I think one of the greatest tragedies of the coaster world is that we'll never get to see what a modern day Arrow would look like. I know they were slow to adopt computer-assisted design, but Tennessee Tornado, X2, and Road Runner Express all show what direction they could have continued on if they'd only survived long enough. We'll never get to see an Arrow giga and that hurts so bad

I don't think they were any slower than their competitors at adopting CAD. It was just an expensive proposition in the 70s and 80s, and things worked and sold well despite being created on paper. They were using AutoCAD on PCs by the late 80s at the latest.

Arrow Dynamics really was the pinnacle of coaster innovation for their time. They were THE coaster manufacturer to go to during the 60s through early 90s, and they took risks at every end of the spectrum. Their coasters have such a classic feel we don't get anymore, and I love it. Arrow is probably my second favourite manufacturer behind B&M.

Arrow's greatest innovation is all of the lessons taught to all the other manufacturers.

    • @me-myself-i787
      @me-myself-i787 Год назад +1

@@frankorandle Vekoma didn't do anything to Arrow. It was Arrow's refusal to innovate, as well as their underestimation of the cost of building new rides, which put them out of business.
First, they refused to use force-vector design, allowing B&M and IntAmIn to make smoother, more modern rollercoasters.
Then, they continued using an outdated train design on their suspended coaster, rather than using the more open, Floorless design B&M and Vekoma used. And they refused to make an inverted model with fixed seating and inversions. If they had done so, and given it better restraints than the SLC, then they could have made a good budget alternative to the B&M Invert, similar to what Giovanola did with Anaconda.
But the final nail in the coffin was them underestimating the cost of building X at Magic Mountain, and charging Six Flags less than it cost to build. This is similar to how Giovanola went bankrupt because they underestimated the cost of adding a helix before the mid-course break run on Titan at Over Texas.

Arrow will always be my favorite manufacturer so I absolutely loved this video. Thank you for taking the time to research all these milestones and present them in a fast, but informative manner. By way of speaking of these innovations, you ended up covering many of my all time favorite roller coasters and I was happy to see the Log Flume in there. I also was glad to see the batwing in your honorable mentions sections. I agree that it shouldn't quite crack the top ten but batwings are always a highlight for me on any looping coaster and most people seem to forget that it started with Orient Express. My personal favorite innovation of Arrow's is high on your list and that's the inversion records. They were so far ahead of all the competition with those inversions that for many years they were literally just competing with themselves. My favorite type of coaster is the Hypercoaster, but a close 2nd would be the large-scale, traditional looping coasters. No gimmicks. Just put me in a multi-car train on a track, go up very high, down very fast, and flip me upside down at least 5 times and I'm totally satisfied.
Long live Arrow Dynamics. I've mentioned this before but I figured if I kept writing it maybe more people would talk about it: ACE...Please give "Landmark" status to more Arrow coasters. They were engineering marvels of their time and deserved to be preserved as interactive history.

One thing that amazes me about the Matterhorn is not only did Arrow develop a brand new ride system with tubular rails for it, but the trains also splash through a small pond at the end. Dragon Mountain is a beast of a coaster in general. It's over a mile long with an elevation change of 183' and 4 inversions. The fact that Marineland of all parks has the ride is rather crazy to think about.

I’m proud to call Viper at Darien Lake the first coaster I ever rode with inversions. It is only appropriate that the vertical loop and the first inversion on that coaster is called a tear drop loop because that was mentality as I was about to ride even though I was 12 at the time. Been on a bunch of coasters ever since and I’m fascinated by the history of Arrow Dynamics. X2 is a priority if I make it to California later this year.

In Rollercoaster Tycoon, you can create a chain on interlocking loops that extends as high as the support limit for the coaster. You just need each loop going in the same direction (either all left or all right) and 4 units above the next.

As I see it, Arrow were not the first to bring back the suspended coaster after decades.
In 1974, German aerospace manufacturer Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm built "Alpenflug", a transportable suspended coaster. I don't know if Arrrow were not aware of it when they started working on The Bat, since they basically made the same mistakes that were made 7 years earlier. Unbanked turns. In Alpenflug's case things were even worse than with The Bat, since Alpenflug was scrapped just after 16 days of operation at the Oktoberfest in Munich. So maybe we can credit Arrow for building the first suspended coaster that lasted longer than three weeks... ;-) Interestingly, the original plans that Werner Stengel made had the turns banked, but MBB thought to know better. Needless to say, they were wrong.
When Anton Schwarzkopf was asked about his opinion on the failed attempt that Alpenflug was (keep in mind, the company building it hat no experience whatsoever in building amusement rides), he replied that maybe next time he should attempt building a helicopter (a business that MBB were really successful with).

  • @stellaVista

The suspended coaster (without banked track) was first built by weapons manufacturer MBB (Messerschmidt) for a German showman in 1974. It opened as Alpenflug on Munich´s Oktoberfest in 74 and closed for good a few days later. The lateral forces were much too high for the unbanked track. MBB had built two of those rides (the other was a mirrored design), but both rides were scrapped.
It seems that Arrow didn´t know about this failed attempt...there was no internet back then.
