- Magnificent live rendition of the Antonín Leopold Dvořák adaptation - Going Home. From the live concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, 1958. I neglected to mention that the lyricist for this song was brilliant William Arms Fisher! This wonder is ably accompanied by pianist Alan Booth!

When Dvorak was teaching at the National Conservatory of Music in New York, he insisted that black students be allowed to enroll with no tuition. "The future of this country must be founded upon what are called the Negro melodies," he declared. This magnificent song and performance is a direct of that brilliant foresight,
My very good friend Ronnie (and his wife Margaret) met Robeson (and Big Bill Broonzy and others) and said that he was quite comfortable singing the old Negro spirituals......it's where a lot of our music (folk, jazz, blues and pop) derives.
@@lyndamcardle4123 I met Paul when I WS a child in the Communist Party rooms in Brisbane Australia.
Wow! Dvorak was tuned in to GLORY! The song, the voice - my soul is fed, my heart is full, my spirit hears sounds of home.
It's not about colour it's just a good song
Beautiful idea and deserved.. wonderful to have invited all who desired tuition free indeed.. xo
This is proof positive that a great man who experienced bad things at the hands of an ignorant society can love us all. He wrapped us in thrilling music and held his head up in a dignity that has not been recreated since his days on earth.

One does not have to agree with all of his political views to thoroughly agree with what you wrote, nor find the extreme dignity and respect of this man
Brought me to tears when I was 7 now 72 and the tears trickle.
I am in my 70's & I feel for the young of today who will never hear this voice, this song, & others that this great voice has interpreted. Paul was, & still is, a treasure.
Alan Pat 25 here FDR’s death brought me here to hear this song that was played at his funeral procession

Paul Robeson was my role model, second only to my father. His voice and music are eternally glorious.
For my family, as well. My dad loved Paul Robeson his whole life. Godspeed friend🙏💪🏽🧂🌹
What a soulfully beautiful voice singing an immortal song
He was my role model too
I am a 66 yr old white Englishman and Paul has been my hero since childhood.
This man Paul Robeson had a wonderful voice and super interpretation- no need for huge orchestra or fanciful arrangements- the voice says it all.
And to think his foresight, understanding of his fellow man and personality were even more advanced than his music!!!
Thank the Lord for sending him to us! his talent transcended even his campaign for Black American rights- he was great enough to take on everybody's rights -with some to spare!
you deserve your rest Paul.
+Brian Murphy Many thanks Mr. Murphy! I've always been amazed at the genius that was Paul Robeson. If you've time, please view some of the other clips of Mr. Robeson that I've uploaded. There's little likelihood that any other performer ever had the voice, intellect, talent and charm that Mr. Robeson offered. There was literally nothing he could not do!

Understanding of his fellow man? If you mean full blown communist subversive, well I guess he had that understanding for sure.

Im a 60 year old white Australian I also have loved this since my youth, I also liked your words about this man, you are a human with a good soul, to be given this short time alive is a privledge to love and care for beauty means the heart and brain are in tune.
Paul Robeson was arguably one of the best male singers of all time, and certainly one whose voice will never be forgotten. This is an absolutely gorgeous performance, but the buffering really spoils it. He is the essence of great American singing! His voice and passion give great depth to this hauntingly beautiful hymn from Dvorak's New World Symphony.
Delighted to hear from you, but I'm not taking the bait!
There are, and have been, a multitude of excellent singers in his range. He is but one.

What do you mean "arguably"?
Not only an amazing voice with a fantastic range but wonderful control of it, great sensitivity, passion in performance. Such a shame he perished so young.
Hi N Ch! Thanks for writing! He's one of my favorite performers. I've some other clips with Mr. Robeson; I hope you'll look for them!
I adored him from my youth,rip ❤
Found myself clapping with the audience. Magnificent
I just read a man sung this when the body of president Rooseveld, left Warm Springs, april 1945. very moving.
Paul Robeson was such a multi-talented and accomplished individual!
He cared for all ,came to the U K and they loved him especially the miners who he did much for
An absolute legend of his time , One of the very very best
He should have been treated better and deserved better ,
Nevar will he be forgotten here in the U K,
MY HERO.
A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.
Hi SoulMan1994,
A beautiful tribute indeed! Are these the words or from the writings of a famous bishop/scribe from centuries back? They're very familiar. Anyway, at the end of this clip is the then $0.37 stamp with Mr. R. I wonder what his thoughts would be about this! Given his less than gracious treatment by this country during his lifetime, I think he'd be surprised to have received said honor posthumously.

I've played this tune countless times at funerals. I usually try to imagine my favorite version of a melody
with lyrics as I'm playing on the pipes. From now on it will be this one for "Going Home". We all have a home.
We all have a long journey to endure before arriving. Sometimes if we arrive to soon we're not ready. We're all
going home.
I wish I could hear you play this.
A great talented man who was treated VERY Badly!
His voice makes me think of mahogany, rich, deep, and very beautiful.

Duped by Stalin and all the soviets, into thinking there was no racism in Russia? There were no blacks there except him and his family. He spent those years there, never seeing the suffering of the people, never knowing of the Holodomor or the purges/show trials. How could such a magnificent artist miss the evil surrounding him? Robeson was the greatest bass who ever lived. By some way too. No one compares to the tone, the perfection, and the incredible depth. Basso profundo par excellence! And a wonderful, brave person, who stood up for his beliefs and lost everything in the process - and never backed down. A great man.

Especially in this performance, it sounds as if he's being accompanied by a complete concert orchestra! I have to remind myself that though beautifully played, it's still only a piano. It's as if Mr. Robeson's voice is the balance of the orchestra. Thanks for writing!

Wonderful singer and a great song. I never could get my head around the thought of my racist father who, at the same time admired Paul Robeson's voice. My father had a strange mind set. His racism never rubbed off on me I am pleased to state.

@@toonbear8129 , naw, you're just like his dad. We live in a world of paradoxes and hypocrisy.
Pagan Morph I came to this song as a result of hearing it played at my Grandfather’s funeral today (by his request). He also shared generational racist views (he was almost 91) but loved Paul Robeson and this song, hence choosing it for his funeral. He was the kindest man you’d ever meet, just old fashioned. I miss him so much and this is now in my playlist to listen to when I miss him extra, and I’m feeling lost without him. He hasn’t disappeared, just gone home.
Hey Pagan, why introduce racism into this great song, sung by a great MAN!! You should have more respect for Paul Robeson who was a great man, first and foremost (no matter what his religion, philosophies of life, skin color, etc). And you should have far more respect for your father!! ... Calling him a racist, especially if he is not alive, and not able to defend himself. YOU have a strange "mindset"!! I'll bet he was a greater MAN and father than you'll ever be!! I hope your children have more respect for you in spite of YOUR perceived failings! From your comments, YOU appear racist by the mere fact that you introduce racism into the discussion!!! Wake up, smell the coffee, and get real!!! And never ever again be disrespectful of Paul or your father!!

I´m proud and excited at the same time. I come from Czech Republic. Paul Robeson sings the lyrics to the music of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, it is the New World Symphony.
@@truesoundchris My poor child, are you one of those people who spend hours on the internet passing on what you don't know? Poor child. It doesn't have to be that way if you stop your Russian's behavior and propaganda. Truth, the whole truth, matter. Poor soul.
I certainly agree with you! I think many of his later years had to have been difficult given the way he was treated by our country. I'm sorry he suffered that, yet rejoice in the knowledge that we still revere him as the classical, musical, and oratorical genius that he was! I'm grateful to hear your opinion of the great Mr. Robeson!
I will always admire anyone regardless of creed, colour, conviction or anything else. This man is a wholesome individual in all senses of the words. I grew up to respect myself and others of my peers, but more importantly, those of my elders. He for me is definately one of the greats where singers and humans are concerned in my book. He came to the Welsh Valleys many years ago because he came from a very oppressed background and utterly associated himself with Welsh coal miners, who were used and abused. My grandfather amongst thousands oppressed by wealthy titled 'Over-Lords' who became filthy rich on the 'backs' of others utter and total misery. As an example, I was researching my Welsh family tree and came across a massive Welsh mining disaster whereby over 400 men, boys and girls lost their lives, children as young as 4 years. The wives that were left to count personal cost were told by the coal pit owners that they were not going to be paid anything, BECAUSE their husbands/children DID NOT finish their shift. I know the UK was utterly involved in what is widely known as Slavery and I find that 'henous'. It was here in the UK also, involving it's own people. Wales is known as the 'Land of Song' and Paul sang with our fabulous male voice choirs too. Take a look........
As a child I always wanted to grow and sing with a voice like him.
It's soo beautiful and what an amazing voice!!

Mr. Robeson is definitely an inspiration to all Americans -- a true renaissance man.
Did you know that he even has a Russian heirloom tomato named in his honor? Not easy to find, but those who've grown it say it tastes amazing. Sounds like it does justice to its namesake.
This tugs at the heart strings. What a wonderful voice. Full of pathos and hope.
Some years ago I read this man's biography with deep admiration. A life well lived. And he had connections with Wales and the mining community if I recollect , he was loved and revered by many. Dear Paul Robeson x
I once had the privilege of hearing and seeing Robeson sing in concert at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, ca 1949. He was hosted by the Scottish Miners' Union. I was only 10 at the time but it was an unforgettable experience. It is to the undying shame of the USA that this great man was treated so badly in the land of his birth.
In 'The Snakepit' the patients in a mental institution sing this and it gets to me every time I hear it. Just the contemplation of utter peace for those who suffer in body or mind is a wonderful thing.
Hi Sue Harvey,
I'm so happy to hear from you! I posted this primarily because of the first time I heard it! After Paul, I traced it back to "Snake Pit," then to the "original" by Antonin Dvorak. If there are any living relatives of this man let me express my sadness for the way Mr. Robeson was treated! There was NO excuse for his treatment (other than the usual racial bigotry and hatred). May God look upon him with grace and give him the needed rest in heaven that he deserves.

"Beautiful" is an apt description of his performance! The word that I often think of is "haunting." Not all of us even have the memory of a place called "home." Though many of our "homes" are merely thoughts, at least they're still intact. My thoughts are with those who've no real home to think of. Sorry to be so morbid. Thanks for writing.

What a gift this man was given...and how wonderfully he used it. He brought black and white peoples together in homage to his art. He evoked all the sadness of the world yet also gave us courage to go on....Nothing more to say....he was incredible, beautiful and lives on in our hearts. Thankyou so much for sharing this with us all.
Paul Robeson was so sure in his singing that he can add beautiful little colors to brighten the ends of words-and it makes this song a signature piece for him. Morris Robinson's voice is more opulent and has a higher range, but this makes me feel like he's singing a prayer. Captivating artist and great human!
Makes one want to go somewhere. Paul Robeson's talent will never be equalled in my view! I am never tired of his powerful voice.

You are so right Glyn Wood , America did not appreciate his brilliance, power or heart.I believe that we can use his songs as current protest songs as the times are as bad now as they were then. We were on a forward way but elections caused us to be stopped midway so now we have to begin to fight for our freedoms and our children. This voice and soul were lost on America........
What Bolox! We Gained and Retained Rights with the 2016 election! God Bless a Paul Robeson, but his communist ideology is a part of the dead past.
My father reccomended this to me. It isn't something I would seek out on my own, but dang! What a unique and phenomenal set of pipes! You would never hear something like this on top 40. Which to my way of thinking is a shame...
I am joyfully taken aback.
A truly great man. We don't have these types of people around anymore. He had such talent and dignity.
Lucky enough to see him live at Liverpool (UK). What a dignified man! What sticks in my mind was his smile as he sang - as if he really enjoyed making that sound!!!!
Jason James Peeples and I were in Eugene our first year together. He took me on a lover's walk. He stopped and I heard the most soulful deep rich melodic voice. A little sad. So haunting. I really thought he was possessed by this man. I am a black native americsn who could not believe her ears. I believe it more than ever. He is mine and I am his.
