- It's wonderful to be able to sit down at the piano and improvise music off the top of your head! And many people think you need to be a crazily talented musician in order to improvise.
But this isn't true!
With the right guidance and suggestions even beginners can start improving their own piano music. And in this video I'll show you how.
Using influences from Hans Zimmers soundtrack to Interstellar, I'll give certain chord progressions, patterns, techniques, scales and exercises so that by the end of the piano tutorial you'll be able to create your own stunning piano improvisations.

Can you mix and match thirds and sixths, and single note patterns in the same improv. Btw, having so much fun with your teaching. Thank you.
Hi Tim, yes absolutely you can mix and match everything in this tutorial. And the more comfortable you become with the different techniques the easier it will be to do so. Also I’ve included some exercises towards the end that will help you to get used to playing with your right hand over the top of the left hand rhythm patterns.

Hi Ben, I do sometimes include notes or letters in some of my videos, but with it being improvisation there were so many variations. In hindsight I could have included some notation examples though. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Arthur it's been a while but I stumbled upon this and my interest was immediately piqued. As always, you didn't disappoint! As you know I am an advanced player but I really struggle with Improv like a lot of people who have been traditionally trained in the classical realm lol! So thank you, this really does help alleviate anxiety for me when I hear the word improvisation. It's good to see that you're starting to do more advanced-oriented stuff. Yes I am busy, apologies about the pdf. Many people think that I'm improvising is some kind of mysterious musical magic, but I find breaking it down into manageable stages makes it much more accessible when teaching it. I'm pleased you found it helpful! :)
