- I explain this cool DIY notebook that gained popularity in the early 2000s, and show I built my own one.
I first learned of this from @Joe_VanCleave , I'm a big fan of his, worth checking out if you like DIY photography, typewriters, handmade creative solutions etc.

Learning to keep a notebook is useful. But the issue is that people try to do some extremely pretty, high maintenance stuff rather than staying simple. I use a bullet journal and made a habit of taking it out during my work break, which is the only reason I kept it up. It's minimalist and rough, it gets the job done. But I still dropped off after taking a month's holiday and only just started up again about eight months later.
The good thing about a bullet journal is its forgiving, and you can absolutely pick up as you need to without leaving hundreds of blank pages of shame.
There's a balance with prettiness and usefulness for some people. I fully agree that most people on yt haven't found that sweet spot yet haha. Mostly stickers and washi tape for the most part. That being said, a highlighter is all you really need to make things pop enough. Sounds like you have the right idea for you though. Everyone's balance is different.
blown away by the quality of this vid. so much intentionality and uniqueness. big Van Neistat energy. keep it up, boss
Oh wow, this is really good and high quality. I would've assumed this channel had at least 100k subs. Keep up the great work!
One day 🤞🏻 Thanks for the encouragement :)
out of all the pocket notebook videos i've watched recently, yours truly stands out. good work friend!
I love how you go against the grain. So many people just repackage centuries old ideas and act as if they're new and brilliant for habit-tracking and taking daily notes, and it's a disservice to their function as a tool. All it does is set people up for failure when a $40 journal isn't the panacea for all their life's problems.
Solid Video.
I also feel really old because I totally remember Merlin Mann, the internet blog/productivity scene back then, and absolutely carrying a hipster pda for a couple of years.
I used to use those at the time. There was another version where you could layout custom pages and print it out, cut and fold it.
I’ve been using index cards with a binder clip for the last 5-10 years! So so dope, I bring mine with me everywhere!
Thanks
I was alive for it and now that I have been reminded of it, I am going back to the hipster pda. I've been trying all of the other ideas out there and forgot all about this. Thanks for the reminder
lmao excellent video. Perfect satire, excellent editing, a solid, funny ending, and an ultimate idea of "live and let live." Seriously, this is great, keep doing it in whatever form you can.
I got really into the hipster pda at the time (I was in college) and it was really useful. I also got really into Merlin’s podcast (you look nice today) which was equally formative for me.
LOVE your editing dude... Been planning a "these will not save your life" video myself...
Maddeningly good video. Short and packed with visual interest, with a good and relatable message. VERY nice. We will be watching your career with great interest.
Nice to be on the other end of creative rage hahaha Thank you so much, see you on the next one 🙏🏻
Well made video, bravo!
i can smell the passion in this video, beautiful imagery.
Especially that fisheye in the beginning
Very kind, thank you 🙏🏻 Just dropped a new one if you're hungry for more :)
Damn the editing and creative camera work! I really love it! Especially the backlit drilling shot. I bet you put over 3 hours work in for a three minute video and it honestly really payed off. Also really liked the flow of your editing. Nice rhythm.
Yeah absolutely, the ratio of duration of work to final product is immense. Thank you for the kind words :)
Loving the clean editing on this video!
Ayy thanks bro, plenty more cool editing on the channel 😎
sooo good
Great editing
Welcome to the Fold. That was a great time as I’ve gone from paper planners in the 80s to pdas, to the HPDA, and back to my Filofaxes. My question to you is your archival system. Merlin also used David Allen’s Getting Things Done system with the HPDA. So you’re partially incorrect that using the HPDA WILL NOT CHANGE your Life. Thanks for Memory Lane.
im so glad youtube recommended your channel to me, your videos are so well made, super creative, keep it up!
I'm glad too :) New video on Friday, hope to see you there
i have always really loved the concept of a hipster pda, super super cool video man !
They're really neat, lovely objects. Thanks for watching
This video is really well made. I’m surprised that it has less than 500 views right now
Well thank you for helping to push it past 500 hahah
yooo just found your channel bro! glad i did!
super dope video!
I'm glad you found me :) Thank you, new film just dropped so you're in luck haha
damn the editing style , content is just amazing . You are gonna blow on youtube one day
Like this, Awesome video 😂😂😂
I'm so glad other people remember this wild time, with hipster PDAs, Getting Things Done, and then the weird niche of people hacking moleskines to be more efficient and productive.
You should look into commonplace books. It's very similar to what you're doing and I do encourage it
Nice notebook
Thank you :)
Good video. Completely hate you, but good video about a 10-minute piece of internet culture from twenty years ago. One I was an _adult_ for and remember discussions about whether the Hipster PDA or real PDA's were more pretentious. I think it was decided that real PDA and Hipster PDA pretension were inverse of one another, and both depended on how close you were to the center of tech culture. A Hipster PDA being carried by a poet in Kansas was thrifty and smart, but in Silicon Valley it was a cry for attention.
This was also around the time people were discussing PDA-related "brain damage". The most popular PDA's were by Palm, which used a little handwriting recognition system instead of a keyboard. You didn't move your hand from left to right while writing on a Palm PDA, you wrote each letter on top of the previous one. People got so used to writing without scanning their arm that you would occasionally see things where someone was writing notes while not looking at them and would look down and there would just be a blob of ink where their hand was sitting. Like all times, the turn of the century was a weird time.
So, fuck you for being twenty one, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for a decent reminder of tech culture past.
Thanks... I think?
@@thisischristor Just give it time. You will hopefully not remember this in 2055, but you will totally understand what I meant.
This feels like hipster content. Like, proper hipster. That notebook is pretty rad too. I might have to make one haha
Would totally recommend 👌🏻
You slayed in this Christor 🫶 I don’t remember pdas either but they just look like a Nintendo DS for tech bros
