Need to clean the drains to get rid of the fruit flies. At work we always spray chemicals down the drain to prevent fruit flies from coming up the drains.
Fruit flies lay their eggs ON the bananas, not in. They can't bore into the part of the banana that we eat because they don't have the equipment, so no worries about eating bugs. Once I lived with Hasidic Jews, and learned to use a light table to find fruit flies (and larvae) and critters in lettuce and salad veggies in order to keep it kosher...sounds crazy I know.
My son had trouble with fruit flies in his apartment. The owner had to call an exterminator. The exterminator found that one of the other tenants was a hoarder and once they cleaned out that apartment they went away.
I like my fruit flies. Seriously. I have a couple of plant pots and now they're living there, and somehow having fruit flies there is gratifying because this tells me the plants are healthy. No clouds, just 2-3 of them at the time. Home bred! 😊
Hi Bradley, coincidentally, I've had the same infestation problem this year and was only able to solve it about a month ago. It was driving me insane and I had to complety empty my pantry and look at everything inside thoroughly. Turns out, in my case, that the bugs (also very small and reddish) were not fruit flies like I thought but a type of fly that feeds on dry goods in your pantry. Dry pasta, flour, rice, etc. The tiny bastards create nests and then multiply like crazy. The nest I found was in a small dry yeast container not used in a long time. It was closed and not food so I thought it was ok and skipped it the first time I inspected the pantry. Best of luck with the bugs and overall too. Hopefully you'll be in the mood to play video games soon.
One trick for bananas is to wash the tops/stems of them when you get home to eliminate fruit flies. Boiling hot water down the drains has also helped us when we have too many tomatoes from the garden one time. Did you hear the news about Sutliff and Mac Baren after being acquired by STG they announced they are closing those operations in Denmark and Virginia? Hopefully we don’t lose too many more good blends, I feel sorry for the people who are losing their jobs at those companies.
That is _so sad_ about Sutliff and Mac Baren. You know things are bad when companies that big and old go down. This industry is dying...it's so sad. The war on tobacco is very real; any tobacco product that comes from within the EU is in danger of disappearing. In Germany, the Bernard snuff mill had been in operation since the 1700s, and recently closed due to _ridiculous_ EU regulations. The only reason we still have English-made tobacco from GH and SG is because of Brexit. /rant
We had a hell of a war against fruit flies when we lived in Puyallup. My wife finally solved the problem by putting out "traps" that had some mixture of vinegar and honey or something similar.
I'm having the same problem with gnats. This is knew for me. I have to idea what to do about it. They are everywhere. I suspect that it has something to do with the weather. In Northern Ohio, it has been crazy warm. In November, we have seen more than one 80 degree day. We are still a bit warm, but we are getting close to average temps. So maybe that means they will be going away soon.
I'm kinda in the same boat with fruit flies. drives me nuts as well. I also see them in the bathroom. I get the feeling its coming from another apartment through the sink drains? Maybe try pluggin the sink holes and tub.
I use dish detergent in a spray bottle and stream from a distance with wasps. It also works on ants and other exoskeleton insects, but I use diatomaceous earth for cockroaches (Ewwww!) But fruit flies? So very vexing!

Check under your fridge for food and pour boiling h2o inside your sink drains, bathroom included! That and buy some traps and use diff baits (vinegar to fresh fruit).

I have the same frustration with these nat flies. But winter is almost here and they are dead. Til late spring. I but my bananas in the microwave fyi. Sealed to protection. 😊
Hey, Bradley. Do you plan on doing a video sharing your thoughts on STG closing the Mac Baren and Sutliff factories? Here's hoping it won't affect HH Old Dark Fired, which is my second favourite blend ever, but you never know with tobacco.
Everyone I know (live in the east coast?) has had an issue with fruit flies this year… not sure where they’re coming from. We’ve all deep cleaned. We have no idea what the hell is causing them. It’s extremely annoying. My parents, my friends, etc. all have them.
Lol, fruit flies aka as fungus gnats…😂. I have tons, especially now, even clouds…. …when I go near my houseplants. I do know where they come from though, the soil in my plants. I have lots of houseplants, so unfortunately they live there, but I don’t think they hurt plants or myself. Smart idea on the bananas, I do the same with avocados, but just leave bananas out.
Those horrible little monsters. Fruit flies are a homebrewer's mortal enemy. Even at work in my office that has no trash or food, they are still in there. They have been horrible since 2021.
There was an Ask Reddit thread years ago where the question asked what was the grossest thing found in a restaurant. If I remember correctly, the top post was about live chickens in the ceiling of a Chinese restaurant pooping on those particle board ceiling tile things. Right below that post was about fruit flies buzzing around the donuts at Tim Hortons. It turned out that they weren’t cleaning the drains enough. In Japan, cockroaches are a problem no matter how much you clean. I’ve had to kill my share of them, and it’s not fun. Black ones are said to be just trying to get out of the heat. But if they are brown, you might have to worry about an infestation.
Once on an NPR program a Nobel Laureate was telling the host how he cultivated generations of fruit flies. He reported that each morning when he entered the lab, he spoke to the fruit flies: "Morning, boys! Did you miss me?" Thought you'd like that.
With respect to the election taking over some people's lives, my wife casually mentioned to a friend yesterday that it had been a "very long week" but she was referring to the time change and our kids' sleep schedules getting all messed up. But the friend just assumed she meant because of the election result and responded with something like "Yeah, it's been a terrible week for our country. I cannot stop crying." And my wife honestly had no idea what she was talking about and had to ask if there had been some sort of tragedy that she may have missed. I just don't understand the people who let politics affect their lives to that extreme degree. As for the fruit flies, yeah it's most likely the bananas, though I feel like they have been getting worse recently. We have bought bananas for years and years and would only occasionally see flies in the house. But over the past couple of months It has almost been non-stop with the little flies buzzing around everywhere.
The segment starting at 4:25 is pure gold! Haha, and sorry to hear about your fruit fly problem. On the election note, I talked to my daughter and explained that sometimes the person you want to win does, and sometimes they don’t-but no matter what, life goes on.
I'm getting buzzed by a gnat as I'm watching this. I'm at a cafe and I've been getting buzzed by this damn thing ever since I got here. I can't get it either and it's been really annoying.
LMAO, wasn't expecting a fruit fly/insect rant, ty. Maybe a less clean neighbor. I don't think not ripe bananas would attract them, so you can leave your bananas in a paper bag on your counter.
Fruit Flys are the most annoying bug out there. I would rather be covered in Grasshoppers that having to swat, constantly at a fruit fly buzzing right in front of my face while Im trying to watch TV. I have no fruit in the house, no peeling in the garbage and nothing that I can think of that would draw them. UREKA I found the source of my fruit flys. My potted plants seem to be a nesting place for them. I have put some product on them hopefully this will take care of them.
How did you know????? I am inundated with fruit flies!! Seriously. Same here, I don't get it! Thank God it's not just me! Invasion of the fruit fly snatchers....
See if they really are fruit flies.... There are certain types of beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) that attack grains and... T. (Fire sticks and mixtures)... And they are very similar to fruit flies.
Except Washington was the only state the Next President didn’t have gains in, so what does that say. As far as Washington is concerned, I’m just grateful I got to go to Seattle in 2011 before it collapsed.
@ we had to listen to the lies of the Liberals for the last 10 years. Finally it got bad enough and the population punished the Liberals for their lies. It’s glorious.
The fruit fly rant is literally one of the best things I’ve seen in years. 🤣🤣🤣
“What do they WANT?!”
No one knows...
Need to clean the drains to get rid of the fruit flies. At work we always spray chemicals down the drain to prevent fruit flies from coming up the drains.
Top tier election coverage.
This should be the uniform standard for all outlets.
Fruit fly larvae are in most bananas when you buy them. Pretty much every time we eat a banana, we're eating fruit fly larvae.
I know. Kinda gross, but harmless.
Fruit flies lay their eggs ON the bananas, not in. They can't bore into the part of the banana that we eat because they don't have the equipment, so no worries about eating bugs. 8:21 Fruit flies in Finland are called banana flies. This year they were bothering me too in september. :)
An appropriate name!

Make a trap by mixing 50/50 vinegar and water and add a couple drops of liquid soap✌️
A small drinking cup is enough

I’m sure I’ll touch on it once it all shakes out.

If I had any house plants, that would make sense!
Re: fruit flies, cleanse your garbage disposal and sink p-trap
Do you have potted plants? You can get swarms of them from the potted soil
Nope. 🤷🏻♂️
Those horrible little monsters. Fruit flies are a homebrewer's mortal enemy. Even at work in my office that has no trash or food, they are still in there. They have been horrible since 2021.

In spite of my little rant, it’s nice to live in a very temperate and mostly pest infestation free place like Washington!
Once on an NPR program a Nobel Laureate was telling the host how he cultivated generations of fruit flies. He reported that each morning when he entered the lab, he spoke to the fruit flies: "Morning, boys! Did you miss me?" Thought you'd like that.
I curse at my fruit flies regularly.
I’ve heard the Tri-Cities has a roach problem. You remind me of the guy from Creepshow. He had a bug problem in his bug proof home. 😉
That doesn't surprise me! Eastern Washington is a lot "buggier" than Western Washington.
Hey Bradley I was thinking about it, maybe fruit fly’s have lives like a video game and whenever they die they just respawn back in your apartment?
It certainly seems like it!
I'm very clean as a single man too, and I too get those damn flies! I always assumed it was from my houseplants because I never buy bananas 🤷🏻♂️
Gotta get that potassium!

This is your privilege talking. It's easy to not pay attention to elections if you're white and straight, I guess
There’s a few articles on the web claiming fruit flies like tobacco. Ive had the same issue, I think they like to swarm my pipes.
Interesting!

Fruit flies can and do come out of your drain traps.
Don’t know if it’s true but when I was a child my mum told me that fruit flies come from within the fruit. It always bothered me!
I've heard that as well!
Sick photo lol

Their aimless, sporadic flight patterns are maddening.
F-ing fruit flies! A glass or little dish with vinegar and a sweet nectar in it will direct them there and they go for a final deep dive of dearth. 😁
