- It's that boy, or should we say, Bot! It's Astro Bot, here to save the day!
On a journey through space, an evil alien blocks Astro's way, steals their CPU, and breaks their PS5 Ship. And all the bots are scattered all over space, from different planets, and different galaxies. It's up to Astro to save the bots, rebuild the ship, and stop the alien from doing any more damage!

17:50 That's exactly right, John. Team Asobi didn't have to pay any licensing fees to get the cameos. A lot of the companies (especially Capcom as we'll see later) were more than happy to lend their characters. It's implied that the "noticeable" cameos that didn't make the cut were from companies that actually were asking way too much for licensing fees. You can probably guess one of them.
You're also right that the director of Days Gone (1st party game btw so its not like they had to ask) was annoyed that his character Deacon was a bot. He's been pretty asshurt about that game underperforming for years now.
Which is a shame because from what I've heard from people who do play it, it's actually solid.
@@HappyPotat. It’s not bad and the concept of the game is cool. The story sucks though and it feels half baked but I think it’s because the development process had some issues, but I don’t remember so well.

Never saw much of Astro Bot, but I'm gonna guess that you're hinting at Sora since they gotta go through both Square Enix and Disney for him to be a cameo.
funny enough there were 2 bots that were introduced in the official picture showing off all the bots and the 2 were fat princess and sweet tooth sadly they were not in the game

Same honestly I LOVE Ratchet & Clank, it’s one of my favorite series OF ALL TIME! I’ve played every game in the series multiple times, and even watched the 2016 movie on release. It was driving me crazy that they didn’t know Rivet from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart!
Finally the SGB play a new modern 3D platformer with a quirky funny little orb protagonist with many powers and a goal of rescuing little guys..

Heck, the first boss is a gorilla and the final boss is an alien (...well, minus the nightmare fuel associated with Elfilis).
Also you sorta fight a tree except you just let him grow from a seedling and sucks you up like Whispy hey the Trunk of Funk is just the Deku Tree as the inside looks a lot like the one from OoT.

@@kizunechao279Well a lot of the bosses and enemies are carryovers from Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which released in 2018 on PSVR 4 YEARS before Kirby And The Forgotten Land! A lot of those ideas and mechanics originated from the previous two Astro Bot titles, which both released before forgotten land.

What's crazy is that the PS5 is actually on pace to outsell the PS4. Apparently people are buying it even without a ton of exclusives.
With this winning GOTY, I hope this can inspire Sony and Microsoft to make more neat little family friendly games like this, because Nintendo definitely needs competition in that market
We hope this game also shows Sony to actually use some of their ips more. Like seriously, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal, Medievil, ect. But no let's released The Last of Us 2 again

It's 50/50 with Sony, but Microsoft will just buy someone else's IP and then stuff it in a drawer somewhere and let it collect dust.

To go back even further, Astro Bot made his debut in 2013 on the PS4 called The Playroom which showcased a variety of augmented reality mini games.
We think they talked about thay, but thought it was a PS3 game instead of a PS4 game
To those who say that Astro Bot is an "advertisement" to buy Playstation products, that's basically like saying that Super Smash Bros. is an "ad," when clearly both of those respective games were made from tender love and compassion for all of their respective franchises that they were referencing.

I’d favor your interpretation more, because 90% of the games referenced haven’t had a new installment in 10 years. There’s so many series that should come back but just aren’t.

The best thing about watching SGB play this game is they'll be able to correctly guess the majority of character bots.
Eagerly awaiting Greg to see some of the RPG characters that show, there was one in particular near the end that had me amazed that it'd be referenced at all!

I assumed Johnny was playing and didn't realize he wasn't till 18 minutes in
This game is like a mixed between Super Mario Galaxy and Kirby & The Forgotten Land. Your exploring space like worlds, limited yet tightly controls, have some sort of spin attack & traversing into the next galaxy like Mario Galaxy. But you also have stuff similar to Kirby & Forgotten Land like a world map for main & secret levels, robots to rescue to open up new levels & upgrade hub worlds similar to Waddle Dees, power-ups that sorta behaves like Mouthful Mode, a gotcha machine and even the first & second boss is a tree & a ape. This game pays alot of homage to not just Sony's history, but 3D platformering games in general.
Also the bots breaking down the lock/Door like the Dees before a Boss.

I would describe the power ups in this game like Animal buddies in the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, because they can all do different things. Glad to see you guys playing this
Ah, Astro Bot. The game that remind of you of all these IPs we ain’t getting games on. Kind of like Smash Bros in a way…or you know, PS All Stars to be more appropriate. Also a decent looking platformer to go with it.
I say it’s more than “decent” considering it won game of the year! Astro Bot was my favorite game of 2024, It’s such a great, solid, fun platformer. All of the power-ups are fun and enjoyable to use, and make for some fun level design, every level feels different and distinct from one another constantly introducing new ideas and mechanics. And it’s an EXTREMELY gorgeous and charming game, there’s sooo much attention to detail and little funny easter eggs in nearly every corner of every level. And the sheer amount of physics objects and fluid simulation is impressive, without almost any frame rate drops!
Astro Bot is just a great game in its own right even without the nostalgia and callbacks to old franchises. All the cameo bots are nice and welcomed, but for me those are just the sprinklers on top of an already delicious cake! I feel like it’s reductive to reduce this game down to; “cameos with a decent game on top.” That’s doing the game a MASSIVE disservice, because it’s actually an amazing game in its own right!

Astro Bot wasn’t my favorite game from last year, but it does a lot of things right. It’s clearly a labor of love and deserves the praise it’s gotten.

Johnny, if you think the Oddworld Abe's duology is strange, I recommend the side-game, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath.
Set in Western Mudos, you play as a bounty hunter looking for Moolah (The ACTUAL name for the game's currency, BTW) for an operation to save his life. I'll leave that as the plot summary to avoid spoilers.

Oh, those Playstation coins in Astro's Playroom and Bot are mostly Gotcha Machines for rare chance of a puzzle peace, a character itself or the items for the character, or a useless item on a empty soda can.
I swear everyone misses that first bot in the pool.
Oh boy, now I wanna see Johnny play Kirby Mass Attack cuz it's basically Kirby Lemmings, but I don't want him to go through the pain of flicking the stylus for several hours straight.
Or 100% each level with all Coins and three starring which is a bit much.

Another series that comes to mind like this is the Ys series.
It's a very standard JRPG series that changes it's formula with subsequent games but doesn't add gimmicks to make it a bloated kind of unique.

There are four 'secret' bots. The game detects your save file from Astro's Playroom, and if you've rescued the four special update bots (an Ape Escape ape, Lady Maria from Bloodborne, a racing game driver, and an astronaut with heterochromia) from that game that were added for the run-up to this game coming out, it adds them to this game.
Never seen this game until now with you guys and wow I didn’t realize how good it was just off of first impressions 😅

They want you to get all bots in the game as the climb to the final trial needs all of them or you can miss three.
Jigsaw pieces again you need to collect them all to open the way to said final trial.

John, I went through the same thing price wise, but I was not thinking of getting the PS5 during the pandemic. I worked at GameStop during that time and my coworkers practically bullied me to get one. We sold some with bundles reaching the $900 mark. 3 games, 2 controllers, $50 GameStop gift card and PlayStation plus before the revamp.
Astrobot started with The Playroom which was a glorified tech demo for the PlayStation4 camera then Astro VR For the PlayStation4 VR headset then in 2020 Astro Playroom hit the scene it was a PlayStation5 tech demo to show off the power of the DualSense controller then in 2024 was Astrobot which was an anniversary game
People keep bringing up The Playroom, then Astro Bot: Rescue Mission for origin points (the bots themselves and the main character and game plan, respectively).
There was the playroom vr between them, though. That was the origin of Captain Astro (the name of the playable Astro Bot) in a small platforming section. Rescue mission is a full flesh version of that platforming idea, and the rest is history.
Also, fun fact, the alien villain of this game is heavily implied to be the same as a particular villain in the playroom vr in another section of that game, mostly because the developer of that particular section, double fine, noticed the similarities, posted about it, and sony responded in a "so you noticed" kind of way, iirc.
Finally, _proof the PS5 has games._
Kicking Off the New Year with Last year's Game of the Year, and it was a well deserved Game of the Year award. After I played Astro's Playroom, I was hooked on Minute 1 when they announced this game. It controls well, the Gimmick Power Ups are fun and unintrusive, the Level design is stellar, the Boss Fights are fantastic, The Easter Eggs are all amazing. The only real complaints I would have with this game outside of certain franchises not being represented would probably boil down to some of those bonus levels being a little too challenging for my liking (even if that's the whole point of them) and that I feel the game could've used more Flashback levels (the Ape Escape, God of War, Uncharted, Loco Roco, & Horizon levels). Those Levels were the best ones in the game and I wish there were more than 5 of them, imagine a Metal Gear Solid themed Level, or Sly Cooper Flashback Stage.
Also, I'm unfortunately gonna have to fight Matt on Days Gone. I won't sit here and say it was the best game ever made but it did not suck at all, I fell in love with that a lot more than I thought I would and got the Platinum Trophy on my 1st Playthrough. But yeah to Answer John's question, John Garvin, The Director of Days Gone was the guy complaining about Deacon St. John being turned into a Bot. That Dude has had a Stick up his Ass about Days Gone underperforming and he was blaming everyone else instead of himself. He blamed Sony for cancelling the Sequel, Critics who gave the game poor reviews saying they were "Woke Critics who couldn't handle a Gruff White Guy staring at his wife's ass.", and Gamers for the game's poor sales numbers, saying "If you love a game, then buy it at full fucking price. Don't complain about your game not getting a sequel if you didn't."
I may be paraphrasing a little but I am not making this up, he said all of this on Twitter and in a Podcast with David Jaffe. Dude can't seem to accept that Days Gone underperformed because it was in development for a while so people forgot about it, it came out the same year as God of War 2018, Marvel's Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, & Super Smash Bros. Ultimate so it was overshadowed, It was a Full Priced Open World Zombie Game that didn't look too different from The Last of Us so People weren't super interested, and a lot of people who did play it had to deal with a very slow beginning and quite a few Day 1 Glitches. I only played the game because it was part of the PS+ Collection when the PS5 was first released so I didn't have to pay anything and because the Main Character, Deacon St. John, was played by Sam Witwer, the guy who played Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (he was also voicing Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars The Clone Wars, Rebels, and a bunch of other Star Wars Shows and Games). So Yeah, even if I ended up loving Days Gone, The Creative Director didn't do a good job making it stick out amongst the crowd and he needs to take a God Damn Chill Pill.

This game drove me mad with its cameos. To the point of having a detailed spreadsheet of who is in the game, if one could play it on modern hardware, And what game they come from. Among other things.

Edit: Also to add to the early convo about the PS5 console and not enough “interest” so to say is that by the time that PS5s were more available and easier to get, every single company kept releasing games for the PS4 because they were so afraid of not having that pre-existing player base. So the problem became “why should I buy a PS5 when the game is coming out on PS4, the console that I already have”. Add on top of that that the console hasn’t gone down in price at all since launch *and* the current economy and you just found out why this console gen in general is failing in comparison to last gen.

The PS3 didn't have a tech demo for Astro Bot Elliot, you're thinking of The Playroom on PS4 which was the tech demo that featured AR bots that waddled like toddlers because Team Asobi, then known as Asobi Team, wondered how to make the AR bots cute and what they came up with was making them waddle like toddlers which then led to The Playroom VR with mini games like Robot Rescue followed by Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Astro's Playroom, and now Astro Bot
The playroom came with the PS4 camera and had astro bot in it
I just got a ps5 and seen some good reviews for this game I might have to play it
I got my PS5 purely out of luck. One day, my mom went to Best Buy to buy the new phone, but they didn't have them anymore. So she decided to ask if they still had any PS5s. Luck was on our side, cause they only one left, and surprisingly is was preordered by someone else. But for some reason, that person decide to cancel their order of the console, and with my money ( my mom had my bank card) she decided to buy it right then and there (technically I bought it, since it was my money) for me. I was only little upset because I just only had the console with no games, until I remembered that Astro's Playroom was already on the console.
