  • On December 8th 2016 John Glenn died, the first American to orbit the Earth, and the last of the original Mercury 7. I attempted to re-create the Mercury-Atlas Launch vehicle in realistic KSP, flying it around the Earth 3 times while reflecting on John Glenn's life and achievements.

As a Marine myself Colonal John Glenn was one of my heros when I was still enlisted. Just as an little contribution to him i have some information on his military background. Some you have covered in this video. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1965, after twenty-three years in the military, with over fifteen medals and awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. In 1998, while still a sitting senator, he became the oldest person to fly in space, and the only one to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs as crew member of the Discovery space shuttle. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. In his service he flew 149 combat missions being hit by enemy anti aircraft on 12 different occasions.
Semper Fidelis Sir. "If the army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes; they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines." - Marine Corps Hymn

I'm currently reading an alt-history where NASA goes for a space station instead of building the space shuttle, and goes to Mars in the 80's. In it, John Glenn is elected president after running against Ronald Reagan, using the slogan "Do you want a real American hero, or the guy who played one in the movies?"

Fun fact: They actually didn't switch to the Atlas rocket, they reversed to it. The first test flight of a Mercury capsule was performed with an Atlas rocket, but it exploded (also, they had one of their astronauts fly a jet plane parallelly to the rocket and he flew through the explosion like in an action movie). They then switched to the Redstone, which wasn't capable of putting the Mercury capsule in orbit, but was safer. And just if you want to know, it had also been developed for nuclear warheads and when someone messed up some measurements they actually had to grind down around two inches (in diameter) at the widest part of the capsule to make it fit onto the rocket.

    • @FlyingBoxHead
      @FlyingBoxHead 7 лет назад +1

So there's a thing on Atlas called the adapter section (that black 'collar' below the capsule on the Mercury-Atlas before the tankage starts), notice that it's slightly wedge-shaped, it's there for this purpose and it's shape is so to accommodate the Mercury spacecraft's diameter. Also, they had to space the capsule from the LOX tank because of the retro-motor package. Find an internal structure layout of Atlas on google and you'll see why. The thing is literally a giant fuel tank, which is why it's icy and giving off vapor when it's about to launch, as the liquid fuel is loaded/pressurized shortly before; when it's all shiny and beautiful, it's not fueled.
They would have to decrease the diameter of the heat-shield, which is mated to the base of the internal structure, which means changing the geometry of the capsule entirely, so I don't think that the most cost effective method. Convair was told to buckle down sort to speak on quality assurance for the components and systems of the Atlas, so that potential for failure could be decreased specifically for project Mercury (the boosters track-record had to be improved, it was still a relatively new missile), most problems with Atlas were with guidance, something that must be ironed out if they are to achieve orbital flight, guidance is everything. The Redstone was the candidate for the sub-orbital debut flights, the Atlas for the orbital ones (a big power difference obviously). All preliminary testing of the capsule design and escape system was done at wallops island with the Little Joe booster or standalone capsule for LES tests, other boilerplate and fully-furbished unmanned Mercury capsules were tested atop Atlas to integrate the systems.

I thought that the "fireflies" mystery was closed by Astronaut Scott Carpenter on a later mission when he was able to create the effect by banging on the interior of the capsule, which dislodged ice particles from a atmosphere purge valve on the side of the ship. (evidently waste heat containing water vapor from the astronauts own body was vented to space, the water vapor would freeze and build up on the side of the ship near the valve) the ice particles would catch the light of the rising sun and become brilliantly lighted during certain parts of the orbit?
anyway, I read this some place years ago...

Hey Scott, you like to talk about the physics accuracy of video games and movies and the likes sometimes, right?
Could you maybe do a video like that on the TV show 'The Expanse'? (It's on Netflix)
As far as I can tell, the physics in that seem to be insanely accurate. Spaceship decks, for example, aren't oriented parallel to the thrust vector but perpendicular to it so that they can walk around while the ship accelerates. They also turn around their ship and thrust in the opposite direction to brake. For some high-G maneuvers they have to sit in special seats and have some sort of gel inserted into their body to protect their organs. I was blown away when I watched it and noticed all the tiny little nods to physics they managed to put in there. Maybe you could also talk about whether it's possible to do what they did with Ceres (It's in the book, I don't know if it's explained in the show):
They carved tunnels under the surface and then accelerated its spin so fast that they experience about 1/3 G outwards, towards the surface.

RIP John Glenn. As a child of science, I was born on Feb 21 1961, and have always had a fascination with things space related, to realize that the most honorable John Glenn became the 1st to orbit the Earth, basically on my first birthday, really brings home my fascination with all things "space". I remember my parents, feeding my fascination with a "Tasco" 3" refactor telescope, which I almost immediately tore apart, to investigate for myself, the shape of the mirrors, and was never able to put back together... everything I observed resolved into amorphous green blobs. But I eventually, at the ripe old age of 32, indulged my childhood fantasy of things space, and got a proper Celestron 9.25" Reflector, and the heavens were opened to me. I think fondly of Senator Glenn, who on my 1st birthday, so greatly shaped me into the man I am today. Thank you sir, may you rest in peace, knowing that you did more for humanity, than many other notables.

I'm too young to have historically lived the adventures of all these space pioneers, but knowing that some of these men still walks our planet is kind of empowering.
Still, time takes its toll, fewer and fewer remains with us. It's our duty to remember them all, to share the respect to all of those, engineers, technicians, scientists, pilots, astronauts, who allowed the earthlings we are to understand and watch by ourselves the place we have in our universe, and how precious life, peace, knowledge and understanding can be.
May John Glenn fly forever in the history of mankind.

Another point about the Atlas' engine arrangement: It allowed all engines to be ignited at launch. In-flight ignition wasn't really a sure thing in early rocketry, which is also the reason for the booster arrangement on the R-7/Soyuz, and the Soviet preference for hot-staging.

$20 one of those dislikes is that "we didn't land on the moon" loser Glenn beat up.

So the mercury tanks are all still floating around in orbit... I wonder if there will be some space trash de orbiting missions in the future

Since I'm from Ohio, maybe I can be an astronaut too, lol. Nearly all famous astronauts were born and died in my state.

Also what mod are you using for the rocket exhaust effects? Or is that part of realistic KSP?

A bit off topic but could someone provide a mod pack for graphic enhancements for clouds, water, etc?

Yes flights to space are so routine now few know the names of recent astronauts. John Glenn will always be remembered.

Awesome tribute to a genuine hero... imagine being strapped into the opposite end of the business end of one of these massive marvels of aerospace engineering.

Spaceflight is still not 'routine.' Not by any stretch of measure. It is still about 1 in 100 chance you'll die, which is quite... unsettling. Back in the 1960s it was almost 1 in 10 chance. So yes, if you define 'heroes' as people who are advancing the cause of humanity by knowingly exposing themselves to great risks, the early astronaut corps were great heroes, and even today's astronauts still are!

pop5678eye It's probably more meaning that an average person has a higher chance to recognize John Glen's name as opposed to another current astronaut.

He was a Marine, Scott. Never call a Marine a Soldier, especially a Marine like John Glenn.
