"We are not gamers. We are developers."
And that is why you fail
Remember when it used to be "By gamers. For gamers."?
@@amadeusagripino6862 I know this isn't really related but I heard the term "gamer" came from "gambler", so all the gacha stuff makes sense 😂 (even if it's really bad)
Agreed. Back when gaming was in it's golden age the main reason why is because the "developers" were gamers themselves. They had the passion required to make entertaining fun games. Much like how movie makers of the past had the passion & vision to make great movies unlike the hacks of today.
Part of this is because of things like the XNA framework, Unity, or Unreal. These were frameworks that lowered the bar for 'developers' to be able to make games with less experience and passion. You need passion to make quality products.
The companies order lunch for them everyday too. Even as a low level call of duty qa tester I got free lunch ordered every single day. "darwinist jungles"
The ESG money is running out!
And the ESG money is running out because free money from the Fed has been cut off after 15 years of QE/ZIRP. It's not just ESG money. It's also all the forms of venture capital (VC) that are gone as well. The market has been levitating on fake money sloshing around for a decade and a half. To be clear, this is about AAA. Indie and AA will be fine. Nothing I'm looking forward to is from big studios.

@@mikecampos1193 Yes buddy big studios are going to take a hit, that's exactly what I meant when I said AAA, buddy. Buddy.
There are only a select few upcoming AAA games I am looking forward to in the future. And those games are; Pragmata, Perfect Dark and Everwild. That’s it in terms of AAA games. As they exit the industry they will leave behind a whole stack of pronoun employees that you'll need to make sure do not manage to migrate to the Indies.
Otherwise they will bring their ruinous ways with them.
@@sixmillionisimpossible it’s okay you have blind glasses now
i'd call it more of a triple A crash than gaming crash, indie industry is going to keep trucking on
I would agree, but then I guess with this logic the first video game crash wasn't really a video game crash, just an atari crash since it was atari games that was affected by this, not computer games.
I feel most indies and most Japanese companies will survive. The West will be the most affected by this. Especially the ones eating up ESG/DEI and seeing their games sell less thus they lose a lot of money.
Yeah I even have a couple early access games in my steam library that have announced that they are hiring more into the team. While AAA is shrinking, indie is growing. It's about time.
same thing with music, probably film soon, too
Indie and Retro are bound to boom soon for sure.
The difference between this and the 80s is this year it isn't just the Videogame Industry that is crashing!
And this time, it's being done on purpose
Both right. On purpose, and for all forms of entertainment.
Free money (effective 0% interest rates) cannot be separated from the growth of the entire tech industry. We had artificially low interest rates for over two decades, most of these companies didn't exist the last time a business had to prove they could survive without endless cost-free borrowing. The entire silicon valley VC business model doesn't work when money costs money, so expect a lot more of these contractions and closures.
Under appreciated facts
we dont need that 1001th mobile game or app though. it gonna sting a bit then new dawn opens.
Please tell me this means Bethesda will quit updating Fallout 4 and Skyrim...
Were not that lucky
I refuse to mod until they stop. I'm tired of the updates that cause the scripts to fail. Beyond Reach, VIGILANT, UNSLAAD, Sofia, Auri, etc you'll be missed.
Umm no.... skyrim stealth archer super combo edition is going to be announced for Christmas 2024 at a price tag of 79.99 all it adds is an extra 20 skill points to the stealth and archer trees 3 new bow skins for each bow and a now house with a proper archery range with standard targets and monster targets. For some reason the monster targets will be glitched and always a mirror of the player... it's not a bug its a feature. Oh and a handful of quests that were cut before and never completed that is for he community to do and Tod to make money off of later
Fingers crossed!
Once, it was said that two things are certain in life - death and taxes.
This has since been proven to be expanded to "death, taxes, and Skyrim getting a new release every year"
"We don't want Darwinist jungles" is pretty explicitly just "We don't want a meritocracy"- And that tells you all you need to know about the situation.
The gaming industry is going through what Hollywood is.
Too many studios chased the streaming bubble and making filler content versus making quality content and pimping it out to one or two streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
And a lot of them are in serious financial trouble. As far as I’m concerned on both counts, tough.
This is reaping what you sow.
It is reaping what they sow, but I still mourn the existence of the apparatus of say, Hollywood, to create quality stuff.
It's actually what's called a humiliation ritual. They destroy the things people love, for all to see..and ironically, they've been doing it in a way that gets the target to destroy the thing they love on their own. It's all been done, on purpose, to demoralize the masses. It's effectively scientific, in the way that the social engineering is done.
MTX, DLC and charging premium for a game that's unfinished and sections locked behind paywall, and D31 is what is going to hurt the gaming industry
Right, just look at the 2010's, lots of companies trying to get a piece of the Fortnite pie, not realizing everyone that plays live service games are not going to replace their favorite game for another.
@@SammEater I still don't think most of the big companies have realized this, yet.

At least they know how to code already...
Spotify - became the only radio station posing as record store,
Look where the "music" industry is now.
Netflix - became the only TV station posing as a Blockbuster store,
Look at where Hollywood is at now.
GamePass - wants to be the only GameStop and pose as Steam,
Look at where it's heading.
This trend of turning every physical product into a physically intangible subscription service is economically unsustainable.
I would say Triple-A is in trouble, which is great! Indie is thriving... as long as they stay away from greedy publishers.
its shocking to me how BAD Starfield was.
Yup. I played it for quite awhile too for the first few months after its release, pretty sure I have a hundred or so hours. But when I look at No Mans Sky (NMS) & ALL the crap that you can do, vs Starfield & what you can't, I just shake my head. Even the only thing that Starfield had over NMS, which was ship building, is now moot, since you can do that in NMS now.
Sad to say, but just like the original Star Wars trilogy was G. Lucas' "lightning in a bottle". I think Skyrim was Bethesda's "lightning in a bottle". In both cases, never to be repeated.
It's made by woke devs
Wait till TES 6 finally comes out. I guarantee it'll be a flop.

And Bethesda itself gets the axe next year. This is the scythe of the hyprinflationary dollar as well. It is time for a new age of new studios.
They got what they voted for. Hyperinflation and no mean tweets.
What makes you say Bethesda will be gone?
@@lashed1980 Unless they get their act together and or the economy does an abrupt turn they will be next. Just look at the Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony necropolis. The companies who made Ultima, Deus Ex, and Fallout originally can be found there.

@@lashed1980 That is the crux of it. They make Elder Scrolls Six great again. Or they make the axe great again. Up to them.

The gong has sounded for the AAA industry
Helldivers had a bigger impact on the AAA scene then most people are talking about.
Arrowhead produced a great game that players need to work together to progress.
and they did it with a $40 price tag. That price point and popularity shattered the $70+ talking point coming from AAA
That and Helldivers 2
The main (or at least a major) reason for mass layoffs is the change in the US Fed raising the rate up from zero. Zero interest essentially meant free money for people who already have a lot of money, b/c free loans. When the rate went up, it was inevitable for FAILING BUSINESSES to be shut down. So, you're right, these businesses were not successful, but the rate hike forced the hand of those floating these bad businesses.
was this also coinciding early 1980s? Im waiting to see if madness of world goes away via that money side getting more normal.
It's like everyone seems to forget that we have a huge stockpile of nearly 40 years of games to choose from that are either free through emulation or are available at a fraction of the cost of modern games. If the servers for the modern warfare and Black ops series were still up, that would eventually be the only reason I would be paying for game pass
Indeed and lots of old games to replay over and over again ^^
Again everything is happening I said back in 2015 that there would be another video game crash if the game industry kept pushing toward the inevitable.
I've seen the writings on the walls and look where we are.
If you never learned from history you are doomed to repeat it and the industry crash should happen to humble itself from its mistakes and delusion.
Many people say "Oh the video game crash won't happen again", I am a crazy person.
How wrong they are as many continue to talk about the first crash and refuse to admit that it will happen again in the future.
I also had the same sentiments for years particularly back when micro transactions took off in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s when devs would release unfinished games.
You do know the 'first game crash' only happened in America right? I know the gaming industry is more centralized now but if Predominantly American triple A studio fold other 'arguably better' things will fill the void.
I don’t think newer studios are going to get the memo as we might hope. History is just as likely to repeat itself for the worst and we don’t know if we are truly safe.
I have a big backlog of games to fall back on!
Hi-Fi Rush's studio shuttering doors makes me sad. They didn't do anything wrong. They just went into business with unscrupulous people. Putting it on Game Pass screwed them over and then Bethesda went and released Starfield, and then decided to cut them out instead of taking the hit themselves.
Absolutely. Xbox didn’t even put enough effort to sell a physical version of it
Bethesda is well known for murdering studios so they can loot the remains. its no surprise their business practices have translated even when being bought by microsoft.
Take one look at the BLOAT in development teams and then also consider that this BLOAT is both interested in, and has the power to enforce, their own job security. That's just about half of the problem. CUT. THE. BLOAT.
2:37 the Bernie Sanders controller 😂😂
Also, why does every game need to be a 300mil techdemo made by 1000 people across 4 different countries? What happened to western games that it basically completely erased AA or smaller games? Remember when DOOM was made by like 10 dudes in an apartment?
Because any new developer entering the industry went to the same colleges as everyone else, had the same professors as everyone else, who all had the same politics, fashion sense, and insipid idol worshipping as everyone else.
If you destroy the working parts, what you get is a broken machine.
A beacon of light from a burning screen. Light up the Night!
They did it to themselves. No sympathy from me.
I just feel bad for the Hi-Fi Rush studio. Everyone else is closer to apathy.
Is it not just the economy sucks and people don't have money for games because they don't even have money for food rent etc?
That's part of it, but far from the full picture.
Gaming is the most cost effective entertainment, by far.
Compare that to the cost of movies.
Part of it but it is also gamers fighting back against the stupid decisions these companies are making.
Its not the only thing, hiw many people would have bought these games anyways?
Most of the money in gaming is not from the lower-income class gamers. It is from the normie-esque casual gamers who work dead end jobs with no family, no kids.
They have enormous expendable income and nothing to spend it on.
See the first week of earnings for Diablo 4 and you'll get a great idea of where the money for AAA comes from. The companies produce slop for an audience that comes home from their worthless job to their disgusting apartment with their worthless after-work life and they play video games or buy music, whichever vice is theirs they ruin that industry.
Been the way for like 50+ years, before I was born the music industry was the one corporations and slop consumers were ruining.
The problem is, you are showing footage of Arkane Lyon. The studio that got shut down was Arkane Austin. I'm sure if you found footage of the Arkane Austin studio, it would look like a darwinist jungle.
Mikami must have know this bs was coming. Hope he can pull a lot of that japanese talent with him on a new studio.
XBOX is simply out of touch with the consumer. That's why they're not growing. Going around and buying up Gaming Studios is not growth. It's the games and the austerity that comes with it owning an XBOX game. 💯
Instead of the awesome "bounty hunting in space" Prey 2, we got whatever Prey 2017 was.

But Prey 2017 was awesome, and so was it's DLC, which is rarer than gold dust. I don't know where this new narrative has come from, but people have always loved Prey 2017. @@facerip2222 Prey 2017 is not a bad game, but to say people were not disappointed that it was the game we got, instead of the incredible looking "bounty hunter in space" Prey 2 is an understatement. Honestly, it should have been given it's own name, and probably would have sold really well.

I own a PS5 and a Series X. Games are long, tedious. Derivative? I hooked up my PS3 and I’m streaming stuff. I forgot how much fun WWE All stars was. Just an example of a game that wasn’t that famous, but compared to the crap that about now, All stars felt like a piece of art.
Video Game Crash 2: Electric Boogaloo! Let's goooo!
It’s a contraction, for sure, especially among AAA publishers. But an industry-wide crash? I’m not seeing it.
AAA is failing and that's OK. Focus on Indies and AA games.
Prey was a great game.
But Arkane Austin really took a tumble with Death Loop and Red Fall.
But Phil Spencer openly lied about not dropping support for these games and studios. Bethesda expanded in the wrong areas. They should have expanded into two or three studios to work on their titles to close the gap between releases. So one works on Elder Scrolls and the other Fallout, then another for Starfield. I'd love a Starfield 2, but they'd have to narrow down the game and add quite a bit more weapons, ship parts, and gear.
By this point Microsoft has more successful special edition controllers than AAA exclusive titles.
The "bedroom coders" (indies) saved Gaming in the 8-bit era. Outside of North America, microcomputers flourished. My first micro was a Commodore 64, and the amount of games released in the UK was massive. The budget titles especially kept the industry and the hobby afloat, as a lot of those budget titles were great. Sure there was a lot of crap, but budget meant budget, usually around 2 or 3 quid, so literal pocket money for a kid at the time. You didn't feel too ripped off as much if you didn't like the game. That's how Codemasters started out, and they're still about all these years later. Then again, so is Activision. Oh, well. Anyway, the point is, a crash was inevitable but I'm not at all worried. The indies saved Gaming before, they'll do it again, where some will eventually replace those AAA studios that will inevitably collapse.
Shinji Makami bailed at the right moment.
Regarding getting burned by microtransactions: look up what Bandai Namco did with Tekken 8. They delayed the MTx shop 1 month after release, reaped the positive reviews and then stealth dropped it on the community.
That's the evil greed we are dealing with. People need to completely stop buying from these offending companies till they close
I’ll push back on the snarky workplace comments Craig made. A company can provide its employees with all the food, energy drinks and free laundering services you would ever want and still be a disgusting, manipulative and awful place to work. Those tend to be the businesses that never want their employees to leave the building. They want your entire life to be at work, and they will psychologically condition you to believe that you owe them far more than your contract states because of all the “nice” things they do for you.
🤔 interesting
a longtime coming. across all industries, karma has come to collect on the bill. and its only beginning. in 10 years time, the landscape will look so entirely different
It is instructive go look at some of that Arkane developer's past posts about DEI. When they were riding high on Peak Woke and the lockdown-induced tech sector boom, he was making some very brave and bold pronouncements.
Now that the money is tight, he's suddenly very afraid of "Darwinian jungles" (read: meritocracy) because he knows that when getting (and keeping) a job goes back to being dependent on actually producing a quality game that people enjoy, he brings nothing of value to the table.
You know, i remember coming home from school on a Friday, popping Rachet: Deadlocked into my PS2, and just going ham all weekend. There was no dlc. No updates. Nothing to pay for, aside from the disk.
That's how games should be.
Kara has to be one of the most endearing streamers I've seen in some time. I remember first seeing her on a Palworld stream with Az.
8:25 If "Immersive Sim" doesn't mean anything, then RPG means even less so and "action" could be literally anything.
I always just assumed it meant the old school sims like tank, helicopter, jet, mech and space games that came with a huge keyboard chart because only 4 keys on your keyboard will NOT be used in the game, every single other key is binded to something.
It's not clear what Microsoft want from their studios. Hi-fi rush feels like the perfect game pass game. Tangoworks is a strange studio because the founder left and even the director of Ghostwire Tokyo left. Surely there is value in that studio? In the end it doesn't really matter if another independent studio grows from the ashes. A lot of these publishers push nonsense on their studios to build a game that follows industry trends rather than making what people want. The problem with Arkane is that their games are very niche, and you can understand why they would close the studio.
Must be pretty chill to sit down to talk about gaming and not really have any idea of what's going on. Dream job, right here.
I respect Razorfist's opinion, but I loved the Dishonored games and Prey.
Deathloop was lazy. It was an interesting idea, but it was basically reusing content over and over.
MS has some pretty crazy advanced A.I. they use in house. My neighbor(s) I would say 75% are MS employees. Two weeks ago we had a little community bbq, and I was asking what they thought the future was with A.I.
His take was that "FANG" is going to push A.I. very hard mush like the auto industry did with robot assembly lines. MS specifically is going all cloud. We will no longer have high powered PC's doing the heavy lifting at the office. We will just subscribe to a monthly use of a portal that gives us all of our programs. Once this is implemented MS will begin laying off. They will be able to run on skeleton crews with A.I. filling the gaps. MS is in the building phase currently. Around 2028-2030 they will have had all their data centers build to have the capacity to go all cloud.
They also realize that A.I. may advance to the point where they will not need huge data centers anymore as programs/hardware become more, and more efficient though A.I. So they are gutting their gaming division, and are using it too see how A.I. make that industry "leaner".
Hmmmm. The mothership's revenue is only up 30%. Something had to be done.
Commodore 64 and Amega great times. My high school even had Apple 2e and that was 1989-90.
When the marketing team runs the company and the product team doesn't.
