  • This is part 2 of our Pops and my recent trip to the beautiful Isle of Mull.
In this episode Pops and I are on the hunt for Otters, which is a good job considering it was torrential rain.
We scour the island, with over 300 miles of coastline and an estimated 1 otter per mile you would think that this would be an easy task!
Come along as we try and photograph one of the UK's most beautiful mammals and a personal favourite of mine and see what we see.

Fantastic Video! - am going to Mull for the 1st time in May & am now even more exited after watching your videos - do you have any tips for good areas for spotting wildlife (we're staying in Salen Bay) & would 200 2.8 or 100-400 be better for the sea eagle boat trip?

Thanks for your comment Scott. Location wise I would spend lots of time around Loch Na Keal, you want to be there around an hour either side of low tide for best chance of seeing otters and the woods on the slope of the north shore just beyond the small campsite is a favourite location for white tails. For the boat trip I’d definitely go 100-400, it will give you the best variety of shots. All the best for your trip 👍🏻

Just found your RUclips channel, follow your IG not sure why I didn't think to check RUclips before now🤦‍♀️ Anyway brilliant footage. Heading to Mull in May and my anticipation is through the roof. Otters are top of my list, any tips on you're location would be great. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Thanks Sandra I really appreciate that.
Best locations are the north shore of Loch Na Keal where the car park is after the campsite. Always aim to be there around an hour either side of low tide 👍🏻

I know it's done in jest, but at about 5:30 into this clip, you pretend to spot an otter, and just charge off after it, without any sort of observation first, and you abandon your car in a passing place. As your channel is growing, justifiably with the good content, it might be worth editing this section if possible, so as not to set such a bad example, especially when the Mull and Iona Rangers are trying to eradicate poor behaviour when it comes to watching wildlife on Mull.

Am not a photographer but have been very lucky to have close encounters with otters...one ran between people and cars down a grassy beach without any panic and slipped quietly into sea. Have had two other encounters with otters on sandy beaches.....Achnahaird and Sand, near Applecross. Are they becoming used to people and losing their natural caution ?

Thanks for your comment Michael. The UK otter population is definitely increasing with sightings becoming more frequent. Most of the UK otters on our river systems are predominantly nocturnal so to have the sightings you have had, would be in my opinion, lucky 🍀

Thanks Caroline. Personally I’ve never failed along the shore of Loch Na Keal, it’s a great place for Otters and White Tailed Sea Eagles 🦅

    Another great video Dan.
Just an observation, I don't know if its the way RUclips presents the images but although the video looks great some of your stills images particularly those of the stags look a bit 'over sharpened' if you know what I mean.
I can sympathise with your dad's movement issues as my knees are shot and even watching you run down to the shore made me wince.
Otters have to be right up there on my list of favourite mammals as are nearly all the mustelid family. Down here they are far more reclusive and even seeing one on the rivers they prefer to frequent is a rare event . Photographing them is even more difficult but when you do manage an image it makes it even more satisfying.
Al the best to you both.

Thanks for your feedback Robert, I always take onboard any critique that people give it’s the only way to improve.
I too am a huge mustelid fan and am off to try and photograph the pine Martin in June (video to follow) so hopefully have a few more to share with you.
      Thanks again 👍🏻

Fantastic stuff again Dan & Stuart, great to see & hear your ethos on non disturbance of the otters too & always my own priority with all wildlife. Our trip is rapidly approaching, & tell Stu my Dad is 74 & I WILL have him running over them kelp covered rocks too! 🤣
Great stuff guys, look forward to your next adventure.
    Best,
    Nick
