Harvey Fierstein, starring on Broadway in the revival of the hit musical, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, remembers writing the show’s libretto and working with composer Jerry Herman plus director Arthur Laurents to put together the 1984 Tony-winning “Best Musical.” He discusses his interpretation in the current production of drag diva, “Albin,” a part he wrote, but never expected to play himself.

Finally an interview where the hosts don’t interrupt.

Not only do they not interrupt, they help make his stories clearer. There are many interviewers who should study this religiously.

“Christmas eggs! Get your Christmas eggs right here! Christmas eggs!”
    Elmo: “Hi!”
    Lightning: “Hello.”
    Elmo: “Who are you?”
Harvey: “Well, I’m the Christmas Bunny!”
Lightning: “No, you’re not. You’re the Easter Bunny.”
Harvey: “Oh, yeah? Then how come I got all these here Christmas eggs?”
Elmo: “Those aren’t Christmas eggs! Those are Easter eggs!”
    Harvey: “Shhh...
Okay, okay, okay. Those are Easter eggs and I’m the Easter Bunny. But it’s usually my season and it’s still Christmas! I gots to move these here eggs! Whaddya say, little fella? How ‘bout a lovely Easter egg for a Christmas present? Oh, it makes a very unique gift!”
    Elmo: “Really?”
Harvey: (Singing) “Buy your friends an Easter egg for Christmas!
Easter eggs are useful as can be.
    Take your Christmas money
    To your local bunny
And you can lay an egg beneath the Christmas tree.
Easter eggs no longer just for Easter.
Now that we’ve got Christmas every day.
    It’s the universal gift.
So give a pal a lift
And buy a Christmas Easter egg today!”
