    When I was 15, I adopted an Amazon who was already 10 years my senior. His poor beak was very much like Toupac's; overgrown, dry, dull, cracked and flaking. His previous owners loved him but had zero idea how to properly care for him so he spent 20 years in a cage too small, on a poor diet, heavy smoking environment, I don't think he was ever bathed. Couldn't really fly since his cage wasn't big enough to allow him to properly flap his wings so they atrophied. Most of his feathers were so ratty and thin, they looked like he had not had a proper moult in over a year.
    My Koko's beak flaked just like Toupac's, took no effort at all to chip away at the dead keratin. Even his poor little feet scales flaked. It took years for Koko to truly recover but he still could not ever fly properly.
    Seeing Toupac in his arrival condition hits so close to home, it's painful. I've been there and it's heartbreaking to see any animal in that condition.
    The improvement in Toupac's condition is like night and day. Good on you for all your hard work.

He responsibly sought out someone more experienced then him to take him in, and the rest is history. It was somewhat neglect but it was never intentional and he was passed off to someone who could take care of him better as soon as humanly possible. Hope that clarifies things :3

    OK, I guess you're right to advocate extreme caution in following what you did - it was pretty experimental and instinctive on your part and possibly a bit risky. BUT - WOW - look at what you achieved. A total transformation from what was a sorry looking, dry and flaky bill to an almost pristine and undeniably BEAUTIFUL Toucan. You continue to work wonders, he looks and sounds very contented and happy. Let's face it, birds are never shy in telling you when they're pissed off!

    Sandpaper isn't as outside the box as you think. I train falcons and sometimes they don't maintain their beak well enough. To keep them from getting overgrown we do something called coping. Using small files to shore their beak up reshape it and get it back to where it's supposed to be. The downside is falcons have to generally be manhandled to do this but are hooded to keep them calm as possible. There aren't hoods designed for parrots or toucans so probably not advised since parrots can also hold a grudge. It seems to have gone very well and he seemed quite cooperative. Great job!

      @cptbfrank 5 лет назад +30

      @@ambiguoususername2966 Parrots are social birds with very very good memories. If you manhandle one it can be mad at you for a while. Depends on personality. The falcons I work with are not social animals at all and since they are hooded when we cast(hold) them, they don't know who did it and since their memory is not as good tend to get over it pretty quickly.
