do their thing

Delightful to hear your stories :D My oldest tree is an alder going on 3 years old that I never expected so I call it my "oopsie" alder. I've tried clip and grow on it, I've practiced wiring on it. It seems indestructible. Almost all my bonsai are babies, but I love growing from seed or gathering scraps. I like learning slowly and trying everything as it comes. If I want to pat myself on the ego, I take a 2 year old thyme plant and make a quick landscape out of it with mini figures. I also enjoy large leaves on bonsai, so the alder and my myrtlewood bay make my style a bit conspicuous in their eccentricity.

Great video!! I have a couple of small elms I dug up (with permission) from an old parking lot’s curb strip. Still amazed they both survived!! My goal this summer is to try getting an air-layer from the biggest tree in the parking lot, as it would take a jack hammer to get it out by the roots!!

What about a Pelargonium Xerophyton or a Sarcocaulon vanderietiae or a Variegated Leafy Cactus (Pereskia Aculeata 'Godseffiana') for the person in the hot zone? Just clip and grow and they make a nice little bonsai for them. Works indoors also. Just some thoughts. I have them and they are really cool. Different.

Thanks for the stories and answering my question. Someone asked about what to grow indoors. May I share? Citrus and ficus, obviously are excellent. With the dry air in winter from indoor heating, I learned to use porous soil that is slow to dry out, and water as infrequently as possible. Most of my indoor plants never need water more than once weekly, and also do not need fertilizer every time to maintain size and health.

Thank you Sir for sharing your experiences and knowledge.
Just wanted to share with you as well….
Years ago when I wanted to start learning bonsai I found an interesting book at a second hand store. It is the book you’ve described by John Yoshio Naka. At the time I wasn’t able to get started on my bonsai journey and The book fell out of my memory.
3 years ago I finally began my journey in bonsai and have been experimenting and learning on my own. I live in northern Cali ( The Valley ) and there’s not a-lot of bonsai going on here. Recently found you and enjoy your time that you give to us, and the methods you teach. Prior to finding you I probably watched every video that Peter Chan of Herons bonsai had to offer. Also I will sit through some of Bonsai Mirai videos but that guy talks way to much and I find off putting.
Fast forward to this Christmas. I’ll bet you can guess what I found. Yes, “Bonsai Techniques” by John Naka. It was inscribed to Ed and Sally. Also says “Welcome to the beautiful world of miniature trees” signed John Yoshi Naka 1977. Also stamped with what I assume is his family seal near his signature. It is a third printing and in perfect condition.
Just though I would share with you as you have shared with me your J.Y.B. Story. Thank you for your time that you share and hope to see you more. Happy new year and all the best in 2024!

I’m using 5000K lights in my bonsai studio. I have about 150 trees and they’re doing just fine. Especially the tropicals and elms. It’s not a perfect solution but during bad extended whether it’s good. I don’t use the expensive lights but at least 100 to 350 equivalent watts.
