Stretching being "more" beneficial before training doesn't really relate to whether or not it's beneficial to do in the morning. What about people who sit in an office for 8 or 10 hours a day before they hit the gym? Too many variables for a simple answer.
Stretching while keeping max Hypertrophy is good before going to sleep, NOT before weight lifting. Stretching for a good functional body is good after lifting weights. I suggest watching movmentbydavid and athleanx
@@alantyndall85 stretches aren't a warm up, though? He's clearly talking about maintaining an overall level of flexibility, which sitting in an office for 8 hours a day will wreck, leading to other problems.
@@deliciousdishes4531 Of course they are a warm up. Unless you mean static stretching, in which case they’re not even that. You could mean mobility drills specifically, which is back to being a warm up.
Doing it constantly even just in the mornings increases your flexibility overall, there is no doubt about it. People that just do stretching workouts are less tight even after not stretching, with time.
No its not. Its literally worthless. Never noticed a difference in flexibility from stretching. 30 years of stretching = I could barely get my fingers past my knees 1 year of lifting weights in stretched positions = fingers touching the floor. Bare minimum is body weight. If you are stretching, and the stretched muscle isn't loaded with you body weight, its a complete waste of life.
Yeah but how long can they go between sessions before they tighten up again? In my experience its only 2-3 days if we're being generous. Whereas if you stretch and temporarily get more ROM before training hard, and then you train at the end ranges, the flexibility gains tend to last between 2 weeks to a month without needing any additional stretching sessions within that time.
@@synergyrevolution2332 You are just wrong. You need to build muscle in stretched positions. That muscle can't just magically disappear. It takes time for your body to break down that muscle. So if you do a 225lb romanian deadlfit with the bar touching your feet, you can go home, play video games for 24 hours straight. Then you can get up off the chair after 24 hours of gaming and the muscles will still be there, allowing you to bend over and touch your toes.
Hopping out of the hot shower is a great time to stretch. I always do deep squats and some shoulder/lower back work. Days when I forget, terrible time at work. Don’t get old it’s not worth it
I feel you. I was doing skating for a bit and my routine took an hour. Pain in the ass… and it wasn’t making me strong either. But holy fuck… It makes me feel new.
I like to stretch before bed, but I do it as a way to just generally relax, especially in my lower back, and to loosen up my legs from standing all day at work etc, I find it very useful and notice my body getting more stiff when I neglect stretching for a few days. That being said, if I'm off work for a week, I don't get as stiff and don't need to stretch as much.
@RDS_Armwrestling same I haven't stretched before bed in a while & get lower 🙃 back pain after lifting sometimes when I stretch before bed it goes away so I need to get back to it
Stretching my hips saved my entire body from misaligned pain. Legit my lowerback, ankles, feet, neck, everything gets fixed when i stretch. Sorry Mike you’re a smart guy but you’re wrong on this one.
He's contradicting himself all the time. If John Meadows came out and said morning stretching is great Mike would be creaming his pants over how insightful he was.
Idk man when i train or stretch or do a mobility activity i feel the effects into at least the next day in terms of power output and fluidity of movement.
Ever since I started putting on a lot of muscle, flexibility has been going down. For example, I can't reach a certain part of my delt, because pec tissue is limiting my reach and the delt has grown. So, maybe stretching could help regain some flexibility? Not sure about that.
I dont hace time to workout in the morninng but doing some light calisthenics and band work for 10-15 min every morning is a game changer for me. I feel amazing the whole morning.
stretching with weights is very good it saved my back. deficit straight leg deadlifts and splits training with resistance makes everything easier with time and consistency you become overall more flexible and athletically mobile.
While you don't need to make it your morning routine, for someone who sits most of the day, small bits of mobility drills throughout the day are very good at keeping the body more fluid and less painful. It is, as you say, a temporary benefit, so it makes sense to repeat the process often rather than being locked into certain positions all the time. Motion is lotion, as they say! (As a desk warrior who has recently not been able to have fulfilling and regular workouts, I definitely value the moments during the day where I move around a bit to loosen things up.)
I do 30 minutes of stretching/yoga every morning. I do this for many reasons: It helps wake me up in the morning, I have a desk job and I like stretching in the morning before I spend most of my day sitting down, I exercise in the evenings and by the morning I'm usually incredibly stiff so stretching really helps, I have ibs and I am often bloated but stretching does ease it, and I find it helps with my exercise overall.
Stretching every other day is absolutely amazing if you want to be flexible and strengthen your joints. Depending on your goals, it's certainly NOT a waste of time for some people. 😁
I used to have horrible low back pumps when regularly pushing heavy squats and deadlifts. I started static stretching 2-3 times a day. I no longer had back pumps.
Is doing stretching in the morning “before the day” mainly about the mental aspect? The feeling of getting lose and helping set yourself up for the day? The physical response will obviously dim quick but the psychological effects as part of a routine last longer
…Hmm 🤨 Dr Mike. I always like what you have to say, but when it comes to mobility and body awareness I’m not sure you’re the one who should critique 😆. But I will continue liking every single one of your videos I watch.
I stretch every morning, it absolutely makes a difference for me throughout the day, regardless whether I happen to be sitting or more active that day.
Hey Mike, on an unrelated topic, could you maybe make a shorts video on how to jump higher? Can't find a reliable source on the internet cos everybody says different
Performance wise, yes. But consistent stretching help loosen tight muscles from overuse or posture **and lubricate your fascia, which get inflamed and stiff from inactivity. It’s just great for mobility and well-being, especially people suffering from certain disabilities or trauma.
It depends. I have a chronic ache and tightness in my hip from breaking it in a car accident years ago. Stretching it every day in the morning compounds the effectiveness over days so by the 10th day, everything is so loose that i dont even have to stretch. But still do.
Usually don’t disagree but stretching in the morning is good for those who sit down mostly for work plus it just improves and maintain your flexibility as you get older.
Man I've gotten out of bed before and put out my entire back just reaching up for my protein powder... A few times as well when I'm shaking it. I think he's onto something for us rigid bros out here
I jog in the morning, then stretch a little during, and do a full routine afterwards. Don’t really feel like I can stretch cold muscles, and I never noticed any improvements until I started jogging first
Although I dont know how often Dr. Mike does BJJ (which i imagine has a few components of flexibility involved) but if he does it consistently 2x a week combined with training I would bet that this helps keep him flexible. I can only speak anecdeotally I only lift 4x a week but stretching in the morning has certainly helped me.
Completley ignore the long term effect. I gaurantee that someone who does some stretches in the morning, after a month would be more flexible even after a day since from last stretching.

When I wake up, I can't touch my toes. I do 29 minutes of stretching before I can touch my head to my shins. Now if I just go about My day without stretching, I have some initial back pain, but eventually I warm up to where I'm 90% of that flexibility without stretching. Working out at night I'm already all warmed up.
I move in the morning to fire up my basic systems and it feels great, I move better all day. It's like a mini light work out that is challenging but short and not counterproductively tiring. Then if I lift heavy later I'll still warm up properly but I'm halfway there. Disagree here Mike my friend, but you still say plenty of good other stuff sometimes
20 minutes of yoga daily immensely improves how I feel mentally and physically. That paired with 30 min of zone 2 cardio walking on the inclined treadmill 5 days/week helps me have a stable mood throughout the week, especially at work I am on my feet 50hrs a week. I tried just doing 10/12k steps and only resistance training, it's not it. The time investment is 100% worth it for me. Maybe dr Mike should give it a try, since he's been very vocal about his mental health issues and wanting to crash out when he's blasting grams of gear.
